support. daca. >> this is the wiggle. several blocks worth of streets marked with green bike route signs on the pavement where both cars and bicyclists share the road, zigzagging across the map for a mile from mission to haight. >> anytime you have cars and people and bikes, you know it's a it's a dangerous formula. >> fed up with what they feel are dangerous streets, members of safe street rebel took matters into their own hands. the group drilled these very official looking signs into the median on tuesday without city approval, warning drivers to yield to pedestrians and bikes. i loved them, i live right here and there's this big speed bump right here and you hear cars scraping over it all the time. >> and for the last couple of days it was quiet. >> now, worried about being cited or sued, members of the group don't want to reveal their names or faces on camera. >> we really feel like sfmta needs to step up and just really drastically improve street safety.

>> neighbors have seen their fair share of accidents along the wiggle. >> one of our neighbors that happens to live across the street from the park was hit in his wheelchair. it's a horrific, extremely dangerous intersection. >> safe street rebels also claims responsibility for creating their own fire lanes. this week by painting the curbs red along steiner street, even including a city logo. this is still not a safe route. >> it's still prioritizes cars. and with just a small with just some small improvements, it could be safer for everyone. >> sfmta tells ktvu. while they appreciate the push for safer streets, the city's efforts are guided by engineering best practices and carry out thorough review of feasibility and effectiveness for new or proposed roadway designs. organizers are hoping this sends a message to the city that more can be done out here to keep everyone safe while out on the streets in san francisco. joey jordan, ktvu, fox two news san

francisco police will be focusing on what they've described as the most dangerous intersection in the city. >> the standard reports officers will be monitoring nine intersections that have become hotspots for crashes. some include larkin and eddie streets , fulton and park, presidio, mission street and dubose avenue as well. police say speed is most often the factor when there's a deadly crash, and they hope their presence will help to slow drivers down. >> new at 11 tonight, senate candidate adam schiff is the latest victim of a car burglary in san francisco. schiff's car was in a downtown parking garage today when his luggage was stolen. this is a photo of him at a dinner in berlin. burlingame. you can see he's in a vest and a shirt while everyone else is in suits. the dinner was hosted by attorney joe cotchett, who is supporting schiff's campaign. schiff told the chronicle, yes, they took my bags, but i'm here to thank joe. >> we turn now to the ongoing protests on college campuses across the country. tonight,

ucla is the latest university to see hundreds of students establish an encampment at the center of campus and a similar scene at rival usc, the university announced today it is canceling its main graduation ceremony due to security threats. >> the university still, though, plans to hold smaller graduation ceremonies here in the bay area. >> demonstrators are still on stanford's campus and growing in numbers as more people have set up tents all throughout the night. hundreds of people took part in a pro palestinian rally that happened earlier this afternoon, and they say they do plan on staying on campus all night. the students at stanford join other protests on campuses nationwide, calling for universities to divest from companies with ties to israel. >> ktvu lamonica peters spoke with some of the students and has our report. >> at stanford university, hundreds of pro-palestinian protesters gathered thursday afternoon chanting and marching on campus. we will not stop.

>> we will not rest. this calls for mass. >> through their chants, they called on the university to divest from what they call apartheid. another twitter. no more money for israel slaughter. >> no more money for israel slaughter. free palestine free free palestine. >> to divest means the university would divert money from its investments in companies that protesters believe are tied to israel and profit from the war in gaza. >> and if you really want to know what the students want, maybe just maybe, try to talk to them, try to sit down on a table with them, maybe try to listen to their chants once and not think about it as just some mob that's trying to destroy your house. >> organizers at stanford are calling the movement the people's university of palestine , and say they want to establish an alternative learning space to raise political consciousness in white memorial plaza, supporters spoke about why they felt

compelled to join the protest. >> i urge us to keep all of this in mind, that the black struggle in the palestinian struggle are inextricably tied to one another. >> as an international student from vietnam, the only reason that i'm standing here right now is because a few decades ago, millions of students and people from all over the world and the us stood up and fought for us, for divestment, for our liberation, for the wars and the killings to stop. >> there are still dozens of students on campus here at stanford. they have tents set up, and they say they intend to stay overnight and continue the protest tomorrow. now i reached out to stanford university officials, and they say they support the students right to free speech. but if any of the university policies are broken, they do intend to pursue disciplinary action. lamonica peters ktvu, fox two news meantime, in berkeley, a student encampment continues to grow outside the administrative building on the cal campus.

