palestine will live forever. pro palestinian campus protests continue around the country and here in the bay area. and tonight, demonstrators are refusing to leave stanford university. >> three as students are exercising their first amendment right and they're doing what they believe to be right.

>> rallies, encampments and arrests all part of this nationwide movement on college campuses. good evening. i'm cristina rendon, and i'm greg lee. >> here in the bay area, demonstrations have remained mostly peaceful. we have live team coverage of the protests. ktvu joey honda is live at uc berkeley, where dozens of tents have sprouted up through the week. but first, we go to ktvu. amber lee at stanford. amber university officials do not want these demonstrators out there all night again. >> they do not. but they're certainly here in a large number of them. let's take a look. we're at white memorial plaza, and the demonstrations have been taking place here. now the protesters are demanding that stanford divest from companies that have ties to israel. now and that's this estimated crowd of about 250 people chanted and danced, marched in circles. at one point, we counted more than a dozen tents set up here. now, stanford officials have said that these tents and overnight camping pose a security risk,

and they're saying that any student filing school policy could face discipline and if anyone breaks the law, they could be arrested. now, i spoke with a man who identified himself as a palestinian american who came here to observe and support the protesters. >> when i look at these kids, i fear. i fear for their safety, and i hope that they will be allowed to exercise their first amendment without the risk of being kind of retaliated against , or being arrested or being harassed or being harmed. >> these demonstrations coincide with stanford's admit weekend welcoming incoming students. i spoke with one student from houston who says he'll be starting here in the fall. they believe that israel is funding a genocide against the palestinian people. >> so i believe that with that mindset, they're totally right to ask for that.

>> now, there was a rally here that started at 730, ended about at half hour. but as you can see, people are still dancing and at points chanting. now back here, we haven't seen any police despite what the school officials have said. so we'll have to wait and see if anything happens. at this point. >> amber lee, thank you. let's go now to ktvu. joey horta at cal. joey, protesters have been sleeping in tents all week to draw attention to the war in gaza. >> that's right. greg and christina, we're outside the administration building. there are more than 70 of these tents lined up out here. organizers say they're not going anywhere until their demands are met. you know, as the final day of classes at uc berkeley come to a close on friday, pro-palestinian protesters are showing no signs of backing down. >> we have to do everything we can, given that relative, you know, privilege to be out here

and to really push as hard as we can. >> while demonstrations have turned violent at college campuses around the country this week here at cal, the uc berkeley divest coalition has led a peaceful protest. students are taking turns camping out, and they've grown from about a dozen tents on monday to more than 70 by friday. >> we have three kind of sleeping pads here undergrads cecilia luna parra shows us around the tent she's sharing with five fellow bears. >> she was just elected to berkeley city council last week. >> our tuition dollars are currently going to corporations that are aiding this genocide. >> protesters are calling for the uc to divest from those companies to end its silence on gaza, to cut ties with israeli universities and to protect students organizing in support of palestine. supporters are lending their own creativity to the cause, with this chalk artist sketching a bird onto the plaza bearing the colors of the

palestinian flag. it's kind of a way that i grieve, in a way that i can really just show my solidarity. others are old enough to remember berkeley's historic role as the home of the free speech movement. >> i remember the #### no. we won't go during the end of the vietnam war. sometimes you have to throw enough logs on the fire to create a big enough smoke signal. >> organizers say the protesters are several hundred strong. judy greenspan, a teacher from oakland, felt compelled to join them. >> it is very, very important that jewish educators come out in support of the students. palestinian, jewish progressive solidarity activists who are basically risking everything. >> organizers say these protests will continue until the university agrees to divest. now, a spokesman for uc berkeley tells us they won't be changing any investment policies here, but the university is allowing

