anthony davis in his face. game winner yeah at the buzzer. nuggets win 101 99. it's a heartbreak for la who has now lost ten straight to the nuggets. and they lead the series two games to none. game three thursday back in los angeles. >> got it all right all right jason thank you. next at 11. >> i mean people kind of are shocked. people have, you know, burst into tears. it it's a sudden and a stark grief. >> tonight, the city of san francisco, remembering the life and legacy of reverend cecil williams, a man who fought for racial equality for the poor and homeless, opening his door to all the 11:00 news on ktvu. fox two starts now. cecil williams died at home today. the 94 year old was the foundation of glide memorial church in san francisco's tenderloin for 60 years. good evening everyone. >> i'm mike mibach and i'm julie

julie haener williams is being remembered for his wisdom and compassion and as a major support to the community. ktvu is betty yu joins us now in studio with a look at the legacy he leaves behind. betty. >> julie. for more than half a century, williams was a revolutionary reverend. he was considered the backbone of glide and arguably san francisco's most influential religious leader. >> i see soul ktvu last caught up with williams on christmas eve at glide signature holiday celebration, where volunteers serve thousands of those less fortunate. >> that afternoon in the tenderloin glides holiday jam benefit concert in november celebrated the 94 year old, who retired earlier last year as ceo of the foundation. this is just the beginning. every day is the beginning. >> every hour is the beginning. >> williams became pastor of glide in 1963. >> what we see is a people that needs love, a people that need

also to say to each other, i care. i will be with you. i'm not going to give up on you. >> ktvu sat down with williams five years ago under his leadership, glide memorial church grew to 10,000 people and the tenderloin church became world famous leaders, including warren buffett, nelson mandela, oprah, maya angelou, barack obama and hillary clinton met with williams as he fought for racial equality and lgbtq rights. he did so alongside people like angela davis and the black panthers. the church became a safe haven during the aids crisis and provided hiv screenings. williams dedicated his life to helping people who were hungry or homeless or battling drug addiction. i reach out to people all over the world. >> i'm not afraid of anybody. i'm just i care. >> glide's foundation is the largest provider of social services in san francisco.

williams ran the church with his wife, janice mirikitani, a poet, activist and first glide president. she died in 2021, the one that took me and said to me, i'm going to make you a better human being, williams said. glide's foundation and legacy is love, which leads to liberation, justice and freedom. >> cecil williams, he's always into something. he's always doing something. my theology basic is it's in the doing. >> williams said in his final note to the glide community last year that he will always remain connected to it, even as he took time to focus on his family and his health. he certainly always saw the dignity and humanity in everyone. >> truly a mentor for generations of san franciscans, and maybe something a lot of people may not know at home is a little bit of a sense of really. >> yeah, he was humble and he

touched so many lives. he will be greatly missed. all right, betty, thank you. thanks. well, reaction to the death of reverend williams continues to pour in tonight. glide memorial church in san francisco held a celebration honoring his life. ktvu is amber lee spoke with members of the church who say his death is a major loss to many for the sake of my life, the voices of the glide ensemble rang out in the church sanctuary in san francisco's tenderloin, just hours after its visionary founder and pastor, cecil williams, died monday afternoon. >> a man known for giving a voice and extending a helping hand to those who need it the most. >> this man of joy, this man of second, third and fourth chances. >> a brief ceremony honoring williams, led by glide senior pastor marvin white, who was chosen by williams himself to help carry out his legacy of serving the community. white described williams as a mentor. if you're not a church of action, then you're not doing

the work. >> he did it with the idea that glide would become the center of the city for marginalized people. >> former san francisco mayor willie brown described himself and his longtime friend williams as the preacher and the politician. he says he was also williams attorney. when williams was arrested for civil rights demonstrations. >> cecil has established for all of us what community service really means. >> i was suicidal, tatiana tilley, a glide choir member, says. >> williams opened up his heart and church to her and other members of the lgbtq community. when most organized religion rejected them. >> i found home. we sing a song called the sit at the welcome table. there's a space, there's a place for you. and he meant it. >> cecil for 50 years has been

