exactly excited about the news, some wondering why. now, as the library put it, quote, there is never a good time to close. >> it's a bummer. >> i'm sad that they're closing down the library. >> that is temporary. billy panama, one of the younger patrons of the main branch of the oakland public library. >> i hope that they make it better. >> that's the plan. at least starting may 27th, the downtown library shutting its doors until at least november for a, quote, critical repairs. >> it's great that they're doing renovations, but six months doordash edmond, who regularly uses the library with her son, not alone in wondering why so long staff say that's the time needed to complete all the work, including a new roof, boiler system and upgrades to the building's electrical, heating and cooling systems. >> my thought is it's necessary. i think that this is an older and authentic library. i've been coming here since i'm 60. i've been coming here since i was like four, and it's about time we did some renovations. >> brian compton also looking

forward to some more obvious esthetic improvements in store for the library. new lighting, flooring and ceilings. he just like to see one more area get a little tlc. >> the restrooms aren't horrible conditions. >> well, the work is underway. patrons will have to head to other branches. >> it's going to be hard. my son likes to come here all the time. it's peaceful, relaxing, you know, it's a very good resource for those who are doing studies and doing work projects. >> the library is fun to look at, new books and things that i haven't seen before. >> among the many reasons this library will be sorely missed over the next few months, but perhaps we all just need to look at the project the way panama is . >> sometimes it helps just to close things out for a little bit, just to like help it grow and make it better than it was before. >> yeah, wise young lady there. the library planning to fund the project through a variety of sources, including a $4.2 million grant from the state. if

all goes well, again, the library should be back open by sometime in november. in the meantime, staff say other branch libraries will be operational, including the asian library that is just around a half mile away from the main library. christina zac sos in our newsroom tonight. >> zach. thank you. well, tonight we are learning more about how oakland is planning to spend $7.2 million on homelessness. city officials say the money from the state will be used to resolve long standing encampments at two locations. those are at martin luther king junior way in 23rd street, as well as a camp at mosswood park and east 12th street. officials say those living in the camps will receive supportive services and offer temporary shelter. the money will also be used to convert a local hotel into a shelter. >> the aclu says. the alameda county sheriff's department has stopped sharing driver locations with police in other states. the information was shared using automated license plate readers, which collects driver locations including dates and times. the

aclu sought the change in response to strict abortion rules passed in other states, and the expected increases of women crossing state lines to seek the procedure. >> a emotions were running high tonight in alameda, where loved ones gathered for a vigil to honor mario gonzalez, who died in police custody three years ago. >> just last night, the alameda county district attorney's office charged three law enforcement officers in his death. ktvu jana katsuyama attended tonight's vigil and spoke with mario's mother. >> is a third year. my son died right here in this park. >> edith arenales has been coming to this park in alameda since april 2021, marking the death of her son, 26 year old mario gonzalez. >> it's not easy to be holding the pain, but on friday, this year's vigil came with new hope for his mother and family. >> alameda county district attorney pamela price announced thursday that her office was charging three law enforcement officers with involuntary manslaughter in connection to

gonzalez's death, a relief for his family. >> we always missing him in birthdays, you know, christmas and all the holidays. tomorrow is my birthday. but, this is my present today. >> body camera footage had shown gonzalez when the three police officers, eric mckinley, cameron leahy and james fisher, detained him. he later died at the hospital. the previous day had declined to file charges, noting gonzalez had meth in his system. an autopsy commissioned by the family blamed restraint, asphyxiation. >> when i first heard the news just yesterday, i felt really i was actually in tears. i think it's important for all families, really to kind of stay united as a front because we're like the voiceless community. >> we really appreciate y'all spending your afternoon with us. >> dozens of people came to friday's vigil dancing, praying and giving support to the family. >> i was surprised, but also relieved for edith and her family. >> we're a little disappointed that it's, you know, only

involuntary manslaughter and the maximum is four years. but like i said, it's just a little bit of justice for this family. >> i think it's a systemic issue that needs to be dealt with that way. and a few officers are unfortunately not going to solve that problem. >> gonzalez's mother had this message to the three law enforcement officers. >> i'm not going to say nothing, but for them, i feel bad for them. i believe in god, and i know, you know, you kill somebody, you for sure you're going to pay in different ways. so i want to say i forgive them for everybody, but i'm mother, you understand? >> yeah. >> jana katsuyama ktvu, fox two news, alameda county sheriff yesenia sanchez says she supports the findings by the department's independent investigation. >> released in 2022. it found no criminal wrongdoing by the officers in the death of mario gonzalez. she said in a statement. mr. gonzalez's preexisting medical conditions

and the level of toxicity of methamphetamine found in his system during the autopsy contributed to his death as apd officers tried to overcome his resistance. >> san francisco police are looking for a man who allegedly attacked an infant on a muni bus. a and baby were on a bus at van nee and o'farrell street just after 9 a.m. when they were approached. officers say the man physica assaulted e innt, then got off the bus and fled. fortunately, the baby was not seriously injured so far, no arrests have been made. also in san francisco, police detained a group of suspects, possibly tied to a series of car break ins. this was the view from skyfox. police say around ten this morning they detained the suspects near stanyan street and john f kennedy drive. an alert was then issued asking people to avoid the area. police say they believe the suspects are a part of a series of auto burglaries around san francisco. they did not release any more details about the case or, say how many suspects were detained. >> mayor london breed says she