these protests to continue, they say, because there haven't been any disruptions to classes here on campus. greg. >> joey, other universities have seen a heavy police presence at these protests. is that happening at berkeley? >> you know, we haven't seen any police out here on this campus around the protests here for the several hours we've been here today, greg, we were told by a spokesman for berkeley that they were told by the uc system president's office not to call police unless there's any sort of threat to campus safety. they say that has not happened here during these protests. greg >> all right. joey horta, live at uc berkeley. joey. thank you. cal poly humboldt announced today in person classes are canceled through the end of the semester as demonstrators continue to occupy several buildings on campus. a deadline has now passed for the protesters to pack up and go, before the school threatened to have them arrested. tonight, the university says some students have left and officials are encouraging the others to leave as they are violating campus

policy. >> the university of southern california's president has issued a statement for the first time since more than 90 people were arrested on campus following a protest. the demonstration first broke out on wednesday at the university's alumni park. los angeles police deployed officers to campus and issued a dispersal order in total, 93 protesters were arrested. the university has canceled its main commencement ceremony over safety concerns, leaving many students disappointed. i was crestfallen because this is a culmination of the four years at usc. >> we've worked so hard for this and for four years this has been our our shot at redemption. we're finally going to get to walk because none of us got to walk properly. >> is a usc senior from pleasanton. she missed her high school graduation back in 2020 due to the pandemic. in a statement tonight, usc's president carol folt wrote in part. usc has long standing protocols that allow for peaceful protesting, and we have been working successfully with our community to ensure these rules have been followed at

gatherings, protests and vigils taking place all year. usc also has firm rules regarding harassment and bullying that we will uphold. she went on to say the university is working to make graduation special this year, with new activities and surprises. >> nationwide protests continue to break out on college campuses, showing no signs of stopping today. around 40 people were arrested at the auraria campus in denver. several students set up tents and locked arms in a human barricade. denver police eventually stepped in, saying they were trespassing in new york, columbia university officials said there is no new deadline for protesters to leave after the latest one expired today. the tents remain up as the school says talks about protester demands for divesting and amnesty for those disciplined are. progressing and claim they will not call in the new york police department. >> we remain diligent in steadfast in our convictions. it will not be intimidated by the university's disturbing threat to our lives in atlanta.

>> classes are now virtual at emory university and at the university of florida. school officials say if students try to set up a tent on campus, they could face a three year suspension to stay on top of the latest developments at universities here in california and nationwide. head to our website, ktvu.com. >> new at ten san francisco officials and west portal merchants say they will work together on a new plan to improve traffic safety in the neighborhood. local businesses say they fear that the current proposal to eliminate left turns on yellow and west portal will drive customers away from the business district. the city's proposals follow the deaths of four family members in a crash at a bus stop near the west portal, muni station supervisor myrna melgar and the president of the west portal merchants, deidre vondrak, say a new joint committee will identify areas of consensus and improvement on a pleasanton community is in mourning tonight following the car crash that killed a family of four wednesday night neighbors visiting a memorial at the crash scene tell us they are in shock after hearing the

details of the crash. >> just on monday. i was walking my dog early in the morning and he waved me on the way to work and the next we heard is after that, that's that's the news we heard. so it's totally devastating and just the horrific and the violent nature of the death. like it's like we're not able to get past it. >> the crash happened on foothill boulevard in an area that's seen a number of violent accidents in recent years. ktvu crystal bailey spoke with friends of the family who are heartbroken. >> we were devastated. >> that's how anjali maskey felt when she found out her best friends were gone. although officials have not identified the family, she says her friends are tarun and rincy. george and their two sons. seen in these images from social media, maskey says the family was coming home from a birthday party on wednesday night when the crash happened. now she's trying to console her child who played with their kids. >> it's very hard for us to explain to children that a friend of their who is there, like last night and this

