at cal poly. humboldt. students were given a deadline this afternoon to pack up and go, and the humboldt campus is now closed for the remainder of the year. at uc berkeley, students have been camped out for a week now with little interference from the university or law enforcement, and a similar scene at stanford. protesters there heading into the second night of a tent city in the middle of campus universities trying to balance freedom of speech rights while keeping campuses safe. ktvu mark sayer is live at stanford tonight, and shows us the fine line universities are walking. mark >> well, christina, compared to some of the confrontations we've seen at columbia in new york and also usc in los angeles, what's been happening here at stanford has been fairly calm and fairly peaceful. let me step out of the way. we are at white memorial plaza. this is right next to the stanford bookstore in the middle of campus, where students first set up these tents after their big rally on thursday night. on friday afternoon, students were mostly keeping to themselves in a cordoned off area of the plaza

. there were no bullhorns nor speeches. it was just food, music and camaraderie. organizers say the goal of this protest is very focused. protesters want stanford to first disclose its investments related to any corporations profiting from the conflict in gaza, and then to divest. >> the ceasefire call is definitely a part of it, right? but like, i think we understand that within our very local context of being stanford university students, we can probably leverage the most effort towards making a cease fire happen by like building on this huge pile of pressure, right, of which divestment and that kind of company pressure is a very clear part of that picture. >> on friday, stanford released this statement. while stanford understands students perspectives on an important global issue, violations of university policy will not be overlooked. the submission of student names to the office of community standards student conduct process has begun in the university also sent a message to the full community saying that the overnight tents are a safety and security issue and they are a clear violation of

university policy at usc. in los angeles, campus leaders have taken a different approach and called in the police to break up protests. and now administrators have announced that university wide graduation ceremonies have been canceled. >> i was disheartened, obviously it has been a possibility for a few weeks given usc's decision to pull our valedictorian speech. >> we've known that it it might happen for a few weeks, as there is definitely some turmoil on campus. >> mira popli is a usc senior who is from pleasanton. while she is holding out hope some sort of smaller degree level ceremonies will still occur, usc's decision means she could miss her second graduation ceremony. >> i was crestfallen because this is a culmination of the four years at usc. >> we've worked so hard for this and for four years this has been our our shot at redemption. we're finally going to get to walk because none of us got to walk in 2020, when we graduated during covid into not have, you

know, the final moment of, you know, the moment in sun for the kids. >> i feel terrible for them. >> and back to a live picture here at stanford. now students are not saying definitively if they plan to keep their tents up for a second night, which would be a violation of university policies. we have seen campus public safety officers watching over this protest from a distance. so far, there has been no interaction between those public safety officers and the protesters here. there are about 16 or 18 tents here in white plaza behind me. what happens later tonight remains to be seen reporting live on the stanford campus. i'm mark sayer, ktvu, fox two news. christina mark, thank you for that report. >> one of the biggest protest in one of the first took root at columbia university in new york and spread across the country. fox's rebecca castor is in washington, d.c, where protests are now springing up in the nation's capital. no peace on stolen land. >> it's a scene now commonplace on college campuses across the u.s, as university students from columbia, ut, austin, emory, gw

and more raised their voices and set up encampments to protest israel's war in gaza. the protesters are calling for a cease fire in gaza and are demanding their universities cut any financial ties to businesses that are profiting from the conflict. but for some jewish students, the rhetoric is concerning and they fear for their safety. >> what these people are doing here is standing up for justice. i haven't heard any anti-semitism from them, but do you feel that it's threatening when you call for an intifada revolution? >> you're calling for the mass death of jews, the mass murder of jews. you're coming to my university and you're going to tell me that you're not threatening me. >> college presidents are trying to balance free speech while also ensuring the safety of their students. >> honestly, the university has done everything they can to be able to stop these protests or to be able to defend the jewish students on this campus, but there's only so much that they can do. >> we are able to exist here and live and learn and commune and

protest together, palestinians are not able to do that. >> as the protests continue, they're starting to have an effect on the end of the school year. gw had to relocate its law school final exams, and the university of southern california canceled its main commencement. protests have spilled over outside campus because george washington university is one of several college campuses that is in its safety mode right now, meaning only students and faculty with id cards can get on campus. in washington, rebecca castor, fox news. >> a well known author from berkeley was among those arrested in southern israel today, the group of american and israeli rabbis and supporters demonstrated near the border with gaza to demand a cease fire and the delivery of aid. novelist michael chabon said his wife, author ayelet waldman, was among those arrested and later released. the organizers say the demonstration was in the spirit of passover, celebrating food and freedom. >> and so at this point, to do

