freeway scattered with rocks. and on top of that, that happened about a half an hour ago. on top of that, they had a collision nearby. so the number two and number three lanes, 680 southbound at pleasanton right now are shut down. they have one lane getting by. and caltrans is sweeping up that rock and they're taking care of those two cars too. so do take note if you're heading that way. that could be a big bugaboo later today because that's a major, major commuter area there. but we will keep an eye on that. if you're heading to san francisco this morning. good for you at 401 in the morning. you have no issues whatsoever. that's the latest. let's get back to pam. >> thank you. frank topping, our news this morning, israel launched an early morning strike against iran. it is retaliation after iran carried out a wide scale attack on israel last sunday. the israeli attack targeted an area of iran that has a military air base and contains facilities associated with the country's nuclear program. >> it seems as if it was

somewhat of a #### for tat. however if i were israel and i did want to escalate, i would go after the nuclear facilities. israel probably is largest threat in the region is iran's nuclear capability. >> iran says the country's air defense systems were activated and that its nuclear sites are safe. the us says it had no involvement in the attack, but that israel did notify us officials beforehand. >> our time is now 402. well, at uc berkeley, pro-palestinian demonstrators called on the university to divest from companies doing business with israel. now the rally was also organized as a response to an incident last week at the home of law school. dean and his wife, who's also a professor at uc berkeley. during a celebration dinner for students, a law student tried to give an unscheduled speech about palestinian deaths in gaza. >> i have never seen in the history of this campus a

berkeley law professor put their hands on someone and be so entitled to do so, and they yeah, i have honestly no words. it was shocking. it was traumatizing. it was humiliating , but it's only one incident in a greater pattern of series that has occurred. >> now, the law school dean, who is jewish, has said the incident is the latest anti-semitic attack he has faced and that free speech does not extend to his personal home policy. out of the and more than 100 pro-palestinian demonstrators were arrested at new york's columbia university after they set up an encampment on the school grounds. the president of columbia ordered police to clear the protesters from the area, saying the encampment violated the campus rules. police say 108 students were charged with trespassing. now to find out the very latest developments on the conflict in the middle east and the protests that have followed. go to our website, ktvu.com. >> we're now hearing from one of

the 28 google employees who was fired this week for protesting against a contract google has with israel. now they were protesting google's $1.2 billion contract to provide artificial intelligence services to the israeli government and military software engineer iman kassem flew from seattle to sunnyvale to take part in a sit in and demand that google cut its ties to israel. >> there was absolutely no way that i could continue working at google without, pushing these demands. they're continuing to lie not just to their employees, but to the public and all tech workers. >> google says its contract work with israel is, quote, not directly at highly sensitive, classified or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services. google calls the actions of the workers who were fired unacceptable and disruptive, and that they violated company policy. >> our time is now 405. more details this morning from oakland about an incident on wednesday where oakland police shot and killed a murder suspect

from sacramento. now, ktvu has confirmed he was 33 year old dominique broat. he was wanted for the shooting last month of his girlfriend, as police were conducting a welfare check on her on wednesday, sacramento detectives tracked brodd to west oakland and asked oakland police to help capture him. >> the door suddenly opened. he came out, with a gun, raised it and pointed it. and the shooting occurred. i think in this case, there is no question that this suspect posed an imminent threat of death or serious injury when the officers fired. >> now, this was the first deadly shooting by oakland police since november, according to authorities. that's when internal affairs and internal affairs sergeant shot and killed a man who pointed a gun at him near oakland city hall. it is now 406 san francisco's west portal neighborhood will soon see some major changes near the

