movement to end her own life. tamron has the latest on that. good morning to you. >> brittany maynard made that decision months ago after being diagnosed with incurable brain cancer. she went through with her promise over the weekend, dying peacefully, surrounded by loved ones. she made her final facebook post on saturday, writing, good-bye to all my dear friends and family that i love. today is the day i have chosen to pass away with dignity in the face of my terminal illness. this terrible brain cancer that has taken so much from me but would have taken so much more. the story of the 29-year-old diagnosed with terminal brain cancer made headlines when she moved to oregon to take advantage of that state's death with dignity act. a video explaining her decision to end her life on november 1st went viral with 10 million views on youtube. >> i don't have to die the way that it has been described to me the way that my brain tumor would take me. >> just last week, a new video,

alluding to a possible delay. >> november 2nd comes along and i'm still alive, i know that we'll just still be moving forward as a family like out of love for each other and that decision will come later. >> reporter: overnight a statement from end of life association associated with with maynard read in part, she chose to abbreviate the dying process by taking the aid in dying medication she received months ago. she died as she intended, peacefully, in her bedroom, in the arms of her loved ones. there were heartfelt tweets about maynard's passing. your story, compassion and fight will never leave me. she modeled the bravery of facing death with dignity. she, not cancer, had the last word. in her last online post, she thanked family and close friends, who she called her ring of support before ending with a final message. good-bye, world. spread good energy. pay it forward. her official obituary released sunday night reading she left

this world with zero regrets on time spent, places been or people she loved in her 29 years. >> seize the day. what's important to you? what do you care about? what matters? pursue that. forget the rest. >> just last month she and her family took a trip to the grand canyon, the last task on her bucket list. in the end, brittany maynard said about her decision, the freedom is in the choice. guys, back over to you. >> tamron, thank you very much. a lot of people will be weighing in on this and sharing their emotions, both positive and in some cases, negative. it is a controversial decision. >> controversial but what a remarkable young woman. >> absolutely. brutal cold being felt by tens of millions across the east this morning. that, after a nasty storm brought snow from maine to the deep south. "today's" dylan dreyer is in a very chilly bangor, maine.

i recognize that winter coat. i didn't think it would be out this early. >> reporter: me either. it was warm when you left. you come back, it feels like the heart of winter and i know you were not gone that long. even hardy new englanders are saying this snow storm hit way too early. that erright. 14 1/2" of snow on the ground here. that's typically what you would see around christmastime, not right after halloween. trying to restore power to the more than 100,000 people that lost it. it's not just the snow, but the cold stretches all the way down south. judging by all this, it's hard to believe that winter is still more than six weeks away. in bangor, maine, this morning, they're waking up to more than a foot of snow. mid fall and already heavy snow and 50-mile-per-hour wind gusts are making highways look downright wintry. snow dusting pumpkins and covering foliage just days after halloween. >> it's funny.

yesterday, you could see i was out here, cleaning my leaves up out of -- putting my garden beds away. what a difference a day makes. >> reporter: in foxborough, massachusetts, wet and white weather couldn't keep patriots fans down. >> this is patriot football weather. i love it. >> reporter: 50,000 runners bundled up for the 44th new york city marathon, making an already brutal 26.2 miles even more difficult. even for the professionals. >> very strong run. >> i feel like i fought the whole way in these tough conditions. >> reporter: even the south couldn't escape early snow. cold temperatures from georgia to the carolinas. skiers, reveling in the second earliest opening at north carolina's sugar mountain ski resort. >> they're great. just getting them warmed up for the rest of the season. >> so cold, records were set in florida. yes, florida, where cold air brought new lows to miami, daytona beach and orlando.

so, of course, november wasn't off to a great start this weekend. the good news is we should already start to turn the corner. by this afternoon, temperatures should rebound down across the south and the midatlantic. >> get back to normal. dylan, thank you so much. warm up. we're also watching a major system coming out from the south. this will be a big impact for a wide south for election day from del rio, texas, dallas, up into oklahoma. we're talking some areas picking up three to five inches of rain. that's going to be spreading to the north. we also have another major system coming onshore into the pacific northwest. and that area is going to be looking over the next 48 hours anywhere from three to six inches of rain. and that moisture down south, that's going to be making its way here into the northeast. and we may be looking at another storm system coming up this weekend. >> al. >> yea! >> happy dance!

