high school for a football game. and baby makes four? social media above the speculation jay-z may have announced baby number two. we'll let you be the judge. today sunday, september 14, 2014. and welcome to "today" on this sunday morning. i'm erica hill. >> i'm lester hold along side jenna and dylan dreyer. a video surface add late yesterday afternoon, word that isis militants have beheaded another hostage. this time it's british aid worker david haynes. his murderer comes weeks after the isis extremist killed two americans.

our chief foreign correspondent is in iraq with more on this. good morning. >> reporter: good morning lester. unfortunately the british government said the video does appear to be genuine. isis now threaten ens to execu another hostage next. >> it appears to be the same executioner in the propaganda video, same british accent. the hostage in the same guantanamo style jump suit. this time he's a british aid worker named david haynes, kidnapped in syria. the beheading was rekreng for david cameron's decision to arm against militants who call themselves islamic state. cameron calls it pure evil. >> we'll hunt them down and bring them to justice no matter how long it takes. >> the obama administration says the u.s. is at war with isis.

in a statement, the president said u.s. will build a coalition to fight isis and condemn the murderer. our hearts go out to the family of mr. haynes and people of united kingdom. isis seems to be goating the world into a fight. >> what makes isis more dangerous than al qaeda is access to western operatives, large number of western recruits and the fact it has an ungoverned space now inside syria and iraq. >> isis has declared war on the world's powers. so far, that has only increased its reach and fame. >> reporter: the british prime minister said isis militants are not muslims but monsters. lester? >> richard, do you get a sense iraqis feel safer now that the u.s. is stepping up efforts, bombing against isis militants?

>> reporter: they certainly feel safer here in irbil. in baghdad, the march that the militants were on earlier this summer heading toward the iraqi capital has been stopped. we're at a stalemate now. the iraqi government hasn't been able to find footing again. it's not really on the offensive. even kurdish fighters where we are are not pushing out and taking much territory. in many places isis advance has been stopped or slowed down, but the fundamental tide of the battle hasn't been shifted. >> richard in iraq for us, thank you. for more, here's erica. >> thanks. chuck todd is with us this morning. >> nice to see you this morning. thank you. >> britain saying it will work with u.s. to support direct military action and emphasizing this wouldn't be about british troops on the ground. there's been a lot of question

about how this coalition will work moving forward. how does this latest development affect the support for the coalition? >> it's interesting to see what brits end up doing. obviously they have the same issues americans do when it comes to combat groups on the ground. iraq war fatigue is the same if not more so in the united kingdom. they've been hesitant to make the commitment of combat troops in the same way president obama has been reluctant to commit u.s. combat troops. this continues to raise the stakes. what countries will do this? nobody has said you can defeat isis without combat troops. there has to be somebody on the ground. the iraqi army is one thing in iraq. the president is proposing training to so called moderate opposition. this is moderate opposition a month ago in an interview the president was skeptical would be able to be filled if you got rid

of isis. secretary kerry hasn't got confirmation in the middle east to be a fighting force on the ground. >> one of the countries talked about is turkey. this has been a difficult relationship with the u.s. is this a coalition that could potentially work without the support of turkey? >> no. it doesn't work without turkey. that's the t bottom line. they're the strongest military in the middle east now. you need turkey. turkey is in a precarrious situation. richard angle has been reporting he thinks this is not necessarily a message to americans or brits but to turkey. there's a lot of hostages held from turkey by isis. they don't want to have those folks in harm's way. i think that's making it hard for turkey to commit. there are people in turkey that

say they want to be a part of this. it just can't be known that they're a part of this. so that -- you see how tricky this diplomacy really is. >> nice to have you with us this morning. we'll check with you later. thanks. >> all right. >> lester? >> all right erica. thanks. firefighters in the west are fact tough conditions today on what could be a historic heat wave. they firefighters are battling wildfires. halle jackson is near one of the fires in orange county, california. good morning. >> reporter: good morning lester. firefighters here have managed to prevent homes from burning near this silverado fire. today's record breaking heat could be a wildcard. as flames scale the canyon, people that live nearby rushed to get out.

