six. >> and good evening, everyone. i'm mike mibach and i'm julie julie haener, san francisco mayor london breed touched down at san francisco international airport this afternoon, back from her weeklong trip to china. now, the goal of that trip to advance economic and cultural ties, including bringing more flights into sfo and some panda diplomacy. ktvu is ellsworth live tonight in the newsroom with the story. >> alice. that's right. mike. the mayor's visit to china included a delegation that accompanied her to renew relationship with china that can help bolster san francisco's economy at the airport, the zoo and throughout our bay area region. coming through customs at the international terminal, mayor breed came bearing gifts stuffed panda bears and a replica airplane from air china, one of three airlines she hopes will start coming to sfo. >> we were truly successful in our trip. we had numerous meetings with government officials, with airlines and with business leaders. we held a business forum of people who have interest in not only doing

business in san francisco, but investing in san francisco. >> the mayor shared it was a promising trip, hoping to rejuvenate tourism from southern china, potentially boosting our bay area economy and bringing giant pandas here. >> we think that with increased flights with business opportunities, with pandas and all that, we're talking about the economic opportunities for san francisco can be significant. >> sfo airport manager doug yakel shared the mayor's visit could net millions in airline travel alone, with the hope that three airlines will commit to flying in and out of sfo. >> it's so powerful what it represents, not only for our airport but for local economies. we look at a single flight and i'm talking a daily flight between a foreign destination like china and the us to sfo, it can be upwards of $175 million in annual revenue, 1200 jobs to the bay area total. so and that's just one flight. >> currently sfo sees flights to and from china at 50% of

pre-pandemic levels. >> that's why visits and missions like this are so important to us, because as this bilateral agreement allows for more flights between the us and china last week, while in beijing, agreements were signed to bring giant pandas to sf, the mayor spoke about her reaction to seeing the rare animals. >> it was the first time i actually saw a panda in person, and it was was amazing, mayor breed shared. >> there's still lots of paperwork and planning to do. no word on what it will cost just yet. >> we expect a pair of pandas and they are hopefully anticipated to come as soon as we're able to raise the resources, do all the permitting, continue to work with the wildlife and conservation group in beijing to facilitate all the appropriate paperwork. >> the mayor is enthusiastic for what this trip foretells for the future of the city and the region.

>> we know that there is a real demand. we heard it from tour operators who said we want more flights. we heard it from people who said, we want to come to san francisco. >> and mayor breed is hoping that next year at this time, we'll be welcoming more visitors coming through sfo, including folks from china and those cute fuzzy black and white giant pandas. back to you, julie. >> all right, alice werts reporting in the studio in the newsroom tonight. alice. thank you. city officials are now calling for an investigation into the san francisco zoo. this comes after a san francisco chronicle investigation last week outlining complaints raised by 20 current and former employees. they say they are concerned about safety for workers and the animals there. the investigation also uncovered a close call between a grizzly bear and a zookeeper, and the death of a young penguin, the chronicle reports. the city's joint zoo committee is calling for a full probe into the safety concerns, and plans to meet with the union that represents zoo employees. >> a dead whale has been spotted right off a beach in alameda. the california academy of

sciences first reported the whale last night off crown memorial state beach. the plan is for the u.s. army corps of engineers to and the us coast guard to tow the carcass to angel island state park for a necropsy. the whale was said to be an adult female gray whale about 40ft in length. this is the first reported dead whale in the bay area this year. >> homicide investigators in hayward are searching for clues in what appears to be a murder suicide. last night, they say a woman was found fatally shot inside a car parked on the west winton avenue. they also say a man in the driver's seat was found with apparent self-inflict gunshot wounds. witnesses tell police they heard the two arguing before the gunshots rang out. anyone with information on this case is asked to contact hayward police. >> and tonight, a stolen car suspect is in custody following a lengthy and damaging police pursuit on the peninsula. police say it was friday night when 35 year old laura kettle stole a stole a tow truck. officers spotted that truck at a jack in th box in san carlos. that's

where kettle slammed into sevel police vehicles as she eventually located the tow truck parked outside a home th she had burglarized. she then drove to a planet fitness in redwood city, where she assaulted her boyfriend. she was arrested soon after. police say kettle was out on bail from another domestic violence case. she has now been booked on several felony charges, one officer was injured and idaho sheriff's deputy, who was also a former pleasant hill officer, died today in a line of duty. >> 27 year old tobin boelter was welcomed to the pleasant hill police department back in 2018. he then moved to idaho, where he worked for the sheriff's office there in ada county. the sheriff says boelter was shot in boise last night during a traffic stop. a citizen witnessed that shooting and called 911. the witness then reportedly performed cpr until deputy boelter was transported to a hospital, but he died from his injuries this morning. boelter is the first deputy to die in

