4:00 am
a warehouse fire burning in philadelphia. people are injured. people are also evacuated. flames are lighting up the sky in west kensington right now. several fire crews on scene trying to get control of this one. live team coverage this morning. good morning, this is nbc 10 news today. i'm chris cato. we'll get to your weather and traffic in just a moment. first to that breaking news. katy zachary live in west kensington. this fire has been burning for more than an hour now and you say the heat is still really intense out there. >> it has subsided a little bit, chris. i want you to look behind me because you'll see dozens of philadelphia firefighters have been working on this and have
4:01 am
made a lot of progress. i don't want to say it has been put under control because we can still see a lot of flames and a lot of smoke, but they ihave gotten a handle on it. that is safe to say. as we are looking right now at the 2400 block of cumberland street a massive warehouse that spans one block, maybe two blocks spans very large in space and when we pulled up to the scene it was intensely under fire. when we go to our video ethe flames were leaping from the three-story building and they were stretching at least a block. several adjacent buildings to this warehouse also caught on fire. the exact address is 2411 north american street. we did some digging and we understand that's american supply and storage company. police on scene told me this was a paper factory, but the information that i have is that it is a commercial storage and warehouse. so, from what we ecan ascertain from that it stores things that commercial level.
4:02 am
some people were telling me eit is an abandoned building. that's hard to believe. again, when we pulled up the flames were so intense that smoke was so thick and black. we heard several small explosions from inside. so eit leads you to believe that it was filled with things. there was also a transformer that exploded. probably about a half hour ago eand that really shook people. we're standing on the corner of 2400 block of oriana street, which is just a block away. police and fire really couldn't tend to the onlookers and the media because they were so engrossed and so busy with what was going on at the fire scene. at least six ladder trucks, probably more because we ehave a vantage point from the back of the building. at least six ladder trucks were pouring water from the outside in. this clearly went to an outside attack. firefighters initially were inside. we understand they found someone in the warehouse who was severely injured.
4:03 am
transported to a local hospital with 80%, with burns to at least 80% of that person's body. i just talked to a spokesperson with the fire department. the commissioner is on scene. he's going to do a press conference in a short time at the corner of york and american street. so, we have another crew over there. fortunately, no firefighters were injured in this, which is pretty amazing because when we pulled up the smoke or, like i said, the smoke was so eintense, but the heat was so intense. a block away. we could feel it, it was stinging on our faces and even sitting in the live truck at one point, i could feel it through the vehicle. so, salvation army just arrived here. they're here to assist and aid firefighters. they said dozens, if not hundreds of firefighters responded from throughout philadelphia. it was up to a four alarm fire pretty quickly. we are still gathering new information and details and we'll have an update for you in just a few minutes. chris sph. >> katy, real quick, as the camera panned around, there is a
4:04 am
playground nearby. can you give a lay of the land there, the neighborhood around this warehouse. is this an industrial area but, obviously, homes there, too. what is this area like? >> it's a mix of homes and industrial. there is, you can see several bystanders right near the police tape watching everything. there is a playground here. you know, it looks to be adjacent to a school. that would require me to walk two blocks away from the scene and, quite frankly, i was sitting tight here at this corner because i was getting information from police and fire at this corner. but it looks to be, like you said, you know, industrial and residential. we know that, of course, because many people have come up to the police tape. they tell me they live around here and they didn't smell the smoke so much, but they heard the commotion. they were woken up to fire, sirens and police sirens and just a lot of lights because this was very bright. we could see it from our city cameras. you know, several, at least half a mile, if not a mile away, if not more. so, a lot of people out here and
4:05 am
i will find out if there is a school nearby because this, even though firefighters are getting a really strong handle on it, i don't want to say they have it under control. we don't know that. we only have the vantage point from the back of the building, but this is no doubt going to be a very long mop up effort, an investigation into how this fire started. so, a lot of questions still remain, chris. >> katy zachary live on the scene there for us. obviously, this is a large area affected by this. your morning commute is going to be affected if you're going to be hitting the roads. let's get a look at christine maddela with how that is affecting traffic in west kensington. christine? >> you hear katy talk about she's a block away from where the fire crews are. american street and york street, that's where that fire is and that is all blocked off and several other blocks all around this fire blocked off. so, if you need to travel in around that area, front street
4:06 am
or fifth street is your best option. but, you know, that's really, fire crews want you to stay away from this. police tape and they are blocked off and fire crews here, so even as the fire crews are working on this fire, not only are streets closed, but there is going to be limited visibility in this area, as well e. so, as you navigate through west kensington. you want to avoid this area and get fire crews in and out of here and because of that limited visibility. i will keep an eye on this along with our other crews and once sky force 10 gets over the scene, we'll see from the air exactly ewhere everything is blocked off around this. but avoid this area, if you can. we have complete team coverage to bring you the details of this fire in west kensington. brittney? >> one thing i wanted to check was our wind speeds in that particular area. breezy conditions, but good thing it's not windy.

4:15 am
katy zachary is live on the scene for us covering the latest and, katy, give us an idea of what the situation is like there now. >> chris, we are a block away from this massive warehouse fire that broke out around 2:00 this morning. when we got on scene a short time later, it had spread at least another block. so what you're looking at is a warehouse. we believe it's a commercial storage warehouse. we don't know eif it's filled o vacant at this time. we're trying to contact the owner of the building. the fire had spread from cumberland and north american street all the way back to the building and it had even caught several adjacent buildings on fire. there were at least six ladder trucks pouring water on this fire when we pulled up. the flames just reached multiple stories, well beyond this two-story building. they were soring so high. the heat was so intense. fire and police, there were dozens of them on the scene.
