sleep at night knowing that that person is not still out there. >> reporter: just after 11:00, the foreman read the verdict. aggravated assault, guilty. involuntary deviant sexual intercourse with a child involving serious bodily injury, guilty. kidnapping, guilty. three more charges, guilty, guilty, guilty. >> the jury has determined beyond any reasonable doubt that she and she alone did this and that there's no one out there waiting to hurt them. >> reporter: regusters' defense attorney says she never told him what role she played but he thinks regusters is the woman who helped the victim escape by dropping her off at this park the morning after her kidnapping and sexual assault. >> i think this is a diabolical plan. i didn't think she had the capability of coming up with a scheme like this. >> reporter: today the judge ordered regusters undergo a mental health evaluation. that is not uncommon in cases like this. her sentencing is scheduled for december.

regusters could get up to life in prison. that's what the district attorney said they are going to pursue. live outside the criminal justice center, christine maddela, nbc 10 news. >> coverage of the story continues at 4:00. live legal perspective on the case from a local attorney. his insight about the jury's decision. all new at 4:45. sky force 10 over the scene of a construction collapse in philadelphia he's queen village neighborhood. this is on monroe street. we're told two workers fell through the scaffolding here. one is okay. the other was taken to the hospital, is expected to survive. here is the view from our crew on the ground now. we have learned the three-story row home was in the process of being demolished when part of a concrete wall fell on the scaffolding. both workers are now doing okay. >> one was pulled from the location. he was transported to jefferson hospital. he has small lacerations to the head. he's in stable condition. the second male was pulled from the location.

he was treated on scene, refused additional medical treatment. >> the department of licenses and inspects tells nbc 10 the site was inspected yesterday and there were no safety issues found. the childhood virus that's making kids all across the country sick may have arrived in our area. >> a dozen kids in delaware now being treated. while federal agents investigate if it's the virus, concern is understandably growing. tim furlong live this afternoon in wilmington. >> how soon should we know if this virus is making these delaware kids sick? >> reporter: i have my phone with me right now waiting to hear from delaware department of public health. it isn't clear if the cdc test results will be back today. we will pass them along to you. this enterovirus is very common at this time of the year as kids go back to school. but this strain, that's the one that is hitting harder than normal. let's cut right to the chase. should moms and dads be nervous

about this right now? >> i don't want people to panic about this. >> reporter: enterovirus is common. but this strain, this is not so common. while there are 12 delaware kids here at the hospital with respiratory problems, some in intensive care, the cdc hasn't confirmed they have the specific enterovirus 68. it sure looks like the symptoms. delaware's department of pub lib health says this doesn't stop at state lines. where you are watching us tonight, watch out. >> enteroviruses, there are more than 100 kinds, are coming to your school. they're coming to your childcare. they are already there. >> reporter: this doesn't mean we parents should lose our cool. you should take precautions and talk with your kids. m moms whose kids have as ma, being on higher alert. >> we have them wash their hands a lot. we are careful. we don't take them out when they are sick. >> reporter: here at the hospital, they have segregated

part of the emergency department. if your kid comes in with respiratory concerns, they go to one side. any other sprain or other injury, they go to the other side. coming up at 5:00, we will keep checking on the information from the delaware department of public health. we will ask the experts, how do you know when it's time to get your kid to the e.r.? a lot of us have that question. are they -- call the doctor time or go to the e.r. time? we will talk about that at 5:00, live in wilmington, tim furlong, nbc 10 news. >> these are the symptoms of the virus. emergency responders at a 9/11 sermony had to rescue two people from the ocean. members of the fire department beach patrol and coast guard were leading the ceremony last

night when they got a call about two people in trouble. bystanders told the coast guard a woman was swimming and needed help. a man went in to try and rescue her. responders pulled both to safety. isn't this a nice way to end the workweek? nbc in norristown, with a lot of sun. less humid than the last couple of days. you could feel the difference out there today. >> that's for sure. what do we expect tonight? meteorologist glenn "hurricane" schwartz has the answer for us. >> i will tell you, it's going to be a beautiful evening. starting off that way. very blue sky again. unusual for summertime. but we have seen a lot of cases like this this season. at the shore, the poconos, everywhere in between, citizens bank park, great conditions for baseball coming up again tonight. you can see there's hardly a

