embattled alameda county district attorney pamela price holds a virtual town hall on public safety. >> this is ktvu fox two news at 730. >> and good evening, everyone. i'm heather holmes. we begin tonight with a tragic passing of an oakland police officer, jordan wingate. his death comes after a 2018 crash while on duty, where he was seriously injured. ktvu crystal bailey tonight talking to wingate's father, who is a retired opd captain. crystal. >> well, he tells me as a little boy, jordan wingate always wanted to be a police officer and just a couple years into serving his community, that fateful day in 2018 took him off the streets and left him in a state of limited consciousness. his family says his body gave out all these years later, and they spent the last few days with him in hospice. but his family prepares for his memorial service later on this week. they also want him to be remembered and honored for his service. oakland police officer jordan

wingate is remembered as a dedicated public servant. >> it's encouraging to see somebody his age that was so determined, that was just absolutely committed to service saturday morning. >> this procession marked the end of watch for the young officer after he spent more than five years fighting for his life. law enforcement was in his blood as the son of a decorated retired oakland police captain, randy wingate, jordan joined opd as a cadet straight out of high school in 2013 and later was named valedictorian of his police academy class in 2017, graduating on his birthday, may 19th. his father, having the honor of pinning him during the ceremony. >> everybody thinks that jordan followed in my footsteps, but there's a lot of jordan and part of jordan that's, you know, still, his heart still actually has a lot to do with his godfather, his godfather, opd detective willie wilkins, who died in the line of duty back in 2001, shot by friendly fire. officer wilkins was my best

friend. well, still is my best friend. we went to the academy together in august of 2018. >> at just 23 years old, jordan was severely injured on duty in a traffic crash. he was rushed to highland hospital. >> they said the likelihood of him surviving was very slim, but between the doctors and nurses, they just they kept them alive for nearly six years. >> jordan was in a state of limited consciousness, able to hear and see his family praying, holding his hand and keeping hope alive for a full recovery. as jordan's family makes preparations and the entire community mourns the loss, wingate says he's especially proud of jordan for being a fighter. >> his mom and i had to go, you know, pick out his casket yesterday and his gravesite and, you know, these are things that parents, you know, you should be doing this for your parents and your parents shouldn't be doing it for you. >> what his father will remember most is his smile and how he used his heart to police. >> the most important part of being a cop by far is talking to

people. i think that was probably his biggest accomplishment was, you know, was just he was a people person, you know, he just loved people. >> now, officer jordan wingate's memorial service will be held friday morning at 11 at three crosses church in castro valley. heather now quite a remarkable young man, and as his father said, quite the fighter. >> all right, crystal, thank you. tonight, people in san francisco, in the bay area are remembering the lasting impact of reverend cecil williams, the pastor of san francisco's glide memorial church, died yesterday at the age of 94. earlier today on the four, we spoke with his longtime friend, former san francisco mayor willie brown. brown said that reverend williams spirit of generosity and service came along with a gift for delivering his message with a sense of joy and community. >> cecil didn't just offer free meals, cecil knew exactly how to have people come to cecil's chapel and proceed to enjoy themselves, and in some cases,

cecil was actually doing the serving, and cecil did the kind of serving of food he would like to eat and became dramatically different. and believe me, i suspect it established for all of the nation how you do free food to people who need it. >> willie brown said that he expects glide will stay strong into the future with that guiding influence to draw on, east bay congresswoman barbara lee said today that she, too is deeply saddened about the death of williams, adding, quote, the reverend changed the lives of millions through radical love, support, inclusivity and a commitment to service to the most marginalized. when he arrived at glide memorial church in the 1960s, the congregation numbered 35 people. during the last 50 years, he transformed it into a world renowned congregation and nonprofit. san francisco mayor london breed today proposing a new plan that

