election eve is here. the final push for votes is under way, and we are breaking down the big races that you'll see on your ballot tomorrow. plus, we're off to a cold start, but as you can see, the winds have died down from yesterday, certainly, but it's 37 degrees outside. good morning. this is "nbc 10 news today." i'm tracy davidson. >> i'm chris cato. yeah, the winds were rough yesterday, weren't they? >> yeah, they were, mm-hmm. >> bringing trees down and everything, and now we're chilly again. meteorologist bill henley has your first alert forecast. good morning, bill. >> good morning, chris. those winds also brought the temperatures down for us this morning. that was cold air rushing into the region, and we're certainly feeling it this morning. 30s to start with. live view of boathouse row. you can see the schuylkill is looking nice and calm, but the temperatures, they have dropped, now five degrees colder compared to yesterday at this time in

philadelphia. millville and allentown are eight degrees colder. at philadelphia international, it's 38 degrees, but it feels like it is just below freezing with the winds out of the west-southwest at 9 miles an hour. 40 for northeast philadelphia, mt. holly and wilmington, but those temperatures are still falling, and they will likely come down a bit, especially when you factor in the wind. it makes it feel even colder. feels like it's in the 20s this morning for allentown and millville. back with the future weather hour by hour in less than ten minutes, but right now, let's check in with first alert traffic reporter katy zachry, after we talk to matt delucia, who is out in the cold this morning, experiencing it firsthand in bensalem. good morning, matt. >> reporter: good morning, bill. yeah, it is cold out here. we've got the jackets. a lot of people out here with jackets, but not too many people out this hour. a lot of folks inside at the moment. we look at the flags that are out here just waving gently in the breeze. of course, it is not as windy, as you mentioned, as yesterday, so certainly, the windchill not as bad, but it is still, as you

mentioned, hovering around that freezing mark. but as we look out here in bensalem right now, not a whole lot of activity. a lot of people still inside. folks here getting to the wawa, getting their gas, heading inside, getting their coffee, and people just trying to stay warm. and because the roads are empty right now, hopefully, not too much of a traffic situation. let's check in with katy now on what things are looking like on the road. >> hi, matt. you caught me, i have a live look behind me at route 202 and route 29, and the traffic camera was dipping in and out. it's back now. starting 10:00 p.m. tonight into 5:00 a.m. tomorrow, there is construction between paoli pike and boot road on 202 northbound. so, drivers should be aware of that. but right now, free and clear of any issues in both directions. for drivers headed up to the lehigh valley on the northeast extension northbound between route 663 and the lehigh valley interchange, there is some construction. that should lift in the next hour or so. and taking a live look right now

up in the lehigh valley, route 202 at route 309, free and clear of any issues there. 78 looks good as well. in a few minutes, we'll look at new jersey roads. >> katy, thanks. 4:33 now. new from overnight, police in montgomery county are trying to figure out what caused a driver to crash into a utility pole along haverford road near andover road in lower merion. it was just after 12:30 this morning. officers say the driver lost control of the suv, hitting the pole, which then snapped. that person was not hurt. the road was shut down, though, while crews cleared the scene. also new from overnight, a fire tore through this apartment building in north philadelphia. it started just after 11:00 on north camac street. everyone did make it out safely. investigators are still looking into what caused the fire. it is election eve, just more than 24 hours before voters head to the polls for the midterm elections in pennsylvania, new jersey and delaware. the biggest race that we're watching this morning is, of course, the battle for pennsylvania governor. governor tom corbett will be campaigning in west chester. his democratic challenger, tom wolf, will make stops in lancaster and pittsburgh.

and nbc 10's jesse gary joins us now. jesse, last half hour you talked about a possible election day surprise for pennsylvania democrats. explain that. >> tracy, that's right. tom wolf has spent millions the past year drawing a sharp line between himself and incumbent tom corbett. it has seemed to pay off. the challenger has a double-digit lead, and the full weight of the democratic party, including the president, supporting him. but polling numbers and votes are not the same thing. the lopsidedness in the polls could actually be a disadvantage. >> sometimes when the polls are so skewed, it could bring out the people who are supporting the person who is not expected to win. >> ellen kaplan with the committee of 70 says republicans will scramble this last day to close the gap. democrats try to make sure they don't fumble away the lead. in the next half hour, if tom wolf wins, will that end partisan gridlock? we'll talk about that. >> all right, jesse.

