hello, everybody. i'm denise koch. >> and i'm vic carter. here's what people are talking about tonight. >> arctic cold and maybe even snow. it may be only the second week of september, but -- november, but it is going to feel like this. bite time the sun returns, we could feel a little return of the snow. here's a look at mostly cloudy skies. and temperatures will soon start dropping. wjz is live with first warning weather coverage. meteorologist chelsea ingram and bob turk are tracking what to expect and when. >> let's take a look at temperatures. mild night now. just about everybody, pretty normal this time of year. 54 here. 54 at d.c. 50, ocean city. cool spot, oakland at 43. but 59 still in cumberland. very warm temperatures out there. however, to the north and west of us, cold air is building. chicago now down to 30. 27, minneapolis. 16 now in the afternoon in winnipeg. and 23 in bismarck. there's that cold air to the north of us. east of that area, temperatures

generally in the 50s, 60s, even 70s. there's mild air ahead of that front. and the cold air behind it. with that cold air coming in, garrett county, and western allegheny county, under a winter weather advisory, beginning late tonight, through tomorrow, as snow will be falling out in the mountain areas, pretty much guaranteed. how about for the rest of us, chelsea has a look at what we can expect and when we can expect it. chelsea? >> let's take a look at a time line. as we head into your tuesday morning. we'll see rainfall pushing into the region. as early as around 4:00 and 8:00. and between about 6:00 and 9:00, we'll start to see some of the that rainfall mix and change over into snow showers. then it will taper into flurries and sprinkles across the region by 1:00 p.m. and we'll dry out after 1:00 p.m. how much you can expect, that winter weather advisory is in effect. we're looking at anywhere from 3 to 6 inches.

trace to coating possible. keep in mind that the ground is very warm. we're not looking at request accumulation with this system. except maybe on the grassy surfaces. and rain mixing with snow in in maryland. and over on the eastern shore. we'll have more coming up in your exclusive first warning forecast. for now, let's go back inside. >> thank you, chelsea and bob. check in with wjz for first warning weather coverage. we'll keep you updated on any threat of severe weather, along with any information on closings or delays. fear and heightened awareness in college park. the search is on tonight for a group of men after two university of maryland students are attacked and robbed. wjz is live. derek valcourt has the latest on the attack. and the concerns on campus. derek? >> there was a group of about 8 to 10 attackirs. and while the victims were not badly harmed, the real damage came to many students' sense of safety. >> reporter: during the day, paint branch trail is a picture of autumn beauty.

and it is busy. hundreds of students use it every day to go between this massich student housing complex, and the university of maryland campus. >> everybody who lives in this building, they have to go through this trail because it's the closest to get to class. >> reporter: but at night, this tree-lined path is much darker. and it was dark sunday, when two male students were beaten and robbed by a group of 8 to 10 men. >> and right in front of where so may be students liver. we should be safe here. and that people are going to get attacked, it's just scary. >> reporter: the attack happened around 3:00 in the morning. >> that's usually the danger hour. >> reporter: security on the trail has always been a concern. there are lots of lights lights and these emergency call boxes scattered every few hundred feet. many on campus favorite learned of the attack through an electronic e-mail alert. >> kind of looked like they were looking for somebody to attack in a group that day. >> the alarm even has male students looking over their shoulders. >> it's really scary. >> there's nothing you can do

about that. it's like excessive. >> reporter: one of the students who was beaten was briefly hospitalized. both of the victims are expected to make a full recovery. the case still under investigation. derek valcourt, wjz eyewitness news. >> derek, thank you. the attackers did not use any weapons. anyone with information on the incident is urged to call police. there is new information about a deadly fire in college park this weekend. mary is in the newsroom with more on that. mary? >> denise, the elderly man who died in the the early morning fires is 83-year-old reginald aura. for more than 90 minutes, firefighters fought the flames in pal co court in college park. covered with soot and shovels in hand. crews worked from daybreak this afternoon, to find orem's body. his wife managed to escape safely. she is being treated for smoke inhalation. fire investigators don't know yet if excess debris caused the fire. but they say it did feed the flames. back to you, denise. prince george's county

