he had the deadly virus. >> here's the situation. i need everybody to sit down. i need your attention, okay? it's going to look worse than it is. >> reporter: on a us airways flight, hazmat units were called in after one passenger reportedly sneezed and then said he had the ebola virus. >> i've done this for 36 years. i think the man that has said this is an idiot. and i'll say that straight up. >> reporter: that was just a scare. but the reality in west africa is stark. the head of the centers for disease control saying if ebola is not stopped, it could be the worst global pandemic since aids, which has killed millions. >> in the 30 years i've been working in public health, the only thing like this has been aids and we have to work now so this is not the world's next aids. >> reporter: the pain and death of ebola in africa is overwhelming. the charity street child has released this video of a

17-year-old boy who, in just three months, has lost his father, stepmother, grandmother, sister and brother to ebola. >> they passed off. they died. >> reporter: orphaned and caring for his 12-year-old brother, his message to the world? send help now. >> i'm begging, come to our aid. >> reporter: but with corrupt or inefficient governments in west africa, supplies aren't always getting where they're need. these shipping containers have been sitting on a dock in sierra leone for months. >> the global response has been totally late, inadequate. >> reporter: in texas, the state health department is considering investigating the dallas hospital that treated thomas eric duncan. the hospital is defending its doctors saying they evaluated duncan for four hours when he first showed up in the e.r. his condition did not warrant admission, the hospital says. duncan was not able to receive a blood transfusion from a survivor of ebola because his blood type wasn't compatible

with any donors. this morning a sheriff's deputy who had been inside duncan's apartment and was feeling ill is back home. he does not have ebola. one other piece of good news. ashoka mukpo received blood donated by the survivor kent brantly. ashoka's parents talked to brantly by phone and said their son can't thank him enough. whether it makes a difference or not, his father said, we don't know, but it makes a difference to me to know there's people out there in the world. kim jong un has not been seen publicly for 38 days. andrea mitchell is nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent. what's going on here? >> it's unclear. no sign, willie, of kim jong-un today even though it's a major political holiday for his regime.

only sparking speculation that something is seriously wrong with the young dictator. closely watching north korean state television for any sign of kim jong-un. at this year's celebration of the workers celebration party. the young dictator was last seen more than a month ago, walking with a noticeable limp. >> if kim jong-un does not attend events commemorating the workers party of korea this weekend, it will add to the rumor mill about why he has not appeared in public. >> reporter: the rumors are already wild. is the overweight dictator suffering from gout or a more severe illness? has he been overthrown? a coup could even lead to civil war in a renegade regime armed with nuclear weapons. >> whoever doesn't win in that competition will be dead sooner or later. >> reporter: consider what happened to kim's uncle, the power behind the throne until

tensions, of course, already high in the area following the shooting of michael brown two months ago in ferguson. isis targets near the syrian border are reportedly having an impact. they've lost equipment and personnel in the area. kobani is a significant syrian town on the turkish border dangerously close to falling to isis earlier in the week. u.s. military says in the last two days they've carried out 23 different air strikes in and around kobani. more trouble this morning for nfl star adrian peterson, facing child abuse charges. a texas prosecutor wants him back in jail after what peterson allegedly said during a drug test. gabe gutierrez is in conroe, texas. good morning. >> reporter: natalie, good morning. in a new court filing the district attorney said peterson admitted to the person giving him the test that he, quote,

smoked a little weed. that drug test was on wednesday when the minnesota vikings star running back made his first court appearance. is he charged with reckless or negligent injury to a child after he says he disciplined his young son earlier this year with a tree branch at his texas home. will peterson be arrested again? right now, no one signed the order because there's a pending court hearing possibly for next week to decide whether this judge might be removed from the case. peterson's attorney says that he will wait until then to address these new allegations of marijuana use. so today, peterson, one of the nfl's biggest stars, remains free on $50,000 bond. natalie? >> gabe gutierrez for us in conroe, texas. thanks, gabe. saddled with an unwanted visitor when a pony tried to turn itself in. someone tried to shoo it away when it walked right in through those automatic doors, but to know avail, turns out the pony came from a nearby field and now it is back home with its owner.

