making news this monday morning. in spite of a whole day of campaigning in florida, mitt romney unleashing new attacks in knockout punches against newt gingrich meanwhile, rick santorum is sidelined to take care of his critically ill daughter bella. we'll have more details. plus, what caused this massive and deadly pileup on a florida highway. drivers under smoky investigation right now. good monday morning, everyone. i'm paula faris.

>> and i'm rob nelson, newt gingrich is hoping campaign appearances with president reagan and his son michael. and it may take some to overdumb the newt gingrich double-digits lead. >> good morning. it looks like newt gingrich is on the ropes with florida, a big state with lots of delegates at stake. he's up to attacks with romney. >> reporter: mitt romney maybe on the edge of a victory. one poll has romney leads by 15 points even with what looks like a big advantage, romney is not letting. you. >> speaker gingrich evening mass painfully revealed himself over these last few days. and it's sad to watch. i think unfortunately, we're see something of the qualities that got him into so much trouble

when he was speaker of the house. >> reporter: for his part, gingrich is trying to turn things around with more harsh words about romney. >> i believe the republican party will not nominate a pro abortion, pro gun control, pro tax increase moderate from massachusetts. >> reporter: the race in florida was much tighter before romney and his super pac launched a barrage of attack ads spending $13.8 million on negative ads since south carolina. >> i responded to his money power and we need people power to offset money power. >> reporter: over the weekend, rick santorum stepped off the campaign trail to care for his daughter bella who was diagnosed with pneumonia. the 3-year-old suffers from a rare disorder. she's proving. >> she's just doing great. we still got a long way to go here. she's without a doubt turned the corner. >> while he was away in

philadelphia caring for young bella, santorum's oldest daughter elizabeth took over for him on the campaign trail. >> is she well enough for her dad to get back on the campaign trail? >> well, santorum is saying that the doctors are indicating that bella should be better and be able to be leased from the hospitals in three four days. she suffers from a condition known as trisomy 18 which would make conditions more serious. but santorum says she is improving. >> thanks tahman. now, in iran, u.n. officials are now under a second day of nuclear inspections. during the stay, the inspectors are likely to visit a heavily fortified enrichment. it's actually dug under a mountain. it will help to determine the next steps under iran's dispute and highly controversial nuclear program. also, this amateur video

showing searing video tanks and soldiers as they moved against rebel fighters near the capital. violence killed more than 60 people. some of the fighting was just three miles from damascus itself. and back here at home, interstate 75 in florida is back open in grothzs this morning, following a horrific deadly pileup. >> the highway shrouded in dense fog and smoke, and a brush fire the wreckage stretched nearly a mile. involved a dozen cars and fire was so hot that parts of the road actually melted. >> unbelievable video there. and a city hall in oakland, california, was certainly somewhat of a mess as well due to occupied protesters who broke in over the weekend. she smashed glass and left graffiti behind.

meanwhile, protesters were arrested. demonstrators took to the streets in new york as well with solidarity with those in california, some were arrested but there was no major violence. well, three members of an afghan family face long prison terms in a controversial case involving an honor killing in canada. the father, mother and their adult son were convicted of murdering the family's three teenage daughters and the father's first wife. prosecutors say the victims were drowned by dishonoring the family by ignoring social rules. the father was calling his dead daughters profit tus saying nothing was more hurt than his honor. police thought they were called to a robbery, when they entered the house, they found the bodies of five young men inside. the police chief says the

company's plans to finally go public. reports say the paperwork for an initial public stock offering could be filed as early as this wednesday. it's a deal worth billions and could leave its founder mark zuckerberg worth as much as $20 billion. a check of market act sift starting overseas. tokyo's nikkei average was down 48 points. hong kong's hang seng was down 320. in london the ftse opened down as well. on wall street, the dow closed 74 points for the week and the nasdaq was up 11. millions of americans are being hit in the walt by record-high prices for beef. the cost of beef has soared 25% in just three years. one reason is the severe drought in the southern plains has pushed the number of cattle to its lowest level in 50 years. well, students at a philadelphia-area middle school will not be wearing those uggs

style boots. the popular footwear has been banned because students are tucking cell phones in boots. of course, cell phones are not allowed in class. administrators say uggs can be worn to school but they have been locked in the kids' lockers. delays expected across the country. >> that's the first time that's happened. turning overseas to italy where officials are saying it coo take up to ten months to completely remove that crippled cruise ship. >> slow going there. efforts to find the missing and to empty fuel from that ship are moving very slowly. meanwhile, we're seeing new and pretty hauntsing video of the disaster scene. with more on this, here's abc's jeffrey kofman. >> reporter: the images show a modern-day "titanic." dishes caught in a net. on the sea bottom, mattresses, clothes, even a black shoe. haunting new pictures captured by divers showing the "costa concordia." with 17 dead and 17 still missing, including a couple from minnesota, recovery operations were suspended because of bad weather. the situation is different in different parts says this italian police diver. some points are not acceptable, especially where the ship is on the rocks.

the immediate focus is on the environment, removing half a million gallons of diesel fuel from the ship's tank before it leaks out. and socialing news about the salvage operation. it may take ten months to remove the stricken ship from the island that doomed it. jeffrey kofman, abc news, london. well, joy quickly turned to misery for dozens of students hoping to get into new york's prestigious vassar college. dozens of students were told they were accepted into the school. they logged on to its website friday but 30 minutes later, vassar says it was a big mistake caused by a systems error. >> she went from total elation to -- the air was knocked out of her. >> i felt like i achieved something and then it was taken away with me. >> many students shared the good news with friends and family, posting it on facebook in some cases. once the error was announced some of them were distraught to even talk about it.