she says will cut down on crime in the tenderloin. breed's proposal would require businesses that sell prepackaged food or tobacco products to close from midnight to 5 a.m. supporters say the late night businesses act as a hub for illicit activity, but businesses that operate around the clock say they have to work late into the night to make ends meet, and they say they're providing food and sundries to a community in need. if the legislation passes, the new hours would not be enforced by police. but other than warnings by police, other than warnings, any business that violates the proposed new hours would be fined up to $1,000 by the department of health. new at 730 tonight, a north bay judge handed down a sentence for former instructor as santa rosa junior college for having a gun there on campus. 74 year-old michael kenneth byers had pleaded not guilty after his arrest last fall. two students told campus police that they saw him with a semiautomatic pistol. now it is illegal to have a firearm on any school or college

campus here in california. he was sentenced to 180 days in jail, but is eligible for work release or house arrest. he was also sentenced to two years probation on. and now to the ongoing crime concerns in oakland. and a downtown restaurant was just broken into for the fourth time. our crime reporter, henry lee, spoke with that disappointed owner who says there's just no winning. >> it's everything. it's crying, it's rage, it's anger, it's frustration. it's defeat. >> raw emotions for imani greer, the chef and owner of vegan restaurant roasted and raw at 14th and jefferson in downtown oakland, he's moved several times. but for greer, this is the fourth time his business has been hit. >> it's a very defeating feeling to just try so hard every day, you know? and even as a leader, it's like you don't have time to grieve. >> the most recent break-in happened at about 430 monday morning. >> a couple guys, young guys, broke in, they basically hit the glass and then they just go, like the same. it's almost a

routine. >> a similar burglary happened in march, just as the restaurant was celebrating record lunch sales, and the restaurant's been hit twice before that. the common thread. >> unfortunately, these are all four of our break ins have been young black males. they have been my own, my own people. and it's heartbreaking. >> greer doesn't blame police or politicians, but says it begins in the home and in the schools. >> this is an oakland problem. it's not city hall's fault. it's everyone's fault. we all need to step up and do something. >> greer says he has no choice but to stay put. >> just because you get broken into a few times doesn't mean you can just up, pack up and leave. you're stuck into a lease that that if you leave, you're going to have to deal with an eviction court. >> we all are implicated in society's failures right now. either you're a part of the problem or you're a part of the solution. >> we ran into oakland city council member carol fife as she picked up a breakfast sandwich. she's a regular customer in the restaurant is in her district. >> california is a difficult state to live in, but that does not give you the right to hurt

other people to make sure your needs are met. >> greer had this message for the burglars hold yourself accountable. >> grow. just because you were raised a certain way, or weren't raised a certain way just because you come from a certain area, we can change. we can improve. there are jobs out here. >> oakland police are asking anyone with information about any of these break ins to give them a call in oakland. henry lee, ktvu, fox two news, local leaders and community organizations celebrated the groundbreaking today of a new affordable housing tower near lake merritt in oakland. >> one, two. three. >> go! >> when it's completed next year, the building will have 91 apartments and includes studio one, two and three bedroom units. 23 apartments will be set aside for people who are formerly homeless. families living here must make no more than $95,000 a year per household. >> people who work in retail, people who work in our emergency services. our hope is that some of our teachers will end up responding to the opening of the waitlist.

he says. the body was found just bere 1030 this morning on a grassy embankment along northbound highway 242near the clayton road exit. so far, there is no word on whether if it's a man or a woman, if the death appears suspicious or just how the person may have died. new at 730 tonight, a bill authored by a san francisco lawmaker decriminalize using psychedelic substances cleared a key hurdle today. senate bill 1012 was coauthored by state senator scott wiener. it would allow adults 21 and older to use certain psychedelic substances in a regulated context, and under the supervision of a licensed and trained facilitator . the bill passed the senate public safety committee and now heads to the senate appropriations committee. the bill has more restrictions than the one that was vetoed last

