president trump is at camp david this morning. on saturday, we saw a rare and wide-ranging exchange between him and reporters. trump defending his mental stability. standing firm on his border wall. and opening the door with the leader of north korea to talks who he has called little rocket man. >> it was extraordinary. we'll dive deeply into all the news from the president coming up. but we want to start with a developing story this morning at one of america's biggest airports. there are long lines and angry crowds at new york's kennedy airport right now. >> it's sunday morning. the airport is still struggling to catch up after the so called bomb cyclone snowstorm on thursday. jfk forced to reject some international flights. some from germany. passengers have been stranded for days. many of them furious. some sleeping on the ground. including this person sleeping on a heating vent. you have to stay warm. >> i guess. the -- infuriating images don't stop there. look at the sea of unclaimed luggage. the person who pos

information anywhere. let's get to erielle reshef at kennedy with much more. good morning. >> reporter: hey, paula and dan. the airport is still slammed this morning. but trying to get back to normal. over the past few days, passengers so frustrated, some have started to use the hashtag jfk chaos. this morning, a turbulent travel experience for passengers as new york's jfk airport struggles with widespread cancellations and days. >> i have been suck since friday owstorm and the brutal deep freeze blamed for a major backlog. leaving all gates occupied. >> we have to return to frankfurt because jfk won't accept us today. >> reporter: at least 12 international flights diverted or forced to turn around. on several planes, the log jam turning into several hours wait tong tarmac. >> it's hours on the plane. >> reporter: according to the passenger protections,

a hard time limit of three hours. except in specific cases regarding safety, security, and air traffic control-related reasons. >> the management of jfk knew they were becoming overwhelmed, why weren't the planes diverted earlier in it's dangerous to have people waiting so long. >> reporter: after two hours on the tarmac, airlines have to provide adequate food and water. the airlines could risk fines from the government for not complying. they're monitoring long tarmac delays at jfk and will make a decision on monday whether or not to take action. >> real questions need to be asked about where were the contingency plans? why did the contingency plans fail? why was jfk not able to deal with the cascading failures as the storm went on? >> reporter: inside jfk, passengers experiencing massive baggage delays. the luggage steadily piling up. >> we were on the plane for four hours. longer than the flight itself. then we had to wait another three or four hours for our actual bags to come in. >> reporter: and this close call

"fire and fury." that continues to be the president's reaction to the book. not just the title. the president launched into a tweet storm. he even lambasted the author and his book at an impromptu news conference. >> thank you very much. it's great to have you at camp david. a very special lace. >> reporter: on one of the coldest days of the year, president trump was boiling mad about the new book by journalist michael wolff and its disparaging look at trump's first year in office. >> i consider it a work of fiction. i think it's a disgrace that someone is able to do something like that. the libel laws are weak in the country. if they were strong, it would be very helpful. you wouldn't have things like that happen, where you can say whatever comes to your head. >> reporter: the president took particular issue with the assertion that trump's own colleagues view him as mentally unstable. actually, throughout my life, my two greatest assets have been mental stability and being, like, really smart. trump tweete

successful businessman to top tv star to president of the united states on my first try. i think that would qualify as not smart but genius. and a very stable genius at that. >> i went to the best colleges. or college. i went to a -- i had a situation where i was a very excellent student. came out and made billions and billions of dollars. >> reporter: the president insisted he never sat down for an interview with wolff and blamed his former chief strategist for allowing him into the west wing. >> i guess sloppy steve brought him in the white house quite a bit. that's one of those things, i guess that's why sloppy steve is look for a job. >> reporter: he downplayed the investigation by special counsel robert mueller. >> everything i have done has been proper. >> reporter: once again, insisting there was no collusion between his campaign and the russians. >> i guess the collusion now is dead. everyone found that after a year of study, there's been absolutely n

russians. >> reporter: the president went on to say that the russia investigation is bad for the country. that it makes the country look foolish. he's hoping it's going to wrap up soon. that may be wishful thinking. paula and dan? >> wide ranging topics. the president saying he's willing to negotiate with democrats on daca. there's a big caveat, right? >> reporter: that's right. he says he'll negotiate with them on daca, but that his precondition is he wants money for his border wall. they have asked for $18 billion in the first go round. the democrats have said that is a nonstarter. >> meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of young people brought here as children by their parents illegally, their fate hangs in the balance. david wright, thank you very much. another subject. the standoff with north korea. just days ago, trump taunted kim jong-un saying he, trump, has the bigger nuclear button. now the president says he's open to talks. >> he adds that kim jong-un

martha raddatz is in south korea with the latest. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, dan and paula. we're just miles from the north korean border. you can see those military-type bunkers behind me. the talks will take place along that border. just days from now. ♪ with just two days left until north and south korea sit down to discuss the north's participation in the olympic games, president trump giving his blessing. >> if something can happen and something can come out of those talks, that would be a great thing for all of humanity. >> reporter: a meeting, president trump, from camp david, says is a result of his tough talk. >> if i weren't involved, they wouldn't be talking about olympics right now. he knows i'm not messing around. >> reporter: despite trump's threats, taunts, and show of force, kim jong-un is close to perfecting a nuclear-tipped missile that could potentially hit the u.s.

