sheriff. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> and good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. a follow up tonight on a series of violent incidents at san francisco county jails. eight inmates have now been charged in connection with those alleged attacks on deputies that led to the jail lockdowns that we first reported on. our crystal bailey is here now with reaction tonight from the sheriff and the union representing deputies. crystal. >> well, the deputy thinks the union thinks that attacks on the deputies are a direct result of the mandatory overtime and understaffing. sheriff miyamoto says that even though they are only at 73% staffing, he does not think that's the issue. he blames overcrowding at the jails . he. and when we sat down with him today, he told me he is very glad that the district attorney is taking this seriously. >> i think it's really important to see that as a step towards accountability. >> and eight inmates are charged with the attacks on deputies at the county jails, the incidents

causing the sheriff to shut down the jails for several days. injuries include bumps to the head and bite marks by an inmate who was restrained. >> we have deputies that enforce the rules and deputies that don't enforce the rules, so the ones that enforce the rules are the ones that become the focus of people's anger or frustration. >> half of those charged were in jail on murder charges. three others had violent offenses like burglary and having a gun. >> we have to deal with making sure our staff are equipped, not just with, safety equipment, but also with the ability to de-escalate situations and deal with people anytime someone's exhausted or fatigued, it affects performance, it affects reactionary time, so all of this has an impact. >> ken lomba with the san francisco deputy sheriffs association says ten deputies have been injured in three weeks. in all ten cases, he says the jail was short staffed. the deputy that was attacked on april 12th, if there was another deputy there with him, the

attack could have stopped a lot sooner. lombo calls the issue overtime slavery, saying the deputies are working an average of 28 hours of overtime each week, affecting their health and performance. but the sheriff says they have 16 hours of mandatory overtime each week and any additional overtime is voluntary. >> it's like you have to work overtime to accomplish what the sheriff's department wants to accomplish. >> right now, our response times are the same. there's less staff responding, but people will always come to help people in need. >> last week, one of the inmates who was charged told us fights happen inside almost every day. things are so out of control at the jail that inmates are starting to get, unruly, because of the conditions that are going on at the jail. >> the sheriff says he is working on hiring more people. he also says he's hired a full time recruiter and is trying to recruit military members who might be interested in law enforcement.

>> heather. let's hope that they can beef up those staffing numbers. all right. thanks so much, crystal. a man is in the hospital on life support after his family says he was tased in the water by an east bay regional parks police officer. now, it happened at the martin luther king junior regional shoreline in oakland back on april 5th. authorities say that the suspect, deonte faison, is a convicted felon with a warrant. and when he was stopped by police, well, they say he jumped into a nearby body of water. and as he was trying to swim away, the family's attorney says an officer tased him in the back. >> at this point, we're not sure if my 34 year old brother is going to make it. and if he does, they are telling us that it definitely will not be the same. >> the family's attorney says officers acted improperly. the park district did not want to comment because of potential litigation in. well, we are following some developing news tonight as stanford university. this is where hundreds of people earlier today took part in a large pro-palestinian rally.

inside demonstrators marched right there on the main quad of campus. just as at mit, weekend events were kicking off. today's protest comes amid a wave of pro-palestine protests on college campuses nationwide. the students are calling for universities to divest from companies with ties to israel. some at the stanford rally pushed back against the criticism of these demonstrations. >> these protests are maybe, maybe slowly opening your eye to it. and if you really want to know what the students want, maybe, just maybe, try to talk to them, try to sit down on a table with them, maybe try to listen to their chants once and not think about it as just some mob that's trying to destroy your house. >> the stanford daily reports the university sent an email to students and community members yesterday reminding them of campus protest policies. campus officials said that violations

could lead to arrests. so far, though, we're told the event has been peaceful. meantime in berkeley, a student encampment remains outside the administrative building there on the cal campus. sky fox overhead that area earlier today, and you can see dozens of tents right in front of sproul hall. demonstrators here have the same demands, including that the university condemn the violence in gaza. uc berkeley says it has no plans to change its investment policies and practices. and so as far as the protest goes, well, the university says it does not plan to engage with the demonstrators unless there is a specific threat to public safety. and now we go to southern california, where usc today canceling its main graduation ceremony, which is scheduled for earlier, for later, excuse me. in may, amid the ongoing protests. well, things really escalated on the usc campus yesterday when more than 90 demonstrators were arrested. the university still plans to hold dozens of smaller graduation ceremonies, but