this action now really resonates with the spirit of the season of passover. the spirit of is the passover is the season of our liberation, and we want it to be a season of liberation for all people. because no people are free unless all people are free. >> u.n. officials say northern gaza is heading towards famine and claim israel has not allowed delivery of food and other critical aid to the region. >> a new program that's helping bay area high school students become more resilient and empowered is getting support from the state. menlo park state lawmakers josh becker and mark berman presented a symbolic check for $300,000 to the oshman family jewish community center in palo alto. today, the center launched the prep fellowship last fall. the goal is to provide high school juniors and seniors with life skills as they head to college, a gap year or the workforce. >> through this program, our teens have been equipped to engage in open and constructive conversations, support their peers, and confidently navigate their own identities, jewish or otherwise, particularly in in

environments where they may be marginalized or discriminated against. especially how we've seen after october 7th. >> so far, the program has served a dozen students during workshops and a weekend retreat. organizers say the students learned how to stand up for themselves at a time of growing incidence of anti-semitism, a developing story in concord this hour, where authorities say that a thousand people were evacuated from a costco. >> here's a look at the scene on monument boulevard. this picture provided by calfire. they say about 800 customers and 200 employees were evacuated just after 2:00 this afternoon. contra costa fire officials say they responded to a refrigerant leak, which can displace oxygen. police tell us no injuries were reported. firefighters do plan to wrap up soon and will then release the area back open for that store to reopen. >> law enforcement from around the area gathered today to honor the life of a young oakland officer, oakland police officer jordan wingate died nearly six years after he was critically injured in a crash while on

duty. our henry lee was at the service where hearts were heavy. >> motor officers escorted the casket of fallen oakland police officer jordan wingate to three crosses church in castro valley, where hundreds of officers gathered to pay their respects. officers, with their badges wrapped in bands of mourning, stood at attention and solemn farewell to wingate, who died nearly six years after he was hurt in an on duty crash. >> your legacy will live on in the countless lives you've touched. we love you and we miss you. we will never forget you. >> interim chief darren allison presented the flag from the officer's casket to his family. wingate was hurt in a crash back in 2018 that involved his patrol car, another car and a big rig parked at the port of oakland. after a years long fight for his life, he died on saturday at the age of 28. retired oakland police captain randy wingate paused at a suns flag draped

casket before addressing mourners. he spoke of his son asking him to make lunch for him, as a 21 year old turns out it wasn't about the food, which his son only ate. half of anyway. it was about the notes that came with it, and it dawned on me when i would make him lunch. >> when i would make the kids lunches, i would write, i love you or i'm proud of you. i write a note on the lunch i then realized that yeah, we will always remember you, the laughs you gave us and your beautiful smile. >> the fallen officer had followed in his father's footsteps, as well as his godfather, oakland officer willie wilkins, killed by friendly fire back in 2001. officer daniel estrada says he finds some comfort that both are together once again. >> the way jordan shared memories of officer willie and how he spoke highly of him is the way i will ever speak of jordan. >> officer danielle juarez, an academy classmate, said her friend, once named rookie of the

year, always showed up at big calls and was the ultimate backup. >> when this career starts to take a toll on us, all we have are each other. jordan always made sure he was there for me and anyone that needed him. >> officer wingate was buried at a private ceremony in lafayette. in castro valley henry lee ktvu fox two news. >> the pleasanton community is heartbroken over the loss of a family of four in the tragic crash. on wednesday night, pleasanton police say the family was in an electric car when it crashed into a tree on foothill boulevard near stoneridge drive. ktvu crystal bailey spoke with people who knew the family. crystal >> well, it was a horrific scene here wednesday night that first responders came and found a family of four, the entire family dead here after a fiery crash. and now you can still see the scene has pieces of the car all over the place, and the

community is wrapping their arms around this family with flowers and messages of hope. >> we were devastated. >> that's how anjali maskey felt when she found out her best friends were gone. although officials have not identified the family, she says her friends are tarun and rincy. george and their two sons. seen in these images from social media, maskey says the family was coming home from a birthday party on wednesday night when the crash happened. now she's trying to console her child who played with their kids. >> it's very hard for us to explain to children that a friend of their who is there, like last night and this morning, he's not there. >> maskey says the boys went to donlon elementary school and hart middle school, where school officials have sent grief counselors. one man, who lives off foothill, says he was outside when he heard explosions around 9:00 that night. every five to 10s, they boom, boom. >> so maybe around 5 to 8 times. >> shortly after the sound of sirens, officials saying the