>> all right, al. thank you very much. in the meantime, we're learning more this morning about what may have led to that tragic crashative virgin galactic space plane during a test flight. in a moment we'll talk to the company's founder, sir richard branson. first, jacob rascon has the latest on the investigation. good morning to you. >> reporter: matt, good morning to you. the ntsb wants us to be clear, these new facts don't tell us the official cause of the crash. that will take much longer. video and flight data taken inside and outside the cockpit was a mistake by both man and machine. a break in the investigation into virgin galactic's failed test flight killed one pilot and injured another, active chairman saying the tails or feathers of the space plane, which are only supposed to deploy as the aircraft re-enters the atmosphere deployed before the plane ever got into space.

ntsb saying video from inside the cockpit shows the co-pilot, michael alsbury, who died in the crash, unlocked the feathers as the rocket ignited. they don't deploy simply because they're unlocked. video and flight data confirmed nobody pulled that lever. the feathers deployed on their own. seconds later, the aircraft came apart. >> we're a long way from finding cause. we still have months and months of investigation, a lot to do, a lot we don't know. >> reporter: this is the biggest piece of what is left. what would have carried six space tourists and two pilots into suborbit. more than 700 people have already bought tickets including justin bieber, katy perry and leonardo dicaprio. the community is mourning the

loss of alsbury. >> he was a friend and a colleague to, you know, to all of us. never gets replaced. >> reporter: and the surviving pilot, peter siebolt, is recovering after surgery. is he talking to doctors but not yet well enough to talk to investigators. he may prove critical, matt, into understanding what the ntsb just found. >> jacob rascon, thank you very much. sir richard branson is the founder of virgin galactic. sir richard, good morning to you. >> good morning. >> i know it's early and the ntsb is saying it's going to take a long time to have concrete answers. the preliminary ideas that the co-pilot on this flight may have started the deployment process of those tails or feathers at the wrong time, have you seen

that video? can you confirm that? >> i haven't seen the video myself. the ntsb, you know, are leading the investigation. and we go by exactly what they tell us. but, you know, if the deployment did take place early, obviously, they're indicating that may well be the cause. but we need them to examine that further and let us know. >> i know you're taking a wait and see approach, sir richard. but people are already wondering whether this accident and the death of this co-pilot is a crippling blow. there have been delays, setbacks in the past with this program and can virgin galactic survive the image that's now been seen around the world of that space vehicle coming apart at 45,000 feet? >> i think that if we can find

what the ntsb is pointing to, and if that ends up to be the case, that is something which is easy to fix and we can make absolutely certain that, you know, it cannot be done again in the future. so, i think, you know, we have a wonderful spacecraft, spaceship, wonderful 400 engineers trying to make history and they're not going to put down tools. they're going to move forward and create a spaceship company that will be, hopefully, one day the marvel of the world. yes, it's been a horrible setback, obviously, for mike alsbury's family and mike himself but we owe it to him to continue. and that, we will do. >> even as you say we owe it to

him to continue, i'm thinking back to the early days of the nasa programs going into space. although they had tragic loss of life as well, that was about the advancement of science. it was about that giant leap for mankind and rightly or wrongly, people don't see your program in the same light. they think it is more of an expensive thrill ride. so, is it worth the risks? >> absolutely, it's worth the risks. i mean, our program is about many different things. first of all, it's about giving the millions of people who would like to go to space the chance to go to space. secondly, it's about putting up massive arrays of satellites to enable the 3 billion people, for instance, who don't have mobile phone, internet access or wifi access to get them. third it's about point-to-point travel in the future in an environmentally friendly way at a fraction of the time it takes today. and i can carry on.