police say the home had an extreme amount of material inside, making it hard for firefighters to move around. right now, wjz is following some breaking news. there is a fire in west baltimore. captain jeff long is live in sky eye chopper 13. he's over the scene with details for us. jeff? >> baltimore city fire department did get this fire under control. they do remain on the scene. but as you can see here, they're starting to pull hoses. they should be wrapping up pretty quickly. this is on west fayette street, between north fayelt and poppel ton street. so west fayette street is obviously shut down. nobody getting through here. but as far as we can tell, this fire is out. everybody is okay. this was an occupied dwelling on fayette street. reporting live from sky eye chopper 13, i'm captain jeff long. back to you. >> thank you very much, captain jeff. complete desperation. days after typhoon haiyan hits the philippines, bodies are lined up on the road and people

are struggling to survivor. this storm is being called one of the strongest in history. we begin with more on the huge relief effort. >> reporter: typhoon hai yan destroying everything in its path. leaving families to find shelter everywhere they can. survivors are growing desperate, even painting signs for rescue helicopters. >> reporter: we want water and medicines for the injured. we don't need meetings, we just need your help. >> reporter: u.s. marines are arriving with badly needed supplies for the millions of disaster victims. >> it was a 15- to 25-foot wave, came across entire villages. and so everything was wiped out. >> reporter: witnesses say the damage from friday's deadly typhoon looks more like the aftermath of a tsunami. >> i don't have the words for it. it's really horrific. >> bodies line the streets. some store owners are using guns to fight off looters. these american storm chasers

became rescuers, when the typhoon tore through a hotel. >> reporter: they used mattresses to help guests escape. >> i can see electricity in the water, guys. >> reporter: 10s of thousands are feared dead. but the death toll is difficult to track because phone lines are down. a sign of life came today in one of the hardest-hit villages, when a woman gave birth to a baby girl. alphonso van marsh, wjz eyewitness news. >> complete coverage continues now, meteorologist chelsea ingram has more on the incredible magnitude of this. chelsea? >> thanks, vic. let's go ahead and take a look at a loop of satellite images, as typhoon hai yan roared across the sea. it went with a strength of what here in the atlantic basin would be a category 5 hurricane. now, let's take a look at some mind-boggling numbers, associated with this system. we saw speeds up to 195 miles per hour. maximum wind gusts estimated to

be around 235 miles per hour. nearly 16 inches of rainfall fell in spots. and vic, this typhoon may be one of the strongest tropical cyclones to have ever made landfall. back to you. >> apparently from all the damage we is seen. you can help the victims of the philippines. you can call 1-877-help-crs or log onto their website, www.c s.org. dozens of people are forced from their homes when a car makes a wrong turn in montgomery county. the vehicle slammed into a hill. the crash caused a gas leak. so everyone tuesday inside was evacuated. no one was injured. repairs are now being made to the broken gas line. it's unclear how many damage is being done. for the teams and fans, it doesn't matter if it wasn't pretty. it's a win. wjz is live with the ravens training facility in owings

mills. sports director mark viviano with more on what's ahead. and what the fans are saying over the bengals. mark? >> more than halfway into this season, the ravens remain a work in progress. the offense, frustrating. failing to show any progress yesterday, despite that. the ravens did manage to beat the cincinnati bengals. >> joe flacco continues to get battered, sacked five times by the bengals. and the ravens' running game continues to struggle. still the worst in the nfl. but the ravens' defense came through to save the day, bottling up the bengals with five quarterback sacks and three interceptions. still, cincinnati was able to tie the game, when the final play. regulation, with a desperation pass that was tipped into the hands of a bengals receiver in the end zone. but the ravens survive that disaster with a game-winning field goal in overtime, ending a three-game losing streak, keeping ravens' play-off hopes alive. >> i don't think we were ever out of it. and this game definitely helps.