now, in the final push for votes over the weekend, the candidates for pennsylvania governor had some big names campaigning with them. new jersey governor chris christie threw his support behind republican governor tom corbett yesterday in bucks county. corbett has been trailing in the polls, as you know, behind his challenger, democrat tom wolf. governor christie called corbett a tough competitor who has lowered taxes and attracted new business to the state. and president obama came to temple university in north philadelphia yesterday to push for voters who elect democratic candidate tom wolf as the next governor. the president says wolf will fight for the people of pennsylvania. if wolf unseats corbett tomorrow, it will be the first time a pennsylvania governor lost re-election in nearly 45 years. and you can count on nbc 10 for early returns, reaction and live reports on election day. join us starting at 8:00 tomorrow evening. nbc's keith jones will be covering the corbett campaign in pittsburgh. lu ann cahn will be in york with the wolf campaign. we'll also have crews covering big races in new jersey and

delaware. 4:35 now. happening today in chester county, the trial is set to get under way for a music teacher accused of sexually assaulting students. anton foman is accused of inappropriately touching three 6-year-olds that he taught at the school of music. fomin who came from russia to the u.s. in 1999, is also accused of showing nude photos on other students. he was fired from his job after his arrest. the trial is expected to start today for a philadelphia man charged with abuse of a corpse after his mother's body was found stuffed into a freezer. william surrendered to police in july and was placed under arrest. investigators found the body of his 83-year-old mother in a basement freezer at her felt feltonville home. police say the body had been there for about seven minutes. keriskio claims his mother died of natural causes. authorities think he hid the body to continue cashing her social security check. tragedy has sparked change at one local intersection. >> new this morning, the change in pace that drivers will notice

construction begins today on a $36 million bridge replacement project. penndot crews will be replacing the route 422 bridges in north coventry township and west pottsgrove township in montgomery county. that means 422 will be down to one lane in each direction, and the work will take place between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m. now, your nbc 10 first alert weather with meteorologist bill henley. >> it's a cold one this morning. look at the temperatures. 30s for reading and philadelphia, 38 degrees. while cape may is at 45. that's cool for cape may. look at the wind. finally, it's dying down after a very windy day yesterday, but just enough breeze to give us windchills that are in the, right around the freezing zone. 6-mile-an-hour wind in allentown. it is 8 for wilmington and northeast philadelphia, which puts philadelphia at 31 degrees for the windchill. it feels like 29 in millville and 20s for allentown and the pocono mountains. a cold start but a sunny day ahead, and we will see a warmer

one pilot was killed, another seriously hurt. the investigation is months from being completed. police in california say they have made multiple arrests in connection with a hit-and-run that killed three teenagers on halloween. investigators are expected to hold a briefing later today. the crash happened in santa ana on friday night. 13-year-old twin sisters and their 13-year-old friend were hit and killed while out trick or treating. more than a week after a deadly school shooting in washington state, classes are expected to resume today. police say 15-year-old jaylen fryberg opened fire inside the cafeteria. four people, including fryberg, have died. two victims are still in the hospital. they are the suspect's cousins. students will not be allowed to use the cafeteria when they return today. family, friends and the community will remember longtime boston mayor tom menino today. thousands came out yesterday in the rain and snow to honor the 71-year-old. his funeral will be held today. he had been diagnosed with cancer earlier this year, just after leaving office. he was the city's longest serving mayor. a civil trial is set to

begin today involving a former professor at the university of pennsylvania who beat his wife to death. rafael robb killed his wife inside their king of prussia home in december 2006. he pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter and is in prison now. ellen robb's family wants her estate compensated and money provided to the couple's daughter. the daughter, who is now in college, will testify during the trial. 4:46. now the latest on the capture of accused killer eric frein. authorities are testing a rifle recovered from that abandoned airport hangar where he was found. they're trying to figure out if that's the weapon used to murder a state trooper and wound another in that ambush outside pennsylvania state police barracks. frein was captured, as you know, thursday night, near the hangar, ending a seven-week manhunt in the poconos. and now that he's behind bars, business owners in the area where the search was conducted are hoping things will get back to normal. a number of businesses say that the search hurt their bottom line. some lost up to 30% of their normal business. but yesterday, customers started to return to restaurants and

shops, now that frein is no longer roaming free. once again, tomorrow, as many of you know, is election day, midterm elections, and candidates will spend today delivering their final argument. and this morning, we have a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll that shows that it could be a tight one tomorrow. nbc's tracie potts reports from washington. >> you've got to ask yourself, who's going to be fighting for you? who's going to be on your side? >> reporter: he's not on the ballot, but republicans insist tomorrow's election is a referendum on president obama. >> a vote for greg orman is a vote for obama. >> his failed policies go by the name of michelle nunn in the state of georgia. >> reporter: a new nbc/"wall street journal" poll shows 46% of likely voters want republicans in charge of congress. 45% want democrats. >> our ground game is whipping their ground game. the economy is usually what turns voters' direction. so, we're feeling good. >> reporter: in key battleground states, georgia, kentucky, louisiana, our polls show republicans ahead or gaining.

