it is exactly 6 o'clock and it is a purple friday here because the ravens play in chicago on sunday. it's also a real nice start to this day. i'm looking forward to another afternoon like yesterday. sharon has your traffic right after marty's first warning weather. 29 degrees on tv hill right now is to be quite honest 2 warmer than this time yesterday. it's going to be a sunny start, a cloudy and partly sunny in between. 58 degrees at lunch on its way to a high of 62 maybe. don, take it away. here is traffic with wjz traffic control at wjz traffic control. >> good morning. we have picked up a new problemn the inner loop of the beltway on the west side at baltimore national pike. we have some debris reported there. speed wise we're still doing well. 55 on the top and west sides of the

beltway. same goes for 95. that's a look at 70 just west of the beltway running smoothly. be aware of deer out there. now wjz has the stories people are talking about this morning. here's don. >> thank you. the president is trying to d on a promise he made while selling his health care plan but insurance executives across this country say it may not work. here is susan mcginnis with the story for wjz. >> we fumbled the roll out on this health care law. that's on me. >> president obama is trying to fix problems with the affordable care act. he now says americans can keep their current insurance plans through 2014 even if they don't meet the standards laid out in the new healthcare law. >> this fix won't solve every problem for every person. it's going to help a lot of people. >> nearly 5 million people received cancelations notices, something the president promised wouldn't happen. democrats in congress pressured president obama to fix his broken promise before a vote today on a

republican bill in the house. the proposal lets americans keep their coverage. >> i would encourage every member to help keep that promise and vote for this bill. >> the head of insurance said the president's fix threatens to undermine the new market and may lead to higher premiums and disruption in 2014 and beyond. in order to resend cancelations notices insurance companies have 30 days to contact the people whose policies was canceled, get state regulators to sign off on any premiums and process the new policies. >> there's no guarantee companies will reinstate those

canceled policies. the president threatened to veto the bill. the man this this surveillance video shot and killed 42-year-old david porter on saturday in the barbershop on frank ford avenue. anyone with any information is asked to call baltimore city police. a possible break in the cell phone and other robberies around towson as police made three arrests. wjz and mike schuh is live with the story. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. police here are saying that thee those robbers that they have arrested to over a dozen other robberies. >> wjz obtained this surveillance video shows the 7-eleven in towson. you see the clerk straighten up, she goes outside. about a minute later these men use a knife to order her back behind the counter.

police say these men are responsible for robberies that could include attacks on towson and goucher students. karina is a friend of the victim. >> was she terrified? >> she have scared. she called me later on, at like1 1:00 telling me the fact that she was scared. one of them was standing behind her with the knife held out on her. i'm sure she's very happy that they didn't didn't hurt her. >> police captured the masked men just a few blocks away. >> we will not tolerate this and we will use every resource to do that. >> it put this community on end. >> you have to keep your guard up. it's not good. >> police have charged the men and this video will be key in their prosecution. >> reporter: the ages of the men are between 25 and 37 and police say they're responsible for the robberies of two dollar

tree stores and a dunkin donuts. mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. back to you. >> thank you. police say the official investi. we will continue to follow it for you. stay with wjz and cbsbaltimore.com for the latest details. in the washington suburbs a man is under arrest for stabbing two people outside a shopping center in bethesda. david goldberg shot -- stabbed a driver in a road rage attack. both people stabbed were taken to the hospital and expected to survive. goldberg's 2-year-old daughter was in car during the incident. a state highway administration worker is dead after an accident on the beltway near bel air road. eddie gilyard was hit when a car veered on to the shoulder yesterday. his vehicle was also hit and a worker inside it is hurt. the entire incident remains under investigation.

the death toll from typhoon haiyan has jumped to nearly 4,000. this morning hundreds of thousands of others are still struggling to survive there. almost 600,000 people are said to be without homes and philippinos living here in the u.s. are desperate to help their homeland. here is kai jackson with more. >> hardship continues in the philippines as people fight to survive without basic necessities. last week haiyan engulfed the island with sustained winds of 195 miles per hour. an estimated 4,500 people were killed in the super storm that flattened everything. >> it is a rally of the leaders to help the typhoon victims in the philippines. >> at the baltimore county library in towson members of the philippino community meet with members of area rotary clubs and

a humanitarian group called disaster aid usa. they are trying to find ways to get food, water and supplies to those in need. >> we hope to raise fund for the rotety to provide lighting, shelter and food. >> they hope their partnership has a big impact on helping people in the philippines. >> i have two aunts who were there. >> sony grew up in the philippines and still has family there. two of her elderly aunts were missing. >> they were found two days ago in the second floor of their house. >> are they okay? >> they are okay now. they have been relocated. >> e groups say they plan to meet again. they want to send money to the philippines but plan on sending supplies as well. i'm kai jackson reporting. back to you. >> thank you. if you'd like to help the red cross is one of the

