7:06 pm
they are fast and furious liars. i doubt that i could keep up. i would never interview mcdaniel as an expert on republican campaigns the way i frequently interview my longtime friend, stuart stevens, who ran her uncle, mitt romney's presidential campaign. viewing as a political analyst, but i do have a few questions for her whenever she might want to come on this program. and i'll make it easy for her. i will tell her the questions ahead of time. my first question would be, why did you change your name for donald trump? before trump ran for president, her name was romney mcdonald. how does that feel? to change her name to curry favor with the madman because he doesn't like your uncle? how did you explain that to your kids?
7:07 pm
what lesson did your kids learn from that? and i mentioned her kids because she always mentions her kids. and that she is a mother, whenever she is speaking publicly. and then i would ask her about everything she did to try to help donald trump overthrow the election that she yesterday decided to say for the very first time three years later that joe biden won fair and square. there is an easy way to avoid the controversy. don't hire anyone close to the -- that is what happened to the nixon guy. only the nixon speechwriters who literally worked at a different building far away from the crimes were

at a time where was very unpopular. it is very important to remember that. there is a line you do not cross. it was repeatedly excoriated by the court. i would just read one passage that gives the audience one flavor. this is the judge to mr. blank. you are literally accusing the attorney's office and the people assigned to this case of engaging in misconduct. and trying to make me, that's the court, complacent and it. and you don't have a single site to support that decision. that is representative of how that went today. defense counsel really was underwhelming, and didn't do the job. you want defense

counsel to be as strong and as good as possible, just like the prosecution. you want them to be as good in the strongest possible. this is really not a good showing for donald trump and his counsel today. and how they handled the matter. >> and it turns out that chronologically in these crimes donald trump has been accused of, this is the very first one he committed. he committed this beginning in 2016 in the final weeks of the presidential campaign. he continued in the oval office, signing some of the hush money payments in the oval office. so we are beginning at the beginning. >> that is exactly right. it is so interesting that this, it is coming the same time as a separate intermediate court of appeals, reducing the amount of the bond that is due.

he has multiple things going on in new york itself, multiple different proceedings. all of these cases, it is like his life is one game of legal fraud, are something. i do think this was the first time that a former president has been indicted criminally. and now it is the first case that is going to go to trial. that is usually significant. other countries have faced south korea, france, brazil. we've got a person here in donald trump who is incapable of staying within the lines of the law for you and me. that is what this trial is about and the other trials. this is a really big deal. he was using michael: to payoff a porn star so that his story

wouldn't come out in the news. that is a serious issue. if it hadn't come out, it may be really would have swayed the election. >> and this one has a certain advantage of simplicity here. paying off the porn star while your presidential campaign is in crisis already. and because of a few things you've said about sexually assaulting women in the final weeks of her presidential campaign. it is also a story that the news media has told before. the idea of paying off a star, and i have to forge off the records of how i'm doing that. it seems to be a pretty simple evidence-based to deliver. >> you do not have to explain to the jury, which i and many others on my team had to explain.
7:19 pm
this is one, as nicolle wallace likes to say. hey, you might want to try and blame other people. but there is only one person who is benefiting from the scheme. and that is donald trump. the idea that people are going to do this and engage in this without donald trump knowing he was the principal beneficiary. it is a pretty far-fetched idea. of course, we had to wait and see. i've been knocking todd blanche. the other attorney that donald trump has, susan necklace. she is a wonderful well- respected defense lawyer. she is somebody who i always want to wait and see. she will have something she is presenting to the jury. you know what the result is going to be. agreeing on paper, this is a clean, clean case.

abstaining. >> in favor of the resolution in document s-2024. please raise their hand. those against? abstention? the result is as follows, 14 votes in favor, zero votes against, one abstention. >> [ applause ] >> it has been adopted.
7:49 pm
>> this is the first time the united states has not vetoed a security council cease-fire resolution. >> today, as you all know, we abstained on a un security council resolution calling for a cease-fire in gaza until the end of ramadan and release of all hostages. our vote does not, i repeat, does not represent a shift in our policy. we've been very clear, we've been very consistent in our support for a cease-fire as part of a hostage deal. that is how the hostage deal was structured, and the resolution acknowledges the ongoing talks. we want to get to a place where we can support this resolution. but because the final text does not have key language that we think is essential, such as condemning hamas, we could and supported. >> as the united states allowed the resolution to pass, israel's prime minister benjamin netanyahu said he will

7:51 pm
we fully support some of the critical objectives in this resolution. and we believe it was important for the council to speak out. >> how big of a departure was this for the united states today? >> i think it is a big departure, lawrence. it is a shot across. it is a way of saying, look, our patient isn't endless. and by the way, his reaction was petulant by not sending folks here. i think it is a prelude to even the consideration of the u.s. making the break with israel. we don't want to make a break with israel. we still want to keep our leverage. this is about as far as we can go. >> peter, we have all for our lifetimes watched the american u.n. ambassador stand for and beside israel in the united nations in moments like these. what was your reaction to what
7:52 pm
we saw today? >> i think the biden administration is tiptoeing towards the kinds of actions that it would generally need to take in order to try to stop the carnage, the destruction of gaza. what it will take will be for the united states to say to israel that we would no longer provide military aid for this war, and would no longer provide diplomatic immunity for israel and in international forms. the by the ministration is not willing to take those steps, i think benjamin netanyahu will continue to defy the united states. we are seeing for the first time, this really is a historic shift. those further steps, the serious use of u.s. leverage is on the table. >> let's listen to what donald trump says about this. >> you have to finish up your war. you have to finish it up. you have to get it done.
7:53 pm
i'm sure you would do that. and we have to get to peace. you can have this going on. and i will say, israel has to be very careful. you are losing a lot of the world, you are losing a lot of support. you have to finish up, get the job done. you have to get on to peace, on to a normal life for israel, and for everybody else. >> richard stengel, finish up, get the job done. how would you expect the israeli government to interpret that? >> well, i think they would interpret it as support for the invasion of rafah, which the administration is very dubious about. i will switch keys for second, lawrence. as you know, i am the co-chair of the board of care, the humanitarian organization. we have been in gaza and the west bank for decades and decades, supplying feed. we've never seen anything like the approach to famine that is happening in gaza now.

and in northern gaza. 83% of the people are suffering from severe malnutrition. the whole point of a cease- fire, even one just to be temporary during the month of ramadan, is to get food into gaza. that is a desperate need. the administration knows that. that is why they abstained on this ruling today. >> peter beinart, the trump position of, you've got to finish up and get the job done. what does that mean to you? >> to me, this is based on a lie, the idea that israel can go in and finish up a job. it sounds familiar to americans, doesn't it? we finished the job when we overthrew the taliban, this is a lie. yes. hamas will no longer be in power. but, israel is going to be there fighting an insurgency for a long, long time. whether it calls itself hamas or something else. as we know, every one of those people in israel -- the 30,000 or more, they will have
