>> it is. i have been upset with the details. you look at that picture of that little girl what she must be facing as described by her mother. >> a beautiful little girl. we will get to that in a little while. serious case of ebola diagnosed in the united states a. dallas community is on edge after we all learn about serious missteps in the handling of that patient. this morning, a person is being held in isolation at a hospital in hawaii over fears that that person could be infected with the virus. we have a lot of questions. we will talk to dr. nancy snyderman and dr. emmett oz in a moment. but we begin with national correspondent kate snow in dallas. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, matt. the dallas independent school district is telling parents, send your kids tole 62, everything is safe. i can tell you, a lot of parents are too afraid, keeping their

children home t. nephew of the patient treated in this hospital behind me for ebola. he says he believes hospital hearn nel here did the wrong thing. he says they put people at risk by not acting fast enough. . >> he's doing it right. highs fighter. he's still fighting. >> reporter: this morning the nephew of thomas duncan is making explosive new allegation, accusing texas health presbyterian dallas of not taking the ebola threat seriously. when duncan walked into the e.r., he told the nurse he had come from liberia. >> that information is not fully indicated. >> reporter: he was sent home with antibiotics. on sunday, an ambulance took him to the same hospital. his nephew says doctors weren't treating duncan like a potential ebola patient. they say they called the centers for disease control himself. >> i called the cdc. some actions, i was concerned for his life and he wasn't

getting the appropriate care and i feared as a people my ooilt might also get affected if he wasn't taken care of. >> reporter: we know he traveled and once he started feeling sick, he came into contact with up to 18 people. >> the only close contact we are aware of of this patient was with his immediate children and his wife and so now we're looking at close friends. >> reporter: on wednesday the school district spoke to parents telling them five students are now being monitored because they may have been in contact with duncan. >> they were in school earlier this week. >> do you know when they started staying home from school? >> today. >> you got to remember. if the children have not shown any symptoms. the only way this transmission happens is when you are showing symptoms. >> reporter: are their classmates safe? >> their classmates are safe. >> i just started crying.

i was like hysterical. >> i just wanted to get to my kid.lso i went and got him and i feel e felt much better when i got him. >> reporter: we reached out to the hospital and to the state health department for comment last fight. i haven't heard anything back just yet. meantime, we are learning a lot more about the travels of this gentleman. we told you he boarded a brussels airlines jet from liberia to the belgian capital. where le had a seven-hour layover and he went on to dulles in washington, d.c. where he had a three-hour layover before finally flying here to dallas t. two u.s. aircraft he flew on we have been told have since gone on to nearly 30 other cities. it's very important to note, though, the cdc says he was not symptomatic on any of those flights, therefore, they think no risk to the flying public. >> kate snow. thanks, very much. the ebola outbreak has killed more than 3300 people in west africa t. majority in liberia

where thomas duncan had traveled from to the u.s. now the team from the cdc has traveled there to take closer look at the screening procedures. nancy snyderman is in mon rovia liber why. good morning, nancy. >> reporter: good morning, tamron. unfortunately we have no end in sight. we are talking about americans now in this part of africa, it is out of control and it's in the belly of the beast. liberia is on edge as it struggles to contine the outbreak t. urgent message on billboards across the capital estimate ebola is real. even a marching band spread the word. as we left the city, crossing from one county to another, all traffic was stopped police ordered people to exit their vehicles an get tear temperatures checked. an elevated temperature can be

died in his car while awaiting treatment. too little help is coming too late for too many. as we talk about the virus, a reminder again, you cannot get it casually. you must come into contact with bodily sewage, vomit, diarrhea, blood, the important diarrhea. a lot of patients experience, but a sobering and important reminder today. if it is not contained here, we will see other cases around the globe. matt. >> that's for sure. nancy, thank you very much. dr. emmett soz with us. he's the host of "the dr. oz show." the head of the cdc says there is no doubt in my mind, we will stop it here a. lot of people want to believe those words. when you hear about the missteps at this hospital in dallas, when the patient went in, had the symptoms, told people he traveled from liberia and was sent home with antibiotics. it only takes a few mistakes like that to create a different

problem. >> i think they've crafted a wonderful strategy for how to deal with ebola. the problem is, people have to follow the strategy. if you go to the hospital, you volunteer that you are going to go to west africa. people can't act on it. >> that reminds them how flawed fundamentally we all r. here's the reality. it will get worse before it gets better. >> how much worse will you see? how big a spread will you see in this country. >> the cdc estimated 1.4 million cases. the problem is, take mr. duncan's case, here's a man who abruptly resigns from his job. then he watches his neighbor's daughter seven months pregnant die from ebola. she is turned away. would you leave liberia? >> i would leave liberia. >> people in west africa are going to try to leave anyway they can. i don't blame them for trying to come to this country. >> we know mr. duncan came into contact with five children who went off to school. there is fear of parents who

