noon. >> good afternoon. i'm gasia mikaelian. i'm andre senior. >> we begin with breaking news out of new york outside the courtroom, where a jury has been seated and former president trump, so-called a hush money trial. and that is where emergency responders rushed a man to the hospital who was seen dousing himself with some kind of liquid and setting himself on fire outside the manhattan courthouse. it was a chaotic scene, with people appearing distraught at the sight. this all happened about 90 minutes ago. a number of bystanders tried to put the fire out with extinguishers before first responders arrived to take the badly burned man to the hospital. he is said to be now in critical condition. meantime, inside the courtroom, the full jury of seven men and five women, plus six alternates have been seated in the case. the jury iludes a sales professional, a software engineer, an english teacher and multiple lawyers. mr. trump has pleaded not guilty to falsifying business records to cover up a sex scandal during his 2016 presidential campaign.

>> us officials are not commenting on reports of israel launching a strike on iran. when asked the biden administration so far simply said it had nothing to do with it. ktvu james torres breaks down the latest on this conflict and the response from the biden administration. >> first, the g7 condemned the unprecedented iranian attack on israel. >> secretary of state antony blinken, speaking from the g7 summit in italy this morning. he opened by calling the attacks on israel, where iran launched more than 300 missiles last weekend on unprecedented in scope and scale. >> we're committed to israel's security. we're also committed to de-escalating, to trying to bring, this tension to a to a close. >> new international reports say israel carried out retaliatory drone attacks overnight in an area in iran home to military bases and nuclear programs. israeli leaders have not claimed

the attacks, nor has iran called for a response. one political expert says this may be strategic in that both sides don't want to escalate the conflict. >> it feels as if they're they're each meaning the iranian leaders, the israeli leaders, are trying to bump up against the line of showing they're tough but not going any further. but it's very difficult to do that. >> the head of the international atomic energy agency, which oversees nuclear activity around the world, confirms there is no damage to any nuclear sites in iran. when asked, secretary blinken would not offer any comments on the latest reported attack. >> i'm not going to speak to that except to say that the united states has not been involved in any offensive operations, what we're focused on what the g7 is focused on. and again, it's reflected in our statement and in our conversation is our work to de-escalate tensions. >> secretary blinken did mention

more sanctions coming to iran, specifically to its uav programs, steel industry and its ministry of defense. david levine of uc law, san francisco, says these attacks seem to be more about showing teeth than causing destruction, saying both sides know what a critical strike could lead to. >> the targets that were chosen both by iran a few days ago and then by israel were designed to show we're tough, but we're done in a way, i think, to minimize damage. and i think the same thing is going on here. they each want to send a message to the other, don't mess with me. but they also are trying to keep this from getting really bad. >> i'm james torres, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, there was a rally outside the federal women's prison in dublin. demonstrators calling on the bureau of prisons to pause its plans to close the facility. they may be getting some last minute help with their case to as ktvu allie rasmus

reports, attorneys filed an emergency injunction in federal court this morning. justice justice, heed our call. >> a group of family members, friends and advocates for the women incarcerated at fci dublin federal prison gathered to call for their release. earlier this week, federal bureau of prison officials announced abruptly they were closing this facility and moving out the more than 600 women incarcerated here to other federal prisons across the country. >> the children and the husbands of these women are going to be suffering immensely, right? >> because there's only one other federal correctional facility in the state, and it's not large enough to house all of these women. since 2022, seven corrections officers and the warden at the dublin prison have been convicted of sexually abusing and assaulting the women incarcerated here. >> earlier this month, a federal judge ordered a special master to come in and oversee operations and reforms. but in response on monday, the us bureau of prisons announced instead it was going to shut down the prison entirely and

move everyone out. alexis verdugo says she's worried her mother will be transferred to a federal prison in illinois, or even farther away. verdugo and her husband and their young kids live in phoenix. her mother is in the middle of serving a 20 year sentence for drug related crimes. >> so it's been very chaotic, it's been a roller coaster of emotions. this last week she's called saying, you know, they're screaming at them. they're being asked to just up and pack all of their things into one small bag. you know, it just feels that they're being punished after they've already been victimized. and of course, like the unknown, they feel like in there, they don't have anyone advocating for them. >> the union representing the prison guards here is also upset. fci dublin is shutting down. >> my officers and their families have suffered the most devastating news this week that they have lost their jobs at fci dublin and that most likely would be forced to abandon this community due to the closure.