muni bus metro station. >> city leaders have decided the area is in need of safety improvements. that's after a bus stop crash last month, where a family of four was killed. ktvu is amber lee spoke with people who live and work in the area. >> muni trains, busses, cars and people create a chaotic scene at san francisco's west portal neighborhood. the sfmta announced thursday that changes are coming soon to improve safety. >> i would love to see it. we walk by here all the time. we see a lot of near misses, a lot of, you know, dangerous things happening, a lot of people making bad moves in their car. >> on march 16th, a 78 year old woman crashed her suv and killed a family of four at a bus shelter just steps from the muni station. authorities have not yet said what caused the crash, or if the driver will be charged. >> mayor london breed and to district seven supervisor mariano melgar, who have asked the sfmta to work immediately to

improve traffic safety near west portal station. >> the sfmta plan includes no left turns on west portal avenue, and cars will no longer be able to cut through the intersection of yellow street and west portal avenue in front of the muni station. the entrance area will be redesigned to include planters and become a community space. >> i was shocked because it. i don't think it solves the problem of what happened to that poor family. it's just going to increase traffic all up and down west portal. >> the owner of roti indian bistro is among the merchants critical of city leaders, rolling out a plan so quickly without their input. pankaj shah says disruptions to traffic could hurt. 50% of his business comes from customers driving up to get takeout and food delivery drivers doing pickups, so one incident should not be a one that makes so many changes at the same time. >> i was surprised that it was such a knee jerk reaction.

>> maureen stotts owns easy breezy, a market on west portal avenue. she agrees there needs to be safety improvements but questions the changes that are proposed. >> it's going to create more problems than what they're trying to solve. >> sfmta plans to do public outreach with pop ups in the west portal neighborhood next monday, tuesday and wednesday. the mayor's office says the changes are temporary, but will be fast tracked to be in place by this summer. city leaders say there will be evaluations to see what works and what doesn't. amber lee, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right, thank you. amber bart is making some changes to its elevators and escalators to settle a class action lawsuit. the lawsuit claimed bart violated the civil rights for those with disabilities by not providing clean, working elevators at bart stations as part of the settlement, bart will continue to make renovations. it also says that if equipment breaks down, it will make sure a repair person is sent within an hour. all right, let's head right over to

steve paulson. i can definitely feel the cooler temperatures when i open the windows. >> it'll be a big drop today, no doubt about it. there's a system coming in down towards central california. i'll show it to you right there. that little spin in the atmosphere. it started last night at the giants game when that fog came pouring in. and that has opened the door to a pretty good breeze here. and a big fog bank. 50s on a lot of the temps. some upper 40s, but mainly 50s on the temps. higher elevations below 1400ft. it's significantly cooler. oakland hills that's above the claremont 47. there were 59 at this time yesterday. boulder creek is in there above that, though still some more marymount voters at 60. but travis 20 west southwest 24. that's a sure sign. this time of year you start to look for that delta breeze and it's there 30s up in the mountains, 40s, 50s, 60s through the interior along the coast, 60s, 50s, 60s as well. behind this, there's not much there. it's just more of an onshore breeze. so it looks like today might be the coolest day, but our warm little mini warm up i mean, last

vallejo and sears point will be closed beginning tonight for a repaving project, and it will send a lot of traffic to the richmond-san rafael bridge. beginning at 9:00 tonight. westbound highway 37 will close between vallejo and sears point. now, it's scheduled to stay closed until 4 a.m. monday morning to get around that road closure, caltrans recommends going north on highway 29, west on highway 12, and south on highway 121. or you can take the richmond-san rafael bridge. >> san francisco is suing oakland for trademark infringement over the proposal to change the airport name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. now, the lawsuit seeks an injunction against oakland and travel related services such as airlines and rental car companies, from using the proposed name in marketing or

advertising. ktvu talked to a trademark law attorney who says this case is about protecting consumers from confusion. >> all we really have to compare are the names, and they tend to give the first two words a lot of weight, because that's the first thing that the person hears that a consumer sees on their screen. when they're ordering their lyft or when they're booking the flight. and so the fact that the two first two words are really similar, it's going to really lend itself to a finding of confusion. >> the lawsuit accuses oakland of trying to capitalize off the reputation of sfo and pull in travelers who were not intending to fly to the east bay. oakland mayor shengtao did not respond directly to the lawsuit, but discussed the proposed name change. she explains the rebrand could offer several benefits, she said, quote, notably, it could support the airport's efforts to secure more direct flights to additional destinations, enhancing convenience for travelers and potentially boosting tourism in oakland. well klay thompson was