one of the cornerstones of the city. he really didn't have any critics. >> we will be clapping our hands for the next few weeks, months and years in celebration of his life, pastor white extended the hours of the sanctuary through friday to give community members a space to mourn and celebrate william's life. >> glide is still working on the details for a public memorial service in san francisco. amber lee ktvu, fox two news new at 11 the governor's office announced that the state is distributing nearly $192 million to help the homeless move from encampments into housing. >> nearly $55 million of it will go toward eight projects throughout the bay area in oakland and santa cruz, as well as san mateo, marin and monterey counties. the money will go toward a wide range of housing options, including vouchers, rv housing sites, and the construction of new permanent housing units. >> today, the u.s. supreme court

heard arguments in a groundbreaking case on homelessness. the justices will decide whether cities can fine or arrest people for sleeping in public spaces. the cases from grants pass, oregon, where people face escalating penalties for sleeping outside with a lack of shelters, a federal appeals court classified the law as cruel and unusual punishment. in san francisco, children are among those living out on the streets. homeless advocates are now calling on city leaders to prioritize families seeking shelter. today, the board of supervisors hosted a hearing on child homelessness, and supervisor asha sapphire says many of the families are immigrants and asylum seekers living under gas station roofs and inside vehicles. >> this is not a conversation about those that are drug addicted or mentally ill. this is really about families with children that are suffering on our streets. they're part of our school system. they're contributing to our economy. they're working families is they're just not getting

adequate shelter. and or the resources that we have to be able to house them in our city. >> the supervisor says they're still working on solutions, but right now they're looking at ways to increase shelter spaces and voucher programs. >> new at 11. the state department of corrections and rehabilitation will start measuring the effectiveness of parole programs following an investigation, calmatters found that the state has spent more than $600 million on a program to help rehabilitate parolees. but the state did not collect data to show how many actually found jobs or if they went back to prison. the department relies on four contractors to run the program who subcontract with nearly 200 private companies, community organizations and nonprofits. also new at 11 cal poly humboldt announcing campus will be closed until wednesday after protesters barricaded themselves inside siemens hall. the university released this alert to all students, staff and faculty on campus, saying the university is deeply concerned about the safety of protesters

who have barricaded themselves inside the building. the university is urgently asking that the protesters listen to directives from law enforcement to peacefully leave the building. in-person classes and activities will be transitioning to remote where possible. >> the jewish holiday of passover started tonight at sundown in san francisco. chabad of the neighborhood synagogue hosted a passover seder. it's a ritual feast to mark the beginning of the holiday, we spoke with the rabbi, who says they are paying tribute to the hostages captured by hamas by filling seats rather than keeping them empty. >> instead of bringing less people, we go around giving these two boys from brooklyn. you can't see on the camera. they, they went around giving out masa wrapping, filling and inviting people to the seder. and that's, that's how we're remembering and keeping the hostages in our minds. >> rabbi levin says they did have extra security tonight as a precaution. passover is meant to symbolize freedom and commemorate the biblical story

it begins tonight's west coast rap. the los angeles police department says the stabbing appears to be completely unprovoked. it happened around 5:00 this morning. the victim was a woman in her 50s. police say she was stabbed on the platform as she was leaving the train. she was taken to the hospital where she later died from her injuries. >> in arizona, a man's foot got caught in a party bike after an accident in scottsdale. a bouncer at a bar jumped in to help the man, saying his foot was left barely intact. the incident happened over the weekend in old town scottsdale. the bouncer is also a former firefighter and veteran says he quickly took off his belt and turned it into a tourniquet for the man's leg. scottsdale police say the man's foot slipped on the pedal and got caught in the tires of the party bike, and in montana, a federal jury found bnsf railway contribute to two deaths in a montana town where decades of asbestos exposure sickened thousands. >> a jury awarded $4 million