>> more protesters have set up tents in front of sproul hall. demonstrators here have the same demands, including that the university condemn the violence in gaza. uc berkeley says it has no plans to change its investment policies and practices. and as far as the protest goes, the university says it does not plan to engage with the demonstrators unless there is a specific threat to public safety, and you can stay on top of our coverage of the israel-hamas war, as well as the protests on our website, ktvu.com, and on the fox local app. >> new tonight, the san francisco unified school district has received more than 10,000 responses concerning school closures. tonight, the district superintendent hosted a virtual meeting to update families about the feedback they received after a recent survey. superintendent doctor matt wayne says they received a lot of fears that smaller schools are being targeted. he says size is not a factor. >> if you know, if we had said

our commitment was to have the same number of students in every school, well, then we could just say, well, we're going to have, you know, in every school has 1000 students. well, then it's really easy, right? we'd have 49 schools, but we're not going to do that because that does not align with our commitment to a variety of school sizes. >> the superintendent says they also received a lot of questions about how many schools planned to close. he says they don't have that answer yet. a new survey has been released. the superintendent will present the criteria for mergers, co-locations or closures to the board of education in june. >> state attorney general rob bonta is moving to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the rollback of title nine under the trump administration. bonta says this comes as the biden administration has released a new final title nine rule that addresses the issues raised in the litigation by a coalition of states, including california. the new rule restores protections against sexual harassment and assault and provides protection against

discrimination for lgbtq plus and pregnant or parenting students. >> kim kardashian joined with vice president kamala harris at the white house today. they gathered for a roundtable discussion on criminal justice reform for people who received presidential pardons this week. joined the pair. the kardashian kim kardashian has previously used her celebrity status to advocate for clemency for those she feels are in justly imprisoned, and she started coming in for these talks during the trump administration. >> tonight on west coast rap, a massive fire breaks out at a southern california pier. what we know about the investigation, and for the first time, michelin is releasing a list of top hotels. >> we'll tl you about he ay

oceanside pier in san diego county. >> the story starts tonight's west coast rap. officials say that fire started around three this afternoon in a vacant restaurant at the end of that pier, around 200 personnel from firefighters, lifeguards and police were on the scene. minutes later, forward progress of the fire stopped shortly before 6:00 this evening. the cause of that fire is still not known. officials say structural engineers will be reviewing the area now to identify what parts of the pier can be saved. >> also in southern california, former usc running back reggie

bush spoke publicly today in los angeles one day after getting his heisman trophy back. bush won the award back in 2005, but voluntarily gave it up in 2010 when the ncaa said he received gifts from two agents while he was at usc. the heisman trust restored the honor after considering changes across the college sports landscape that allows student athletes now to get paid for their name, image and likeness. bush explained today how much the loss meant to him. >> so for me, the work and effort that i put in it felt like it just was was taken away from me, you know, and i put in way too much hard work. bush and his attorneys did make it clear today he does not plan to drop the defamation lawsuit he filed against the ncaa last year that claims they characterized him as a cheater. >> in las vegas, formula one is returning in just seven months, but this year, with some changes