electric car might have been speeding when it lost control and crashed into a tree. that tree, now wrapped in flowers and debris, a cry from people who live nearby, need to slow down on foothill boulevard, police in less than two miles away, their home also surrounded in support. meanwhile, those close to the family are gathered in their home, mourning and sharing memories. >> the family was the most welcoming family to anybody in the neighborhood. they would be missed heavily, heavily. >> well, the crash is still under investigation. the friends that i spoke to say family members are coming in over the weekend from india and of course, the entire pleasanton community here is mourning this tragic loss. i'm live in pleasanton, crystal bailey, ktvu, fox two news. >> yeah, just heartbroken for the family. crystal. thank you. >> coming up next, slow down san francisco will have a live report on which intersections

says he tried to deescalate that situation by asking the man to put the items back, but the thief ignored him. mills and two other men then held the suspect down until other officers arrived. >> three people are under arrest in connection with a string of 11 robberies in the east bay. the arrests were made in a coordinated effort with multiple agencies, including u.s. marshals. the robberies took place between august 2023 and this past february 7th were in hayward. the others were in livermore, fremont, san leandro, and castro valley. the suspects are identified as 42 year old jerry washington and 24 year old cameron watkins. both are from oakland. the third suspect is 26 year old concord resident deonte hunt. they're all charged with robbery, assault with a deadly weapon, aggravated kidnaping and various weapons violations. an oakland donut shop owner is hoping police track down a man who brazenly stole a cash register yesterday, right out of the shop. it's captured on surveillance video here. the owner of dick's donuts on high street says the masked man first came in and bought coffee in a

donut and left. he returned a few seconds later, grabbed the register off the counter and ran out. he drove off in a waiting getaway car. the register had $1,300 in cash inside. >> san francisco police are offering details tonight on the department's new plan to crack down on speeding. ktvu is christian captain live in the city at one of those intersections where officers will be watching closely for speeders, christian. >> yeah. hi. we are at the intersection of geary and divisadero, and this is one of those intersections that has all the hallmarks for speeding. it has multiple lanes east and west bound. it has a light that drivers sometimes feel they need to race to try to get here. and you can see it has crosswalks going on in each direction. so that is why this is one of those intersections that the city says it's now going to be focusing on , to make sure that it tries to stop as many speeders as possible. some intersections in san francisco are notorious for speeding vehicles, including mission and ninth street. people living in the area say pedestrians have to pay close

attention when crossing. >> it's pretty erratic. you really have to be aware when you're crossing this intersection now. >> san francisco police say the department has already started a plan to step up scrutiny and enforcement at this intersection, and nine other high injury corridors in an effort to slow drivers down. pedestrian advocacy group walk san francisco says speed kills and anything the police can do to slow drivers down will help save lives. >> speed is the worst and most dangerous driving behavior. it is the cause of most of the crashes that we've seen in san francisco, and we're happy that the sfpd is going to start really focusing on that most dangerous behavior. >> word about the latest enforcement effort with officers in person, enforcing the speed limit comes as the city prepares to install 33 speed cameras at dangerous stretches of road walk . sf says it's all part of an overlapping network of enforcement aimed at protecting pedestrians, cyclists and even drivers.

>> this combination of sfpd and cameras working together, it really does show that san francisco is a city where, the city cares about its people coming into san francisco. it does want people to walk and bike more. it wants to make its streets safe. >> some pedestrians say while they hope the added enforcement works, they're not sure it will have a lasting impact as long as they're around. >> yeah, it'll slow down, but i don't. i think it'll go right back once they leave. >> and to combat the chance of only having a short term impact, san francisco police say their enforcement will come in waves to make sure there is consistent enforcement over a sustained period of time. police say some components of the plan are already in place. others, they say, are still being implemented. we're live in san francisco, christien kafton, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, christian, thank you for that. >> well, bay area weather, a cool, blustery day out there today. some strong northwesterly winds moving across the entire bay area. so you probably notice