the line of duty in ada county. back here in the bay area, commuters who rely on the ferry from sausalito to san francisco will have to make other plans tomorrow. >> that's right. ferry service on that route has been suspended indefinitely because of a structural issue with the pier found during a routine inspection. ktvu is amanda quintana has more from sausalito. caution tape blocks off the pier in sausalito with a sign telling ferry goers all service is suspended because of a structural compromise. >> this is not good. this is not good. >> like bobby, many in the north bay use the ferry to commute to work in san francisco. now needing to change their monday morning plans. >> it's going to be a total drag. i mean, the ferry is, it's really easy. and for me, parking in the city is so expensive and just commuting. i love it just drops you off. and you're right, you know, you're right in the financial district. so is it like what you're going to do? i don't know, is it down? like,

are we not going to be able to use it for a while? >> the golden gate ferry says service is suspended until further notice, with no word on when it might return for tourists. >> it's a big deal. i mean, we get tons of tourists in sausalito that come in on the bicycles that take it back across the bridge. so yeah, just not a good thing. we get it figured out soon. >> these tourists from the uk missed out on the gorgeous view of the city from the water. luckily seen the signs yesterday and noticed that the ferry was off. >> so we thought all right, okay, we better get an uber over in the morning because we planned on getting the ferry over this morning. >> we asked the golden gate ferry about the damage and they wouldn't specify, but there is a crane now at the end of the pier. >> not a surprise at all. yeah, really not a surprise. maybe surprising that it took this long. >> adrian breton says the city of sausalito has had plans for more than a decade to update this area along with the pier, so hearing structural damage was found is not surprising. >> there's a plan to put in a new ferry dock this was built, i think, in 1996 and is

structurally deficient already, so we knew we had to replace it. and now obviously it looks like we've probably waited a little too long. so hopefully this increases the urgency to replace the ferry. >> golden gate transit busses took riders to san francisco over the weekend, but there hasn't been an announcement yet about bus service during the week in sausalito. amanda quintana ktvu, fox two news also in the north bay, a stretch of westbound 37 between sears point and vallejo is scheduled to reopen 4:00 tomorrow morning following a weekend closure. >> caltrans sending us this video of some of the work being completed this weekend. the westbound lanes will close yet again next weekend for the same repaving project, and the eastbound direction of 37 will be closed during the first two weekends of may. >> new at six tonight. the charles schultz airport in sonoma county is hiring more staff ahead of an increase in service next month, the press democrat reports. dozens more workers are being hired. before avelo airlines opened its new base at the airport may 1st, the airline already flies out of the airport but will double its

routes now to kalispell, montana. boise idaho. salem, oregon. and pasco, washington. less than a week later, american airlines will resume its seasonal service to dallas, switching from a smaller plane to a larger airbus jet. >> a group of demonstrators marched on the golden gate bridge today to promote a vegan diet. members of the san francisco vegan society say their goal was to encourage people to adopt a plant based diet to combat climate change. another goal to pressure local, state and federal leaders to endorse the international plant based treaty, which would in part end subsidies to meat and dairy industries. >> earth day is tomorrow. and so we wanted to take this opportunity to ask people in celebration of earth day to give veganism a try. it really is the very best diet for the planet. >> the plant based treaty is modeled on the fossil fuel treaty and seeks to halt the expansion of animal agriculture, move toward a plant based food system, and restore key ecosystems.

>> dozens of volunteers gathered today in san jose for a clean up project at the guadalupe river trail ahead of earth day tomorrow. they showed up at 930 this morning with trash bags ready to pick up litter and plastics. volunteers came from an international church's young adult service group, some of them coming in from as far away as roseville, a volunteer with the church tells us that environmental protection projects are one way they want to inspire and improve local communities. >> we're going to go along the trail and the banks and pick up all trash. we've heard there's sharp objects, so we want to make it not just a beautiful place, but a safe place for families, for children and for anybody who comes here rides their bikes or walks. we want to make it overall better. >> the group partnered with the city's beautify sj initiative on today's event. >> coming up, video showing good samaritans risking their lives to save a driver inside a burning vehicle, plus another push to remove a republican