in concord starts today. today the new tenant protection law approved by the concord city council back in february go into effect. the just cause for eviction has several new rules for landlords, including one that requires them to pay thousands of dollars in relocation assistance for no fault evictions. >> our time is 424. state officials are pointing to a growing affordable housing complex in oakland as an example of what is possible in california. attorney general rob bonta toured casa suenos yesterday morning. it's at the fruitvale transit village. 181 affordable homes have been added to its inventory. bonta says the state will need 2.5 million new homes by the year 2030 to meet the need. but he says we're not

19th pam. >> it's been a very very busy week. it has been a lot of news, some changes in the weather. let's check in with steve paulson. >> cooler today and a little mini warm up for a couple of days. but there's a big fog bank pouring in. so the onshore breeze is in place. 40s 50s on the temps. don't think these will change all that much. the higher clouds have moved out for now. so today and tomorrow look to be similar than a little warm up on sunday 60s and 70s on those temps. all right. frank mallicoat truck spilled gravel. where? >> 680 south. it's in pleasanton at burnell, and there is a sig alert out there right now. and traffic is building. let's take a look, already a backup at this hour? at what is it? not even 430 just yet. on this friday, a truck lost part of its gravel load. a good 300ft of highway there, spread with raw caltrans sweepers are out trying to clean it up, but they got to get every last rock off that freeway. and in the midst of that, a two car pile up. number two and number three lanes, they are blocked. they've got a couple of tow

trucks on hand trying to clean up everything. number one lane is open, but it's slow and likely to be slow for a while. so if you're heading that way, take note that could be a big issue later this morning when things start to build. highway 24 westbound and in lafayette carson moving along just fine. that is good news for lamorinda folks and folks in walnut creek. and if you're heading to the bay bridge today, nice and easy on a friday, that's the way we like it. 430 your time. let's check back in with dave. >> okay, frank. thank you. well, happening today, the man suspected of killing seven people in a mass shooting last year in half moon bay is due to appear in court. now, today's hearing is expected to set the dates for a trial and the start of other meetings. 67 year-old chun li zhao is accused of seven counts of murder in connection with the 2023 workplace shooting. prosecutors say if he's convicted, he could be eligible for the death penalty.

>> well, the alameda county district attorney's office has filed involuntary manslaughter charges against three alameda police officers. those officers were involved in the in-custody death of mario gonzalez. three years ago. now, the coroner's office had ruled gonzalez's death resulted from a combination of methamphetamine and the stress of being restrained by police. former district attorney nancy o'malley had cleared the officers of any wrongdoing. but last night, current da pamela price reversed that decision following a new investigation in if people don't believe that police officers or law enforcement can be held accountable, then witnesses won't cooperate. >> we can't do our job without witnesses. we won't be able to administer justice if the community doesn't trust that the system is going to work for everyone. >> now, the attorney representing gonzalez's mother tells us here at ktvu that the family is grateful that the da's office has decided to revisit

the case. >> the family is elated to know that mario's death was not in vain, and that the people who needlessly caused him to die, to not be able to hug his child, to never to be able to say hello to his mother. those three officers are being held accountable and it's long overdue. >> for now, the three officers are james fisher, eric mckinley and cameron leahy. they could face up to four years in state prison if convicted. the attorney for officer leahy has released this statement saying, quote, there is no new evidence. this is a blatantly political prosecution. the officer's actions while taking mr. gonzalez into custody were reasonable, necessary and lawful , and his tragic death was the result of drug toxicity, not criminal misconduct. >> our time now for 33 219 year old women are now facing charges in a double homicide in napa last weekend, where two other young women were killed, jessica whitton faces two counts of murder with special