tonight, the investigation into a cover-up of a massive drug investigation. >> two men from baltimore. pleading guilty to their involvement in silk road, a sophisticated criminal marnght place online. >> reporter: a site administrator, and drug dealer, both plead guilty to conspiracy for their tie tol a druck market. 32-year-old jacob george iv of maryland admitted to federal investigators he had been buying heroin from dealers on the streets of baltimore, then reselling it on the silk road website. >> crimes that used to occur on the streets are now occurring over the internet. our law enforcement officers have followed the bad guys onto the internet. they think they're anonymous. but the reality is, they can be traced. >> reporter: the feds traced curtis green, an administrator to the site of his home in utah. >> law enforcement made controlled delivery of the drugs am so he had arranged for

all of this anonymously over the internet, but he had to provide an address for them to be delivered. that led them right to his door. >> reporter: according to the agreement, green worked for the creator of silk road. the fbi arrested him and shut down the site last month. but a new website with the same name and look is now up, offering an itemized of illegal drugs. on twitter last week, the silk road's purported new operator announced, silk road is back up. deja vu, anyone? we rise again. >> reporter: curtiss green faces a maximum of 40 years in prison. ask jacob george, the one from the maryland faces up to 20 years. >> what an incredible enterprise. the two men will be sentenced in february. american bishops hold their first national meeting since pope francis was reacted. and it's -- elected. and it's being held here in baltimore.

at the basilica of the assumption downtown, they reflect and pray. and discuss leadership in the catholic church. the bishops will meet until wednesday. baltimore is home to the oldest catholic archdiocese in america. well, drivers are getting a pleasant surprise at the pump, as goes prices fall to a two- year low. wjz is live. monique griego has more on the reason for the drop and if the trend will continue. >> prices at this corner, actually lower than the state average. we got everything from $3.11 to $3.15 a gallon. according to triple a, they could go even lower. >> reporter: surprising numbers on gas station price boards are pushing drivers to pull over. >> that's why i stopped here really. because i thought it was so low. >> reporter: after years of constant uptick. gas prices in maryland and across the country hit a two- year low.

>> we're seeing a steady decline in the prices of gas. >> reporter: regina says right now in maryland, the average cost for a gallon is $3.23. that's slightly higher than the national average of $3.21. puoverall, prices are 23 cents lower than this time last year. >> i must admit, they affect me. i go in search of the lowest price i can find in the city of baltimore. >> reporter: and while gas prices usually drop in winter, this year's loss is even more significant. >> a number. things are to account. we're seeing a drop in demand. >> all things remaining the same, we certainly expect prices to continue to trend downward through the thanksgiving holiday and possibly hopefully through the end of the year. >> reporter: that's a prediction drivers are hoping to ride out. >> i'm on a fixed income. and i really can't afford to pay high prices for gas. >> reporter: and triple a says

by the end of the year, the average price could get around that $3 mark. but they stopped short of saying we would fall below $3. i guess we can hope. >> it would be a nice site if it happened. >> the last time we dropped below $3 a gallon was three years ago. >> wow. how much was gas when you started driving? >> i remember when it was $1.50 and we were complaining. >> how much was it when you started driving? >> 29 cents. >> how about the year you started driving. in oakland. tomorrow night, in garrett county, there will be snow on the ground. temperatures will be dropping into the upper teens out there. 50 up in westminster. 52 down by the bay. and over in rock hall. 55, 37 today. now, the average temperature, normal temperature today is 58 and 38. but the records, 77. in 2006. and the cold, 21 in 1973. right now, southerly winds, for the time being. keep us in the air. even to the west. but later tonight special tomorrow, a cold front will approach the region. winds will shift. they will pick up. and with that frontal passage, we will see some precip. here's the front. along that frontal boundary. got some light rain showers. most of the snow is going to fall in garrett county, as you mentioned. but it may get cold enough, quick enough that rain showers here will change to some snow shower activities. and there's a chance we might see a trace on the ground. the ground will still be

awfully warm. we don't expect anything on the roads now. garrett county. yes, guaranteed, they're going to see accumulation out there. temperatures 40s and 50s ahead of it. chicago, it just dropped down to 29. the snow just ending there. there is a band of snow there. as that front passes tomorrow morning, we will see some rain. and a transition to snowflakes for a while. before it quickly clears out. front will quickly move there through. it's going to be a cold night tomorrow night. and a cold day on wednesday. north winds, 25 knots. bay temp around 55. that should be dropping, though, i'm pretty sure. tonight, though, later on showers overnight, down to 39. showers change to snow shower activity before it clears out. 43. so still above freezing. it's going really tough. cold air aloft. a lot of snow blowing around. mixed with rain showers. might see a little rain shield. just a first taste of winter