fall by governor newsom. that allowed possession of psychedelics. here it is a tuesday evening. and, mark, you said that some changes were on the way and you were not getting and it wasn't just a little minor change. >> no, it was a big shift in the temperatures. yeah, big, maybe 15 to 20 degrees cooler across parts of the bay area. so if you're looking for the heat. yeah, it's not here. it's a travel summer. this cooler powder wants to stick around. as you can see, temperatures cooled off today for your tuesday and still more cooling for wednesday and thursday. and the possibility once again of some drizzle making a comeback. take a look at the highs from this afternoon. no more 80s, no more 70s. we're just showing you some 50s and some 60s across the board here. and pretty much the same story as we move into your your forecast tomorrow. you see this nice circulation out here in the pacific. and it's kind of ushering in the low clouds across a good portion of the bay area earlier today. here's the satellite imagery and some some lightning to check that up in northern california over the past few hours, solid cloud cover out there, some breaks in the clouds, but we are expecting the overcast to fill in overnight. we also have some

breezy conditions. it's that cool wind out there. oakland airport winds at about 18 miles an hour. sfo currently winds gusting to 26 miles an hour in hayward, gusting to over 20 miles an hour. here is our live camera. we're looking at some cloud cover, but also a nice little defined break in the cloud cover, so we'll take that as we head into your tuesday evening. current numbers have cooled off into the 50s for santa rosa, concord, though 61 and san jose checking in 61 degrees for the 7:00 hour tomorrow morning. mostly cloudy skies and the possibility of some drizzle. so maybe some wet roadways, especially near the coast and right around the bay shoreline temperatures will start off the day in the upper 40s to the 50s. so what happened today? well we were tracking this system offshore here, drifting closer to our coastline line. that ushered in a ton of moisture. so as a result, there's no big changes. the clouds and the drizzle, especially for tomorrow morning. and then there's another system. another cool system wants to move in from the north on thursday. so we're going to

bring in more clouds on thursday. and there's about a 20 to 30% chance of some showers by thursday afternoon. thursday night that could linger into a friday. it's not a major system at all in parts of the bay area. could remain completely dry. so here we go. tomorrow morning. this is 7:00. lots of clouds in place. and this is 4:00, partly to mostly cloudy skies into your thursday. you can see once again, we're going to serve up the clouds once again for the thursday morning commute. and then by thursday afternoon you can see a little bit of activity. so maybe a few sprinkles or light shower into friday. the bulk of the shower activity will be to the north and to the east of the bay area. that does include the sierra, but close enough. we do have to hold on to that shower chance into your friday. take a look at the numbers for tomorrow afternoon. still on the cool side? bundle up. forecast highs in the upper 50s out toward the coast. lots of 60s out there. the warmest locations could be close to 70 degrees. still, the cooling will continue into your thursday. we'll keep an eye on that chance of a sprinkle or a light shower later in the day. thursday thursday night and into friday. the weekend should be

cities in the last year, including in albany, berkeley, antioch and concord. alameda county district attorney pamela price held a virtual town hall meeting focused on public safety, and she was asked about the perception by many people that there is no accountability for people committing crimes in the county. >> there is no less accountable happening in oakland or alameda county than was happening under my predecessor. actually, the data that we have now been able to compile and to release shows that while we are receiving fewer police reports, we're prosecuting people at the same level as my predecessor. >> and so price said that she is committed to making changes and creating a justice system that is fair for everyone. meantime, the push is on to set a date for a special recall election for price. the group save alameda for everyone or safe held a rally today in oakland outside the county administration building. they say the board of supervisors should have started

the process at its meeting last tuesday and that under the county charter now have until april 30th to set a date. the group estimates that the election will take place in august. now we go to san jose tonight, where city leaders there outlined the results of the local license plate camera program. san jose mayor matt mahan led the news conference in the plot to arroyo neighborhood, where a new camera was being installed at the time. he said the network of cameras has helped to recover $2 million worth of stolen vehicles in 2023 alone, he said. suspects with ghost guns, drugs and stolen packages have also been apprehended thanks to those cameras. all right, get ready to celebrate, because this santa rosa tradition. excuse me, is back from a five year pandemic hiatus. coming up, details on the luther burbank rose parade and festival. and then coming up later tonight on the 10:00 news. tech giant oracle is moving its headquarters once again. where and why? the company is