along interstate 94, in saint paul, minnesota. one of the rescuers says he and others approached the vehicle and heard the driver yelling for help. he says the flames were so intense they were almost hitting them in the face. after several failed attempts at opening the door. a highway worker arrived on the scene and used a tool to shatter the window, allowing those good samaritans to pull the driver from that vehicle. the victim was not seriously hurt, but was taken to the hospital to be checked out in san francisco. >> the annual cherry blossom parade was disrupted by a group of pro-palestinian protesters. this happened this afternoon at laguna and post in japantown. the activists walked onto the parade route and unfurled a banner right in front of a convertible carrying state senator scott wiener. that banner read us japan. blood on

your hands. after about 15 minutes, the protesters dispersed and the parade continued in its route. the house of representatives approved a key foreign aid package over the weekend that will provide nearly $100 billion to ukraine, israel and others. >> but the bipartisan vote has now put speaker of the house mike johnson in hot water with some of his far right republican colleagues. fox news lucas tomlinson has more now from washington, dc. >> georgia congresswoman marjorie taylor greene, doubling down on her push to take down speaker mike johnson after his decision to bring a vote on aid for ukraine. >> mike johnson, speakership is over. he needs to do the right thing to resign if he doesn't do so, he will be vacated. >> but the political landscape is much different than the last time a speaker was ousted. many republicans appear fatigued by the party's hard right coalition, threatening the nuclear option when things don't go their way. >> when the motion to vacate is threatened every week in the congress that is being abused.

speaking on a podcast friday, congresswoman anna paulina luna said if a motion to vacate were introduced, two more gop representatives would resign, giving democrats a majority and likely making hakeem jeffries the new house speaker. >> despite that possibility, many democrats have actually come to johnson's defense. >> he did the right thing here, and he deserves to keep his job in the senate. >> the foreign aid bill faces some republican detractors, but still appears likely to pass. it provides about $26 billion for israel, $8 billion for taiwan and other us allies in the pacific and nearly $61 billion for military assistance for ukraine. >> they're going to have more weapons. but we also want them to have new weapons. atacms to knock the bridge down between crimea and russia. they're going to have f-16s, the new weapons coming to ukraine at the right time as russia's been gaining on the battlefield. >> it should have happened six months ago. the next best time

is right now. >> the senate could pass the bill as early as tuesday, and then it's over to the president's desk for his signature at the white house. lucas tomlinson, fox news. >> u.s. authorities are beefing up security around synagogues and other jewish gathering places ahead of passover tomorrow night. fbi director christopher wray warns the recent hostilities in the middle east could lead to attacks against jewish people here in the u.s, wray has ordered law enforcement agencies to add another layer of security around jewish facilities facilities across the country during passover. >> we at the bureau remain particularly concerned that lone actors could target large gatherings, high profile events, or symbolic or religious locations for violence. >> the fbi director says the number of hate crime investigations involving jewish people in the u.s. has tripled since the start of the war between israel and hamas back in

october, and wray is concerned that number could climb even higher due to recent military conflict between israel and iran. >> opening statements are scheduled to begin tomorrow in donald trump's criminal trial in the new york city. 12 jurors and six alternates have now been seated in the so-called hush money trial. the jurors will decide whether or not trump falsified his business records in an alleged effort to cover up a sex scandal during his 2016 presidential campaign. the former president has pleaded not guilty to 34 felony counts, the maximum penalty in this case is 20 years in prison. the issue of presidential immunity will come before the united states supreme court this week. the high court will hear arguments on whether former president trump can claim immunity for acts committed while in office. the case stems from trump's indictment over his role in trying to overturn the 2020 presidential election, and the supreme court also scheduled to hear arguments tomorrow in a landmark case on homelessness. it involves the small town of grants pass, oregon, and whether

people can be cited and fined for sleeping on the streets. the ruling is expected to have a major impact on how the bay area and the rest of the country deals with homeless populations. a lawsuit over homeless sweeps in san francisco is currently on hold pending a decision in this case, tomorrow will mark 20 years since the friendly fire death of army ranger pat tillman. >> tillman grew up in san jose and was a graduate of leland high school. he attended arizona state on a football scholarship before being drafted by the arizona cardinals. after the september 11th attacks, tillman gave up his nfl career to enlist in the army and join the elite rangers fighting force. tillman's death in afghanistan was initially covered up by the military. his family learned the truth of his death weeks later. pat tillman was 27 years old in southern california. more than a dozen people were injured after a tram crashed at the universal studios hollywood theme park. the los angeles fire department says the tram was taking people