each in compensatory damages to the estates of the two plaintiffs, who died in 2020, the jurors said. asbestos contaminated vermiculite that spilled into the rail yard in the town of libby, montana, was a substantial factor in the plaintiffs illnesses and eventual death. attorneys for the plaintiffs did argue the railroad knew the spill was dangerous and failed to clean it up. and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs 7:00 monday through friday, or you can find a round the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. new tonight a community in the east bay is mourning the death of a former police officer and high school sports coach. >> deputy tobin boulter was shot and killed in idaho. boulter was in ada county sheriff's deputy making a traffic stop when he was killed. >> ktvu zac sos reports about boulter's life growing up right here in the bay area. >> all the chiefs and sheriffs that have reached out. it's not just our community here. it shows what kind of a state we

live in. >> hours after the ada county sheriff's office in idaho tearfully announced the death of deputy tobin boulter, slain in the line of duty saturday, the news quickly spreading to the east bay community where he grew up. >> it's still a shock, you know, to learn of the news of tobin passing. we loved him. >> we loved his family, nicholas harris, the principal of berean christian high school in walnut creek, where deputy boulter graduated in 2015 and later returned to coach the school's cross country team with his wife, maddie. his yearbook graduation page listing police officer as his dream job. >> when you think of tobin, you think i mean the first word that comes to mind is servant. you know, someone who wants to serve. and so to be in public service, you know, looking out for the benefit of others, you know, that made sense for him on saturday, will the 27 year old deputy was out doing that very job. >> he was shot by a driver. he pulled over for a traffic stop and we're devastated to say he

did not survive his injuries and he passed away moments before this press conference before joining the sheriff's office in january, deputy boulter spent several years as a pleasant hill police officer. the department posting a tribute to him on their facebook page, noting that during his time there he, quote, came to work and entered the streets. always with a smile. walnut creek police, where he trained as a cadet, also honoring his memory. back at berean christian high. a flag at half staff. >> it's been a challenge today. >> justin wade, deputy boulter's former teacher and mentor. >> as a track coach, he would come straight from his duty as a police officer in his uniform, full uniform and do track practice. and i think that just is a sign of his dedication and it is our understanding that deputy boulter's family are now en route to idaho. >> as for the suspect believed to have been behind this shooting, he was later shot and killed by police in walnut creek , zac sos. ktvu fox two news.

that left one person injured. this is video from citizen app. deputies say they were called to appian way near kalina way. this was 1020 last night. they found the gunshot victim being treated at a nearby fire station.

deputies, along with the richmond police department and chp search for the gunman. but were not able to locate him. >> hundreds of people stood in line tonight at san jose's burger pit to say goodbye by the restaurant chain is shutting down its last restaurant on blossom hill road after more than 70 years in business. the line of customers wrapped around the building. longtime owner paul burger says his father started the business with his partners in 1953, and since then they have operated 26 locations throughout the bay area, starting on first street in san jose. >> oh, he would be very proud, especially when he sees this line around the building. and we're going to run out of everything tonight. >> burger is 75 years old, he says. after decades of serving the community and with the cost of his lease continuing to rise, he decided it was time to retire . >> well, our warm weather stretch about to come to an end. we're talking about a pretty

noticeable drop off in the numbers for tomorrow, and more low clouds and fog, so it has been nice over the past 2 to 3 days. take a look at the numbers from this afternoon, where you can see some 80s out toward livermore and antioch, some 60s for san francisco and oakland and san jose in the lower 80s. here is the overall trend, though. as you can see with temperatures we cooled off today, especially coast side. but the cooling, the widespread cooling expected tomorrow, wednesday and into thursday. so here is your tuesday forecast. more low clouds tomorrow morning. partly sunny and breezy and temperatures close to 50 degrees tomorrow morning. eventually back up into the 60s and maybe a few neighborhoods right around 70 degrees tomorrow afternoon. but some changes today coastside and right around the bay. we had that cooler onshore breeze that returned and that is also ushered in the fog. so right now we have low clouds near the coast and some some patches already pushing back into the bay, some breezy conditions out there as well, and a few neighborhoods you could see vacaville gusting over 20 miles an hour. oakland airport, southwest wind at about 15 miles an hour and out toward