circumstances in the shooting deaths last weekend judith adolph is charged with assault and being an accessory to the crime. now. the shooting happened saturday night during a fight. napa police responded to reports of gunfire and found the victims, 22 year old john nicholson, junior of vallejo, is also being held without bail. he's charged with two counts of murder. >> cal osha has fined a san francisco construction company for safety violations following a deadly accident in the city's lower haight neighborhood last year. skyfox flew over the scene shortly after the trench collapsed at the excavation site on oak street in september, cal osha says d'arcy and hardie construction failed to provide a proper protective system for the employees who were working in that trench. it was fined $371,000. san francisco firefighters are mourning the loss of a lieutenant in the department. firefighters say lieutenant steven sylvester died unexpectedly at his home after

working a shift. he joined the department in august of 2002. the firefighters survived by his wife and four children. san francisco fire chief janine nicholson has released this statement. lieutenant steven sylvester was a cornerstone of our department, cherished by all who worked alongside him. he was not only a consummate professional, but also a devoted family man. his profound presence will be sorely missed and his exemplary service will be remembered forever. >> our time is now. 434 ktvu is now confirmed. several ballots are being challenged in the vote recount of the district 16 congressional race to replace retiring congresswoman anna eshoo. now, it's not clear how many ballots are being challenged and the reason why former san jose mayor sam liccardo received the most votes in the march primary election. two other candidates tied for second place assembly member evan lowe and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. they

will both appear on the november ballot unless the vote recount leads to a different result. the recounting process began on monday. santa clara county says this recount could now take up to two weeks because of the ballot challenges. >> efforts to ban tiktok are moving forward to the senate after house republicans included the ban in the package that would send aid to ukraine and israel. now, the original ban was passed in the house in march. it gave tiktok's parent company, bytedance, six months to sell the app. now, the revised legislation would give the company nine months to sell, with a possible three month extension if a sale was in progress. >> time is 435. jury selection will continue today in new york. in donald trump's criminal trial . now, 12 members of the jury have now been seated. seven men and five women. jury selection will continue today to pick jury alternates. now one excused juror in the case says she was shocked to find out the case

they were being considered for. >> everybody was shocked when we saw him on tuesday for the first time, you know, we couldn't believe that that was the case. so we were shocked and frozen. >> prosecutors could start presenting their case early next week. >> governor gavin newsom is publicly supporting a bill that would make child sex trafficking a felony in california. >> now, that proposed legislation is now moving forward at the state capitol. following some changes made by the senate public safety committee. however, the governor is confident the final version will help in his goal to crack down on child sex crimes in california. >> look forward to getting this bill to my desk in a way that i'll sign it. we have some work to do now. >> this proposed legislation would classify this crime as a felony, carrying a maximum penalty of up to four years in prison. right now, purchasing a child for sex is a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of up to

a year in jail. it is 437. san francisco congresswoman nancy pelosi has written a new memoir about her years as an elected official. it's called the art of power. it will be released in august. the publisher is simon and schuster. they say they will cover nancy pelosi's legislative career with a personal account of the january 6th capitol riot and the assault at her home in 2022 that left her husband with a fractured skull. nancy pelosi served as house speaker for eight years. she's been a congresswoman for almost 27 years. >> giant pandas from china could soon come to san francisco, mayor london breed joyfully announced the agreement while in beijing. now she is wrapping up her weeklong economic and diplomatic trip to asia and says an agreement has been reached to bring the bears to san francisco. the san francisco zoo hopes to complete renovations so that the pandas could come soon. >> we have some cute, cuddly,

