guerilla family gang, maurice hill, arrested during a police raid. >> wjz took a ride with police as they raided 11 homes in the eastern district. our cameras are there as they go into action. >> hands up, hands up. get down. >> sech people were seven people were taken into custody. police found heroin and cocaine. according to a gang expert, one of the many moneymakers. >> they use that money to help with their day-to-day activities. in other instances they pay a tax to the command structure of the black guerilla family gang. >> raids like this are happening all across the city as mayor stephanie rwalings-blake trying to rid her city of violent criminals. >> we've had these things in the works. this is simmer. we haven't even gotten the heatd ed yet. >> the state's attorney office has handed down 68 indictments in the last week with no plans to pull back on police raids. more are coming.

the united nations has distributed aid to 50,000 people. nearly 600,000 people have been displayed by the storm. more than 2,300 people are believed dead. people in maryland are doing their part to assist but time is major factor. mike schuh is live with more on this. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning. the survivors in the philippines are going to need long-term help. that's where a church in white marsh comes in. >> in white marsh they're calling it an assembly line of hope. members of the river of life international christian fellowship are collecting supplies to send to the survivors of the typhoon in the philippines. >> we are collecting clothes, dried goods. >> with each passing day the situation in the philippines moves from dire to desperate. joyce spoke to wjz about how hard it is seeing destruction in the country where she grew up. >> is it difficult to watch

those images on television? >> you would cry. your heart would be breaking. s really devastating. >> water, food, shelter, medicine, all in short supply. now the city of baltimore is sending members of its emergency management team to help some of the 600,000 people left with no place to live. cpc with the mayor's office of emergency planning speak with wjz by phone. >> i'm going to be there in a planning function. so that's going to be figuring out what resources we have, what we expect to see in terms of the patients, types of injuries and things like that. >> this church will continue to collect supplies until november the 22nd then they will be packed up and shipped to the philippines. >> reporter: phone and internet service is down for much of the island so many of the folks here in maryland with relatives are still waiting for word. i'm mike schuh reporting live. back to you. >> thank you. if you would like to help the rd cross is one of the agencies taking

donations here. a former maryland school for the deaf employee is found guilty of sexually abusing young students. clarance taylor was found guilty. his defense attorney said he plans to appeal saying the judge misinformed the jury. >> they asked a question regarding whether or not they were allowed to consider certain aspects that were dismissed. the judge gave them a instruction that they were allowed to consider it. that wasn't proper law. >> seven young women accused taylor of abuse. he faces the possibility of up to 50 years in prison. in pittsburgh a 16-year-old is behind bars after shooting three students outside the school. it was in retaliation for a drug-related robbery inside the school last month. the wounded students are

expected to recover. the school said it will remain open the rest of this week but with some restrictions in place. in florida two high schoolers are under arrest for burning down the house of a student. a 16 and 17-year-old stole item from the home before turning on all the burners in the kitchen and setting a mattress on fire. >> not only did they steal their belongs but then they had the audacity to burn down the house, that's real mean. >> the two attend school with two of the girls who live in the home. an arsonist burned a dozen cars in a park in upper marlboro. someone dumped a stolen car from washington dc in the park and set it on fire. the flames then spread to the

other vehicles. no one is hurt. in this city ambitious new r baltimore's crown jewel. we're talking about the inner harbor. we are talking about a pedestrian bridge to connect both sides of the water front, a big pool and maybe even a beach. such a project comes at a price. here is mike hellgren with more. >> you're looking at what the mayor calls a softer, greener inner harbor with ambitious plans, including a pedestrian bridge from harbor east to federal hill, all to improve the crown jewel which some say has become tarnished. >> i think they need to bring the people back. whatever they can do to do that, i'm all for it. >> while leaders aren't talking about the cost they point to how vital the harbor is to the economy. last year 14 million visitors raged in $102 million in state and city taxes. >> come down to the harbor place, the greatest place in the

speaking out about the widespread corruptions and the moves he's making. in this wjz exclusive vic carter gets answers from the man at the top. >> a notorious gang, the bgf runs a sex and smuggling ring behind these prison walls. a federal indictment charges correctional officers smuggled in drugs, phones. tavon white got two guards prege behind bars. secretary of public safety and corrections gary maynard is the man in charge. >> the relationship between inmates and corrections officers clearly was a major problem. >> there's no question about it. if you have 13 corrupt officers it's a problem. it's against the law, our policies, something we don't allow

>> federal wiretaps record tavon white proclaiming his power behind bars. this is my jail. my word is law. >> untrue. thehe said he was -- if he said he was running the jail that was not true. he was running a racket in the jail with some corruption correctional officers. they had a segment of a business going. >> the indication is it was widespread, it was a fairly large enterprise. >> there was no way that tavon white or anybody else was this control of that jail. >> how embarrassing was it for you or how personally did you take it that this type of action was happening under your watch? >> it was embarrassing for me. it was none the less something i felt like i needed to take responsibility for immediately. anything you take responsible for you have power over. >> how much better is the facility now compared to 6

surprising place. i was not expecting to get letters from those books from that population. the more research i started doing and the more letter interaction i had with these folks the more i realized but for the grace of god there go i. that's why the cover looks like it does. you don't know if i'm in prison or looking into somebody in prison. you turn a few different things if in our lives and we could be there. it could be our niece, nephew, cousin, brother. i wanted to inspire folks about saying no matter what kind of prison you're in, will it's made of iron bars or not you can live a great life and build a great life. >> are all these letters actual letters answering somebody else's letter or did you use that as a position to tackle other tough topics. >> it's basically letters exchanged. you see more of my

letters to the incarcerated brothers. you do get to sense of a evolution of a relationship, just like a fiction book. you get hopefully wrapped up into the story of his life and my life. you see what he's teaching me and hopefully i'm teaching him some things. then i have contributors that contributed to the book like russell simmons and dr. ben chavis, dr. chansey. he talks about the incarcerated mind and how to break free from that. it's not written only for folks many prison. many of us are in a prison that's not made of iron bars. >> and that prison not made of iron bars in many cases is tougher to get out. sometimes you don't give yourself a chance at patrol. sometimes you don't look at new evidence that could change your own way of thinking about you. i understand what you're saying. this is pretty