it is 6:30. partly cloudy. 53 degrees in central maryland. keeping. thank you for staying with wjz. here are some of the stories people are talking about tonight. miami dolphins lineman richie incognito says that the drama surrounding him and his teammate, jonathan martin, is not about bullying. now, he's speaking out about his suspension. jessica kartalija joins us with this story. >> reporter: in an interview with fox sports, incognito said he took things too far. but he never meant to hurt his

teammate. >> i never meant it that way. >> reporter: richie incognito says he is embarrassed by the language he used with teammate jonathan martin. >> no matter how bad and how vulgar it sounds, that's how we communicate. that's how our friendship was. and those are the facts. and that's what i'm accountable for. >> reporter: incognito said his actions came from a place of love. >> reporter: as the leader. as his best friend on the team, that's what has me miffed. how i missed this. and i never saw it -- never saw it coming. >> reporter: martin left the team two weeks ago, after accusing incognito and others of harassment. incognito gave fox sports more than 1100 text messages he exchanged with martin over the past year. one of them, sent by martin, just three days after he left the team, saying "just know, i don't blame you guys at all. it's just the culture around football and the locker room got to me a little ." >> i blame the culture.

i blame what was going on around me. if i was a racist and i was bullying jon that is right martin, and the press asked the locker room, they would have said, we have seen this, we've seen that. i'm proud of my guys for telling the truth. i have taken things too far and i did not know it was hurting him. i think i'd give him a big hug right now. because we've been through so much. and i'd be like, dude what is going on. >> incognito was kicked off the team at university of nebraska and cut by the st. louis rams for issues that included run- ins with teammates and coaches. denise? >> thank you, jessica. just moments ago, the miami dolphins' owner made his first comments on the issue. steven ross called this issue a nightmare and said he plans to meet with jonathan martin wednesday. ross said he wants to hear all of the facts before he decides

richie incognito's future. mary is live in the newsroom with the latest on the investigation. >> reporter: a man kicked out of an indie rock band, killed three former bandmates and wounded a fourth before killing himself. happened just after midnight. they can rent cheaper space than in trendier parts of the city. they had come to the u.s., seeking more musical freedom. at least 200 people were inside the building at the time. police are interviewing them for more information on all of this. vic? >> thank you. the one band member who survived the shooting is in stable condition. tens of thousands of people are dead or missing. three days after typhoon haiyan swept through the philippines. bodies are strewn in the roadways. and survivors are becoming desperate. our complete coverage continues. rochelle ritchie has measure on what a local organization is doing to help. >> reporter: well, many of the families in the philippines

lost everything they had. and while toiletries and canned goods are vital, catholic relief services says it's cash that is going to be the biggest help for the victims. >> reporter: the cry for help is loud and clear in the philippines, where thousands of people have died and others survived. >> i can see electricity in the water. >> reporter: catholic relief services in baltimore, one of the first teams to respond on the ground. >> so we're looking at a major disaster that the philippines by themselves will not be able to handle. and the rest of the world will really have to step up and help. >> reporter: while supplies are needed, the roads are flooded and covered with debris, meaning getting help to the victims will be difficult. >> it is costly to ship things and ship items that that actually is not a very efficient way to respond. it's much better to have the funds in country. >> reporter: typhoon haiyan has been hit with winds up to 200 miles an hour. in 2010, they assisted the

people of haiti, after a catastrophic earthquake killed hundreds of thousands of people. >> and the death toll has not been finalized. but it's expected to reach at least 10,000. i'm rochelle ritchie, wjz eyewitness news. >> and you can help the victims. the philippines typhoon. catholic relief services is taking donations. you can call 1-877-help-crs. or log onto their website, www.crs.org. iran is giving nuclear inspectors more information about its program. many have accused iran of using uranium to build nuclear weapons. talking more about ways it can ease concerns about the country's nuclear program. work can be months before it is finished. took crews more than three months. they had to patch up the stone work and fill in some cracks.