have children in zheels. i seen reports of parents going to schools, picking their kids up. not symptomatic. taking them right to a hospital to be checked. that's not what we want parent to do, is it? >> we don't want that to happen. to emphasize this, i am very confident we will get our arms around ebola. in west africa, it's a rudimentary care. we have done well with the case tracking techniques to be able to identify contacts and get them what they need. at the very core, it's not about panic. it's about how we stress the system. >> we are entering the flu system. people will be presenting with all kind of symptoms that seem imlar to ebola. how much will that complicate things? >> i have two fears. the flu, unfortunately. it looks like ebola early on. tens of thousands get it. when all these folks come to the hospital win can't keep up. the second fear i have matt

neighborhood far from where she lives where she is obviously different in appearance and not overtly welcome. but she insists the suit is not about race. >> i don't find any problems with that for raising this child as far as i'm concerned. >> reporter: nbc news reached out to the mid-west sperm bank, but they declined to comment. their lawyer hanging up on us. she and her partner provided these pictures to nbc news and say they're not worried about what their daughter will think of the lawsuit when she grows up. >> and she will understand that it wasn't about we didn't want you. we wanted a white baby. that's not what it was about. >> she says while her family is loving, they don't understand her lifestyle as a lesbian. she is worried how they will unconsciously treat her daughter which is why she wants to most. she is suing in excess of $50,000. karen. >> all right. thank you. >> there are many layers here.

of any kind? >> i love hearing every one of them that said i'm a survivor. that gives me the hope that you, too, can be a survivor. the morning we will bring you powerful voices of three women, one currently battling stage 4 metastatic breast cancer. we ask them to share their fears, their advice if their own words. >> i was scared. i thought i was going to die. it really hit home that i was 32 and my mom died from breast cancer at 34. >> i bought the the results in and she said i'm sorry, it's lit up in several other yeah, your lung, your spleen, your chest walls. she confirmed i had stage 4 metastatic breast cancer and i was devastated and i felt like i was going to vomit. like i had been punched in the

gut. >> i think reality really set in once i arrived at my doctor's office that afternoon and, you know, she just hucked me and is she realizes this is real. i really have breast cancer. >> we were shocked and devastated and i was so young. i was a new mom. my whole world was consumed with the baby and being mom. >> i can remember a time within i was lying on my bed and i started to think of being home with my mom because i couldn't take it anymore. because everything had a side effect. the cheem morrow had a side effect. the med kin for the chemo had a side effect. >> i couldn't get out of the

bed. my mother you know would come in and check on me. i could i didn't want to exist at that moment. you know, because i just couldn't figure out why me? but then that voice said, why not you? you have a story to tell. you can help others. >> i told every woman that's going through this journey, you are not just a survivor. you are a conquerer. it's a mindset. you got to have that mindset to get through this journey. >> it's hard to take. no matter what. stay positive. be healthy. exercise, prey. meditate. basically believe, believe in yourself and know that you will be able to be here. >> you have to push. if you know something isn't right with your body, you have to push for what you notice is best and whether that, if that makes you sound crazy in some doctor's minds, so what. it's your life. >> there may not be a cure for

cancer, but you can do it. there is not a cure for the common cold either. that's how i look at i. you know. >> there is confusion because they don't understand why they're going through this journey the same way i felt. so what i try to do is to listen and to share with them, you know, my story and let them know i'm here for you. >> i try to remember all the things people have done for me. when i have the energy if i'm able to pay it forward to another person who may want to see those things. >> greated a voice, powerful words. we will have stories on today.com. we need so much more especially for metastatic cancer. >> you heard women that said

apparently the family communicated to nurses at the hospital that he had been in liberia. we know how this man apparently got was infecting people. he was acting as a good samaritan and helping a neighbor's pregnant daughter go to the hospital. when she died he came in contact with the deadly virus and he flew here to the united states, not exhibiting signs and symptoms at that time. so it's a frightening story. i think as we had dr. emmett oz on earlier, what is so scary for all of sus that this is all happening during cold and flu season you know those early symptoms are fevers and some of the usual symptoms of the flu. >> the cdc works with the government. you don't necessarily think 80. you have to look at all those

tantrum. we are talking about running up and down the aisles. the woman wrote a blog post about the situation. she said the child's parents allowed the girl to run wild the child was punching apparently other passengers, screaming uncontrollably. she and other passengers didn't intervene. the flight attendant pushed the child to the side and push the cart up and down the aisle. so they didn't get involved in it. so what do you do in that situation? do you speak up? you are on that flight for seven hours. this is a child who is running up and down the yachlt i think you have to speak up. you have to talk to the flight attendant. >> i think you let them handle it. >> i certainly would never touch another kid. excuse me, ma'am, your kid is running all over the place. absolutely, out of politely and respect for the plane full of

right now at 11:00, we are learning new details this morning about a texas man infected with the ebola virus. health officials say as many as 80 people have had contact with him. none of the people being monitored are showing symptoms. thomas eric duncan is in a hospital getting treatment for the disease. he came down with ebola after returning from liberia. the people being monitored are the group of 12 to 18 who first came into contact with the patient as well as others who that group may have had contact with. duncan's nephew is