county. chp says it happened at about 1230 yesterday afternoon near gray whale cove state beach, south of pacifica. a chp helicopter crew reached the vehicle 200ft down, but the driver was not able to be saved. an investigation is underway to determine the cause of the crash. >> our time now. 443 three men are behind bars now accused of kidnaping and torturing a man in san jose earlier this year. now, investigators say the victim was kidnaped. the evening of february 13th, then was held against his will in a home in east san jose. that's when police say the three suspects tortured and assaulted the man several times before finally letting him go. >> it goes to show that people are really out there doing violent crimes. but a robbery unit detectives, because they did such a thorough investigation, they were able to say, you know, not in san jose, 2600. >> investigators say they don't believe the victim knew the three suspects. they say the home where they lived was also

team in the southeast is reporting a possible breakthrough in treating young cancer patients. now, doctors at florida international university say they have found a way to eliminate some of the time

consuming trial and error methods in diagnosing a child with cancer. they're combining dna analysis with extensive drug testing to dramatically speed up this testing process. within days, doctors can see how small samples of a patient's cancer cells respond to many different types of treatment. we tested over 120 fda approved drugs directly on the patient's cancer cells, and we did that within a week. reporter doctors say in the past, these same tests would often take several months. they're confident these same tests would also be effective in treating adults battling cancer. a number of groups are coming together to form a safety net to monitor saturday's 420 event at san francisco's hippie hill. now, it's a collaboration between the psychedelic church of ambrosia business owners from the haight-ashbury neighborhood and several nonprofits. they're planning to provide water, medical aid, portable toilets and trash pickups at the gathering. the city says it canceled the official 420

administration. good morning, james. >> dave, good morning to you. well, a number of nations right now are in italy for the g7 summit. their theme is a focus on de-escalation and avoiding a greater conflict. of course, those conversations coming from the wars in gaza and in ukraine, but the latest conflict that we've been talking about comes between iran and israel. international reports say israel carried out drone attacks in an area in iran, home to military bases and even nuclear programs. when some comments some israeli leaders alluded to an attack but still haven't directly said if that's something that's happened, explosions have been reported in iran. but even iranian state media is downplaying the so-called attack, saying not much has really happened. some officials report the strike was limited to avoid an iranian response, even saying israel gave the u.s. a last minute heads up on the attack. but this morning, secretary of state antony blinken spoke from the g7 summit. avoid all questions about the reported strike.

making stops at different zoos all around the world. now, of course, they are going to come back to san francisco. and as i mentioned, lots of people very excited, but a lot went in to this decision. and these pandas coming back here. so san francisco mayor london breed made the announcement last night on x while she was on a week long trip to china. this all in an effort to bring more business and tourism to the city of san francisco. mayor breed called the process of getting the pandas here a collaborative one that required months of advocacy and coordination, and we have some cute cut only black and white beauties coming to our city. >> ladies and gentlemen, welcome pandas to san francisco. >> now, engineers from the beijing zoo were at the san francisco zoo meeting with officials there to look at potential enclosures and discuss where the bear or bears will call home. it's likely the zoo

for renters take effect. the new tenant protection laws were approved by the concord city council back in february. the just cause for eviction has several new rules for landlords, including one rule that landlords have to pay thousands of dollars in relocation assistance for no fault evictions. as well, state officials are pointing to a growing affordable housing complex in oakland as an example of what is possible in california. attorney general rob bonta toured casa suenos yesterday morning at the fruitvale transit village, 181 affordable homes have been added to its inventory. there rob bonta said the state will need 2.5 million new homes by the year 2030 to meet the need, but he says we're not on pace to meet those numbers.

