breaking news. a jetliner carrying more than 150 people crashes and burns near pakistan's capital. up in smoke. dozens of homes are destroyed and many more threatened by a wind-driven wildfire north of los angeles. and gulf coast mystery. on day 100 of the disaster, what happened to all that spilled oil? this is the "cbs morning news" oil? this is the "cbs morning news" for wednesday, july 28, 2010. captioning funded by cbs good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. we begin with the air disaster this morning in pakistan. the airbus jet carrying 152 people on a domestic flight from karachi went down in the hills outside of islamabad.

the pakistani capital. let's get the latest from mark phillips, joining us live from london. good morning, mark. >> good morning. this soon after a crash, the numbers of dead and for that matter of survivors are always change, but it appears there were a number of people who lived through this crash. there had been, as you say, 152 people on board. >> reporter: the plane on a flight from karachi to islamabad crashed as it was apparently trying to land. pakistan is now in the monsoon season. when heavy rains and dense cloud move up from the indian ocean and the weather was terrible. some other flights have reportedly been canceled over the past few days, but it is much too early to conclude what caused this crash. the terrain around the airport is densely forested hills and valleys making access to the crash site extremely difficult. the plane was an airbus 321 and the flight is a regular commuter run between pakistan's largest city and its capital and was operated by the private airblue airline. while there have been safety

issues with pakistan's aviation industry, airblue, which has been in business for six years, has a good safety record. >> the effort now is to try to find survivors. the plane, the airline says, was no more than eight years old and had no known technical issues. and it had not sent out any emergency signals. betty? >> mark phillips joining us in london this morning, thank you. in other news, in this country, a major wildfire north of los angeles is raging out of control this morning. the 500-acre fire is near the mojave desert town of tehachapi. it has already destroyed 40 homes and threatens another 150 structures. the wind-driven fire caught local residents by surprise. >> i was standing outside, visiting with a friend and saw black smoke. and then went in the house and came back out and it was huge, smoke coming from the mountain. >> a small community known as old west ranch has been evacuated.

about 200 firefighters are battling the blaze, but officials say winds driving the flames keep changing direction. this is day 100 of the gulf oil spill disaster. bp's shattered well remains capped and oil is no longer gushing from the sea floor but experts fear more environmental damage may be coming caused by vast amounts of oil lurking deep in the water. let's get the latest now from tara mergener in washington. good morning, tara. >> reporter: good morning, betty. on the surface the oil seems to be vanishing pretty fast. it's what we can't see that's causing the concern. nearly two weeks after bp capped the gushing well, there appears to be less oil floating on the water's surface. but government scientists warn that doesn't mean it isn't still lurking deep below. >> we're currently doing a very careful analysis to better understand where the oil has gone and where the remaining impacts are most likely to occur. >> reporter: federal officials say some of the oil appears to be breaking apart very quickly.

but large underwater plumes have some experts worried. they fear much of the crude is still trapped below the surface after more than 700,000 gallons of chemical dispersants were used to break it up. the permanent solution, a relief well, is still several weeks away. the government is still trying to figure out who should be held accountable for the disaster. the fcc and justice department are preparing a criminal probe of at least three companies. according to "the washington post," bp, transocean and halliburton are the targets of the investigation. officials are looking into whether relationships with federal regulators contributed to the disaster. the latest probe is just another sign at bp's newly named ceo will have his hands full. american bob dudley will replace embattled ceo tony hayward in october. >> we're going to learn a lot, both bp and the industry. i'm sure there will be changes. >> reporter: those changes are already taking shape.

bp plans to sell $30 billion in assets and set aside $32 billion more to cover the costs of the largest oil spill in u.s. history. and bp says it will claim a tax credit for the cost of the clean-up and that could cost taxpayers about $10 billion. betty, we'll see how that goes over. >> yeah, we shall see. tara mergener joining us live in washington. thank you. also in the gulf of mexico, workers are battling a new oil spill. 100-foot plume of oil and natural gas is spewing from a well head just off the louisiana coast after being struck by a passing barge on tuesday. clean-up crews already in the area laid boom around the site and it's hoped the well can be recapped quickly. after months of delay in congress an emergency military funding bill is on its way to president obama. mr. obama asked for the nearly $59 billion measure in february. mostly to pay for the extra 30,000 u.s. troops he sent to afghanistan. passed by the house tuesday, it

pushes the cost of the wars in iraq and afghanistan to over $1 trillion. and as the cost of the afghanistan war mount, public support for it continues to decline. even before the wikileaks website released more than 90,000 secret war documents this week, fewer than 1 in 3 americans believe the war is going well. and the leaked materials could erode support even more. >> the fact is that the revelation of these documents, these raw reports, really brings to the fore all the core challenges we've been facing in afghanistan for a number of years. >> those core challenges include mounting u.s. casualties and afghan civilian deaths, afghan government corruption as well as claims that pakistan is helping the taliban. just a month after breaking up that russian spy ring, federal authorities have charged another young woman with trying to smuggle weapons parts to russia. anna fermanova allegedly tried

