live and in hd, this is "good morning washington," on your side. this is breaking news. >> we begin with breaking news. a tour bus filled with kindergartners on the way to d.c. crashed on the eastern shores of maryland. we are on the scene. caroline is joining us by phone.

>> they were on their way to d.c. headed for a trip to the national zoo. they were indeed a different and charter buses from war to an elementary school. -- wharton elementary. the bus swerved trying to avoid a crash and it hit a utility pole and ended up on its side. 35 people on that bus in all. 10 adults and seven children were taken to the hospital. one of them is in shock trauma. that is the only serious situation. that student is expected to survive. no fatalities, thank goodness. it seems the bus driver is not at fault, but the driver of the suv will be questioned. there's no word on any charges. there are counselors at the

elementary school right now. the day is going on for these students and there are scared parents at the hospital as their children are discharged. >> if you said one person, is that a student or a teacher in shock trauma? >> i don't know. >> thanks for the latest on this crash. we will continue to follow that. a convenience store employee is shot to death on the job. now police are hunting for tiller. this unfolded early this morning at the 711 on oxon hill road. the suspect rob the store and then opened fire. he's on the run. -- robbed the store. jummy olabanji has more. >> police have been here almost nine hours. this is still a very active crime scene. this entire area is cordoned off with police tape as they search

for the gunman who killed a man who was trying to do his job. steven anderson cannot believe the same store where he regularly buys coffee turned into a crime scene early thursday. prince george county police say after 3:30 in the morning, an employee was cited killed by a robber. the gunman ran from the store leaving a trail of money behind him. >> it's not worth it to take somebody's life for a few dollars. you might as well get a job. >> police shutdown the strip mall several hours as detectives looked for clues and interviewed the other employee inside at the time. >> we do believe we have surveillance footage. >> people living in this fort washington neighborhood worry that the suspect is still out there, while sending condolences to the family of an innocent man murdered while trying to do his job. >> it's heartbreaking and

upsetting. >> prince george's county police are not releasing the identity of that victim. -- who was shot and killed. they're looking at surveillance video. they're asking anyone with information to give them a call. jummy olabanji, abc 7 news. now to the soaring prices at the gas pumps nationwide. they are hitting local drivers hard. the average gallon of gas in the d.c. region is $4.60. some stations are much higher. -- $4.06. some local attorneys general want to know the reason. >> they seem to go up quickly. >> prices at some stations in the metro area climbing while the prices are dropping

nationally. at this largo station gas went up 11 cents overnight. 22 cents in annapolis. one station in manassas was selling regular unleaded canada at $3.99. across the street, 20 cents more . >> they cannot raise the price that much and rely on deceptive reasoning. >> the maryland attorney general wants answers and so does the district. >> i think they are just trying to increase their profits where they can take advantage. >> station owners will not speak to us on camera but this is what they say happened. they say it comes down to the distributors. when the tanks become empty that is when the distributor can raise prices. 22 cents more on monday morning

is what happened. >> that's outrageous. maybe i will go to a different gas station. >> we spoke with representative boose for the maryland-based empire petroleum. he says oil companies are to blame for the surging prices. >> we get a price from our distributors and pass that on to customers. >> aaa says it is no reason for spikes at the pumps and is encouraging distributors to calm down before hiking prices on motorists. from rockville, courtney robinson abc 7. following more breaking news. hundreds of people in several buildings around the lockheed martin complex in virginia have been evacuated after the discovery of a suspicious package. the item was just received around 9:30 this morning at that facility on sunrise valley drive. the fairfax county bomb squad is on the scene. several roads in that area are

closed. we will continue to monitor that around lockheed martin and will let you know what happens. more than a week after the death of osama bin laden president obama's grandmother is being threatened. police in kenya are putting security at the home of his grandmother. a somali-based al qaeda group made a public statement threatening the life of sarah obama in revenge for bin laden's killing. the 88-year-old house is under 24 our protection. in new york city, two men are under arrest accused of plotting terror attacks involving synagogues. few details have been released, but the men were trying to purchase weapons with the idea of staging an attack in manhattan. the police describe this as a homegrown plot and it predates the death of osama bin laden. bin laden was apparently upset over -- obsessed with trying to outdo the 9/11

attacks. entries in journals found in his compound indicates he was more involved in outside of operations than most people realized. he reportedly wanted the next attacks spread out all over the country and to target smaller cities that might not expect to be targeted. more towns along the swollen mississippi river face the threat of flooding today. cities are preparing for the rising water. more than 1000 people have evacuated vicksburg mississippi. in louisiana opening a spillway would spare baton rouge and new orleans but would trigger more flooding in neighborhoods near a swamp in the southern part of the state. it warm sunny day for us in the region. bracing for changes on the weekend. adam caskey has a look at the forecast. such a beautiful week. bad timing, leading into the weekend.

delegate eleanor holmes norton says it is time for some changes and independence for the district. sitting before a house subcommittee, mayor vincent gray and council terra kwame brown. >> the fiscal health of the district is strong. >> the budget calls for cuts and new taxes and focuses on fiscal stability, education, job creation and safe communities. the biggest party for city leaders when it comes to the budget may be autonomy. >> the $5.5 billion that we in rates in the city ought to be within the full authority of the people of the district to make decisions about that. >> control over local funds is something protesters have been demanding for weeks. this is one person arrested during a protest. >> we don't think our elected

procedure is painful but she says she is getting used to it. a german court convicted a former ohio autoworker in the death of tens thousand -- tens of thousands of people. 91-year-old john demjanjuk was found guilty of 28,000 count of accessory to murder and sentenced to five years in prison. he was a guard at a nazi death camp in poland during world war ii. the crew of the space shuttle endeavor this at the kennedy space center. commander mark kelly and his team arrived in houston this morning a day before the countdown clock begins ticking again. it is set to blast off monday morning. this will be the last ever mission into the space shuttle endeavor. it was canceled in april because of an electrical glitch. his wife gabrielle giffords will travel to florida later this week to watch.

this was a scary sight. a bolt of lightning striking an airplane. amateur video shows the lightning bolt passing through that airbus a creatinga-380. it had more than 500 passengers and it landed safely a few minutes later. it did not even have a scratch. it's quite common but you don't get it on tape often. >> a it looks scary and makes for a good picture. they probably heard a big boom. they are designed for that. maybe a little instrumentation could be thrown off briefly but that's all. let's talk about our weather. every day we have been thanking our lucky stars. but it will have to change.

talking about since monday. its is inching eastward later tonight and it will drop a few showers in our western suburbs brief showers tonight and into tomorrow morning. everything will get mixed up as we go into the weekend. this front will continue pushing east tomorrow, increasing our cloud cover giving us a few more clouds tomorrow. maybe a few breaks in the clouds. then we have this upper level system that will push east and will mix things up into the weekend. we don't expect a washout but we anticipate scattered showers off and on throughout saturday and another chance of thunderstorms on sunday. brief showers possible to the west tonight. low to mid 70's tomorrow. we cannot not rule out a few showers on saturday. google map users, you can
