sunday morning... here in the 44-hundred block of north sheridan road... the uptown neighborhood. not exactly the best neighborhood. it always seemed a little sketchy but it never seemed that dangerous. a lot of drugs, gang activity tom schabow is a neighbor... some may say hero now, for stepping up to do a neighborly thing, just as he got home from work about 1-30 this morning. i heard a woman yelling for help and came downstairs. saw a guy on top of her. called the police once i realized what was going on. and when the police got here he tried taking off and i ended up taking him to the ground. police stepped in to grab the guy and took him into custody. he was trying to rape and possibly murder this woman. the woman, was just coming home herself... attacked on the sidewalk, police tape still marks the area.... alerting others to what happened... most now hearing a suspect is behind bars. thats a big relief.. dont have to worry about that. my girlfriend.. now i have to worry about her coming home late. and getting attacked or robbed or anything. so, its just another thing to think about.

whereabouts tonight are unknown. tomorrow he is due in court for the first time >> richard vanecko is facing a count of involuntary manslaughter. he was processed at the leighton criminal court building, friday afternoon. police took his mugshot...and his fingerprints. the 38 year old nephew of former mayor richard daley...now lives in costa mesa, california. the charge stems from the death of david koschman. during an altercation on division street... koschman was knocked to the ground.. hit his head..and later died. that was in 2004. with a special prosecutor -- dan webb-- appointed in april... a special grand jury....re- examined the case. and..the indictment came down, last monday... the grand jury concluding: vanecko "recklessly performed acts ... likely to cause death or great bodily harm to another.." that finding was validation.. for koschman's mother and her attorneys who believe-- for 8 years.. vanecko was protected by clout... the initial investigation botched. i think failures speak volumes....of that

investigation... not so. no favoritism, according to vanecko's attorneys... there were no charges -- they say -- because the facts didn't warrant them. on monday -- vanecko makes his first appearance in court. he's expected to post 10- thousand dollars bond, and will be released to await trial. >> if he is convicted he could face up to five years in prison or probation. his arraignment is tomorrow morning and before things get started the tribune reports the judge to oversee all the appointment of this special prosecutor will also oversee the judge assignment for this case. to avoid any claim of unfair and as he will have a machine it right there on the bench with him that will randomly assigned

a courtroom >> police have charged a man in a series of fires set early this morning in the alley of a northwest side neighborhood. the 23 year-old is charged with arson for five garage and trash dumpster fires. he lives about four blocks from where he set the fires. he was wearing a t- shirt with the chicago fire department's logo as well as engine company numbers but city records show nobody with his name is employed by the fire department. in addition cars were ruins and a nearby doctor's office sustained fire and electrical damage >> police arrested a man at a bar early this morning after he allegedly stabbed another man in the bathroom. the victim said his attacker jumped out of a sterile waving a broken beer bottle and slashing his neck. a third man entered the room and

helped hold the attacker until police arrived. the victim was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released. the 23 year-old was arrested >> former university of illinois football standout posted half a million dollars bond tonight and was released from an irving texas jail. the current dallas cowboys defensive lineman is charged with manslaughter in the death of his teammate and friend. police say he was driving drunk when he crashed his car early saturday morning. today he issued a statement from behind bars expressing grief and sorrow over the crash. if convicted he could face 20 years in prison >> chicago is poised to break an 18 year-old record tomorrow. a record for no snow. remember these scenes from winters past? we have not seen any of that in

high school basketball players -- attending mooseheart high school south of batavia -- will be decided behind closed doors tomorrow. the illinois high school association will decide whether the towering african basketball players will be allowed to play for the school. mooseheart high's player recruiting practices are also under secret investigation. the media and public will not be allowed to attend tomorrow's hearing in downstate bloomington. mooseheart high bills itself as a private residential child care facility for needy children. >> police were on the streets today passing out fliers in hopes of finding a witness to the apparent hit-and-run death of a local teenager. the 18 year-old was on his way home after a friday night out with friends when he was struck by a vehicle. police found him just after 1230 about 2 mi. from his

home. they performed cpr but he was declared dead on the scene from head and neck injuries >> chicagos latino community honored illinois senate president for his leadership in passing highway safety legislation helping undocumented immigrants. the ceremony took place in pilsen. the new law will help of nearly 250,000 immigrant drivers in illinois to get licenses and insurance. >> the reason why we need to pass this legislation... so that everybody will be safe

eight-k run, but santa claus and a couple of his reindeer helped draw a good crowd for the rudolph ramble. the runners' antlers were handed out by race organizers, the bright red noses came courtesy of the cold weather. more than two-thousand runners turned out for the fund raiser benefitting lurie children's hospital. runners donated toys that will make their way to children spending the holidays at lurie. >> ronald mcdonald house charities of chicago and northwest indiana hosted its family holiday party today. it was for families staying at ronald mcdonald house near the children's hospital where their children are receiving life- saving care. there was food and fun for the families whose holidays otherwise might not be too bright because of medical circumstances >> a lackluster week at movie

"the midnight circus" ... chicago's renowned troupe of acrobats, clowns, musicians and other performers, provided the entertainment. metra even served up treats on some of its trains.