, despite the event bringing in more than $1 billion for las vegas last year, many businesses and residents complained about road closures and heavy traffic. several businesses sued formula one racing, saying they lost a combined $25 million last year because of construction of the f1 grand prix this year, race officials say they are going to have a more extensive community engagement plan. >> year one was tough in so many ways and we wanted we want to create an incredible race and incredible fan experience, but also be just a, you know, a better member of this community, good communication, good community engagement. and we're really excited about what we have coming forward this year. >> race officials say this year, the event will also feature more general admission tickets and cheaper ticket options so that more of the community can come out to the race. well we have a follow up tonight on a series of violent incidents at san francisco county jails. >> eight inmates have now been charged in connection with the alleged attacks on deputies that

led to jail lockdowns. >> ktvu is crystal bailey has reaction now from the sheriff and the union representing the deputies. >> i think it's really important to see that as a step towards accountability. >> eight inmates are charged with the attacks on deputies at the county jails. the incidents causing the sheriff to shut down the jails for several days. injuries include bumps to the head and bite marks by an inmate who was restrained. >> we have deputies that enforce the rules and deputies that don't enforce the rules, so the ones that enforce the rules are the ones that become the focus of people's anger or frustration. >> half of those charged were in jail on murder charges. three others had violent offenses like burglary and having a gun. >> we have to deal with making sure our staff are equipped, not just with, safety equipment, but also with the ability to de-escalate situations and deal with people. >> anytime someone's exhausted or fatigued, it affects performance, it affects reactionary time, so all of this has an impact. >> ken lomba with the san

francisco deputy sheriffs association says ten deputies have been injured in three weeks. in all ten cases. he says the jail was short staffed. >> the deputy that was attacked on april 12th, if there was another deputy there with him in the, the attack could have stopped a lot sooner. >> lombok calls the issue overtime. slavery saying the deputies are working an average of 28 hours of overtime each week, affecting their health and performance. but the sheriff says they have 16 hours of mandatory overtime each week, and any additional overtime is voluntary. >> it's like you have to work overtime to accomplish what the sheriff's department wants to accomplish. >> right now, our response times are the same. there's less staff responding, but people will always come to help people in need. >> last week, one of the inmates who was charged told us fights happen inside almost every day. things are so out of control at the jail that inmates are starting to get unruly, because

and four bay area stays made the top of the list. the guide issued a three key status to hotels that provide guests with a, quote, extraordinary stay. this tier included singlethread farm inn in healdsburg. it's noted as one of the most luxurious across california. silicon valley's canyon ranch woodside was praised as a forest hillside stay. saint helena's meadowood, napa valley also being honored, and rutherford's auberge du soleil was recognized for picturesque restaurant views as and. >> if you want to head to those locations this weekend, we have a pretty nice forecast coming our way. but at least for today, lots of clouds and even some scattered showers moving quickly across the bay areas. that was the key element just within the past few hours. you can see the weather model here showing you the rain up to our north and also out toward the sierra. they

will pick up some snowfall in the friday forecast, maybe 1 to 4in of snow in the lake tahoe area in the sierra. here's the radar showing you that rain band moving across the bay area earlier this evening. some lights and maybe some moderate cells. but right now you see the radar. this is the radar imagery. over the past few hours, things have been moving out of town and moving out to the south. as we expand the view, you can see this is all kind of linked up with this system up here, and this will continue to send in some clouds and some moisture for tomorrow morning. so that means we will have some drizzle and maybe borderline light rain first thing tomorrow morning near portions of the coast, and especially for the coastal hills as well, showing you the winds right now, there's a bit of a breeze out toward novato. winds gusting to 25 miles an hour, sfo westerly breeze at about 12 miles an hour, and san jose at about seven miles an hour. here's our shaky camera looking out toward the bay bridge. we will continue to hold on to the breezy to windy conditions as we move into your friday forecast, and current numbers have cooled off into the 50s, so lots of clouds tomorrow morning. drizzle