italy. let's talk about this. you have done a beautiful work h y. it's now on display at stevenson university, the greenspring campus. tell me how all this evolve and what it entails. >> about 16 years ago i started photographing in little italy. i went to the church. the pastor had me stand at the pulpit and introduce myself to everyone at every mass. i decided i wanted to spend a year photographing little italy. that was 16 years ago. >> reporter: the pictures are just absolute amazing. you have everything here. you name it, you've got it. some of the great characters, the dancing in the streets. >> right. this place, there's so much lifd color here. over time i got to see all sorts of aspects of the community. i stayed around here. >> reporter: you of course chronicled through your camera -- what kind of camera do you use? >> i actually started in the

film days and now i'm in digital. it's been 16 years. technology changes. >> reporte. you have the weddings and barbershop and just everything. you took some great photographs of a gentleman that we knew very well, mr. john penti. >> yes. the first time i introduced mysd time he said let me show you something and pulled out his yearbook. in this photograph next to him was my father. john and i made a connection. all these years i would come to his house, eat, have dinner with him, photograph him in various places. >> the man who made the little italy film festival possible, a real icon here in little italy. this is a fabulous picture. it's guedo. >> it's outside saint leo's church. >> reporter: it says little italy. >> he was quite a character. >> reporter: he was. let's

this morning we're talking tablets and toddlers. children under the age of 2 shoa void all screen time. here is jessica kartalija to report, doctors and therapists fear it may harm our children. >> good morning. as these touch screens become ma part of family life, children are using these tablets three times more than they did just 2 years ago. >> play time for babies far different in the 21st century. >> good job. >> yeah. >> parents could be making a big mistake putting touch screens in the hand of toddlers and young children. >> do you want to play a game? >> yes. >> parents think they're stimus . doctors

and therapists are raising a red flag. too much screen time with hurt their developing bodies. >> they're actually always on the ipad and not doing the pencil activities it's going to make those muscles weaker. >> like most 6-year-old nolan likes playing on his family's ipad. >> do you want me to move onto level two? >> please. >> his mom limits he has screen time but worries how much is too much knowing it can lead to muscle weakness. >> is it okay for them to be constantly looking at something? i did not know this would be a part of our parenting. >> what does this work on? >> finger and hand movement. >> it's part of nolan's oak occupational therapy. >> he likes to use all fingers together. >> he's working on hand-eye

coordination and finger movements like grasping and pinching. all problems kids can develop with spending too much time on touch screens. >> it's about their body as well? >> a lot of children are coming in with motor delays, some decreased muscle strength in areas. >> therapists are seeing more kids like nolan. the number of kids using touch screens have doubled. almost 40% of babies under two and 3/4 of kids under 8 are using them. >> something happens so they tap and something happens there. it's very enticing. >> what does this mean for generations to come? the technology is so new that researchers can't predict what damage might be done. that has

here's don. >> thank you. under mounting pressure theg ing changes to the roll out of the affordable care act. the move would allow extensions for people dropped be by their insurance plans. as mary bubala explains, it may not be that simple. >> first he said he was sorry, now president obama said the white house has a fix for nearly 500-0000 americans set to lose -- 5 million americans set to lose their health care. >> i said i would fix this problem. >> the white house is giving insurance companies the option to keep offering plans that could have been canceled through 2014. providers will have to make clear what plans do not include and let consumers know what other new options are available in the federal exchanges. >> now, this fix won't solve every problem for every person. it's going to help a lot of people. >> president obama took questions for nearly an hour. >> we fumbled the roll out.

>> republicans are pushing lega llow customer to keep their current plans permanently. >> the only way to fully protect the american people is to scrap this law once and for all. >> the white house revealed that fewer than 27,000 people were able to enroll on the federal website. >> state insurance commissioner commissioners would make the decision on whether people keep their policies. lock heed martin will let marylanders keep their jobs. it's cutting an a additional 2,000 jobs. the company said it needs to lower costs because the federal government isn't spending as much on defense contracts these days. the man accused of child sex abuse inside the fort meade military base will appear in court today. as meghan mccorkell explains,

investigators fear there may be many more abused. >> good morning. officials at fort meade held a g ing for parents last night after a former youth counselor was arrested in an fbi investigation. >> 27-year-old anthony dennis williams, a counselor at the fort meade youth center for 8 years. investigators say the man who taught a class called passport to manhood preyed on young boys. two victims came forward saying williams sexually abused them in the attic. he also exchanged graphic picture with the boys. >> it was the mother of one of the children discovered suspicious text messages. >> in one exchange found on williams phone he asked the child about the abused abuse saying what can i ask you, what got you to the point you want today go along with it. the victim responds stupidly i guess. now prosecutors are

