ñ . right now at 6:00. the rush to get the power back on. hundreds of thousands in the dark for another night. >> i had an exciting afternoon. >> tree after tree levelled. it's the clean up after a major storm pounded the region. good evening on this saturday. i'm denise nakano. most people spent part of the day picking up tree branchs or dealing with even bigger messes. we have live team coverage. we begin with miguel martinez-valle. this afternoon a family was rescued? >> reporter: yeah, that's right.

a family finally able to get out of their home, but neighbors still waiting for a big part of that mess to be cleaned up. take a look behind me. i'm here in media, a lot going on. not only are crews working to get the electricity back on for this area, but another crew is eventually going to have come in and try to get a giant tree off the road that has been blocking the roadway causing traffic headaches all around this area. and the tree actually even landed on a part of somebody's home. it's clean up time around much of delaware valley following last night's storm. heavy wind and snow brought down trees like this one. which is why today the patterson family is so happy to hear this sound. >> we haven't been able to do a whole lot. we have a generator so we're trying to keep the refrigerator going. but, yeah, we're ready for them to get the tree out. >> reporter: a tree blocked their driveway leaving the family without power and without

a way to get around. >> feeling trapped is hard. we can't get ice or gas. >> reporter: those able to drive were often stopped by blocked roadways. a tree took down power lines and nearly damaged a home. >> a couple of houses like pretty close to being hit and this house behind you guys took a little bit to it. but it was constant wind and howling. >> reporter: blocked roadways and blocked racials. orange traffic cones were a site on saturday. popping up across the region. now locals are hoping today's clear skies lead to paths. >> it's a snow emergency route. i'm surprised they're not trying to get someone on it. >> it finally calmed down now. now hopefully we can get some response to fix some stuff and get our power back. >> reporter: so back out here live. they're working to get the tree removed. get that power back, which is what a lot of people living here

have been waiting for. so they're saying the mess it happened yesterday evening, but they've been dealing with this road closure with no power and with all of this tree clean up for all of today. so a lot of clean up still left to be done here in media. nbc 10 news. also, in delaware county neighbors are trying to find ways to get around this tree blocking oxford road. you can see the tree caught up in elect carical wires. a curtain helped save a little boy's life when a tree crashed his home. the large tree fell on the rooftop. it caused a lot of damage to the house. glass came flying into rooms. we talked to the boy's father about what happened seconds before the tree toppled. >> i said stay away from the window. come here. and it came in our roof. the whole curtain was around him. this one. that saved his life from the

glass and all the shattering glass over here. >> luckily his son was not hurt. there are so many power outages. peco called in reinforcements today. more than 250,000 people across our region in the dark. most are peco customers with more than 215,000 with no power. ppl has 27,000 outages. ac electric over 10,000. nbc 10 drew smith joins us live as companies work around the clock to turn the lights back on, drew. >> reporter: yeah, and the progress really varies street by street down here, deknees. take a look at the buildings around me they're lit up. the power is back. look at the traffic signal in the middle of the street and it remains out. there are a ton of people venturing around. they don't have power back home. a lot of people realizing it may be awhile before the lights come on. a parade of utility trucks

tonight. the wind finally dying down so they can get to work. >> it's insane. it was insane. insane like crazy. >> reporter: this restaurant able to open for dinner but a limited menu because they couldn't take in food deliveries overnight with no power. >> it's kind of hard because nobody has power in their house and none of the restaurants and local areas have power, as well. it's kind of like everyone is just stuck. what are we going to do? >> reporter: in bucks county, much of the same. trees causing problems for the power grid. damage to all kinds of prod here in yardly. this was last night on ellis road in hammertown. and the fires are out today but the mess substantial. wires tangled up in between fallen trees and wrecked cars. >> the car was stopped right in time, as you can see. >> reporter: the hum of a ge generator a welcome sound to those that live around gary

pergolini. >> we have sump pumps. fortunately i got the winter heat running. >> reporter: and that guy told us he didn't expect the power to come on for him until early or middle of next week. there are a number of warming centers out there. the red cross opened a few. there are local fire companies opening them, as well. if you need a place to go. and if you're without power and your phones and tablets are getting low. comcast is opening xfinity stores. go to any xfinity store and bring your devices. comcast is a parent company of nbc 10. a busy afternoon at 30th street station. slowly trains are rolling again on the northeast corridor. some people had to spend the night at the station because amtrak cancelled all trains yesterday afternoon until earlier today. back on track but with major delays. most of septa's train lines are in service but you have to pack your patience.