to and from their cars in the parking lot. at about 9:00 last night, 15 people were taken to local hospitals for treatment. the l.a. sheriff's office says the driver indicated a mechanical failure caused that accident. >> one of the most recognizable symbols of san francisco's castro neighborhood is getting a facelift. the castro theater shared these pictures on social media, announcing work has started on restoring its iconic sign. the work comes during the theater's first phase of a $15 million project to restore and update the 100 year old theater. the restoration project will transform the movie theater into a multi-purpose venue. the project is expected to be complete by the summer of 2025. >> today, thousands of people in san jose enjoyed a long stretch of road without any vehicle traffic. a section of branham lane, monterey road and first street were closed to vehicles for viva kaiser! the event aims to bring communities together by encouraging people to walk, bike, skate and explore more. >> well, a beautiful weekend out

there. temperatures soaring, widespread 70s and some 80s. we have another nice forecast for tomorrow and then we're talking about a cool down. you'll definitely notice those changes as we head toward midweek. take a look at the highs from this afternoon. some 80s out toward concord, livermore and antioch. san francisco, close to 70 degrees. oakland in the mid 70s and san jose in the lower 80s. you can see the temperature trend. it's still fairly warm, primarily inland for tomorrow. and then on tuesday, wednesday and thursday we have that cooling trend and it looks like we're tracking some more clouds and maybe some shower chances later in the week. now for tomorrow for your monday earth day. some patchy coastal fog. it will be cooler out there. the last warm day inland. you can see the eventual temperature range by about 4:00 from the low 60s near the immediate coastline to the lower 80s, well inland. here is the satellite throughout the day, lots of clear skies, the fog. you have to look toward southern california for this afternoon so we have some low clouds closer to los angeles. this cloud cover could be approaching our coastline by tomorrow afternoon, and as a result, we will have a

temperature cool down near portions of the shoreline for your monday. and that will be the beginning of several changes that will that will ultimately send temperatures down. current numbers san jose 78. concord 82 degrees. santa rosa, novato and napa all in the 70s you can see the wind reports out there. a bit of a breeze out toward the oakland airport and sfo. we have winds at about 21 miles an hour. here's our live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge. we are in the clear this evening, so looking pretty good out there, but probably by this time tomorrow we will have some patchy fog trying to approach our coastline as far as overnight temperatures. we'll start things off at tomorrow morning. most neighborhoods in the 50s low to mid 50s for your monday morning, and maybe some scattered high clouds out there into the afternoon hours. this particular forecast model is trying to bring in some patchy fog near portions of the coastline, so partly cloudy skies for the beaches. low 60s there. lots of 70s and the warmest locations approaching at the lower 80s. so this guy, this area of high pressure has been

keeping us warm over the past couple of days. tomorrow is the last warm day inland. and then here's the change. by midweek this will send in more clouds and temperatures will be trending down for wednesday and thursday. then by thursday night and friday, there is the possibility we could have maybe some drizzle or a few showers back in the picture. so for just a chance for right now, a little bit fuzzy as we head toward the friday forecast. but here's that change as we head toward thursday. definitely some more clouds. and then by friday, some showers moving into northern california. and here in the bay area. we'll keep an eye on those chances as well. for cast highs for tomorrow. still some lower 80s out toward concord and livermore. san jose 79, san francisco 66. in santa rosa, 79 degrees. so patchy coastal fog it is warm inland temperatures are cooling off by tuesday. partly cloudy skies on wednesday. look at this. by midweek just some 60s out there. so no more. no more 80s, no more 70s. and then there's that chance of a shower by friday. the weekend looks like a sun cloud mix and temperatures could be trending up a little bit. but

at the ballpark in san francisco today as the giants. they were trying to win their four game series with the diamondbacks. first, 15,000 fans got logan webb, basketball jerseys, and these kids got some selfies with the man himself. fifth inning. giants down one. nothing. mike yastrzemski his first home run of the year, a two run shot into the arcade off slade. saccone and the giants lead 2 to 1. the d-backs, though they retake the lead 3 to 2. and in the ninth, nick avila appears to strike out kevin newman on a pitch in the dirt, but the ump says nope, newman got a piece of it. clearly he did not. so bob melvin is upset, and two pitches later, newman ropes one to left for an rbi double that brings home what would be the winning run. so melvin's rikhi ely not happy now. he gets tossed by home plate umpire stu shearwater, as does third base