>> the president of the union read a pre-prepared statement and did not answer any of our questions, but said this. >> fci dublin should not close. it was being rehabilitated with the world watching, at least on that point, the prison guards union and the advocates here are in agreement. >> supporters of the women in custody decried the bureau of prisons decision to shut down this facility. >> it feels like a really big evasion of accountability because, you know, they could have closed the prison several years ago when the sexual abuse started coming out. >> all of this comes as, just this morning, attorneys representing some of the women in the prison filed an emergency injunction to stop them from being moved to other facilities. a federal judge will review that request for an emergency injunction, but it may be too late. several sources tell ktvu that a vast majority of the 600 women incarcerated here at fci dublin have already been moved to other facilities in dublin. ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news tonight the family of mario

gonzalez will hold a vigil to mark exactly three years since his death. >> this follows last night's announcement by alameda county district attorney pamela price to follow to file involuntary manslaughter charges against three alameda police officers involved in his in-custody death, the coroner's office has ruled. gonzalez's death in 2021 had resulted from a combination of methamphetamine and the stress of being restrained by police, former da nancy o'malley had cleared the officers of any wrongdoing last night, the current da, pamela price, reversed that decision following a new investigation. >> if people don't believe that police officers or law enforcement can be held accountable, then witnesses won't cooperate. but we can't do our job without witnesses, we won't be able to administer justice if the community doesn't trust that the system is going to work for everyone, the attorney representing gonzalez's mother tells ktvu the family is grateful the da's office decided to revisit the case. >> the family is elated to know

that mario's death was not in vain, and that the people who needlessly caused him to die, to not be able to hug his child, to never to be able to say hello to his mother. those three officers are being held accountable and it's long overdue. >> the three officers are james fisher, eric mckinley and cameron lahey. they could face up to four years in state prison if convicted. the attorney for officer lahey has released a statement saying, quote, there is no new evidence. this is a blatantly political prosecution. the officer's actions while taking mr. gonzalez into custody were reasonable, necessary and lawful, and his tragic death was the result of drug toxicity, not criminal misconduct. >> well, for first time in decades, a giant pandas will call san francisco's zoo home the city's mayor negotiating with chinese officials while on a trip to that country. ktvu bailey ocarroll reports. >> this pandemonium is hitting the san francisco zoo for the first time since 1985. san francisco will be home yet again

they've never seen a giant panda . and while many are excited, some kids say the new bears won't necessarily surpass their existing favorites. do you think a panda could compete for your favorite animal? >> i don't think so. >> favorites aside, willow and her family will likely come back when the pandas arrive in the bay. engineers from the beijing zoo were in san francisco meeting with san francisco zoo officials to discuss potential enclosures. it's likely the zoo won't be ready for the bears until 2025, after they complete renovations of existing facilities. in a statement, the zoo said we're thrilled for the return of the giant panda to san francisco zoo and gardens after all these years. the giant panda symbolizes hope for conservation, collaboration and bridges a divide between cultural differences. the incoming bears could draw more people to the zoo when the pandas called the zoo home for three brief months in the 80s, it drew more than 260,000 visitors, exactly how many

station. city leaders have decided the area is in a need of safety improvements right now. after the bus, a bus crash here last month at the bus stop where a family of four was killed, ktvu amber lee spoke with people who live and work in the area. >> muni trains, busses, cars and people create a chaotic scene at san francisco's west portal neighborhood. the sfmta announced thursday that changes are coming soon to improve safety. >> i would love to see it. we walk by here all the time. we see a lot of near misses, a lot of, you know, dangerous things happening, a lot of people making bad moves in their car. >> on march 16th, a 78 year old woman crashed her suv and killed

a family of four at a bus shelter just steps from the muni station. authorities have not yet said what caused the crash, or if the driver will be charged. >> mayor london breed and to district seven supervisor meredith melgar, who have asked the sfmta to work immediately to improve traffic safety near west portal station. >> the sfmta plan includes no left turns on west portal avenue, and cars will no longer be able to cut through the intersection of yellow street and west portal avenue in front of the muni station. the entrance area will be redesigned to include planters and become a community. >> space was shocked because it. i don't think it solves the problem of what happened to that poor family. it's just going to increase traffic all up and down west portal, the owner of roti indian bistro is among the merchants critical of city leaders, rolling out a plan so quickly without their input. >> pankaj shah says disruptions to traffic could hurt. 50% of