a husband and wife face federal charges today for a bonnie and clyde-like robbing spree. they are accused of 13 bank robberies and two others. they used disguises and notes

to demand money. it netted a total of $54,000. investigators are still trying to figure out which cougar attacked and killed a woman in oregon. 35-year-old renee radzewan worked at the wildcat haven sanctuary. one of the big cats attacked and killed her saturday night. but investigators are not sure which one. the sanctuary, which is a no- kill facility, houses bobcats, coug cougars and tigers. a football game bet ends with a woman shocked by a stun gun. >> are we videoing? >> yes. [ taser sound ] [ laughter ] >> reporter: a husband says he and his wife made a bet about the green bay packers. the bet was if the packers won, he said his wife agreed to let him shocker her with aun-- shock her with a stun gun. the two went outside to celt the debt after the game. he shocked his wife. while someone videotaped it.

she called police. her husband is charged with felony electronic weapons possession. surveillance video, you can see the woman in the red car, driving in and out of the emergency lane. several cars had to swerve around here. police say the woman had to take a training class to pass a written criefing -- driving test before getting behind the wheel again. she'll also have to pay a fine. the days of waiting until monday for your packages are over. at least for amazon customers. the retail giant is teaming up with postal service to deliver orders on sunday. the company hopes to expand its seven-day delivery program to other cities next year. they are working on similar deals with other retailers as well. scott pelley has a preview of what's coming up tonight on the cbs evening news. scope of the typhoon disaster is only now becoming clear.

well, it was a mild gay today. but there are some significant weather changes on the way. meteorologist chelsea ingram and bob turk are updating the five-day forecast. >> hello, everyone. as we head into tomorrow morning, temperatures will be right around 39 degrees, with a mix of rain and snow, tapering to snow showers. we'll start to dry out by the afternoon. after seeing a few flurries by about 1:00. temperatures about 43 degrees. and by dinnertime, looking at temps around 35 with partly cloudy skies. let's go inside to bob for a look at the next five days. bob? >> and just as important, we'll have wind chill, probably in the upper 20s. 42 on wednesday. down in the 20s again. warming up by thursday. back up to 50. 59 on friday. and low 60s as we start the weekend. so temperatures take a big dip. and they start coming right back again. so it's just a quick cold shot. but with that cold air coming in, probably see some snow in

 when i first got shingles it started on my back. ,,,,and i had like this four inch band of bumps that came around to the front of my body. and the pain from it was- it was excruciating. it made me curtail my activities cause i'm really an outgoing kind of a guy. and, uh, i like to play sports, i play basketball, i play pool. i did not want anyone to brush into me to cause me more pain than i was already enduring. i went to my doctor; he said well you actually have shingles. this is a result of you having chickenpox as a kid.

it totally caught me off guard. i put the pool cue in the corner. i couldn't do those things anymore. the basketball- it caught dust. i wanted to just crawl up in a ball and just, just wait til it passed.

well, all is well that ends well. but that was a nail-biter yesterday. >> yes, it was. mark is here now with the we'll the fan sports report. >> well, the ravens are happy to have gotten that win over the cincinnati bengals. but not entirely happy with how they got it. especially on offense. in particular, the ravens' running game, which continues to spin its wheels. right near the bottom of the national football league. and that is unfamiliar territory for running back ray

now, the ravens are going to face a backup quarterback in chicago. because bears starter, jay cutler got hurt again yesterday. he had to leave in the fourth quarter, with an ankle injury in the bears' loss to detroit. he had missed a previous game with a groin injury. bears will go with backup josh mccowan. another update. broncos' payton manning aggravated a right ankle injury. he will reportedly miss some practice time this week. but manning is expected to play when denver faces the undefeated kansas chiefs coming up this sunday night. manning originally injured his ankle this sunday. but hasn't miss a game because of it. it's time to hand out more awards for this past baseball season. and tonight, it's the rookies who are honored. the american league rookie year -- of the year award. called up from the minor leagues in june. went on to hit 13 home runs and