tamron is here. everybody talking about what happened in chicago. >> do you guys have nails? i passed by to wave at natalie and willie. i saw that tightrope. i couldn't believe it. what it did to sunday night twitter traffic was incredible. nik wallenda successfully walked that high wire between two famous chicago skyscrapers. this was stunning tv. he did it blindfolded, as mentioned. willie and natalie were right there, following the action. social media, guys, 42,000 tweets, mentioning nik wallenda's name still at the top of the google trend and facebook page. some of the tweets that stood out to us. boyfriend just sneezed and i yelled don't make him fall. there were a lot of really cute vines as well. this one set up the process. if you missed it last night -- i know you didn't. this speeds it up. boom, boom, boom.

of course, he said this was perhaps his most difficult challenge yet, to date. >> i was going to say, difficult to watch. i can't imagine how you felt. let's say hello to the man himself, nik wallenda. good morning to you. how are you feeling? >> i'm feeling great, so blessed to be in this amazing city. i have to thank mayor rahm emanual and the entire city for backing me. 65,000 fans joined me on the street here. what an amazing honor it was. >> what strikes me in watching these things, nik, you walk across that wire like you're walking to the bus stop or to the starbucks. you are so calm, cool and collected. was there never really a moment that you felt a little fear, that your heart rate went up a little bit? >> you know, there's no time for fear. i have to stay focused on what i'm doing f i let fear enter into my body that's when an accident can happen. i try to remain very positive and very focused and train properly. it's really about training and preparation, knowing i would be successful making this walk. i never would have taken that first step if i wasn't fully

confident. >> that said, you were going to do a selfie at one point but decided not to. is that because conditions weren't sufficient to do that? >> there were a couple of big gusts of winds that hit me in the face and stood me upright. i was leaning into it. and i thought maybe i shouldn't do this. three-quarters of the way up, jim cantore warned me i was going to face more fierce winds coming off that building. in the excitement or anxiousness, i wanted to get up there because i wanted to see how bad it was going to be. and at the end i thought i did that really quick. i should have stopped. but all's well that end's well. glad to be on solid ground. >> the next walk you did, of course, blindfolded. what's ta like to have that sense taken from you? how important is your vision in doing what you do? how many adjustments did you have to make? >> up until recently i thought it was impossible to walk a wire without vision. my parents always told me to focus on the other end, that's the solid rock, and focus on

that. you'll make it across to the other side. to take that important element out was extremely challenging and wire walking was definitely second nature to me. seven generations, it's in my blood. but definitely challenging mentally. it's very, very draining. there was no time to thenk about it. i knew i had to get over that wire. basically i told myself i'm going to torture you mentally for 2 1/2 minutes but i know you're going to make it safely to the other side because you're prepared. >> you make it look so easy. i know you're planning your next big stunt. feel free to let us in on what it is. do you feel in your heart you will know enough is enough or do you feel that pressure to always be topping yourself? >> no, i really do feel like i'll know when enough is enough. my great grandfather did lose his life and it had to do with his physical ability. it wasn't his age but he couldn't hold on. i have been trained to hold on

don't get so excited. learning to give her a bath was a huge challenge. she cried and i sat down and fed her and then i cried because it was so stressful. does that feel good? >> look at that. >> does that feel good, lovie? now vale loves her bath. she could sit in it all day long. >> do you know how much i love you? >> it would surprise no one that mike is an awesome dad, making funny faces, already making the corny jokes. >> i can tell you anything, too. >> wow! >> i definitely don't want to paint a completely rosie picture. it's hard. you know we didn't get any sleep last night? you get very, very exhausted. i'm terrified to come back to a job where i have to speak for a living because i honestly have a very hard time right now putting basic sentences together. you can do it.