4:16 am
several roads were blocked off and, quite frankly, we could get pretty close to the scene because fire and police were so busy with attacking this fire and making sure people were not injured. we do know that one person was injured, taken to a nearby hospital with burns to 80% of that person's body. we don't know who, if it was a man or a woman or if he or she were in the building or out. fortunately no injuries and firefighters at this time and philadelphia water department is on scene. the power company is out here because there was a transformer explosion that we saw. it happened just a half a block away from us. the salvation army is out here. sky force 10 is above the scene right now and you're getting an aerial view of what this firefighting effort looks like. they have gotten a tremendous handle on this issue. fortunately the smoke is white in color from what i can see, that means the bulk of the fire has been put out. but we still so some light, some
4:17 am
flames coming from inside the building. jesse gary is in sky force 10 and give you a better vantage point of that. here on the ground in the west kensington neighborhood. it's a mix. some industrial lots, but it's really residential and it's commercial. so, you had at the height of it a lot of people who were out on their street corner watching this fire, taking pictures. many of them told me they had never seen anything like this before or been close to anything. of course, they could feel the intense heat of the fire standing even several blocks away. so, that's the latest live out here on the 2400 block, just a block away from where this warehouse fire erupted and crews are still, very clearly, battling this fire even though they do have a pretty good handle on this. chris? there is an elementary school nearby. let's get a better lay of the land now from sky force 10 flying above the scene. jesse gary on board.
4:18 am
jesse, tell us what it looks like from up there. >> chris, heavy smoke and fire billowing, continuing to billow from this warehouse fire in west kensington. the smoke is drifting towards south philadelphia. matter of fact on our way up here from chester, you could smell the smoke when you got around this navy ship yard. the old navy ship yard. a lot of smoke in the air and it is drifting south of straight down the city towards south philadelphia. you can see the many crews, fire crews that are trying to apply water and as katy said the intense heat to knock out the flames any time soon. we'll continue to stay above the scene and give you a better idea of what it looks like from here and have another update for you in a couple minutes. live in sky force 10 over kensington, jesse gary. we're also monitoring how this is affecting traffic in that area. christine maddela in with a look
4:19 am
at the impact on the roads of that fire. >> we can see the smoke still on some of oour penndot cameras. when we turned it around, you can see all the smoke here still billowing and like katy said, not as thick and black as it was earlier, but it is lightening up. you can see all that smoke right now and just an impact, just a testament to the impact of this fire. now, this fire is around american street and york street. so, of course, that intersection is shut down. more than that, several blocks around it. because there are so many fire crews and police crews monitoring that scene, there are several blocks around this fire that are blocked off to traffic. if you have to travel in the west kensington area, you'll want to stick to front street or fifth street but fire crews want everyone to stay out and stay away so they can get their job done, even though they're making
4:20 am
headway with this, they still want you to keep out of this area, if possible. if you have to travel at this hour, front street or fifth street is the way to go. chris? if good morning, as we head into the rest of your friday, another cool start. we'll see a mix of sun and clouds pushing into your friday, but it's a lot cooler than what we saw yesterday. although we are tracking warmer conditions as we head into the weekend. we are also tracking the chance of weekend showers. i'll let you know which day. for philadelphia, we're at 59 degrees right now. humidity is at 59% and wind speeds out of the north at 8 miles per hour and the wind speeds due to the fire that's burning in west kensington. at least we're not seeing intense wind speeds right now. basically light at 8 miles per hour in the philadelphia area. so, we could see wind gusts closer to 12 miles per hour. that should help firefighters, at least. right now we're at 46 degrees in the poconos and 51 in allentown
4:21 am
and 51 degrees in pottstown and in the mid-50s starting out in dover. our average for this time of year continues to go down as we continue to wind down the final days of summer. so, 77 degrees is our average. today we're only going to make it to 71. and as we head into saturday, you are going to notice the warming trend will push right back to 77 degrees. but the reason why we're cooling down. high pressure well off to the northeast of us. a lot of times with high pressure, all the time, a clockwise rotation spinning cooler air right into philadelphia. our wind direction will switch out of the east as we head into the rest of today. our future weather shows a few passing clouds on saturday, but most of our changes are going to get here as we head into sunday and it's mainly as we push into sunday evening. so, the phillies' game should still be on the safe side. this line of thunderstorms will not reach us until we head closer to 10:00 p.m. for parts of philadelphia stretching into allentown. could see heavy downpours with this and a chance of isolated
4:22 am
showers. summer is officially coming to an end and fall starts on monday. monday night at 10:29, the sun directly over the equator and 12 hours of daylight and 12 hours of nighttime as we head into your monday evening. for today, temperatures will range between 69 as our daytime high and 72. a mix of sun and clouds and cooler than what we saw yesterday easterly wind at 10 miles per hour and coming up i'll have your seven-day forecast and help you plan around the showers in just a bit. and at 4:22, we continue to follow breaking news on this warehouse fire in west kensington. you can see it's under control now. five or six ladder trucks continue to put water on it. a lot of white smoke, the fire that was just raging about an hour ago is now under control. several homes nearby were evacuated because of concern that it could spread. aadjacent buildings, we're told, did burn. no idea what buildings are at this time. if this is the business we believe it is, a commercial warehouse that leases space for
4:23 am
various commercial purposes. so, no exact idea what was inside that warehouse. but whatever it is, it burned intensitily and it's gone now. the warehouse leveled one or two injuries were reported in the beginning of this fire. we're checking on that. we'll have a live report. we're expecting word from the fire commissioner moments ahead and stay with us as we're covering this breaking news in philadelphia.