morning, he's not there, maskey says. >> the boys went to donlon elementary school and hart middle school, where school officials have sent grief counselors. one man, who lives off foothill, says he was outside when he heard explosions around 9:00 that night. every five to 10s, they boom, boom. >> so maybe around 5 to 8 times. >> shortly after the sound of sirens, officials saying the electric car might have been speeding when it lost control and crashed into a tree. that tree, now wrapped in flowers and debris, a cry from people who live nearby, need to slow down on foothill boulevard, police in less than two miles away, their home also surrounded in support. meanwhile, those close to the family are gathered in their home, mourning and sharing memories. >> the family was the most welcoming family to anybody in the neighborhood. they would be missed heavily, heavily. >> police say the crash is under investigation, and friends tell

i could mean some lengthy delays. if you get caught up in the detours. ktvu zac sos is live in pleasanton, where the temporary closure went into effect at around nine tonight. zach >> yeah, and traffic did build up as that closure went into effect earlier today. signage is out there to help people out

with those detours. but as a caltrans spokesperson told me earlier, you'll want to avoid this if you can. at the strike of nine road crews in pleasanton moving in to shut down southbound 680 at the 580 interchange all the way south to state route 84 in sunol road, work that janice marra of caltrans says will run through four in the morning on monday so they can resurface the roadway. >> we thank motorists for your patience as we work to improve the highway. >> patients, something bob gobble says he's now short on after repeated closures in the area. no, i'm not happy. >> i wish they could figure out a way to keep traffic moving and still get the work done. seems a pretty extreme to shut the whole thing down for such a period. >> it's work that caltrans says is long overdue for this stretch of highway. folks familiar with that roadway know it's full of potholes. >> it's not in the greatest shape. >> the reason they opted to do

all the work at once. we're eliminating 40 nighttime closures and shrinking them all into one weekend while repairs are underway. detours will be in place. >> best bet this weekend is probably to avoid the area. >> not an option for gobble. >> i'm taking my daughter to san jose airport tomorrow. from here. i think we're going to take the long way. >> a few pumps over virgil arnold. just learning about the construction. >> this is going to definitely affect my plans for the weekend. >> plans on the books to get together with family in the area. >> now that i realize what's going on, we're going to have to make some kind of detours. >> thankfully, caltrans says this weekend will mark the final phase of repairs to this section of the roadway. >> and when the roadway reopens monday at 4 a.m, it'll be a smooth ride for motorists. >> the idea of that now, that's something virgil and bob say they can get behind. >> it's horrible. i mean, it needs to be repaired, so i'm all for that. absolutely. >> they're terrible. so i'm really happy that they're fixing them. they're fixing them. that's great.

>> and again, all of these repairs are expected to wrap up at 4 a.m. on monday. the next round of construction will hit 680 in san ramon in may. greg. >> all right. zac sos live in pleasanton for us tonight. zach. thank you. in the north bay, highway 37 westbound is also closed tonight between highway 29 in vallejo and highway 121 at sears point. all westbound lanes will be closed from 9:00 tonight until 4 a.m. monday. this is the second of four weekend closures on 37 to repair and replace existing pavement. the eastbound direction of 37 will be shut down. the first two weekends of may. >> hundreds of customers were evacuated today from a costco in the east bay. here is a look at the scene. this was on monument boulevard in concord. this photo provided by the contra costa county fire protection district. they say about 800 customers and 200 employees were evacuated just after 2:00 this afternoon. contra costa fire officials say they responded to a refrigerant

leak, which can displace oxygen. police tell us there were no injuries. firefighters cleared the scene around 530 and the store was reopened for business. popular horned barbecue reopened today at a new location in oakland after a fire destroyed the restaurant last year. >> the line was out the door today near the intersection of eighth in broadway. the site of owner matt horn's other restaurant, matt's. horn says it's been a journey after the fire. he was not optimistic about being able to reopen again, but he's grateful to the community. >> the fire took a lot out of us, you know what i mean? that was our flagship location. we were actually celebrating our three years there. and then to be able to open back up and be able to serve barbecue again is what it's about. so grateful for that. >> back in november, the former horn barbecue location on mandela parkway caught fire. that location is now permanently closed. >> look at that new video tonight showing a large tornado touching down in eastern