district is considering requiring students who ride e-bikes to school to register their bikes with the school. there may also be further restrictions to ban the modification of an e-bikes motor to increase its speed beyond the legal maximum of 20 miles an hour, the marin county health department says the accident rate for children on e-bikes is nearly ten times that of older age groups. people we spoke with today in marin say they think there should be more restrictions. we've seen some e-bikes go pretty fast in a short period of time, so i've seen a lot of dangerous situations, especially in parking lots. >> they're a little bit dangerous. >> i think it depends on who rides them. >> it's essentially a motorcycle that they're driving at the state level. >> a proposed bill would allow marin county to make it illegal for anyone under the age of 16 to operate an e-bike that can go faster than 20 miles an hour. >> all right, so if the weather right now is any indication, are shaping up to be a nice weekend. rosemary oroczo is here now with more and sun shining, at least here in the east bay. rosemary is it everywhere else? >> yeah. finally beginning to see some of that stubborn cloud

colorado. a remembrance vigil will be held tonight for the 12 students and one teacher killed. a former congresswoman will speak about gun safety, but organizers say it will not be a political event. colorado's governor proclaimed it a day of recommitment and is asking people to perform an act of kindness in their community to remember the victims. organizers say the memorial site at a park near the high school is in need of repair. the site includes a wall of healing, which honors all those who were killed and injured, and a ring of remembrance that includes personal reflections of those who died. rick townsend contributed excerpts from his daughter lauren's diary for the memorial. >> a woman in the middle of a field of flowers kissing jesus wounds the lettering wears with the weather, the freezing, the melting, the hail. >> i guess the hailstorm did terrible damage last year. >> the two say it could cost

more than $50,000 to repair the lighting alone. they're hoping to establish an endowment that will fund upkeep of the memorial into the future. >> the well knew the california service corps is looking for new bay area recruits. state chief service officer josh friday is in san jose, with mayor matt mehan to announce the recruitment drive. they say there are nearly 2000 paid positions available in the bay area for the service corps. the positions include tutors and mentors for students, positions that offer support to communities impacted by disasters and jobs at work, with programs that fight hunger and connect vulnerable people to vital resources and services. >> the skills that our corps members will learn through their training and experiences with the corps will prepare them not just for future careers, but for whatever they encounter in life in the coming year. >> the 10,000 members of the california service corps are going to serve nearly 5,000,000 hours of service here in california alone, while the california service corps

consists of four paid service programs, californians for all, college corps, california climate action corps, california for all youth jobs corps, and americorps california for californians may have a chance in november to vote on a measure that would mandate more jail time for certain crimes, such as smash and grab robberies and drug offenses. >> a group called california for safer communities announced it submitted 900,000 signatures to get the measure. homelessness drug addiction and theft reduction act on the ballot. it would essentially roll back portions of proposition 47, which was approved in 2014 by voters. it reduces punishments for some property and drug crimes. >> this is about protecting our communities. we know oftentimes that we don't believe in massive incarceration, but at the end of the day, something has got to be done because as community residents living in our cities, the chamber protecting our businesses, we need this level of support.

but >> people in the region had braced themselves for israel's response to iran's attack last saturday. many predicted it would possibly happen after the upcoming passover holiday, but a fox news military source says israel responded to iran with limited, specific and targeted strikes in the central region of isfahan. that's about 200 miles away from the iranian capital of tehran. iranian state media

downplaying the attack. they have not reported any damage from the strike or direct impacts. the only comments coming from iran were that explosions were heard and that they were caused by iran's air defense systems. iran claims that intercepted three drones and has not identified a potential source of the strike. speaking after a meeting of g7 ministers in italy, us secretary of state antony blinken said the us was not involved in any offensive operations as the g7 condemned the unprecedented iranian attack on israel, unprecedented in scope and scale scope because it was a direct attack on israel from iran, scaled because it involved more than 300 munitions, including ballistic missiles. so far, no comments have been made publicly by the israelis regarding the strike, but reuters reports a senior iranian official told them iran has no plans to strike back immediately. the us embassy in jerusalem has issued a warning to americans living in major cities in israel to limit their travel outside of those

areas. in tel aviv. jeff paul, ktvu, fox two news. >> well, the fbi is on high alert for potential threats against the american jewish community. just before the start of passover on monday, bureau director christopher wray says the agency is concerned that lone actors could target large gatherings, high profile events or symbolic or religious locations. raise, cautioning that the recent hostilities between israel and iran could spill outside of the middle east with attacks from other countries or in the u.s. the fbi reports three times more anti-jewish hate crime investigations since the start of the war between israel and hamas. >> at uc berkeley, pro-palestinian demonstrators called on the university to divest from companies doing business with israel. the rally was also a response to an incident last week at the home of a law school dean and his wife, who's also a professor at the school. during a celebration dinner for students, a law student attempted to give an unscheduled speech about palestinian deaths in gaza. >> i have never seen in the history of this campus a