wants to see more flights added between san francisco and china, though the u.s. airlines are currently opposing any increase, as the mayor has met with chinese airline executives to discuss support for additional flights. but last week, a trade group representing u.s. airlines lobbied the biden administration to hold off on approving additional flights between the two countries. the u.s. airlines claim they are at a disadvantage to chinese carriers because they cannot access russian airspace, but the chinese airlines can. the u.s. airlines and trade unions also accused the chinese government of anti-competitive practices. >> happening now in the north bay, all westbound lanes of highway 37 between vallejo and sears point are closed. a live look for you here. as crews have shut down this stretch of highway, of the highway a little over an hour ago as they're getting ready to work on a major repaving project, we know the detour is going to be a long one. >> it is over 45 miles, and we have an expectancy between an

was attacked. that story begins tonight's west coast rap. we want to warn you, some people might find this video disturbing . you talk to my daughter. police say that's hermenegilda marquez in pink, punching a 64 year old school bus driver and pulling her hair. court documents show marquez has accused the driver of saying things to her daughter is unclear. when marquez claims

those comments were made or what was said. the driver says she was working as a substitute when she was attacked on april 11th, and didn't know the suspect or her daughter. during marquez's first court appearance yesterday, prosecutors asked a judge to set bond at $25,000. >> miss marquez allegedly violently attacked a school bus driver. the attack occurred in front of children. there's a strong weight of the evidence there is a video of the assault. she has a prior misdemeanor assault conviction. there is a concern that she's a danger to the community, because she appears to have an inability to control her anger. >> the judge set bail at $5,000 and has ordered marquez to stay away from that bus stop. marquez. marquez is facing a charge of aggravated assault on a school employee, which is a felony. >> now to oregon, where fire damage will keep the state's famous timberline lodge closed until further notice. a fire broke out at the government camp resort where the shining was filmed late last night. guests

scrambled to evacuate embers just for flying over us. >> over the you know, sitting in the hot tub and enjoying a brewski and we didn't know what really was going on. and, next thing you know, alarms were going off and we're in the parking lot and our swimming trunks and whatever we could grab, some came with their wet swimming suits, some just threw the swimming suit, left it there, and got grabbed their clothes, which is fortunate, but , so we don't even know we're going to be able to do the wedding today. >> no one was hurt. dozens of firefighters responded to the scene, keeping the flames contained to the roof and attic. investigators are working to determine the official cause of the fire. they suspect fireplace embers ignited the roof and flames spread from there. >> and in southern california. some discouraging news tonight regarding a road closure in los angeles county. there's a chance a landslide will keep a stretch of topanga canyon boulevard closed into the fall. caltrans says water continues to seep from underneath the march ninth slide near grandview drive. a

incidents on campuses, including a deadly stabbing. >> students from two high schools invited well-known bay area political activist angela davis to speak about her decades of experience fighting against racism and other causes. >> the students say they wanted to hear directly from her. ktvu zambelli has more tonight. after attending that event and speaking with davis and the students. >> i'm so happy to be here at alameda high school. >> angela davis, a longtime political activist and professor , took the stage at alameda high school to speak with a panel of high school students. she drew an audience of 1800. i spoke with her just before the event started as a long time oaklander , it's really important for me to do work in the community, and that work includes engaging with members of the black student unions of alameda high and castro valley high, who organized this event. >> you inspire us to, like, become our own person. >> davis says the work that she's been doing for the last 50

years was sparked by her time in jail. in 1970. guns belonging to davis were used in an armed takeover of a courtroom in marin county in which four people were killed. she was prosecuted for three felonies, including conspiracy to murder. she faced the possibility of the death penalty three times. she was held in jail for over a year before being acquitted of all charges. >> i don't think i would be who i am today had i not spent that time, with other people in prison. >> students say they admire her strength and resiliency in the face of adversity, especially when she was going to prison, when she was facing a whole legal system. >> she stood up. she stood up for what she believed in the specific experience of the black woman. >> i think that's, a perspective that the light isn't really shined on all the time. you know, we talk about women's issues and we talk about black issues, but we don't really talk about how those align. >> among the many topics, davis addressed was her passion for

the abolition of prisons. a cause she hopes future generations will continue the work repressive and racist structures of jails, prisons and police and so i certainly hope that we are able to engage those issues. >> how do we create hope? >> davis tells me young people are always at the forefront for a better future. she says she loves their enthusiasm and sense of urgency. her message to them it's okay to make mistakes in alameda. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, the weekend is just about here, and with the exception of maybe some drizzle tomorrow morning, we don't have to worry about any real raindrops moving into the bay area, but once again, we could have the clouds and the drizzle to start things off, especially near the coast. take a look at the highs from this afternoon. lots of 60s and still some 70s out there, but temperatures have been cooling off over the past couple of days for your saturday. some clouds in the morning becoming partly sunny into the afternoon hours for

