mcdaniel college in westminster is opening late at 10:00 a.m. because of a power outage. days after a typhoon devastated the philippines the government and international relief agencies are still struggling to get aid to those who certainly need it. here is susan mcginnis reporting for wjz. >> typhoon haiyan came ashore in vietnam this morning as a category 1 storm. far weaker than the potential record-breaking typhoon that crashed into the philippines friday. >> tens of thousands are feared dead but getting an accurate count is hard is communication systems down in many areas. jim eds is a photographer from florida who was in one of the hard-hit areas. >> it was complete chaos. just a mass of people trying tot out of there for security reasons and because there's no food or water. >> president obama said his thoughts and prayers go out to the people effected by the storm. he ordered the pentagon to deploy marines to assist in

recovery efforts. >> the first waive of u.s. government aid arrived. >> food, water, it's always the basics they need. >> lewis is a red cross relief worker from boston headed to the philippines. >> it's my home country. i've seen a lot of devastationsn the philippines. it's emotional. it's part of the job. >> the devastation is so severe people are digging through the debris to find food as they wait for the much-needed help. susan mcginnis, wjz eyewitness news. >> here organizations are mobilizing relief efforts. catholic relief services and lutheran world relief are already sending over much-needed items and volunteers. >> we're told that it's as big a disaster in terms of its impact as the earthquake in hati and the indian ocean tsunami. we're looking a major disaster.

>> among the items being acceptability out, 8,000 tarps to provide temporary shelters for those who lost their homes. in this city a neighborhood shuts down for hours after a threat sends swat teams to under armor head quarters. it turned out to be a hoax. wjz and mike schuh is live with more on this. good morning, mike. >> reporter: good morning, don. good morning, everyone. policee olent threat seriously enough that the head quarters wassing evacuated and the neighborhood. >> those here in south baltimore finally returned home after the swat team gives the all clear. sunday afternoon police respond this force after 911 dispatchers received a threat to under armor employees. >> we came out, our swat teams cleared the facility, we evacuated areas. >> many people were standing outside cold and frustrated. >> an officer came around and said you have to evacuate the

area, we have a situation going on. >> there's fear and anxiety and hour of searching after police discover the threat is a prank call. >> you had me come from dundalk down to south system to make sure my mother is okay. >> dorothy is without her medication for several hours and she couldn't be more disgusted. >> i think they aught to be ashamed of themselves to pull something on the people like that, make other people suffer for nothing. >> so only a dozen people were evacuated from the building and the caller will face harsh penalties for all of this wasted manpower. >> false calls put a lot of people in danger. they take resources from the city. >> reporter: police aren't saying if they have any suspects. reporting live at the under armor head quarters in south baltimore, mike schuh, wjz eyewitness news. >> thank you. under armor will be back open tg . in college park an elderly man is dead after a house fire that happened in the 5200 block

of south place. firefighters say the home was packed with card board boxes making it difficult for them to get around inside. an 80-year-old was still able to escape but the body of an 82-year-old man believed to be her husband was found inside. the cause of the fire is still under investigation. a woman was struck and killed by a train at the silver spring metro station. a washington dc metro spokesperson said it appears to have been an accident. the circumstances are still unclear. the woman was rescued from the tracks and taken to a hospital yesterday where she later died. the silver spring metro station was temporarily closed down. the annapolis city council is trying to stipthe mayor of his power. this comes days after mike pantelides was elected mayor. a member of the council said he will introduce a charter amendment to move annapolis to a council manager style of government now. under the legislation the city manager

will report to the council and not to the mayor. someone in this area is waking up $1 million richer. someone bought a powerful ticket for that amount. the winner gets the second tier prize, guessing the first five numbers as 3, 9, 47, 59 and 52 but not guessing the powerball right, which was 32. the winner has 180 days to collect the money. some veterans from florida pay a visit to the capital. 50 of them flew in from fort meyers, florida to washington dc to visit the memorials that honor their service. they made the trip thank to a non-profit organization that raised $65,000 in just six weeks. >> 90 years old and one memorable scene before i die.

bikes. officers say they've recovered five of the seven bikes stolen. you probably noticed the holiday shopping season is underway and the turkey is not on our tables as of yet. as tim williams reports,many retailers say they have good reason to kick off sales earlier this year. >> it's becoming the new normal, the holiday shopping season starting earlier and earlier. online shopping is big this year. they are expected to be up 15% from 2012. the early start giving retailers an edge. >> it's about market share. it's about trying to capture thf americans that like to get this work done in november. >> america's largest retailer wal-mart kicked off the online holiday shopping deals followed by target and others. >> it's just a very, very competitive world out there. >> a late thanksgiving shortens

the shopping season by a week. this strategy helps even the score. >> before 8:00 and while you're still in your slippers you can see whatever deals are online. if you don't like any go to the stores when they open at 10:00 a.m. >> there's expected to be a 5% boost in people looking for online deals. it's the first time in 15 years the internet is expected to be the number one shopping destination. >> with americans using mobile devices it's become the new normal. >> it's going to be like this for quite some time. . >> holiday sales are expected to be up 4% this year up from 3.5%. the university of maryland college park is celebrating another acc championship. the terps top ranked field hockey team took on north carolina for the acc title yesterday. maryland breaks a scoreless tie in the second half. they won 2-0.