it cleaned up sometime in the 6:00 hour. but if you're heading that way, you might want to go an alternative route because it's going to take a while. that is a look at traffic. 531 your time. let's get it back to pam. >> thank you frank. well, bart is now required to do a better job of keeping its station elevators from breaking down and staying clean. the legal order from a federal judge is part of a settlement from a class action lawsuit. ktvu is ali rasmus joining us now from walnut creek with the details of the changes, bart will now have to make ali. >> yeah. a class action lawsuit that was brought seven years ago. and now, finally this week, there's a resolution. bart has 87 elevators at its stations, system wide. and it also have a number of escalators at most stations, like this one here behind me at walnut creek. this is how people get to the top platforms to take those bart trains. but now bart is required to come up with a plan to renovate and update its

escalators and elevators systemwide. it's part of a legal settlement for a class action lawsuit brought by several bay area groups that represented people with disabilities and mobility challenges for someone in a wheelchair, if there is no working elevator at a bart station, that person simply can't take bart. under this agreement, bart is also required to dispatch a repair person within an hour. if a station, elevator, or escalator breaks down. now, a lawsuit was filed back in 2017. it claimed that bart was violating the americans with disabilities act by not maintaining its elevators and escalators. as part of the settlement agreement announced yesterday in federal court. bart did not accept any wrongdoing, but it does have to pay the $825,000 in attorneys fees to the groups that brought the lawsuit. now, we've reached out to bart spokespersons this morning to get their response and are waiting to hear back. but in the meantime, this settlement means that going forward, over the next decade, there are supposed to be improvements and changes to bart's elevators and escalators at all of the stations in its

nuclear programs. and in some comments, some israeli leaders alluded to an attack but still have not directly said if that's something that's happened. explosions have been reported in iran. but even iranian state media downplaying the attacks, saying not much has actually happened. in fact, the head of the international atomic energy agency, which oversees nuclear activity around the world, confirms there is no damage to any nuclear sites in iran. some officials report the strike was limited, potentially to avoid another retaliatory attack. an italian foreign minister reports. u.s. officials told them during a g7 meeting, the u.s. was given a last minute heads up about the attack, but secretary blinken would not confirm that. when asked. >> i'm not going to speak to that except to say that the united states has not been involved in any offensive operations, what we're focused on what the g7 is focused on. and again, it's reflected in our statement and in our conversation is our work to

woman whose allegations against lee high school teacher shawn thomas led to his recent arrest, has now filed a lawsuit. the lawsuit claims thomas forced her to end a pregnancy that resulted from their relationship. when she was still a teenager. so far, the attorney for thomas has made no comment on this lawsuit. >> more details are coming out involving the incident in which oakland police shot and killed a sacramento murder suspect, ktvu has confirmed his identity as 33 year old dominique broat. he was wanted for gunning down his girlfriend last month as police were conducting a welfare check on her sacramento detectives tracked him down to west oakland on wednesday and asked oakland police for assistance in catching him. the door suddenly opened. >> he came out, with a gun, raised it and pointed it and, the shooting occurred. i think in this case, there is no question that this suspect posed an imminent threat of death or

serious injury. when the officers fired. >> authorities say this is the first deadly shooting by oakland police since november, when an internal affairs sergeant shot and killed a man pointing a handgun at him near city hall. >> time is now 608. well, there will be a huge traffic disruption in the north bay part of highway 37 between vallejo and sears point will be closed beginning tonight for a repaving project, and this will send a lot of traffic to the richmond, san rafael bridge, now beginning at 9:00 tonight, westbound highway 37 will close between vallejo and sears point, and it's scheduled to stay closed until 4 a.m. monday morning. now, to get around the road closure, many drivers will probably head over to the richmond-san rafael bridge. however, caltrans also recommends going north on highway 29, west on highway 12, and then south on highway 121.