cloud in the sky anywhere nearby. it's going to be dry tonight. but there's moisture down to the south. some of that is going to be coming back. not this evening though. 77 now in philadelphia. 78 in northeast philly. it's in the 70s at the shore as well. as we go through the evening, it's going to be a beautiful one. nice and comfort, too. low humidity. clear skies. things are going to change dramatically by tomorrow. there is rain on the way. i will have the timing of that hour by hour with the seven-day forecast coming up in a few minutes. >> thanks. a philadelphia neighborhood is bracing for a braft. in a matter of hours, this high-rise will come down. it's going to be imploded. >> the building is owned by the philadelphia housing authority along the 300 block of queen lane in germantown. it is coming down to make way for new housing. the nbc 10 countdown clock on

your screen. the final hours left for this building. it will be imploded in just over 15 hours. doug shimell is live near the building. >> this operation is proving to be an inconvenience for neighbors who will be in the so-called dust zone once that high-rise falls? >> reporter: exactly. not only the dust zone, which is the ring around the blast site, but the evacuation zone which can divide blocks in half like the far block of alfred and streets around the implosion site. this man is sealing any place that dust can get through before he leaves. and anything that could be shaken off the walls during the blast has to come down. >> took pictures to make sure that once we are allowed to come back and they have cleared the block and we're allowed to come back that everything that was intact before is still intact. >> reporter: it's in advance of the saturday 7:15 a.m. implosion

of the 59-year-old queen lane apartments in germantown. in past implosions, there's the shock waves and rolling walls of dust that mandate an immediate one-block evacuation zone and the dust zone beyond that. the philadelphia housing authority says this is the 23rd implosion in more than ten years. >> a lot of the neighborhoods are similar to these where the properties sit directly adjacent or across the street from the high-rises. >> reporter: many in the zone have heard assurances. >> i'm hoping and praying that nothing happens to the property and everything goes along smoothly. >> what are they willing to do for houses damaged in the implosion and the cleanup process? >> if there's damage, they should document it, take photos. we don't expect that there will be any damage. >> reporter: they will know for sure by tomorrow afternoon. >> i'm going to stay with my daughter. i will be back tomorrow night

if you recognize this chevy suburban, call please. a man convicted of attacking a professor is going to spend the next 17 to 35 years behind bars. prosecutors say 45-year-old darryl moon punched and robbed an 81-year-old professor inside a building on campus in october of last year. the professor was treated for bleeding and swelling in his brain. police say they identified moon using surveillance cameras. a 14-year-old is charged with dealing heroin. they watched the teen make several drug transactions in the co colonial circle area. he threw a plastic bag on the ground that had 25 smaller baggies of heroin inside. he is being held at a detention center. to new information on the struggling taj mahal casino in atlantic city.

3,100 can 0 3,100 employees will get warn notices. they are required by law to give at least 60 days notice of a company shutdown or a large-scale layoff. they filed for bankruptcy tuesday and threatened to close if it doesn't get concessions from its unions. it could close in november. the trump plaza is scheduled to close tuesday. the atlantic club, showboat and revel have closed. the taj mahal would be the fifth of atlantic city's 12 casinos to close this year. a florida developer offered to buy revel at a bankruptcy auction. new numbers show the casino revenue declined by 1.2% in august. the 11 casinos operating in august went down 4 million from last year. internet gambling brought in 10.5, that's up from a month earlier. penn state has pulled gideon

bibles from rooms of two hotels it runs. it will make them available on request. a spokesman for the university says the school made the move to recognize guests' owe religions. it's located in the library of the hotels. happening now, a massive rally outside pennsylvania governor tom corbett's philadelphia office. members of the philadelphia coalition advocating for public schools, they are joined by faith leaders and state senator vincent hughs. live pictures from center city. they are protesting what they call corbett's failure to fund philadelphia schools. the president of the national education association was in camden today. she visited pine point middle school. she met with staff, visited classrooms and heard from the students. the school is part of new jersey education association's priority schools initiative. >> rewith talking to the public

school teachers. what impresses me is their passion. they love these kids. they are excited. it's like christmas, it's back to school. and yet they are worried. they are worried they might not have the resources. >> the priority school's initiative is designed to bring educators, community members and others together to address challenges faced by many public schools in our state. happening right now, hillary clinton is making a public appearance in the big apple. she's attending a fund-raiser for the democratic governor's association. expect to see more of clinton over the next few days. that's because she is returning to iowa this weekend for the first time since her third-place finish in the 2008 caucuses. as she prepares to take part in another fund-raiser, a new poll shows her popularity rating has suffered. 43% view her positively while 41 rate her negatively.

that's down from a 51% fav favorability rating a year ago. chris christie is in florida. he helped florida governor rick scott campaign at a restaurant in panama city today. then they attended a rally south of tallahassee. part of a two-week bus tour for scott. this is the third time christie campaigned with him in tampa in may. a south carolina father who police say killed his five young children waved his right to appear in court today. >> he put their bodies in garbage bags and dumped them in a wooded area of balance balance. jay gray has the latest. ♪ >> reporter: a grieving family gathered this afternoon. to remember five young lives lost. brothers and sisters that police say were killed by their father.