sunday. we are expecting earlier clearing that will lead to a little bit of a warm up out there. that means maybe a few more low 80s. so sunday will be the warmest day of the weekend. here's a satellite. over the past few hours, and you can pick out the low clouds on the increase near the coast and already pushing back into the bay as we check out the wider view. here is a nice little storm system out here, a nice circulation, but no real rainfall for us. but that cooler air linked up with this will kind of cap our temperatures for tomorrow. here's a live camera looking out toward the golden gate bridge, where we've been watching the fog push back into the picture over the past few hours, and right now we have some low cloud cover. current numbers have cooled off into the 50s across the bay area, except san jose right now checking in 60 degrees, so weather headlines will continue to thicken up the low clouds for tonight for your weekend. some clouds in the morning. we talked about the warm up on sunday and then next week definitely some more clouds and a cool down headed our way. we're thinking the timing for wednesday and into thursday. overnight temperatures starting out. your saturday will be in the upper 40s to the lower 50s.

you can see the forecast models picking up on some of the cloud cover tomorrow morning at 7:00, and then into the afternoon hours. we should have skies becoming eventually partly sunny. here's the eventual temperature range from the 60s to the mid to upper 70s. so we're watching this guy. this area of low pressure. it's going to move in for tomorrow. that'll kind of keep or prevent our temperatures from warming up too much. but then on sunday we'll see this area of high pressure return. and that means warmer temperatures for sunday and into monday. monday should be the warmest day of the stretch, so take a look at the numbers for your saturday. once again, we're tracking the overcast and maybe some drizzle tomorrow morning. 60s for san francisco, oakland 70 degrees and the warmest locations could be approaching the mid to upper 70s. here's your five day and you'll notice temperatures up a little bit into a sunday and monday, probably the warmest day of the stretch. and then next week looks like more clouds, cooler conditions, slight chance of a shower on wednesday, but maybe on wednesday we could be watching out for some more rain chances back in the picture.

picked on blossom hill road will be opened for the last time on tuesday, april 23rd. the owner tells the mercury news his lease is up this month and the landrd iraising the rent by nearly 70. the restaurant has been serving burgers in this location since 1964. it's the last remning location. at one point, there were burger pits all over the south bay. >> marin county is dealing with a high tech problem dangerous behavior with kids on e-bikes. >> as ktvu tom vacar reports, one school district is trying to protect students from themselves. >> the tamalpais union high school district is considering requiring students who ride their bikes to school to register their bikes with the schools, and those bikes must be of a speed class, legal for their age. also under consideration, banning modified

e-bikes that would allow them to exceed the maximum legal speed of 20 miles an hour. we will be working not only with our law enforcement partners, but i said across the county, this is something that a lot of districts are looking at doing in concert so we can be uniform in how we're addressing these concerns. >> we're not just working with tamar union district on this. we're working with our middle schools and our elementary schools to push out this messaging, because we don't want them being purchased in fifth grade or eighth grade and then ending up at your campus. >> the marin county health department says the accident rate for children on e-bikes is nearly ten times the rate for older age groups. the u.s. national electronic injury surveillance system data shows that e-bikes are more than three times more likely to be involved in a collision with a pedestrian than powered scooters or regular pedal bikes. >> i live in a community of 55 and older, and we have a lot of issues with that. i've seen them

go right down dougherty drive like they are a car without helmets. >> add to that often going the wrong way on a one way street using their phones, ignoring stop signs and traffic lights, driving in the dark with no lights, making illegal turns, and jumping in front of traffic when i drive and there's an e-bike nearby, i always wonder if they know what they're doing. that would be one thing if these e-bikes stuck to the rules, stuck to their lanes, and stuck to the speed limit. unfortunately, there have been enough shenanigans and enough places that finally, it's getting to the level of considering restrictions or even outright bans. >> i do see that they do dangerous things sometimes, but i think that comes from the speed mostly. >> i think if they just were able to get it to slow down a little bit, it would be better. >> and though this is a case of a few causing problems for safety bikers prepare for more rules and restrictions. tom vacar ktvu fox two news.

>> tonight at 730, we spoke with assembly member david o'connell of san rafael, who is working on a state law to address some of the safety concerns regarding e-bikes. >> and many of these bikes go faster than even the stated speed limits for these types of bikes. so what we're trying to do is enable local communities here in marin, to come up with a plan where under 16 would be restricted from using these bikes. >> the bill specifically applies to class two bikes that have a throttle assist capabilities. it passed through the transportation committee and is now on its way to the assembly floor. >> the unofficial cannabis holiday of 420 will look different in san francisco this year. the official party celebrating pot at hippie hill in golden gate park was canceled, but marijuana revelers are still expected to be in the park tomorrow. pastor david hodges founded the church of