it is dry, and we will see sunshine. bright sunshine to warm things up. and there's really no organized systems coming our way for the next few days. they'll wait until later in the week. so, today we will see temperatures climb above yesterday by about ten degrees. near 60 degrees this afternoon, and the winds will still be kicking, but up to 15 miles an hour. that's about 30 miles an hour slower than yesterday at the peak. 65 tomorrow. doesn't that look beautiful? sunshine will be bright for tuesday, but it starts to fade wednesday. wednesday will still be mild, a high of 66 after a morning low temperature of 49 degrees, but the clouds will be building in wednesday night and thursday. we'll likely see some rain showers move into the area. 63 the high on thursday with the rain. showers continue through the night into friday morning, and then we'll see clearing skies, high of 58 degrees on friday. and once the clouds leave completely, the temperatures come back down for the weekend. saturday and sunday are looking chilly with a high of just 50

degrees. >> glad to see the 60s return today, though, at least, after that cold day yesterday. let's get a check now of traffic out there. >> katy zachry is watching the roads for us. what are you seeing, katy? >> it will be a great relief to have that warmer weather, especially if you washed your car already this morning and felt how cold it is outside. starting off at 422 at trooper road. we're seeing some of the headlights and taillights pick up. there are more cars on the road, but it's not accounting for any issues on the expanse of 422. there is some construction to tell you about, 422 eastbound, the ramps to and from armand hammer boulevard, they are closed until later this month. and if you're on 95 right now, well, average speeds in both directions right near allegheny avenue are in the 50s. so, that's great. if you know 95 well, you know that's going to change. and a live look for delaware drivers at 95 right near route 1, again, in delaware. when i see you in a few minutes, we'll look at new jersey roads, but all of your area bridges look clear at this time. ♪

ah, the sounds of a popular festival that returned to south street this weekend. giant puppets, dancing skeletons and traditional mexican music were all part of the fun at the dia de los muertos, or day of the dead festival yesterday. cool face paint, too. the celebration honors departed loved ones while celebrating the circle of life. and thousands came out for this charity race on the ben franklin bridge in spite of the cold weather yesterday. they were really bundled up here. organizers say about 3,500 people ran the 10k, another 500 walked. this annual race supports a school in south jersey for children with special needs. all right, he has done it again. highwire artist nik wallenda defied death twice in one night. he completed a heart-stopping stunt in chicago last night, in case you didn't see it, walking a wire between two skyscrapers that span the chicago river. as if that wasn't good enough, he did it again, and this time, on the return trip, he did it

blindfolded. no net, no harness, apparently, no fear. wallenda is a member of the famous flying wallendas, a family of circus and daredevil performers. still ahead, it's that time of year when a road block could be lurking on the side of the road. well, those creatures there will tell you the local counties where the deer danger is worse than others. and decoding baby talk. new research points to whether moms or dads are better at that and who needs to be speaking up. ♪ music

december. >> and when you see one, there are more. wildwoods' iconic welcome sign starts a makeover today. the 7-year-old landmark located on the boardwalk at rio grande avenue will be completely refurbished and resurfaced. however, the logo will stay visible throughout the project. the front letters will be removed first, then the background letters. the project is expected to take about two weeks. delaware's wilmington university is expanding. that school has announced plans for a new campus in new castle county. according to "the news journal," it would be located along route 202 in beaver valley and brandywine hundred, and it would include three classroom buildings. work is expected to begin in 18 months. about 19,000 students are enrolled at the school, ranked as one of the fastest growing non-profit universities. ♪ yeah, some mummers music there. they were on hand to help the eye institute of salas university look out for kids event yesterday in elkins park. that event began in 2007 and

raises money to make sure local schoolchildren get vision screenings, eye exams and glasses that they need to succeed. philanthropist bill gates says he wants to end malaria in his lifetime and will give more money toward that goal. it's part of his broader fight against tropical diseases. the microsoft co-founder said his bill and melinda gates foundation would increase its malaria program budget by 30% to more than $200 million a year. malaria's spread by mosquitos and is a leading killer of children, especially in africa. gates also has committed $50 million to fighting ebola. a new study is shedding some light on baby talk. >> more specifically, who's talking to babies. dads, you may want to listen to this one. not surprisingly, the study found that babies heard more words from mom, but not just because moms are usually the primary caregiver. even when both parents were in the room, researchers found that babies heard three times more words from moms than dads. they also found in most cases that fathers only engaged in

baby talk when mothers were in the conversation, too. well, the president of delaware's punkin chunkin organization has announced his resignation. according to a news journal report, john huber resigned by e-mail, saying he will not serve another term. in that e-mail, he referenced bullying in the organization. last month, you'll remember, the pumpkin launching competition was canceled for the first time because they didn't have a location. an election to find a new president is planned for january. well, smartphones could soon make checking into a hotel easier. new programs are being tweaked that would allow guests to check in and even unlock their rooms with their phones. those features are available at just a few chains right now. hotel companies say they're always looking for ways to streamline the arrival process. well, the postal service has released the deadline to mail your holiday packages this year to make sure they get where they're going on time. the first-class international mail and priority international mail, december 2nd is your deadline. first class and priority packages within the u.s. should be ready to go by december 20th.