those those gusty conditions throughout the day as we take a look at some of the stronger winds reported throughout the morning and afternoon hours, some of the peak gusts so far over 30, over 40 miles an hour, no wind advisories, but definitely the winds. a big, big uptick throughout the day today for your friday, here's the plan. this weekend. partly sunny. it's still breezy tomorrow. probably not as strong as today, but still. winds could be around 20 to 25 miles an hour and then on sunday more sunshine, a touch warmer. and get the idea here. we're thinking a bit of a warming trend that begins this weekend that will continue into early next week. while we have some sunshine around here, it's interesting. in the sierra, they are picking up some snowfall out in the mountains here, out toward the lake tahoe area, and also some thunderstorms right around the sacramento valley. some lightning strikes detected. we'll have to keep an eye on all this activity up to our north and to our east, but looks like looks like the bulk of the action is just outside of the bay area. but close enough. you could see it's pretty close out toward the sacramento area, but we have lots of sunshine overhead. and still those blustery conditions out there.

action. the iconic oceanside pier erupted in flames late yesterday, sending billowing smoke into the skies. crowds in oceanside gathered around locals and tourists alike in disbelief

as that fire raged on. firefighters worked all night to contain and fully extinguish the flames. now, investigators are working to figure out what sparked the fire and what kind of repairs will be needed. an investigation is underway into what started a fire that destroyed a residential building undergoing renovation in san francisco's presidio heights neighborhood. >> the first alarm came in just before 430 this morning for the fire at the four story building at light and clay streets. this is just south of the presidio. the fire department says. when crews arrived, the building was engulfed in flames. it was wet and windy, and smoke from the fire was blown through city streets. >> when firefighters arrived that wind that you just heard about was pushing smoke for blocks. heavy smoke, visibility was very low and it was very dangerous for our firefighters in the wind and in the midst. >> firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading to neighboring buildings. they searched the structure, but no one was inside and no injuries were reported. the fire was under control by 5 a.m.

>> san francisco muni says the software issue caused some slowdowns along market street this morning. they say the glitch affected the subway train control system in the downtown stations. that led to slow moving trains between van ness and embarcadero, muni added shuttle busses for additional service. they say a system reboot reboot brought things back to normal before noon. >> tesla is under scrutiny again by the government's auto safety agency, the national highway traffic safety administration is looking into whether last year's recall of tesla's autopilot driving system did enough to make sure drivers pay attention to the road. the agency says the tesla has reported 20 more crashes involving autopilot since the recall of more than 2 million vehicles. the recall updated software to increase warnings to drivers. southwest airlines is shutting down operations at four airports, the carrier also cutting 2000 jobs in an effort to improve their financial performance. the airports are bellingham international airport in washington statecozumel international airport in mexico,

daniels. instead trump says he should be in florida with his wife melania, celebrating her birthday. >> i'll be going there this evening after this case finishes up as horrible, unconstitutional case. >> the eighth day of trump's hush money criminal trial included cross examination by trump's legal team of david pecker, the former national enquirer publisher is the first to testify in the case and told prosecutors earlier in the week he agreed to spend thousands of dollars to purchase the rights to stories that might embarrass trump during his 2016 campaign, but not publish them, a process known as catch and kill. trump's defense team worked to discredit the idea, arguing what was done was not an effort to influence the election, but standard procedure for the tabloid. at the end, an attorney for trump asked pecker about his obligations to cooperate with the prosecution. pecker

truth social, saying, quote, i suggest monday evening, tuesday evening or wednesday evening at my rally in michigan, a recount in the race to replace retiring peninsula congresswoman anna eshoo in district 16 should be finalized by next week. >> santa clara county says it has scanned all 199 precincts, but is still working to reconcile some ballots. at least seven more ballots were added during the recount. san mateo is also working to clear some ballots of their own. at last check, assembly member evan lowe has a one vote lead over santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. whoever comes out on top will face former san jose mayor sam liccardo in november. if lowe and simitian end up in a tie again, both will take on liccardo in a three way runoff. >> well, it appears that no one is immune from car break ins, not even lawmakers. someone broke into the car of u.s. senate candidate adam schiff during his visit to san francisco, forcing a change of plans for one of his events. schiff's car was in a downtown