again, that main commencement next month will not happen. the university had previously canceled a speech by this year's valedictorian, who has publicly supported palestinian cause, citing safety concerns. and you can follow our coverage of the israel-hamas war, as well as the protests here in the bay area on our website at ktvu.com, as well as on the fox local app. new. at 730 tonight, state attorney general rob bonta is moving now to dismiss a lawsuit challenging the rollback of title nine under the trump administration. bonta says this comes as the biden administration has released a new final title nine rule that addresses the issues raised in the litigation by a coalition of states including california. so the new rule restores protections against sexual harassment and assault, and it provides protection against discrimination for lgbtq plus and pregnant or parenting students. two california representatives are pushing a federal bill to try to address

the home insurance crisis here in california. north bay representatives mike thompson and jared huffman gathered today in coffey park, a neighborhood in santa rosa that was devastated by the tubbs fire in 2017. the lawmakers discussed the disaster resiliency and coverage act that would provide financial federal financial assistance to make properties more disaster resistant. now, it comes as several insurance companies have pulled out of california. the representatives say this federal bill would make insurance more affordable and believe it is a promising solution. >> these tax incentives and the grant element of the legislation are going to be something that insurers will have to think about, and we call on the state of california to require insurance carriers to consider these things as they make their decisions about where to offer coverage. >> now, the bill was referred to the house committee on ways, ways and means last month, as well as the committee on transportation and

infrastructure. we'll be following the fate of that bill as well. i new at 730 tonight, santa rosa police are asking for help to find the owner of a violin. the department really didn't give a lot of information, but it does say that the property evidence team recently acquired this violin. and if anyone recognizes the instrument. well, you're urged to give the department a call. and if it is in fact yours, you will have to provide proof of ownership of this violin and an upgrade to a popular site at yosemite national park. and it has been a long time coming. we're going to give you a look coming up, plus a ticketing crackdown is coming to san francisco, but parking control officers are a bit on edge about it. >> and in barry weather. here's our live camera looking out toward the oakland estuary. some cloud cover, a bit of some everything here. cloud cover, some sunshine and some fresh raindrops on this camera lens. we're talking about a system moving in for this evening. check it out. this video, posted by the yosemite conservancy shows off the updates. the makeover consists of new trails and viewing decks, along with new bathrooms. the changes come just in time for the busy summer season. the yosemite conservancy, a nonprofit organization, led the project upgrade. it was funded by donors and broke ground way back in 2018. and it's finally done. let's bring in our meteorologist, mark tamayo. mark, have you have you been there before? oh yeah. i know you're a big fan of yosemite. >> oh, yeah. every summer we head to yosemite. and yeah,

what's interesting with the sierra this weekend? actually, tomorrow they can actually pick up some snow showers. >> that's wild. are we thinking about that? yeah. >> so adding a little bit to the snowpack. but overall it's kind of saying goodbye to winter. probably. yes okay. coming on board but yeah take a look at the numbers from today. we have been cooling off some 60s, even a few low 70s, but it has been a cooler pattern out there. san rafael 70, san jose 68 degrees. we're talking about the rain showers moving into northern california and also out toward the sierra. so this could include yosemite, mammoth and lake tahoe. this was the scene today in the lake tahoe area, and they will pick up some snowfall, maybe 1 to 4in and snow levels around 6500ft. now the bay area radar pretty interesting. just over the past hour or so. some more development with some rain showers out there moving in from the north. so you can see this is kind of linked up with some of the shower activity. for the most part, we're talking about dry conditions but earlier today. but look at this band coming on board moving in from the north and heading to the south. so here's some of the action right now. close it in on parts of the east bay from