>> loved going to the park. they loved swimming. they loved chocolate cookies. >> reporter: their short lives were celebrated in rural mississippi. nearly 500 miles away in a south carolina courtroom, 32-year-old timothy ray jones, junior, chose not to stand before a judge during his first hearing in the case. >> he wishes to wave his appearance to appear today. he has been served with a copy of the warrant. >> reporter: they say he murdered his five young children last week. >> he traveled to south carolina, georgia and north carolina and then into mississippi. >> reporter: where officers say he was acting strange during a routine stop at a vehicle inspection checkpoint. >> they saw blood. they saw children's clothes but no children.

they placed him under arrest. >> reporter: next investigators said he led them to this remote bam balance hilltop where the kids' bodies were found. jones has said little else to police. >> he has not indicated why he did this, no. >> reporter: as the investigation into how and why this tragedy happened continues. jay gray, nbc 10 news. 20 minutes of nonstop news continues with the final verdict in the oscar pistorius trial. >> a judge ended speculation for a packed courtroom and people watching all over the world about whether he intentionally killed his girlfriend. >> the accused is found not guilty and is discharged. instead, he is found guilty of culpable homicide. >> it was a major victory for the defense and a massive blow to the prosecutoprosecutor. the judge virtually ripped apart the state's case.

she believes oscar thought there was an intruder and went further saying pistorius didn't act like a murderer. after the verdict the judge allowed pistorius to walk out of the courtroom. his bail extended. he didn't say a word as he pushed through a crush of cameras. pretty nice way to end the week. look at that sky and the skyline. a fantastic friday. it is not going to be like this tomorrow. there's no way. we have some rain during the day on saturday. not just a couple showers either. a cool pattern overall. you will see it in the seven-day forecast. every one of the seven days has below average temperatures. right now even with the sunshine, it's 77 degrees. a little bit below average. seven degrees below where it was at this time yesterday. the feels-like temperature is only 78 degrees. we have been into the 80s today.

dropping down perhaps not even reaching 70 tomorrow because of the clouds, the rain and the wind off the ocean. 77 in blue bell. 76 in doylestown. 73 in allentown. 75 in wilmington. and washington township, wrightstown, fairly similar temperatures across the area. a little cooler at the beaches where the wind is coming off the ocean. today, for going to the beach, that's sunday, not saturday. look at this. we have below average temperatures, but nothing like what they have in the great lakes and back in the plains states and back in the rockies. 20 inches in the mountains of montana. this is a huge cool air mass. and a piece of that is coming this way over the next week. compared to other parts of the country, we're not all that cool. there is a good bit of moisture to the south with the front that came through last night. it's going to come right back.

but, of course, not tonight. it's going to take a little while. so tomorrow the best chance of being dry is the earlier in the day you can get stuff done. 7:00 a.m. it looks pretty dry. by 10:00 a.m., we're starting to see a little bit of moisture pop up. by noon, more showers around. look what happens as we go to 2:00, more and more. each hour the chances of rain in your spot goes up and the chances of it being more than just light goes up. but it will be moving out perhaps during the evening hours. and that is going to set us up for some beautiful weather on sunday. but the miss america parade, atlantic city, looks kind of cool and rainy between 5:00 and 7:00. not exactly great timing for the weather there. nice and comfortable tonight. clouds coming in late.

for themselves as well as their newborn. >> with the moms from their pregnancy until the baby is 2. just to see the growth and seeing them early on in their pregnancy and the challenges they face with their family, school, lack of money. we're able to teach them that it's healthier and have time with their babies. >> critical years. delaware has historically had one of the highest infant mortality rates in the nation. they may be pretty in pink, but they come with a powerful message and a mission. >> today kicks off the susan g. komen three-day in montgomery county. nbc 10 was there for the first few steps that were taken as this walk began today in montgomery county. they got a long journey ahead of them. participants will walk 60 miles through the philadelphia area, finishing up with a ceremony at the navy yard on sunday afternoon.

right now at 4:30, they are all smiles in atlantic city right now. the resort town hosting miss america festivities. the tradition is this weekend. it's good for business in a city that has been suffering from a dieing casino industry. >> then comes monday and more uncertainty for the city. cydney long is live this afternoon in atlantic city.