sfo. half moon bay winds at about 12 to 14 miles an hour. here is our live camera looking above san francisco tonight, and we will cloud things up first thing tomorrow morning. current numbers. most areas have cooled off into the 50s for santa rosa, concord, and in san jose. tomorrow morning we'll have some gray out there, some pockets of fog and temperatures to start things off tomorrow morning in the upper 40s to the 50s. and here's the forecast model picking up on that idea about 7 or 8:00. and then into the afternoon hours, partly sunny skies and temperatures, lots of 60s and no 80s that we're thinking just the warmest locations close to 70 degrees. here's the pattern change. this area of high pressure is moving on out. we're tracking this cooler system offshore, so that will send temperatures down for says tuesday and wednesday. but basically right on through friday. and by later in the week, there's the possibility we could have a shower chance back in the forecast. and right now, the thinking would be thursday night and into friday morning, but definitely some more clouds, some breezy conditions and some

cooling and temperatures. highs for tomorrow. lots of 60s, a few 70s sprinkled on the maps here. and as we take a look, take a look at the five day forecast temperatures. no major warm ups to speak of. lots of clouds for your wednesday. mostly cloudy skies on thursday, a shower chance in a friday. it's kind of a 5050 deal. we're not exactly sure just yet. and the weekend looks like a sun cloud mix, so a big turnaround after the big turnaround weather. >> just getting used to it. >> i know me to go the other way. >> it was a nice little deal for us. it was a quick one. >> all right. thank you. thanks, mark. >> a un report on extinction estimated that a million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction. within decades, scientists say saving some of them is possible, but the number is overwhelming. ktvu is tom vacar shows how the oakland zoo in california have now become leaders in preventing extinction. the oakland zoo is not just a place to see exotic animals, but a sanctuary full of rehabilitated animals not able to be returned to the wild. >> it's been 54 years since the

endangered species act was introduced. >> we met oakland zoo ceo nick degiorgio on the california trail that winds through 56 acres of california's native animals and plants black bears, bison, bald eagles, mountain lions. the oakland zoo has long been and remains a major partner of the california condor recovery program, a consortium of zoos, organizations, agencies, scientists, and citizens. >> there were 22 of them left in the wild back in the 1980s, and that was it. >> they have brought the condor back from the very edge of extinction. >> so today we have over 500, both in human care as well as in the wild. >> here you'll also see grizzly bears that once roamed free in california long ago, 2024 is the 100th year of this bear not being in existence, extirpated from our state. the first gray wolf returned to california in

2011. it had been 100 years prior to that, and now we have multiple different packs. even jaguars once roamed california. >> this is our natural history here in california. >> the zoo is also part of the worldwide gene pool to help keep many species alive. >> as a zoo, we can play an important role in that. >> other californians have succeeded in bringing the sea otter back from the brink, but the california tiger salamander, coho salmon, sea san joaquin kit fox, the kangaroo rat, and the western snowy plover could become extinct. sadly, even the slow moving mojave desert tortoise is speeding to extinction as well. if we can't save many species headed for extinction, the zoo director believes we can do much better. >> long terme, have faith, in democracy, where you can vote for the people who are going to represent the values that that you want. >> earthrise shot from apollo

adelphia, where the students spoke at an education conference . the students from the academy of knowledge school traveled with their teacher, lawrence tan, earlier this month. they delivered a presentation on their research on the quality of education in underserved communities. they also talked about how schools can create a more equitable landscape for students of color. earlier today on the four, we spoke with the teacher, mr. tan, and the students about their project. >> our experience with the wypa project. it was very stressful and challenging, but, at the end it was very worth it. and i want to speak for all of the students , we felt very proud of ourselves because we felt like we helped the schools for, students and families of color. >> the students teacher says the kids worked all through spring break on that research project. so he says they were prepared when they presented their work