>> flames were outside when we looked. i said grab a bag, valuables and whatever and run. >> more than 200 homes inside the evacuation zone with firefighters working from the air and ground. but the steep, rugged terrain is making access tricky. with temperatures soaring into the triple digits, southern california's heat wave adds a dangerous element to this 1600 acre fire futh. >> just working conditions. when hiking hills in 100 plus degrees the, it makes our job that much more difficult. >> the fire is one of more than 50 in the west including two new fires in northern california that flared up in the last 48 hours triggering evacuations. fires have torched 2.8 million acreses, an area half the size of new jersey. back in southern california, crews are bracing for yet another blistering day. >> just battling the elements

and take care of your body. it's 10 degrees out here. got to stay hydrated, eat well and look after each other. >> reporter: and firefighters here are making sure to drink plenty of water and take plenty of breaks lester. with fire season in california in full swing, it could be weeks before they get a real rest. >> thank you. >> dylan is tracking that heat out west and also the big cold snap moving east. she's got more on that for us. >> good morning erica. we're looking at the high pressure causing the ridge in the jet stream. we have the dry wind coming from the northeast. it's not crossing water so it's a dry wind that creates extreme heat. we're going to see again today most likely record breaking temperatures. we broke records the interior parts of california yesterday. that continues to keep the fire danger in full effect. it's hot, dry, excessive heat warnings and advisories across parts of southern california.

temperatures today will again be in the triple digits in river side. 12 degrees above average. not going to get releaf tomorrow. interior areas especially away from the immediate coast, we are going to see highs tomorrow again about 10 to 15 above average. la should top out around 93 degrees. on the flip side of, that we have very chilly temperatures below average starting off the day in the 40s across the great lakes and new york 48 now. high temperatures will stay about 10 to 15 below average. we're only going to top out in the 60s and 70s. burlington should be around 59 degrees today. it's certainly going to be on the chilly side. lester? >> dylan, thanks. football fans nationwide are headed to nfl stadiums to cheer on their teams after what has been a tough week for the league. two star running back side lined amid accusations of abusing family members and the pro football commissioner under fire from all sides. peter alexander is in washington

with the team to host the game later today. good morning. >> reporter: lester, good ma morning. one women's advocacy group is flying banner planes above four stadiums from san francisco to new york cleveland and indianapolis with the simple message directed at the nfl commissioner roger guidel. they'll read guidel must go. >> players and fans will return to stadiums nationwide after one of the nfl's worst weeks ever. the sports video criticism of the commissioner and another mug shot, one of the league's biggest stars this time. even though his face is on today's ticket, running back adrian peterson will miss the game, benched by the team after he was charged with injury to a child, reckless and neglect. he hasn't commented since he was disciplined for disciplining his son way wooden tree branch.

jersey are involved looking for whoever deliberately targeted the troopers in what pennsylvania's.g governor callsn attack on civilized society. >> for troopers stopping car after car on this roadway, it's personal. two of their fellow officers gunned down in the ambush friday night right at their police barracks. >> one thing i can say, this is unbelievably heart breaking to all of us. both of them were young troopers with families. >> corporal bryon was killed. trooper alex douglas was injured and rushed 20 surgery. police immediately fanned out into the dense woods nearby. several roads and a major highway were shut down. >> we saw a lot of state police. there were ambulances. >> from the air, choppers scanned any sign of a suspect or suspects. >> we're going to use every possible technique and piece of equipment we have until we have

this person in custody. >> there are still few details of the a attack. police from neighboring states are expanding the search, all on high alert as are those that live nearby. >> we're all sort of on pins and needles. >> i understand many member of the community are concerned. i wish i could lessen their concern, but we have a very dangerous, armed criminal. >> in the rural northeast pennsylvania town, people are also united in their sympathy. at this restaurant, gregory is feeding troopers who have been working non stop since friday. >> if we can do anything to help them, this is what we do. it's a small town. we're here to help any way we can. >> a community coming to grips with its loss even as the search for a killer can continues. >> our prayers go out to the officers, their families, the barracks, the whole local area. >> now police won't say if this was a lone gunman.

we are hearing more this morning from the wives of former nfl players. jenna sat down with them several days ago for a candid and open conversation about what it's like to be married to a professional football player. jenna? >> the ray rice incident with his wife sparked national conversation and raised disturbing questions. we met with four women who were married to former nfl players. these women understand the culture, the commitment and believe it or not, they understand how ray rice and his wife janay are still together. >> when you see a ray dragging janay out of the elevator, was there any question about what happened? >> devastation was the first thing that i felt when i saw this video because i know what kind of people they are. >> for the video to have not

been watched when first offered, i think is shameful. >> i absolutely think the baltimore ravens dropped the ball on this. >> i've spoken with janay many times on many occasions. like any friend, i just want her to know i'm there and going to stand beside her. >> nfl will go on, but these two people are in a crisis situation. they're traumatized. i think that sometimes people have a tendency to dehumanize athletes. they feel like the media and else else has wanted to attack them off the bat instead of help. >> for number of women being battered, you don't hear about it. you're not going to hear about it in nfl homes either. >> as women, escape willy wives of professional athletes, you take on a supportive role. it kind of comes with the deal. your job is to be there to support them, hold the family