hayward out toward oakland, right around the concord area, actually closer to the alamo area for this evening. so yeah, some rain showers making a comeback for this evening. and the winds also factor as well. napa right now, winds gusting to 33 miles an hour. sfo winds at about 16 in hayward gusting to 22 miles an hour. this is our live camera. i notice some windshield wipers over the past few minutes on the golden gate bridge here, so some light shower activity quickly moving in and quickly moving out across parts of the bay area. current numbers in the upper 50s to the 60s. tomorrow morning we're going to hold on to the cloud cover and the possibility of some drizzle or light rain. temperatures will be in the upper 50s, so this is the system we have been watching, this cooler, this cooler pattern moving in. we'll have some cloud cover tomorrow morning, some gusty winds and there is a chance of a few showers that could pop up later in the afternoon. but here we are tonight. of course, we're tracking the drizzle or maybe some showers and then into your friday morning. once again, we might have some wet roadways out there, especially near portions of the coastline. you can see some thunderstorms developing,

brand new piece of art will honor the late reverend cecil williams and his wife, janice mirikitani, san francisco's japantown task force, making the announcement earlier today. there will be a mural dedication ceremony for williams and his wife tomorrow at glide memorial church in the tenderloin. the legendary late pastor died on monday at the age of 94, while his wife died back in 2021, the task force says the two were extraordinary champions of the poor and vulnerable. that mural dedication takes place tomorrow from noon to four. san francisco police releasing plans to crack down on speeding the locations that have become hot spots and the plans being discussed at also the alameda county fair concert lineup is now out. the familiar faces that we'll see this year, then san francisco launching a new way to get around golden gate park. the rentals that will be available

two intersections in the city. the san francisco standard reports that officers will be monitoring nine intersections that have become hot spots for crashes. some include larkin and eddy streets, fulton and presidio park and park presidio, excuse me, and mission street in dubos avenue. police say speed is most often the factor where there is a deadly crash, and they hope their presence will help drivers slow down. also in the city, another ticket crackdown is planned for next month and parking control officers are nervous. ktvu tom vacar was at a rally today where the workers expressed concern about stepping up enforcement, putting them at further risk. >> 16 san francisco parking control officers say previous stepped up parking enforcement or fine increases have led to

increased threats and even assaults, making their work more dangerous without consulting them in advance, which puts a target on our backs. >> and, you know, it puts us in a in a precarious situation with the residents and the challenges that we face. >> it shouldn't just be a top down decision. it's not thoughtful at all. and that should not be how we govern. >> we still haven't gotten a date, an actual date when we'll be doing that. >> officers also say drug addicted, mentally ill as well as unhoused people add to their dangers. that's especially true in these unarmed officers are being directed to ticket people living in their vehicles during encampment removals, as well as having to enforce parking rules at open air drug markets, weapons and, you know, vicious animals. >> we encounter that on a daily basis. >> they already don't like us. so i feel like this extra enforcement is just going to make them have much more animosity towards us officers. >> schexnayder learned that after ticketing a car in front of its angry owner followed me

today in san francisco for the grand opening of china basin park. the new space is right near third and terry, a francois street right across from oracle park. this is a five acre expansion that anchors the mission rock development along the waterfront. mayor london breed was there to welcome the new park, partners with the san francisco giants, say the space is already engaging the community. >> the adage goes, if you build it, they will come. and this is actually been true for china basin park. it's been open for two weeks and we've seen dogs, dog, parents, bikers, kids playing in the sand. we've even seen our first bride and groom take photos in the park. >> organizers also teased the park's first event that will be free to the public, telling people to mark their calendars for may 11th. i've already taken a run on that trail and it is beautiful. all right, the list of top high schools is out. the number of bay area compa es

california, us news and world report did the rankings and lowell high school in san francisco came in seventh, followed by pacific collegiate charter in santa cruz, lynbrook high in san jose and doctor tj owens. gilroy early college academy. the rankings were based on several factors, including

college readiness, test scores and graduation rates. the alameda county fair has released its full concert series lineup, and it includes some big name performers. bay area hip hop legend e-40 will be among the featured performers. he's set to take the stage on june 20th. it is the second year in a row that he's headlined at the fair. there will also be performances by new edition member johnny gill, country singer ashley cooke and the rock band the fray. tickets are on sale now. the fair runs from june 14th through july 7th and new at 730 tonight. people heading to golden gate park this weekend will now be able to rent your very own skates. san francisco rec and park says new skate rentals are launching on saturday and will cost about $20 an hour. the rentals will be available from 11 to 6 on both saturdays and sundays at skating place, located on the jfk promenade, right there near sixth avenue. now you have the option to choose between inline skates or roller skates. the