>> you have been talking to business owners and visitors about fears of a big business drop-off at the start of next week? >> reporter: that's right. we talked to everyone from taxi drivers to restaurant owners today. clearly, there are some people who are very concerned about a decline in revenue or a dropoff in business. but the folks who know atlantic city say there will be mrepty to draw crowds this fall and in part due to a boost from the miss america excitement. >> i'm 12 and i'm natalie. >> reporter: her first time in atlantic city from orlando plans to soak in all things miss america this weekend. they will be among a crowd of 150,000 who line the atlantic city boardwalk saturday night for show me your shoes parade. >> it's a bigger draw than in past years because you miss something a little bit more when it's not here. >> reporter: this man with the atlantic city alliance says the social media advertising of the

pageant weekend by the young contestants will serve as a boost for tourism this fall. >> they walk around with their books. they are in our hotels, shopping, dining, eating. most have not been to atlantic city before. >> reporter: with 8,000 employees now or soon to be out of work with the casino closures, businesses, including taxi driver francisco hernandez says crowds are falling off. >> i work in the airport. two flights in the morning. two in the afternoon. >> reporter: you are feeling it in. >> yeah. >> reporter: you haven't been as busy? >> maybe this week is a lot of business. next week we don't have any. >> reporter: has it had any impact on you? >> not just yet. >> reporter: are you nervous that it will? >> yeah. i'm a little nervous that this winter is going to be very slow. >> reporter: for 12-year-old natalie, you will come back to atlantic city when it's your turn for miss america?

>> yes, i will. >> reporter: really depends on who you talk to. the casino reinvestment development authority estimates the festivities will rake in $30 million for the res sdort over a two-week time frame. as far as vacancy, here in atlantic city there are 20,000 rooms total. clearly some less with the casino closures. with the summer-like temperatures the weekend rooms could sell out fast. live in atlantic city, i'm cydney long, nbc 10 news. here are some of the other stories making headlines. guilty open all counts. that was the verdict today in the christina regusters kidnapping and sex assault trial. jurors convicted her of all six charges. regusters was accused of taking a 5-year-old girl out of her west philadelphia elementary school, sexually abusing her and abandoning her in upper darby. half a dozen children in delaware are in intensive care right now with breathing problems. doctors want to know if it's

enterovirus 68. it quickly becomes serious. the illness is making children across the country sick, especially in the midwest. lab tests are being done to see if the local cases are in fact enterovirus. in hours, a high-rise philadelphia apartment building will be coming down. the 16-story queen lane apartments in germantown set to be imploded early tomorrow morning. neighbors have been forced to prepare for the event or a possible evacuation. nbc 10 ready to kick off another exciting week of high school football highlights. our showcase game of the week is one that got more than 20,000 viewer votes.

guilty on all counts. a philadelphia jury convicted a 21-year-old woman for kidnapping and sexually abusing a little girl. it's a high-profile emotionally charged case that we have been following since it happened more than a year and a half ago. >> 21-year-old christina regusters will undergo a mental evaluation before she's sentenced in december. nbc 10 legal analyst joins us live from our digital operations center. >> thanks for being with us. now that she has been convicted on all counts, what kind of sentence is she facing? >> she's looking at a life sentence at this point. remember, she was originally offered 40 to 80 years. there will be an investigation. there will be a psychological

evaluation. the one charge alone involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, that can carry life in prison alone. if you put it together, felony one first degree charges, she could look at upwards of 120 years. >> do you think it was a mistake she didn't testify? >> in this case, the defense attorney had an opportunity to see her testify. she testified at the suppression case. the defense attorney was able to witness her testimony. defense said that her testimony didn't come off too well. there's the instruction to the jury that her right to remain silent cannot be used and held against her. in the end, when she goes to testify, she then opens herself up to the cross examination. she also anything possibly from her past that could be used against her. in the end, it becomes a strategic decision. in this case it ended up being all guilty anyway. >> hard to second guess the defense attorney there. how does the guilty verdict now affect the civil lawsuit that the victim's family has filed?