berkeley law professor put their hands on someone and be so entitled to do so, and they. yeah, i have honestly no words. it was shocking. it was traumatizing. it was humiliating, but it's only one incident in a greater pattern of series that has occurred. >> the law school dean, who is jewish, has said that the incident is the latest anti-semitic attack he's faced and that free speech does not extend to his personal home. the latest tensions between israel and iran briefly caused oil prices to spike this morning. they've since dropped. oil prices went up $3 to more than $90 a barrel in the asian markets. just check the numbers. they fall into the mid low $80 mark in europe and the us. triple a reports that bay area gas prices are actually down compared to last week. san francisco, as of this morning, was averaging $5.70 for a gallon of unleaded. oakland's number is 561 san jose's 555. these prices are all about 1 to $0.03 lower than last week. new this noontime, a march and protest is happening in san francisco ahead of earth day next week. skyfox

was overhead just minutes ago as members and supporters of the group code pink and youth versus apocalypse marched through the financial district, they held a die in in front of the bank of new york mellon. they say they're protesting to demand corporations divest from genocide and imperialism in palestine, congo and sudan. so far, the march appears to be peaceful. no reports of any arrests. >> three people in the south bay are in jail, accused of a range of crimes, including kidnaping and torture. a south bay reporter, jesse gary, tells us the suspects are accused of being connected to an organized crime ring. >> it goes to show that people are really out there doing violent crimes, but a robbery unit detectives, because they did such a thorough investigation, they were able to say, you know, not in san jose. >> san jose police investigators say duck nguyen kim ho and dayton pham are all responsible for the brutal kidnaping and torture of a victim in february. detectives say the trio brought their victim to this home on a quiet cul de sac on the 2600 block of million avenue in the

evergreen section of east san jose. officials say they tortured the man, then released him. a subsequent investigation led detectives to million avenue . >> we've had several incidents of, them being police coming to our street. >> neighbors describe the well-maintained, single story home as a problem property on their block. they say san jose police have conducted multiple raids for illegal activity dating back to 2012. >> they were hauling things in and out. we didn't know what was going on, but it was people that didn't live here and they did not look very reputable. >> last week, lapd's covert response and merged units raided the home again, arresting the three suspects and seizing illegal gambling machines and drugs for sale. >> it happens right when i get up, go to work and i heard a flash bang right next to my room and i heard a commotion outside. >> in addition to robbery, kidnaping, and torture charges, santa clara county sheriff's

investigators were looking for duck wynn in connection to a large retail theft ring. a crew of 13 people targeted stores such as home depot and target from the bay to the central valley. >> this was not a small operation. this was quite substantial. he's definitely one of the leaders of the organization. he's what we refer to as the fence, an individual that receives stolen property and ultimately compiles it for distribution and later resale. >> sheriff's investigators say a raid of two east san jose homes turned up $150,000 worth of evidence. the three suspects in the robbery and kidnaping case are being held here at the main santa clara county jail. all of the suspects from the retail theft case have been released. san jose police say the district attorney's office indicates they'd like to merge the two cases and try all of the suspects together in san jose. jesse gary, ktvu, fox two news san francisco police are asking for those who believe they were assaulted by community activist john jacobo to come forward.

>> allegations first surfaced back in 2021 on social media. the accuser said they were friends before he raped her. jacobo denied the allegations. the police department's special victims unit is now investigating complaints of threats and sexual assaults for three additional women, all our cases remain open, especially if new evidence is developed over time. >> sometimes a case can go a little, cold and then new evidence comes in. >> the kobo resigned from his position with the housing nonprofit. he did not respond to requests for an interview or statement. supervisor hillary ronen is now calling for hearings on how the city handles sexual assault allegations. >> prosecutors and defense attorneys both say they're ready to move forward with the state trial against david depape. depape has already been convicted of assault and attempted kidnaping in federal court for his attack on nancy pelosi's husband, paul. he attacked paul pelosi inside the couple's san francisco home in 2022. adhering this morning, a judge was named for his state