the chance of some light rain kind of borderline there and then into the afternoon hours. partly cloudy skies and gusty winds. temperatures in the upper 50s to the upper 60s. so here's that system kind of settling in for tonight and into tomorrow. once this moves on out, we will have clearing skies, or at least partly cloudy skies on saturday. and then on sunday a little bit of some warming. here's the forecast models. you can see some clouds, maybe some drizzle or some light rain showers. this is 7:00 and then into the afternoon hours. partly cloudy skies. let's keep an eye on this action to our to our east that drifts closer. that could boost the shower chances. but the main energy should be to the east of the bay area. highs for tomorrow will be in the upper 50s to the upper 60s. lots of clouds in the morning and then some gusty winds into the afternoon with some sunshine and the look ahead. your five day forecast. this system moves on out over the weekend. the timing is actually working out to nicely for us. it's not a major warm up, but a little bit of an uptick in the numbers for both

saturday and sunday and warming into next week. >> creeping in the right direction, going in the right direction. >> yeah, i feel bad for all the little league games that were canceled this month, so i think we'll have a nice forecast. sounds good. >> all right, mark, thank you. >> yosemite's famous bridal veil falls now has a new look at its base. the video here, posted by the yosemite conservancy, shows off some of the upgrades that are now in place. this makeover consists of new trails and viewing decks along with new bathrooms. the changes come just in time for the busy summer season. the yosemite conservancy, a nonprofit organization, led the project upgrade. it was funded by donors and broke ground back in 2018. >> members of california native american tribes and advocates for the fishing industry are heading to sacramento tomorrow. the group plans to rally outside the state epa building in opposition to proposed new water rules. the organizers say the agreements will not provide the amount of water that salmon need to return to streams where they spawn. this comes as the salmon fishing season in california has

oaks teammate at arizona state. icu excuse me, teammate at arizona state in 2019, a unique scavenger hunt kicks off in san francisco tomorrow. >> a coin collector and shop owner says he is planning to give away $10,000 worth of rare coins, hiding them all across the city. new tonight ktvu is amber lee spoke with the shop owner and has more on his mission to get more people interested in coin collecting, and it celebrates the opening of the bay bridge. >> so it's a bay bridge, half dollars, what they call it rare collectible coins, pieces of history made in san francisco. >> seth chandler, owner of winter coin in the city's marina district, is giving away a total of 11 coins five gold, five silver and one copper in what he calls a scavenger hunt that's open to the public. >> i thought of the idea of the place 11 different coins, all made in san francisco in 11 different neighborhoods, chandler says the value of the coins ranges from $250 to $2500

each. >> this $20 gold coin from 1915 and a penny made in 1909, are the two most valuable i just love coins. >> i've been collecting coins since i was four years old. you know, when you hold a round piece of metal that's 2 or 300 years old and you think about our founding fathers, or you think about the country where the coin was made in, you could really connect with history. this is national coin week, and chandler wants to get more people interested in collecting coins. san francisco is the king of coin cities. we're the only city in the country with three mints. >> a u.s. mint is still operating in the upper market area. it produces special edition commemorative coins. the first u.s. mint started operations in the financial district in 1854. it's now home to the san francisco historical society, a museum. the second u.s. mint building on fifth street is now a venue space. >> there is no artifact that even comes close to our coins to tell a story of a civilization. it tells so much about who we

are and what we are, and the us mint has done a good job. >> chandler says he and his staff have hidden coins in locations across the city, but that they will be giving out clues on social media each coin will be in a plastic bag, along with a card with information on how to contact his store with coin. >> we're encouraging people to bring it back here to our shop on lombard street. just because we want to meet them, we want to see how excited they are. maybe do a little bit of video on it. and most importantly, we want to educate them about their coin that they found. >> chandler tells me on friday at noon, he will post photographs on the company's instagram account with her coin to give clues as to where the coins are hidden. one hint think like a tourist happy hunting! amber lee ktvu fox two news. >> well, people getting ready to head to golden gate park this weekend will now be able to rent their own pair of skates. san francisco rec and park says new skate rentals will be launched on saturday. the rentals will be provided by dmg skate sports