>> obviously, the civil lawsuit will be against the school district. i doubt the defendant has any assets that the family would go after. you also heard the district attorney in the closing statement say that the school district was reckless. this person being convicted at this point can be used in the civil suit to say it was reckless and led the victim being abused and the defendant being convicted. >> as always, thanks for your perspecti perspective. >> thank you. great end to the week. but the weekend is not going to be like this. certainly not the whole weekend. nice night for baseball. tomorrow night, maybe a different story. fantastic friday across the entire area. we do have rain coming in on saturday, just about everything will see at least some rain. the cool pattern, everybody will

the earlier you go out tomorrow, the better chance you have of staying dry. 7:00 a.m., most of us are dry. 11:00 a.m., a few more. we can't just say afternoon rain. although, it's predominantly during the afternoon. look at noontime, how it increases north and west. then these two areas come together by early afternoon and some of it gets a little heavier. 2:00, 3:00, 4:00, 5:00, that's when we are pretty much at the peak. then it starts to move out. we may be seeing improving conditions saturday night leading us to beautiful weather on sunday. here is saturday night, the last of the rain. sunday nice and dry. hardly a cloud in the sky. it's going to be a lot like today only a little bit cooler. in the tropics, well there's a tropical storm. however, it is going to be another fish storm as we call it. it's even going to track east of

it was one year ago today that nbc 10 brought you images as breaking news right here. flames devouring part of the boardwalk. dozens of businesses were destroyed in the fire. >> investigators say that wiring, damage from super storm sandy was to blame for that. ted greenberg covered the fire as it happened a year ago. >> you went back to the community today to see the progress they have made since the fire. what have you found?

>> reporter: there is a boardwalk again here. but very few of the burned out businesses have returned. for those that did come back, things are still not the way they were. the sweets are the same, but for this man the past 12 months are still tough to digest. >> it's surreal. >> reporter: his candy shot is in this temporary building. it's a replacement for the store destroyed with more than 50 other boardwalk businesses in this wind swept inferno one year ago today. >> it was mayhem. >> reporter: a blaze along four blocks blamed on wires corroded by super storm sandy the previous year. >> we had no idea whether they will rebuild or not. it's up in the air. >> reporter: the boardwalk has since been replaced. but a couple blocks remain virtually void of merchants.

>> it's sad. >> i thought they would be further along by now. >> reporter: the rebuilding process has been slowed by a combination of issues including the fact that this part of the boardwalk is privately owned. >> that's the problem when you have private ownership. you have different opinions. they have a right to have their say. >> reporter: only a handful of businesses returned for the summer. their owners believe misperceptions hurt their profits. >> a lot of people weren't informed there's a boardwalk. they all took -- they thought it was burned down, the whole boardwalk. it's a shame. we're here. >> you have to think ahead. i hate thinking of the past. i'm a forward looking person and a survivor. hopefully if they rebuild, we will be back in full force. >> reporter: the temporary buildings have to be removed from the boardwalk by the end of october. the mayor hopes plans for permanent ones will be submitted soon so they can be finished for next summer.

guilty on all counts. that's the verdict in the philadelphia kidnapping case of a little girl after nearly three weeks of sometimes graphic testimony. a jury found christina regusters guilty of taking a 5-year-old from inside a south philadelphia school and then sexually assaulting her. good evening. >> nbc 10 was in the courtroom as that verdict was read. let's bring in christine maddela now. can you describe for us what was the scene like when regusters learned her fate? >> reporter: exactly. 21-year-old christina regusters, she sat quietly and showed no emotion when the jury read the verdict guilty on all counts,

all six charges against her. regusters was stone faced as she got up and was escorted out of the courtroom to be escorted behind bars. now the district attorney wants her to stay there for the rest of her life. >> i hope for her sake that she doesn't remember the brutal details of what happened to her in that bedroom. >> reporter: after the conviction, the prosecution and police gave credit to the little girl who had been kidnapped and brutally assaulted in this case. >> this is a child who was able to provide more detail and more information than most adults. she's an amaze, courageous child. hopefully, this gives her some closure. >> reporter: the 5-year-old who they say bravely helped the investigation by answering questions and retracing her steps. >> when you sit with this child in the early stages, she could barely sit or walk. she had to be carried. we carried her to and from the car. >> reporter: they couldn't have convicted regusters without the girl's help. when the victim said she heard a talking bird.