nebraska. today, you can see debris flying all around as those twisters swirl near an event center in the city of lincoln. tornadoes have also caused significant damage in the suburbs of omaha. a trail of destruction left behind as officials there say hundreds of homes are now destroyed. the omaha public power district says nearly 10,000 customers are without power. this comes as severe weather has torn through different parts of the midwest and south. let's go now to ktvu meteorologist mark tamayo for more. hi, mark. >> hi there. christina extremely dangerous storms and sizable storms as you can see. we saw the visuals and also on the radar, as well as we put this into motion over the past few hours, you can see the radar imagery and, of course, those yellows and oranges and reds and link up to some very strong thunderstorms producing those tornadoes, in fact. take a look here. these are all the storm reports, and we are showing you all of the tornado reports from today. and if you're thinking about the tomorrow forecast, unfortunately it's still going to be a dangerous situation in this area in red. as you can see , at least an enhanced threat

from portions of iowa down towards texas as well. so something we'll have to watch closely over the next 24 hours. now, for us, we had some very strong winds out there. as you know, winds upwards of 30 to 40 approaching 50 miles an hour. take a look at these winds. these are the gusts throughout the day. ocean beach, 47 miles an hour. oakland airport, 46 miles an hour. hayward, 40 miles an hour. petaluma 36 miles an hour. and it is still breezy out there for this evening. winds tomorrow there'll still be. there will still be a breeze in your saturday forecast. just not as strong as today. so partly sunny and breezy. temperatures in the upper 50s to the lower 70s. and then on sunday, mostly sunny skies, a little bit of some warming for the second half of the weekend and no rainfall to worry about as we head into your weekend. here's a satellite. throughout the day, we were watching some showers and thunderstorms just to the east of the bay area in terms of the organized thunderstorm activity, very close to us and even the possibility of a few sprinkles least approaching the region in the short term, but also look out toward the sierra.

debate biden, quote, anywhere, any time, any place. >> well, tonight we are learning more about the much anticipated israeli offensive into southern gaza. just as efforts are underway to bring humanitarian aid into that region. a new satellite image appears to show construction of an aid port near gaza city. the site will eventually be the home of a temporary u.s. military pier, as the war in gaza continues. security concerns were heightened this week when the port came under fire during a mortar attack. all of this happening as israeli signals it's getting closer to a major ground operation in the southern city of rafah. it is home to an estimated 1.3 million civilians seeking shelter from the war. many are now forced to leave once again. >> this is the third time we're relocating. there is no safety anywhere. >> we came here and there's been shelling several strikes last night and they tell you it's a safe place. how is it a safe place? >> today, national security adviser jake sullivan said he saw fresh momentum in ongoing

looking into sexual assault allegations involving those in the political community. today, the san francisco democratic party announced the creation of that special committee. the political group say it was formed in response to serious allegations against a person active in the san francisco political community. recently, former nonprofit director john jacobo was accused by several women of rape. jacobo was once seen as a rising star in the local democratic party. >> tonight we are learning more about the san francisco police department's new plan to crack down on speeding. ktvu christian captain shows us how officers are hoping to use a network of dozens of cameras to get drivers to slow down. >> some intersections in san francisco are notorious for speeding vehicles, including mission and ninth street. people living in the area say

pedestrians have to pay close attention when crossing. >> it's pretty erratic. you really have to be aware when you're crossing this intersection now. >> san francisco police say the department has already started a plan to step up scrutiny and enforcement at this intersection and nine other high injury corridors in an effort to slow drivers down. pedestrian advocacy group walk san francisco says speed kills and anything the police can do to slow drivers down will help save lives. >> speed is the worst and most dangerous driving behavior. it is the cause of most of the crashes that we've seen in san francisco, and we're happy that the sfpd is going to start really focusing on that most dangerous behavior. word about the latest enforcement effort with officers in person enforcing the speed limit comes as the city prepares to install 33 speed cameras at dangerous stretches of road walk. >> sf says it's all part of an overlapping network of enforcement aimed at protecting pedestrians, cyclists and even