trial. no date set for the beginning of that trial. depape is scheduled to be sentenced for the federal conviction next week. >> the woman who hit and killed a four year old girl near oracle park will not spend time in jail. the crash happened in august at the intersection of fourth and king street. police say the girl was in a stroller when she and her father were hit in the middle of the crosswalk. the 71 year old driver was charged with vehicular manslaughter, but after officials consulted with the victim's family, the driver will serve two years of probation and 400 hours of community service. she also cannot drive again until she completes a driver safety class. cal osha has fined a san francisco construction company for safety violations following a deadly accident in the city's lower haight neighborhood last year. skyfox flew over the scene shortly after a trench collapsed at the excavation site on oak street in september. cal osha says the rcn hardy construction failed to provide a proper protective system for the employees who were working in that trench. one worker died when the trench

collapsed. it was fined $371,000. >> frank bach bart is making changes to its elevators and escalators to help settle a class action lawsuit. the lawsuit claimed that bart violated the civil rights for those with disabilities by not providing clean working elevators at bart stations. as part of the settlement, bartol continued to make reservations. it also says if equipment breaks down, it will make sure a repair person is sent out within an hour. we talked with the bart writer this morning to get her thoughts on the condition of bart's elevators. >> it is very dirty and it needs to be sanitized. it's small. this is what the smell is not good at all. i do think it's very important. there is a lot of elevators that are out of use sometimes. usually in the morning when i'm going to bart, i can hear it say, oh, this elevator is out of use. and it's like, even sometimes for me, i'm like, great. so, you know, i think this is amazing. and i think they need to, do it

quicker and faster. >> we received a statement from bart this morning saying, in part, working with advocates, advancing a series of improvements to elevators, escalators, training, among other things, such as accessible path signage. we'll continue to work to make bart as accessible as possible for all of our riders. as part of the settlement, bart did not accept any wrongdoing. it also has to pay the $825,000 in attorneys fees to the groups that brought the lawsuit. a quick reminder here that bart is planning a special sendoff this weekend for the last of its legacy trains, the transit agency holding a retirement ceremony at 1 p.m. tomorrow at the macarthur station in oakland. the legacy trains are made up of old rail cars that serve the bay area. for more than 50 years. most of the old bart cars are being recycled for metal scrap. >> that deadlock race in congressional district 16, in santa clara and san mateo counties just got more complicated. now, more than 20 previously uncounted ballots have now been discovered during the recount and are being challenged. former san jose mayor sam liccardo received the most votes in the march primary election. two other candidates tied for second place,

assemblymember evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. officials are not saying how the unaccounted ballots were found. the recount started on monday in santa clara county, says the process could now take up to two weeks because of the ballot challenges. some groups are coming together to act as safety monitors for saturday's 420 event at san francisco's hippie hill. members of the psychedelic church of ambrosia, which is an nondenominational interfaith organization that supports the use of cannabis business owners from the haight-ashbury neighborhood and several nonprofits are planning to provide water and medical aid, as well as portable toilets and trash pickup at the gathering. organizers of previous 420 events say they did not have enough funding to do the same this year, but this coalition says it believes people will still show up for a celebration. san francisco police will be looking for intoxicated drivers this weekend, police say. research shows that well-publicized dui checkpoints and saturation patrols could reduce crashes involving impaired drivers by as much as

more than 20 years ago. the woman, whose allegations led to the arrest of lee high school's teacher, shawn thomas, has now filed a lawsuit, claims thomas forced her to terminate a pregnancy that resulted from their relationship. when she was still a teenager. so far, thomas's attorney has not commented on the lawsuit. >> governor gavin newsom has publicly supporting a bill that would make soliciting a child for sex a felony here in california. currently, child sex assault is a felony, but sex trafficking is not. the proposed legislation is now moving forward at the state capitol following some changes by the senate public safety committee. the governor is confident the final version will help in his goal to crack down on child sex crimes in california. >> look forward to getting this bill to my desk in a way that i'll sign it. we have some work to do. >> this proposed legislation

would classify this crime as felony, carrying a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison. currently soliciting a child for sex is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of up to a year in jail. tesla's recalling nearly 4000 of its cyber trucks to fix a potentially dangerous issue with the accelerator pedal. federal safety regulators issued the recall for cyber trucks that were made dating back to november. the defect can result in the pedal pad dislodging and getting stuck when high force is applied to that pedal. tesla says the brakes will still function if this happens. one driver sharing how the issue affected him on social media. the cyber truck owners post went viral after illustrating how his pedal gets stuck and the vehicle starts to accelerate on its own. >> happening today up in the north bay, part of highway 37 between vallejo and sears point will be closed starting tonight for a repaving project, one that will send more traffic to the richmond-san rafael bridge starting at 9:00 tonight, westbound 37 will close between vallejo and sears point. it is