trying to try so hard and hold it together and make this amazing life when i feel unhappy and hiding those feelings. >> reporter: you were doing that? >> yes. that true love, i realized, was the love that was missing inside of myself. >> reporter: for yourself? >> for myself. >> reporter: causing her, she says, to make choices that were hurtful for her, starting years before. you write in the book about a scene when you're on the phone with your boyfriend and your agent is watching you plead with the boyfriend on the phone for yourself and then you come back into the room and she says, wow, you have self esteem issues. >> right. >> reporter: you never had contemplated that you had low self esteem? >> no. i thought i was the tough girl from the bronx, had it all together. i was out in hollywood. nobody -- i had so much common sense and street smarts and all that kind of stuff. >> reporter: how does that work? someone has low self esteem but

they're on television, they're confident enough -- >> in one area. >> reporter: right. they're on stage, looking sexy, looking hot and that doesn't go with low self esteem. >> i had this confidence in what i could do. i did not have so much confidence in who i was and what i had to offer just as a girl. >> reporter: can you work to figure out why you thought you were so unworthy in love? >> it's still a work in progress for me. it's how you feel as a child. being a middle child and being invisible sometimes and trying to get the attention. what did i do? i overachieved. i ran track and won medals every weekend or i would go on the show and steal the show. that would give me a confidence. but there was a part of me that just wanted love, that just wanted to be, you know -- that felt like she wasn't worthy of love, which is why she was trying to do all this stuff. >> reporter: she says that's why when one romance ended she would jump right into another without a break, always mistaking passion for real love.

the whole video? >> the paint. >> what does it feel like being in that room? >> like, just to go wild. >> like a kid again. >> 12-year-old cassidy bowle left her childhood behind to fight cancer. >> diagnosed on a wednesday, friday, first chemo treatment. >> what was she the most worried about. >> losing her hair. >> sixth grade, suddenly she's going through chemo, not going through school. >> tutored the whole year. >> how did she handle the fact she wasn't in school? >> it bothered me eered her. made her sad. >> cassidy is now in the final maintenance stage of treatment. she's returned to school full time, but for some reason she felt the rules had changed. >> some of my friends i used to talk to didn't talk to me. >> why do you think they didn't talk to you? >> because they didn't understand what was going on. >> she was just real quiet. i said, is everything okay?

she's like, yeah. i didn't know if it was her treatment making her tired and wiped out or someone was picking on her. >> okay, guys. just like yesterday. >> after being tipped off that cassidy was feeling left out, her english teacher called an assembly to introduce the kids to cassidy, the star. not cassidy, the kid with cancer. the kids began to understand but it didn't end there. >> grab your sign. >> they were inspired to make a second video, a seventh grade version of what it means to be truly brave, starring cassidy. >> we want to make the point that she really isn't different from all the other kids. >> in this version, cassidy walks the hallways and sits alone in black and white. her classmates grouped in bright colors ignore her. >> we're going to have a few brave students hold up some signs that say brave, but realize they can break out of their clique -- >> walk to the camera. >> the students spend hours

information. but don't overtalk. so if they say, hey, will you tell me about, blah, blah, blah, and you say, sure, what do you want to know? they might say, nothing, i just -- that's okay. i'll talk to you about it another time. so sometimes we as adults, we need to give more information than our kids are ready for. >> kids don't get to have childhood anymore. >> i know. you're racing through everything. >> unbelievable to me. >> i think too parents worry about having this conversation, they think, if i talk to my kids about contraception, and about sex, it means i condone it. that's not the case at all. you're still going to talk about your family values and beliefs, that comes into it. but the studies show that kids who have open communication with their parents about sex are actually less likely to have sex as adolescents. more likely to use contraception if they do. >> by junior high, they should know everything. >> yes. by junior high they need to know. the fact is, certainly what i see in my practices, kids in junior high are starting to experiment. we want them to be fully