follows the deaths of a couple and their two children at a bus stop last month. ktvu andre senior. joining us live in studio with the changes, the city is now considering. >> well, good morning to you, pam. that deadly crash in san francisco's west portland neighborhood took place on march 16th. just more than a month ago now, police say 78 year-old woman crashed her suv into a bus stop right near the west portal muni station, killing a couple and their two children. investigators have not yet determined what caused the deadly crash, and prosecutors are still debating whether to file criminal charges against the driver. but city leaders are

telling san francisco's transit agency there needs to be major safety improvements in the west portland neighborhood. >> mayor london breed and to district seven supervisor meredith melgar, who have asked the sfmta to work immediately to improve traffic safety near west portal station. >> now, the plans call for banning all left turns on west portal avenue, and there would be several other new traffic restrictions on the streets surrounding the bus stop where the family was killed. but some people who live and work in the neighborhood have some concerns about this safety plan. they question whether these changes will prevent a similar tragedy in the future. >> i was shocked because it i don't think it solves the problem of what happened to that poor family. it's just going to increase traffic all up and down west portal. >> one incident should not be a one that makes so many changes at the same time, however, city

leaders feel this is an urgent matter that needs immediate action. >> muni plans to get more public reaction on this proposed safety plan from residents in the neighborhood. early next week. and the goal is, of course, is to have the safety improvements and others in place. dave, by the summer. >> all right, andre, thank you. time now. 615 with the east bay city of pittsburgh is spending more than $4 million to improve a trail that connects bicyclists and pedestrians to bart. the transportation leaders held a groundbreaking ceremony last week to launch the project. the 1.5 mile pathway will include walkways that are well lit and several new bike lanes. the goal, according to officials, is to reduce traffic jams and also give residents a safe alternative to driving. >> san francisco is suing oakland for trademark infringement over the proposal to change the airport name to san francisco bay oakland international airport. the lawsuit seeks an injunction

against oakland and travel related services, such as airlines and rental car companies, from using the proposed name in marketing or advertising. ktvu talked to a trademark law attorney who says this case is about protecting consumers from confusion. >> all we really have to compare are the names and they tend to give the first two words a lot of weight, because that's the first thing that the person hears that a consumer sees on their screen when they're ordering their lyft or when they're booking the flight. and so the fact that the two first two words are really similar, it's going to really lend itself to a finding of confusion. the lawsuit accuses oakland of trying to capitalize off the reputation of sfo and pull in travelers who weren't intending to fly to the east bay. >> well, the warriors have one goal this summer, reshaping the team so it can once again compete for a championship. general manager mike dunleavy and head coach steve kerr held their end of the season news conference. they made it clear that includes bringing back pending free agent klay

approved several new purchases for the police department, including less lethal launchers, long range megaphones, and eight drones. there were some mixed views during public comments, but the majority of people are in favor of the move. the price tag for the equipment is more than $115,000. mayor london breed has submitted two nominations for the san francisco police commission. retired judge c don clay has been nominated to replace commissioner jim byrne and current commissioner deborah walker has been nominated for reappointment. the nominations need to be approved by the board of supervisors before moving forward. an oakland volunteer based group is working to get more trees in the neighborhoods. the group trees for oakland say in order to apply for a tree, people who live in oakland have to fill out a tree request form. while installation of the tree is free, those who can cover some of the costs will receive priority. residents can browse through a list of city approved tree species to decide which

still a bit of a slow roll. 680 south time is 632. let's get it back to pam a day. >> thank you frank. bart will have to upgrade its station elevators after it faced a class action lawsuit. a federal judge approved a legal order that requires the transit agency to do a better job of maintaining and cleaning its elevators. >> ktvu sally rasmus is at the walnut creek bart station now to tell us more about it. good morning. ali >> good morning dave. well, any time you go to a bart station, there is always either an escalator or an elevator to get up to the platform. like this escalator here behind us at the walnut creek bart station. but if you were in a wheelchair and the escalator is not an option if the elevators broken, there is no way you can take bart. and that was the basis of a class action lawsuit that was brought by several bay area groups representing people with disabilities and mobility challenges. that lawsuit was actually brought back in 2017. it claimed that bart was violating the americans with disabilities act by failing to