parking garage when his luggage was stolen yesterday. in this photo of schiff speaking at a campaign event in burlingame, we see him in a shirt and vest, dressed more casually than those around him. his other clothes were in that stolen luggage, the inflation measure, closely watched by the federal reserve, rose faster than expected last month. >> high prices continue to weigh on millions of americans, as fox's gerri willis shows us, high prices continue to weigh on those americans. >> inflation showed little signs of letting up in march. the personal consumption expenditure index and inflation reading rose 2.7% for the year ending in march, up 2.8% for the year, excluding food and energy, the monthly increases were in line with expectations up 3/10 of a percent, which matches the previous month. >> inflation has shown more stickiness than than even we expected, and we've been talking about it now for a good six months. >> americans were making a little more last month. incomes rose half a percent, and they continued to open their wallets

despite steeper prices. spending was up 8/10 of a percent. economists anticipate spending will slow further in the coming months as consumers continue to grapple with expensive goods, high interest rates and the resumption of federal student loan payments. >> it's really the services sector of the economy that's pushing those prices higher. they have some pricing power. those companies do, and that's that's going to be a problem going forward. >> meanwhile, consumer sentiment weakened at the end of this month. the university of michigan's reading dropped to 77.2 from 77.9 in early april. those responding now believe inflation will average 3.2% in the next year. >> and i can just give you a laundry list of things at the supermarket that aunt mary and uncle bob are buying today that either a much higher in price or like the chips, you're getting half the size of the bag for the same price that you did a couple of years ago. and if that doesn't change, it's not good news going forward. >> all eyes are on the fed now and how it reacts to its meeting

next week in new york. gerri willis fox business. >> now, despite that inflation news it was a big friday on wall street. the dow was up 153 points. the nasdaq gained 316 for its best week since november , and the s&p jumped 51 points. stocks finished the week on a high note as a result of positive results from ai competitors microsoft and alphabet. >> secretary of state antony blinken wrapped up his trip to china today with a sit down with president xi jinping. blinken raised a number of concerns, including artificial intelligence and chemicals, to make fentanyl originating from china. the main point of the trip was to warn china against support for russia in its war against ukraine. communication between the us and china appears to be getting better, but some white house critics think it is all for show. >> this is talk for the sake of talk and frankly, i think the biden administration is just hoping they can get through the next handful of months without something exploding in asia. in the same way it has in the middle east and in europe. >> the potential tiktok ban in

negligence led to the death of their embryos. the lawsuit claims. an employee at ovation fertility clinic destroyed the embryos by using hydrogen peroxide instead of distilled water in an incubator. the women are alleging that the clinic knowingly implanted them with the dead embryos, waited, you know, on pins and needles for 12 days, waiting to find out if there was going to be a positive pregnancy test. and during that time, every, every little twinge in your body means something. you just can't get away from the

down the first two weekends of may in oakland. >> popular horned barbecue reopened today at a new location after a fire destroyed the restaurant last year. the line was out the door today at the new spot near the intersection of eighth and broadway. the owner, matt horne, says it's been a journey after the fire. he was not optimistic about being able to reopen again, but he's grateful to the community. >> the fire took a lot out of us, you know what i mean? that was our flagship location. we were actually celebrating our three years there. and then to be able to open back up and be able to serve barbecue again is what it's about. so grateful for that. >> back in november, the former horne barbecue location on mandela parkway caught fire. that location is now permanently closed. >> well, it was a call to action after several deaths at a homeless encampment in san jose. advocates knew something needed to be done. as ktvu dan rubin explains, they scrambled to gather help and brought a resource fair right to the encampment. >> right after the third death at the san jose homeless

encampment, advocates wanted to do something i had asked the people of the camp if they wanted to have a memorial, or if they wanted to have a resource fair to hopefully address the needs and for people to stop dying at this camp, they said. >> a resource fair, the homeless asked for specific things like mental health help and narcan training, and they wanted them as soon as possible. >> they called it an emergency. yeah mostly due to fentanyl. >> and, now this new, you know, this new drug that's kind of come into play, the new drug, xylazine or tranq. >> experts say it turns users into zombies, can rot the skin and is not helped by narcan. >> now it's made its way out here. so unfortunately, this encampment really needs some help. >> a pair of socks. >> and so advocates pulled this resource fair together in just three weeks and brought it right to the encampment off of cherry avenue. they offered showers and food, as well as housing and medical assistance. there was specific training on when narcan

a cat thought to be lost was inside that box, kerri clark said. her family's indoor cat, galena, mysteriously disappeared april 10th from their home in utah. friends and family helped them search for a week, and then they got a call from los angeles . amazon employee brandi hunter says she and her coworkers found a box with five different pairs of work boots and a set of paws. hunter says galena must have been in that box for at least six days. she took the cat to