to smuggle night vision scopes to russia during a trip in march. she was allowed to complete her trip, but was arrested at her parents' home in suburban dallas earlier this month. she's now free on bond. on the "cbs moneywatch," stocks in asia took off. alexis christoforous is here in new york with the latest on that. good morning. >> good morning to you, betty. that's right. asian markets got a big boost from strong corporate earnings here at home. japan's nikkei added more than 2 2% for it's highest close in two weeks. hong kong's hang seng was up 2%. wall street gets the june durable goods report. tuesday, a drop in consumer confidence slowed the market's winning streak. the dow gained 12 points, but the nasdaq lost 8. homeownership is now at the lowest level in a decade. according to the census bureau, about 19 million homes stood empty in the u.s. this spring because of surging foreclosures. homeownership rates were the

highest in the midwest but lowest in the west. the white house will hold a conference next month to discuss the future of mortgage giants fannie mae and freddie mac. together they own or guarantee about half of all u.s. mortgages. the two companies had to be bailed out during the financial meltdown and it cost taxpayers $145 billion so far. general motors has put a price tag on its new electric car. the volt will cost $41,000. but a federal tax credit will shave about $7,000 off that price. chevrolet is already taking orders for the volt, which runs on battery power with a small gas engine for backup. the official launch date is in november. and you may want to take your mother's advice and remember to sit up straight, especially during a job interview. a careerbuilder survey finds bad posture could sink your chances of landing a new job. the survey of 2500 hiring managers finds body language mistakes like bad posture and a weak handshake could hurt you in a job interview.

prosecutors have two weeks to appeal the decision or hold a whole new trial. sandra hughes reports. >> reporter: after serving three years for being an accomplice to rape, warren jeffs' conviction was overturned by the utah supreme court for incorrect jury instructions. >> mr. jeffs should never have been charged with being an accomplice to rape. >> reporter: jeffs, who led the group called the fundamentalist church of jesus christ of latter-day saints is believed to have 70 wives and 100 children. his lawyers say the state just didn't like his religion. prosecutors say that's not it. >> it's only about warren jeffs because he forced a 14-year-old girl to marry her 19-year-old cousin. that is why he was prosecuted. >> reporter: but the high court said prosecutors essentially put the cart before the horse, charging jeffs before they proved the 19-year-old had committed a rape. the utah attorney general is worried. >> what our biggest concern is,

obviously, is how do we protect young girls, particularly within close societies, polygamist sects from being forced by their leaders to marry older men? >> reporter: he still faces charges in texas of bigamy and sexual assault of children, stemming from alleged marriages to two teenage girls in that state. sandra hughes, cbs news. before the new immigration law in arizona takes effect, some families are moving out. undocumented workers are packing up their possessions and leaving the state. the law takes effect tomorrow. it allows police to investigate the status of anyone they reasonably suspect of being an illegal immigrant. one young woman is worried about being deported. >> i'm having to move because i'm a criminal. and i'm not a criminal. i mean, i'm trying -- in my opinion, you know, looking for a better life and trying to better yourself is not a crime. >> she and her family are relocating to new mexico. the federal government has filed a lawsuit to try to stop the law

los angeles, sunny and 76. time now for a check of the national forecast. the latest satellite picture shows clouds breaking up over the southeast as storms begin to fade away. in the northern plains, thunderstorms continue to move through. later today, the humidity is on the move up the eastern sea board into the northeast. severe weather is going to be hitting the great lakes region as it continues to move eastward. in sports, the texas rangers are running away with the american league central division race. in the bottom of the tenth inning, nelson cruz of texas blasted a walkoff home run against oakland. the rangers' 3-1 win increases their lead over the a's and angels to 8 1/2 games. cincinnati's scott rolen had four hits as the reds pounded milwaukee 12-4, putting cincinnati in a first place tie with st. louis in the national league central. in denver, a freak accident as rockies closer huston street was injured by a line drive

and stormy conditions are going to linger over the southeast and the great lakes region where severe thunderstorms are expected to hit. here's another look at this morning's top stories. a jetliner carrying more than 150 people crashed and burned near pakistan's capital islamabad. it was on a flight from karachi in southern pakistan. and in the desert north of los angeles, an out of control wildfire has destroyed dozens of homes. about 150 more are threatened. well, details about chelsea clinton's secret wedding on saturday have been spreading like wildfire. it's expected to be a posh event with a price tag to match. by one estimate clinton's wedding in rhinebeck, new york, manuel >> reporter: it's the best and worst kept secret in this historic town two hours north of manhattan.

>> so this is the event everybody's talking about but nobody's talking about it? >> that's true. >> reporter: welcome to rhinebeck, soon to be inundated are 400 of chelsea and marc, bill and hillary's closest friend. who made the guest list? jim langan of the local fews says oprah, tom hanks are also invited to the saturday evening ceremony. it's going to be held at astor court, overlooking the sprawling hudson valley. they are speculating about the details. many of the wedding guests are said to be staying at the beekman arms, it has a long history of catering to celebrities and politicians. even george washington slept here. congratulations are everywhere, but anyone connected to the ceremony had to sign a confidentiality agreement. the clintons still won't even confirm it's happening. >> they leaked a bunch of secret documents on the internet about the afghanistan war. did you hear about that? don't worry. the plan for chelsea clinton's wedding are still top secret. >> reporter: discretion is part