trying to figure out if there's more victims. >> we want to reach out to the parents of the children in contact with that suspect and make sure that they ask the tough questions and find out if there may be anything that happened to them. >> officials have set up a 24-hour call center for parent that is have concerns. a statement army leaders say our priorities is to ensure the families involved in the alleged incidents are involving the support they need and we continue to fully assist the fbi with their ongoing investigation. >> williams stopped working at the youth center in 2012, meghan mccorkell, wjz eyewitness news. >> williams is charged with sexually abusing a minor on federal property and faces a maximum of 15 years behind bars. a former baltimore contract employee indicted for stealing employee's personal information is back in maryland. courtney calvert was arrested in florida on an unrelated case. the stolen hard driver was recovered

and they don't think he used the information on it. towson residents have been on edge with robberies of cell phones and other materials involving some college students as well. this morning police have three men in custody in connection with that. mike schuh is live outside baltimore county police head quarters. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. these alleged towson robbers san nected to over a dozen other robberies. >> wjz obtained this surveillance video shows the 7-e eleven -- 7-e eleven. these men are responsible for at least a dozen violent robberies that could include on a towson and goucher college student. karina is a friend and coworker of the victim. >> what did she say?

updates. the police department will replace its current crown victorias with the new models. they're said to be faster and more resiptive. they also have a hidden tray in the trunk for electronic police gear. they will be phased in over the next few years. there are a lot of unanswered questions this morning about a man who full from a plane and into the ocean off miami. here is marly hall with the story for wjz. >> investigators in florida are still trying to figure out how a passenger allegedly fell out of this plane and into the atlantic ocean. yesterday around 1:30 the pilot made that unaushlusual call. >> may day. i have a door ajar. i'm head ing to tamiami. >> you have a door open? >> i have a door ajar and a passenger that fell down. >> shortly after the plane took off from a private airport just

outside of miami the pilot of the piper pa-46 aircraft radioed air traffic controllers to tell them what happened. >> you said you had a passenger that fell out of your plane? >> that's correct, sir. he opened the back door and he l down plane. >> the coast guard used helicopters and boats to search for the missing passenger. authorities say they don't plan to find the man alive. >> it's reasonable that anybody that falls from an aircraft without a parachute turns into a recovery effort and not a search and rescue. >> only the pilot and one passenger were on board the plane. investigators are interviewing the pilot to try to piece together exactly what happened. marly hall, wjz eyewitness news. >> the coast guard and local fire rescue says part of their investigation is trying to confirm whether the call was real. baltimore based understood armor is leaping forward into the fitness technology market. according to the baltimore sun, under armor plans to acquire map

>> joel, welcome to baltimore and the eyewitness news morning edition. >> thank you. facts should be apparent my plee -- it's my pleasure to be with you. >> let's get out of the way what you're in town to do. you and victoria are here to offer a night of hope. what do you think that is and why do we need hope? >> it's a 2 and a half hour event we've done all over the world. i think everybody needs hope. it feels like a lot of things are trying to push people down these days. so we come to people know that god has good things in store, they can let go of the past, move forward. let me try to inspire people. hopefully draw them closer to god and lift their spirits. >> one of the reasons you're in town is you have a new book out. when you just glance at it, the title is break out. that doesn't sound like a book joel

osteen would do. tell me about the book, how do we break out? >> it's talking about how it's easy to get stuck in life. you get up, go to work, feel like you've reached limits. i feel like the first place we get stuck in our own thinking. i talk about believing bigger and taking the limits off of yourself and from god. just practical things. keeping the right perspective. don't settle for good enough. also i talk about praying big prayers. a lot of times we pray over our food, for protection. i think you have to pray for your dreams and hopes. >> is it more self-help than religion? >> it's based on the scripture i feel like i'm helping people live out the christian life. i'm not teaching doctrine in it. this is about how to forgive,

how to have a good attitude, believe big. i feel like the scripture does help you to become better. >> okay. if i can ask you a personal quen , it's more personal towards me perhaps than you. i grew up in the church, i i communicate with large groups of people now all the time. i think i minister to them. all right. in my youth i spoke a lot at church. it was one of the few places i could find where older people would listen to a young man and not dismiss what they had to say. i know that you were involved in your father's church but in a different aspect than preaching. when he died you took over and preached for the first time and now you've taken to a grand scale if i may say so. do you ever get over the excitement, the thrill of being god's conduit or messager to a large crowd of people?