accounts of the birthday party turned brawl. the 20-page document includes reports from five police officers on the scene with interviews and accounts for more than a dozen witnesses, including sarah, todd, bristol, willow and track palin. daughter bristol is named as a suspect while track is named as a victim. one report says bristol appeared heavily intoxicated and upset. bristol recalls that the host of the party cory clingen myer dragged her. she didn't have a clue whether she hit him or not. bristol was the one who was assaulted, the pailins say. klingenmeyer says bristol assaulted him. he says he lets her hit him five to six times and that she was hitting him pretty hard. after the fifth or sixth punch

right now. alleged ebola scare on a us airways flight from philadelphia to the dominican republic. when the plane landed, it was held iniesilation. four workers in hazmat suits walked on and escorted the man off. malala yousafzai was one of two people awarded the nobel peace prize this morning. she, of course, is the pakistani girl shot by the taliban for promoting education for girls. she is the youngest person to ever win the prestigious award. examining a taxi cab once driven by jesse matthew, suspect in the disappearance of uva hannah graham and linked to the death of virginia tech student morgan harrington. the cab was found on a farm. matthew was reportedly driving it the night that harrington disappeared in 2009. matthew and other cab drivers were interviewed at the time. meanwhile, coming up, could you be living next to dangerous

would go on, the perpetrator would have free reign to their victims wherever they find them. >> reporter: the wholesome reverend on the show "7th heaven" raising eyebrows now, a comment about his then co-star, jessica biel, who appeared nearly naked. at the time, collins told the daily news, quote, as a parent of a young daughter, this is very disturbing to me, calling the photo spread child pornography. stephen collins has stayed out of the public eye this week. but his lawyer, who has not responded to nbc requests for comment told tmz the actor's soon-to-be ex is trying to blackmail the actor. >> hallie, thank you very much. now over to willie. thank you, tamron. a follow-up on an nbc news investigation on artificial turf fields that has a lot of people

talking. stephanie gosk is here with reaction to the report. good morning. >> good morning, willie. we asked people to get in touch with nbc news and share their stories and comments about artificial turf fields and they have. this has hit a nerve with a lot of americans, including a congressman from new jersey calling on the cdc to do more research. women soccer coach amy griffin first started asking the question, are the fields safe, when two of her own players were diagnosed with cancer. one of them suspected it may have something to do with the small, black dots on the turf known as crumb rubber. now that our viewers have seen griffin's story, they are sharing their own. from colorado, reaching out to us about her daughter. >> we always had kind of discussed the link, potential link to the soccer field and so a co-worker of mine sent me the link yesterday and said oh, my gosh, look at this. when i read it, i thought oh,

wow, this is so close to home. >> reporter: faye played soccer since she was 4 and was diagnosed with hodgkin's lymphoma at age 16. >> i had one more research to be done and figure out exactly what's going on, on these fields. >> reporter: a father writes about his son, former college football player now battling leukemia. i feel sick to my stomach that the artificial turf can have so many chemicals. a cancer survivor from texas writes that she played soccer on turf at least twice a week her whole life and is keeping her kids on the local team. lessons on the soccer field far outweigh the ifs of the ground they play on. there's been no scientific link established between crumb rubber and cancer. synthetic turf council says we sympathize with those individuals who are battling a serious illness, citing numerous studies adding the prepond rans of evidence shows no negative health effects associated with

crumb rubber and synthetic turf. advocacy groups and doctors say the studies that exist are limiting and more research needs to be done. some of our viewers would like to help. cancer survivor from ohio says i know that sharing my story and adding it to the research will help other athletes in the end. the consumer product safety commission has also asked that people reach out to them with stories about artificial turf. when we asked the cpsc for an interview in response to our investigati investigation, the agency declined our request. willie? >> steph, we've got some of the synthetic turf right here. this is nothing more than ground up tires and rubber, is that right? >> that's right. let me give you a little history of artificial turf. in the '80s, it was basically carpet on cement, totally unforgiving. then this popped up, polye polyethylene fibers, like grass and then ground-up tires, car

or you can do cheeseless and we bake this with olive oil and herbs and then toss it with this, with the squash. so you don't have to have the cheese if you don't want to. my daughter loves cheese. it is a good thing. you bake this off, 375 for about 15, 20 minutes or so until it is golden and cheese is melted and then take the roasted squash and i put it right over the top. you can cut it up. i'll show you. >> i tried to peel it. i couldn't do it. >> you couldn't do it? take it and it should come off pretty easy. sometimes it comes off a little easier than others. >> we take your word for it. >> you can eat the skin if you want to and then just plop it on top and what i like to do is top it with a little bit of arugula for some color. and then drizzle olive oil and salt and pepper on it and this can be your finishing touch. this is great for kids to do, great to serve at a party, cut it up in little squares. >> amazing to look at your little girl and your snacks are like this stuff. we got ritz crackers and peanut butter. >> a lot of moms, kids come