one line out of service tonight is chestnut hill east. the main problem is trees landed on the train tracks. as for buses and trolleys, 25 buses are running on detoured routes and septa hopes to restore trolley service sometime monday. high tide this morning at the jersey shore flooded some streets. it was the usual spots. nbc 10 talked to residents who are used to this. they tell us today's flooding wasn't all that bad. >> i definitely think it turned out better. this is a summer residence now but i've been down here my whole life. now this isn't as bad as i anticipate anticipated. >> the next potential obstacle another high tide later tonight. let's get the latest on the weather now with first alert meteorologist steve sosna. >> that's right. the shore points are getting ready for another high tide. and the forecast expectations haven't been met there with the

moderate flooding. that's a good thing. a live look at cape may, new jersey. a pretty picture but we're feeling the fringe effects from the storm, which is almost the size of the united states right now. it's throwing back wind and also the water. the rough surf and potential for coastal flooding. so 8:30 on the atlantic facing beaches minor to moderate flooding here. it looks like sunday during the day you'll see minor flooding in times of high tide. again, each day gets a little bit less worse. and we're going to continue to see that rough surf chew away at the beaches. i'm tracking another potential nor'easter next week. more impacts on that storm coming up. we want to see the storm damage in your neighborhood. make sure you have the free nbc 10 app. take a picture or video and click on see it share it. the secret service confirms a man shot and killed himself outside the white house fence this morning. the white house went into lockdown.

similar situations. we caught up with one of the busiest guys around. a tree trimmer. he had tips for moving around. >> a lot of pines people let them grow. what i would do is tip back the ends and take some weight off them. you know, you got to thin some trees out sometimes to get the air through them better. >> when we talked to dan at k59 this morning, he received 45 calls for help. a south jersey police officer is recovering tonight with serious injuries after a suspected drunk driver slammed into his patrol car. the officer was on route 311 in hamilton township last night. he was directing traffic on to route 50 because of a downed power line. a man crashed into the front of the officer's car. the driver was not hurt but facing a slew of charges. next at 6:00, what happens if a tree damaged your home. does insurance cover it? knowing your rights as a homeowner. what you need to know about storm damage coverage.

>> the girls learned how to make codes that can sense temperatures and motion. and now back to our first alert weather and the poconos got plenty of snow. some parts saw almost 2 feet of snow. this is a live look at camelback mountain. we're in store for a calm weekend but there's another storm on the horizon. and nbc 10 first alert meteorologist joins us now. steve, we're barely catching our breath from the last storm. >> that's right. we're suffering from storm fatig fatigue. it's the calm after the storm. the skies are brightening in philadelphia. here are the three points i want you to know this evening. coastal flood risk at the shore this evening for the high tide and tomorrow. it's a breezy and chilly sunday ahead. the coastal storm for next week confidence is growing in that on a significant storm. but let's just enjoy this evening sunset. cape may you deserve this after what you endured yesterday.

this is the cape may white house. the sky is glowing orange now. you are getting ready, though, for another high tide at 9:18 in cape may. atlantic city your high tide at 8:44. the projection is minor to moderate, all though we hedge toward minor flooding based on the recent high tides we've seen. first alert radar is quiet this evening. certainly good news if you have plans tonight. dress warmly. if you are without power, yeah, maybe you want to stick with a hotel tonight. dangerous here, if you run the generator not in the correct way. we're trying to track this next storm here. it's 3,000 miles away. it's along the west coast. it arrives here by wednesday. and here is a look at it. the storm system by tuesday night redeveloping off the coast. and, again, taking a similar track to the predecessor. the storm we dealt with yesterday. by 6:00 a.m. on wednesday potentially dealing with rain changing to a heavy wet snow, once again. it could be even snowier than

the last storm for many of you. even into enernew jersey. we'll be fine tuning it as the week goes along. the winds doesn't look quite as strong with the storm system. we'll have to watch the trajectory of the winds. philadelphia it's 41. we have a massive storm in the ocean now. gusts 30 to 35 miles per hour. we'll continue to see that chilly windy weather for tonight and tomorrow. feels like 27 in allentown. 15 in the poconos. overnight lows in the lower 30s. the feels like temperature will be in the 20s. but tomorrow don't worry. we have temperatures in the mid 40s. we'll see more sunshine to the west. more clouds to the east. that's partly due to that ocean storm. and highs tomorrow will reach the middle to upper 40s. a generous amount of sunshine. a quick look at the ten-day forecast. here we go. monday is a quiet day. tuesday is a quiet day.

games in florida today. the best team in hockey and the score keeper was busy. early third period the fliers win the face-off. and the wrister makes it 5-3 fliers. later 5-4. long outlet pass creates a two on one for the lightning. the one-timer rips the net. now 6-5 lightning. now fliers bouncing around the slot. ends up with the puck and ties it for the 23rd of the season. it went to a shoot out. and the overtime win. the fliers win 7-6. >> it's tough to be satisfied when you lose, but they played a good game the other side. and their goalie is pretty good. if he's not the best goalie in the league, he's one of them. and he made a lot of key saves. especially in overtime.

meanwhile no big east title for villanova. they lost the chance earlier today. right now villanova leading right now. south visiting saint joseph's. hawks up three. taylor faulk and the board. with a bang and the bucket. saint joe's scored seven straight with some breathing room and win 78-70. tori smith throws out the first pitch. and fernando pitching and anthony hitting. two-run shot. lost to the pirates.