properly maintain its elevators and escalators at its station. now, seven years later, there was an agreement reached a settlement in that lawsuit announced in federal court yesterday. under that agreement, bart is now required to dispatch a repair person within an hour. if an elevator or escalator at its stations breaks down. bart has 87 elevators system wide and now, also as part of this settlement agreement, it is required to come up with a strategic plan to renovate and update those escalators and elevators systemwide. now, as part of the settlement, bart did not accept any wrongdoing, so that means it can't be sued on this issue in the future. it also has to pay about $825,000 in attorneys fees for the groups that brought the suit. now, bart spokesperson this morning just sent us a statement in the last ten minutes in response to this settlement. and it says in part that bart is, quote, working with advocates to advance a series of improvements to its elevators, escalators and training. the statement goes on to say that bart is also working

on improving some of the signs, directing people on where to find the elevators at its stations. but according to the settlement, they do have some time to make some of these upgrades and improvements to their elevators. they have a period, according to the settlement, in the legal document of about 10 to 15 years to do that live in walnut creek. ali rasmus, ktvu, fox two news. >> thank you. ali. new protections for renters start today in concord. the new tenant protection laws approved by the concord city council back in february go into effect today. the just cause for eviction has several new rules for landlords, including one that requires them to pay thousands of dollars in relocation assistance for no fault evictions. >> our time now 6.35. the city of san rafael wants to stop a surge of evictions in one part of the city. >> we've seen many buildings being sold to, you know, other, investors that are just looking for an investment opportunity that will become, you know, an

we don't know the exact date, but we do know the last time they were here was back in 1985. they called san francisco home for about three months, and that was part of a little world tour that they were on. they were making stops in different zoos all around the country. now, san francisco mayor london breed did make the announcement last night on x, while she is on a week long trip to china, an effort to bring more business and tourism to san francisco. mayor breed called the process of getting the pandas here a collaborative one that required months of advocacy and coordination. the idea was actually originally floated around the apex summit, which took place in san francisco. >> we have some cute, cuddly black and white beauties coming to our city. ladies and gentlemen, welcome pandas to san francisco! >> engineers from the beijing zoo were at the san francisco zoo meeting with officials there to look at potential enclosures

and discuss where the bears will exactly call home within the zoo. it's likely that that enclosure will not be done or ready for the pandas until 2025. that's after san francisco can renovate its existing facility, according to abc news. they are reporting that that those improvements will cost about $25 million. now, typically, pandas are on lease for about $1 million annually for the two bears. that money does go toward conservation efforts. and also abc news also reporting that the zoo will start a major fundraising campaign to help pay for those new costs associated with the pandas new home. right now, the only pandas in the u.s. are at the atlanta zoo. again, no word yet on exactly when the pandas will get here, how long they will stay, or exactly how many will be coming in san francisco. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. >> all right. thank you. bailey pandas are awfully cute. yeah, i

eshoo. it's not clear how many ballots are being challenged and the reason why former san jose mayor sam liccardo received the most votes in the march primary election. two other candidates tied for second place assemblymember evan low and santa clara county supervisor joe simitian. they'll both appear on the november ballot unless the vote recount leads to a different result. now, the recount process began monday. santa clara county says this recount could now take up to two weeks because of the ballot challenges. and there's a new report that says few counties in california have policies in place to allow eligible young people in juvenile facilities to vote. only 16 out of 40 counties have responded to a survey by the youth law center, had written policies in place, the youth law center says young people aged 18 and older living in juvenile detention facilities

penalty of up to four years in prison. right now, people who facilitate soliciting a child for sex is charged with a misdemeanor with a maximum penalty of up to a year in jail. well, some female inmates are being released early as part of the plans to close the women's prison in dublin, the federal bureau of prisons announced the closure of fci dublin on monday. that's where eight officers have been charged with sex crimes. lawyers are telling ktvu some of their clients, who had a short amount of time left on their sentence, are either being released early for good behavior or put on house arrest. sources tell ktvu all of the women will be relocated by this weekend. it is 656 new regulations to protect indoor employees in california from excessive heat will not include workers at prisons and jails. now last month, state workplace safety officials proposed some new rules that would require
