lunar eclipse. the so-called blood moon will have a red color for about an hour or so, erika is live on the sky deck with the special guest to talk to us about this very rare event, erika. >> natasha, this is one of my favorite people in the world derrick pits, chief astronomer from the franklin institute is joining us on the sky deck where we cannot see the the moon because it ties darn light but we want to talk bit. thanks for waking up so early. >> sure. >> thinks called blood moon because it can have an orange red color. >> light stream from the sun comes in toward the earth and the lightings through the earth's atmosphere and dust in the earth's atmosphere helps make the light, the surface of the moon red. if you have a deep eclipse it can be deep red. this eclipse as i saw it just a few minutes ago didn't look quite so deep but it had some color to it. >> i think is there a picture we are looking at from out west in california what are we
6:48 am
seeing happening here. >> what we are seeing is totality portion of the eclipse is just coming on to the moon. we can still see a thin edge of light that is still there. the at the maximum portion of the eclipse that is where moon is deepest in the earth's shadow and when we will get max color but it looks brick red or tannish rather than being a deep blood red. >> we have already missed it here, total eclipse already happened but something needed we have sunrising at the aim time what did that do. >> what is happening here in this particular case the sunrise for us happens at the same time as the the eclipse happens and that makes it more difficult for to us see, it is a really weird word that just means the eclipse is happening for you when the sunnies rising. for thaws means the the moon is low on the western horizon but we can almost, always see the full moon setting as the sunrisees at full moon because that is the definition of how full moon works. >> there have been total lunar
6:49 am
eclipse before and they will happen again but we find it so fascinating what is it that keeps our attention on these. >> eye tea that the the moon is difficulties a appearing from the sky. something that is obscuring it making it dark. we are used to seeing full moon large, bright, welcoming but when it is dark like that it looks more for boding, it is just regular physics of the solar system. >> in case folks missed it when is next time we will see one. >> next april actually, so not too far away. >> you cannot have have chief astronomer and not ask about the recent space walk with the astronauts in the international the space station, what is significance of the walk they are doing right now. >> walks they are doing right now they had to replace a pump ol cooling system that needed to be replaced. they needed to take it from the current location and put it in the storage area where it is much safer. but you what they are doggies preparing them for upcoming deep space missions, returning to the moon, going on to mars and exploring deeper in the solar system. this is practice for all of that and cumulative knowledge

i'm tom wolf. these are my parents. we look after each other. but too many seniors have no one. and harrisburg politicians don't seem to care. as governor, i'll create a registry so families can check backgrounds of care providers. and, i'll increase access to home health care, so seniors have the option of staying in their own homes. after all, seniors have earned that right. we certainly have! tom wolf. democrat for governor.