drivers. >> this combination of sfpd and cameras working together, it really does show that san francisco is a city where, the city cares about its people coming into san francisco. it does want people to walk and bike more. it wants to make its streets safe. >> for some, pedestrians say while they hope the added enforcement works, they're not sure it will have a lasting impact. >> so as long as they're around, yeah, it'll slow down, but i don't. i think it'll go right back once they leave to combat the chance of only having a short term impact. >> san francisco police say their enforcement will come in waves to make sure there is consistent enforcement over a sustained period of time. police say some components of the plan are already in place. others, they say, are still being implemented in san francisco. christien kafton ktvu, fox two news san francisco mayor london breed wants to waive fees for more night markets, block parties and farmers markets. >> the mayor introduced two new bills today. one would waive city fees for outdoor community

events, making them less costly for organizers. the other would simplify health permitting for food vendors at some events. currently permitting for outdoor community events can range anywhere from 500 to $10,000. >> three people are under arrest in connection with the string of 11 robberies in the east bay. the arrests were made in a coordinated effort with multiple agencies, including u.s. marshals. the robberies took place between august 2023 and this past february 7th were in hayward. the others were in livermore, fremont, san leandro, and castro valley. the suspects are identified as 42 year old jerry washington and 24 year old cameron watkins. both are from oakland. the third suspect is 26 year old concord resident deonte hunt. they're charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated kidnaping and various weapons violations. >> supporters of alameda county district attorney pamela price are calling the recall effort a waste of taxpayer money. today, the group hosted a rally in oakland while a recall has been

certified, a date has not been set that decision is up to the board of supervisors. organizers of the rally say they are urging the board not to set a special election in august, but to make the recall part of the general election. >> the special election is costly and not enough of the community is involved in a special election. if we're going to have this recall because of the barely being able to get the number of signatures that we need, the election has got to be put on the regular ballot. >> under state law, the county charter and board of supervisors have until april 30th to set a date for the recall election. >> law enforcement gathered today to honor the life of a young oakland officer. >> oakland police officer jordan wingate died nearly six years after he was critically injured in a crash while on duty. our henry lee was at the service where hearts were heavy.

>> motor officers escorted the casket of fallen oakland police officer jordan wingate to three crosses church in castro valley, where hundreds of officers gathered to pay their respects. officers, with their badges wrapped in bands of mourning, stood at atntion and solemn farewell to wingate, who died nearly six years after he was hurt in an on duty crash. >> your legacy will live on in the countless lives you've touched. we love you and we miss you. we will never forget you. >> interim chief darren allison presented the flag from the officer's casket to his family. wingate was hurt in a crash back in 2018 that involved his patrol car, another car and a big rig parked at the port of oakland. after a years long fight for his life, he died on saturday at the age of 28. retired oakland police captain randy wingate paused at his son's flag draped casket before addressing mourners. he spoke of his son asking him to make lunch for him

as a 21 year old. turns out it wasn't about the food, which his son only ate half of anyway. it was about the notes that came with it, and it dawned on me when i would make him lunch. >> when i would make the kids lunches, i would write, i love you or i'm proud of you. i write a note on the lunch. i then realized that, yeah, we will always remember you. >> the laughs you gave us in your beautiful smile. >> the fallen officer had followed in his father's footsteps, as well as his godfather, oakland officer willie wilkins, killed by friendly fire back in 2001. officer daniel estrada says he finds some comfort that both are together once again. >> the way jordan shared memories of officer willie and how he spoke highly of him, is the way i will ever speak of jordan. >> officer danielle juarez, an academy classmate, said her friend, once named rookie of the year, always showed up at big calls and was the ultimate backup. >> when this career starts to take a toll on us, all we have
