this is the "cbs morning news" for monday, november 11th, 2013. good morning. good to be with you. i'm anne-marie green. well, this morning the situation for millions of people in the philippines is desperate. three days after typhoon haiyan made landfall, stunned survivors are pleading for food, shelter, and medicine. this morning haiyan made landfall in northern vietnam near the chinese border and has weakened to a tropical storm. in the philippines authorities say about 2 million people are affected. tens of thousands of homes have been destroyed. and two provincial officials say the death toll could reach 10,000. cbs producer barnaby lo is on the phone from the island. barnaby, good morning. how are you? >> good morning, anne-marie. i'm okay. but the city is a whole different story. the first batch of aid from the u.s. has arrived in the philippines and it is on its way

now to the central philippines, the region hardest hit by typhoon haiyan. it's carrying two trucks and a forklift. this equipment will definitely be helpful in clearing the roads, which is impaerative so relief can hit the hardest hit areas. right now hundreds of thousands of survives especially in the city of tacloban are running out of water. because of this, there's looting. i spoke with a family who to told me they came from tacloban. they told me their grocery store had been ransacked and that looters had threatened their lives. they also told me at least seven people had been killed by looters in one of the biggest malls in the city. so the situation in tacloban city has gone from desperate to danger riis and that's why the region has been declared an emergency.

there's one good piece of news. a 21-year-old mother gave birth to a baby at the airport in tacloban, and by all accounts this is a miracle baby. the mother survived the storm by swimming and clinging to a post until she found her way to the airport. an amazing story in the middle of this disaster. anne-marie? >> it is. even under desperate conditions, life goes on. barnaby lo on the island. thank you so much. at the same time some families here in the united states are waiting to hear from loved ones who were caught in the storm. susan mcginnis is in washington. susan, good morning. >> anne-marie, good morning. the president released a statement last night saying he and the first lady are deeply saddened by the loss of life but saying that the people of the philippines share a deep resiliency. meanwhile the storm is having an impact on communities across the country. in los angeles, home to the largest filipino population in the united states, a call to prayer.

and call to action. >> we need to get the nation. >> reporter: at this church a fund-raiser was already planned to help with the earthquake in the filipino nation. now they have a long ways to go. >> they're a third world country so they don't have the things we here in the united states have. >> for many the typhoon affects family members back in the philippines. >> my uncle and mother were talking to their cousins and the last they heard was on friday. the only news they said is that one of my other uncles' houses was completely gone, completely destroyed. >> the storm impacted at least 2 million people and forced some 800,000 evacuations. the area has left devastation, leaving those cut off. >> if our families are okay, i think about those whose lives have been altered dramatically because of this.

>> now, even the most basic supplies are needed, things like soap and toothbrushes and canned goods. the biggest challenge for relief workers will be getting to the areas that have been hardest hit. for all the people who want to help, there's a list of charities on our website at cbsnews.com. anne-marie? all right. susan mcginnis in washington. thank you, susan. new negotiations with iran are scheduled to begin next week. talks on the nuclear program broke down in geneva. skeptical lawmakers are considering new sanctions and are waiting to hear from secretary john kerry this week. marlie hall has the report. >> reporter: secretary of state john kerry will try to reassure skeptical lawmakers who want to keep the pressure on iran. >> we're not blind, and i don't think we're stupid. i think we have a pretty strong sense of how to measure on whether or not we're acting in the interest of our country and of the globe and particularly of

our allies. >> reporter: kerry calls the talk between iran and the six parties a work in progress. the proposed deal would be a temporary arrangement that would have u.s. ease economic sanctions in exchange for some of iran's nuclear program including a freeze of its high-grade uranium production, but the talks broke down wednesday. it was called a fool's game and israel ease prime minister called the deal one-sided. >> iran maintains its ability to produce uranium enriched bombs. it also maintains another route, a blue tone yen water route to make plutonium bombs. >> iran's president said it will not give up the right to make uranium. >> they had a hidden enrich manhattan facility that we had to find out about. we have to make sure that even though we know what the next steps are going to be.