american negotiators unless the north agrees to end its nuclear program. he now says, he's willing to talk to kim. >> i always believe in talking. >> reporter: and there was no one we talked to in south korea who didn't support talks. the fear of war here is constant. the artillery is easily seen from the side of the road. all guns pointing north. the barbed wire. the shelters. the barriers designed to crash on to the roadway if north korean soldiers storm south. but for the moment, says this farmer, there is hope tuesday's dialogue will lead to more. >> translator: hopefully, if the international politics gets better, we want to live in peace. >> reporter: despite optimism about the talks and what president trump is saying there remains concern about what happens next. dan and paula? >> all

reporting from the region. we want to bring in chief anchor george stephanopoulos. let's pick up there with north korea. good morning to you, george. the president told reporters he's open to having talks with kim jong-un. they would come with conditions. he knows kim jong-un should know that he is not messing around. >> though he didn't spell out what the conditions were. it does seem to be some what of a turnaround. they have required north korea to say they will give up their nuclear program before. we seem to be in a new phase. south korea wants to reduce tensions before the winter olympics next month. a significant decision to put off south korean-u.s. military exercises until after the ere does appear to be some kind of reduction in tensions as we head into talks between south korea and north korea. >> except on the president's twitter feed. we saw something extraordinary yesterday. the president of the united

defend his own sanity. in front of reporters and in front of the nation. this has now become a partisan issue with some democrats in congress introducing legislation calling for a mental fitness test for the president. at the end of the day, is anybody's mind going to change? >> you have had several psychiatrists question whether or not the president is fit as well. there's been a long-standing rule or precedent against having psychiatrists diagnose. >> the goldwater rule. >> the goldwater rule. this is extraordinary. the president saying he's a very stable genius. you have the michael wolff book, which has, several people from the president's inner circle, including his own son-in-law, questioning if he has the capacity to handle the job. that question is front and center right now. it's been revealed by this. i don't think it will go away. it's not been only partisan, either. you have bob corker, the republican senator from tennessee, w

the president's capacity for the job in the past. senator lindsey graham. republican. now an ally of the president called him a kook. lots of questions raised and the president's own inner circle. >> it's not like we're on the verge of the cabinet invoking the 25th amendment. >> not even close. not anywhere close to that right now, no. >> the price tag of the wall is reportedly going to be $18 billion. the president says he's not going to extend daca unless democrats agree to the wall. so somewhat the luke likelihood that any of this gets done? >> and the clock is ticking. the government shutdown is approaching on january 19th. the democrats say they want daca included in any bill to keep open the government. i think the big question right now is, is a compromise possible with some kind of border security beef-up that the president can call a wall and the democrats will say is not a wall? i don't know the answer to that question right now. but i think that is what is at the heart of these negotiations. >> it's art of the deati

storm. many passengers on board say they didn't think they would make it back alive. as a powerful bomb cyclone slammed the east coast with snow and whipping winds, a cruise ship sailed right into its path. >> i just sat there, holding my children, like, i can't believe i brought my kids here. and thinking that i don't think we're going to make it back. >> reporter: the norwegian breakaway cruise left the bahamas on tuesday with 4,000 people on board. by wednesday this is what the passengers were facing. hurricane-force winds and huge waves rocking the ship. all that water, flooding in. pouring down the staircase. >> you never want to be on a cruise ship and the water is coming on to the boat. >> reporter: even the water from the pool churning. spilling out. towels at the doors. a downpour outside. black tape put across pictures on the wall, holding them in place. anything not held down, tossed around. some guests not feeling safe in their rooms, moving to the ship's atrium. >> terrified. they were all crng

people had life vests on. >> i knew, if we had to get the life jackets on and evacuate the ship, there was probably no way we were going to make it. >> reporter: finally, friday, hours late for arrival, the ship made it to new york. this morning, many of the passengers want answers. >> i will never understand the fact that they made a choice to take over 4,000 people through a storm. >> reporter: norweigian apologizing to guests saying the ship encountered stronger than forecasted weather conditions. safety of the guests and crew is always our top priority. the ship's captain adjusted the ship's speed and itinerary accordingly to maintain the safest possible route, delaying the ship's arrival. that ship is back out at sea. it was scheduled to leave on friday. that was delayed. it took off yesterday. >> you have to wonder if the explanation/apology is going to
