weighing in on google's decision to cut ties and charges filed against officers in the east bay. tonight's surprise announcement from the alameda county district attorney. >> this is ktvu, fox two news at 730. >> good evening. on this thursday, i'm cristina rendon, alameda county district attorney. pamela price says the public accountability unit has filed charges against three city of alameda police officers for the in-custody death of mario gonzalez. officers were responding to a911 call about a possibly intoxicated man in april 2021, when they restrained the 26 year old. the alameda county coroner's office ruled that gonzalez died from methamphetamine. combined with the stress of being restrained by police, the former alameda county da found three officers were lawful and objectively reasonable when they arrested gonzalez. those officers now face involuntary manslaughter charges. >> what the public should know is that i am walled off from the case. i will not be

participating and have not participated in the ultimate decision about the case. and i'm very proud that my public accountability unit, which i created in january of 2023, has been able to independently assess the evidence and come to a decision about this case. >> last year, the city of alameda paid $11 million to settle a wrongful death lawsuit on behalf of gonzalez's young son. we'll bring you more on these new developments coming up tonight at ten. the city of alameda has responded to the charges, saying at this time, one of the three involved officers is no longer employed by the city of alameda. the two other officers currently employed by the city of alameda have been placed on administrative leave. the city of alameda remains deeply committed to transparency and accountability. pro-palestine demonstrators are speaking out after google fired 28 employees for protesting at its offices in sunnyvale, seattle and new york earlier this week in sunnyvale, five people were arrested during

the demonstrations. ktvu crystal bailey joining us live now to break down why google made this choice. crystal >> well, cristina, it's another clash between a big corporation and folks who say those companies aren't are helping israel in the war. but legal experts say google is within its rights to terminate, and protesters knew it was a possibility. of the 28 people fired from google, iman hashem is one of them. she's a software engineer who flew in from seattle to sunnyvale to participate in a sit in this is video from one of the google offices. google google. you can't hide, she says she went outside when she was asked to leave, and she was not one of the five people arrested. she knew she was risking her job, but she says she does not regret it. >> there was absolutely no way that i could continue working at google without, pushing these demands. she's an organizer for the group no tech for apartheid. >> the group says they were protesting google's $1.2 billion contract called nimbus, saying

the technology is being used to help the israeli military target and kill civilians in gaza. but google says while they do work with the israeli ministries, the contract work is, quote, not directly at highly sensitive, classified or military workloads relevant to weapons or intelligence services. >> they're continuing to lie not just to their employees, but to the public and all tech workers. >> google called the employees behavior unacceptable and disruptive, saying it violates multiple company policies. an internal memo from google leadership reads. they took over office spaces, defaced our property and physically impeded the work of other googlers. us attorney david levine says google is within its right to fire employees, and the first amendment does not hold weight at a private company. >> in california, as in most places in the united states, you were an at will employee, meaning you can be fired for any reason or no reason unless the reason is illegal. >> organizers say people who were not directly involved in

the protest were also fired. >> it has just been an absolute shame to be associated and, to the company's name. while the company continues to avoid any accountability, hasim says their goal to double down on their demands with big tech and the sunnyvale department of public safety says all five people arrested were released, but the investigation has not been submitted to the district attorney's office, so they could not say whether or not any charges would come. >> christina crystal bailey in our newsroom tonight. >> crystal. thank you. we still have not heard if charges will be filed against the protesters who demonstrated on monday on the golden gate bridge and on interstate 880, in oakland, san francisco and alameda county. district attorneys each say they are reviewing case information. and you'll remember more than three dozen people were arrested for those protests that stopped traffic for hours. happening now two groups are expected to protest a debate tonight on the uc berkeley campus. a live

picture for you here. as people are gathered outside the hall where that debate is set to take place, it is all over the war between israel and hamas, and it appears that things are pretty peaceful right now. although this debate will get underway in just about 30 minutes. inside, evan hall, author and pro-palestinian activist marc lamont hill will debate mosab hassan yousef. he is known as the son of hamas, the son of one of hamas founder who defected to israel. and there was a pro-palestinian rally on the cal campus earlier today calling on the university to divest from companies doing business with israel. the rally was also organized in response to an incident last week at the home of school of law dean erwin chemerinsky and his wife, professor catherine fisk, during a celebration dinner for students. palestinian american law student malak antifa attempted to speak video shows a physical confrontation unfold during which fisk tries to grab the microphone away from the student on a face, says her free

speech rights were denied. >> berkeley is able to profit off of the fact that there is multiple stages of civil disobedience that occur where marketed as the leftist progressive bubble, and instead of while that's celebrated for other students that happen to agree with dean erwin chemerinsky, i as one that did not and stood up for genocide and had a greater call to action, was instead attacked. >> chemerinsky, who is jewish, has said that the incident is the latest anti-semitic attack he has faced and that free speech does not extend to his home. we will have a live report on tonight's protest on our 10:00 newscast tonight. one man is dead after his vehicle went over the cliff of highway one in san mateo county. chp says it happened at about 1230 this afternoon near gray whale cove state beach, south of pacifica. a chp helicopter crew reached that vehicle that was over the cliff. 200ft down. firefighters tried to save the driver, but he did not survive. the car has now

been pulled up onto a tow truck. no word on what caused that crash. traffic is affected in the area. san francisco transit officials say they want to move quickly on safety improvements in west portal as soon as this summer, following the deaths of a family of four. sfmta says the goal is to simplify the intersection at west portal and uloa street, where that accident happened last month. the project will add protection to the bus stops on uloa street and restrict traffic, allowing only right turns for drivers heading east on yellow and north on west portal. officials say eliminating the left turns greatly reduces the risk for pedestrians here in san francisco. >> on a typical year, about 40% of our traffic deaths are a result of drivers making left turns and not seeing pedestrians in the crosswalk. >> officials also want to convert the center lanes on west portal avenue between yellow and

vicente streets to transit only lanes, and create a pedestrian and community space at the entrance to the west portal station. criticism is mounting over the handling of rape allegations against a once prominent community leader in san francisco. ktvu s christian captain received an update on the case today from police and has our report. >> san francisco police are speaking out today. >> we're here because of the john jacobo case. >> captain alexa o'brien from san francisco's special victims unit says her officers are actively investigating allegations of violence, threats, rape and sexual assault leveled against community activist john jacobo. >> are all our cases remain open, especially if new evidence is developed over time? sometimes a case can go a little, cold and then new evidence comes in. >> allegations against jacobo first came to light in 2021, when sasha perrigo wrote about it on the social media platform formerly known as twitter,

naming and adding john jacobo in her post in a google doc, perrigo said she was not pursuing criminal charges at the time for personal reasons. jacobo denied the accusations. now, new allegations have surfaced, with three more women coming forward with stories of threats, violence and sexual assaults. jacobo has now resigned from his position with a housing nonprofit in the city. he did not respond to requests for an interview or a statement. police say because of the nature of the investigations, they can't say much without betraying the victim's trust. investigators are asking for anyone with information or other victims to come forward. >> i want victims out there to know, like if you have been a victim of somebody and it's old, you can still come forward. >> the mayor's office released a statement saying the allegations against jacobo are very serious, and that it's critical that san francisco seek justice for those who come forward. and supervisor hillary ronen is calling for hearings on how the city handles allegations of sexual assault in san francisco. christien kafton ktvu fox two news.

mulberry. home again. >> san francisco paused early this morning to mark the anniversary of the great 1906 san francisco earthquake and fire. city residents, many in period clothing, placed a commemorative wreath on lotta's fountain on market street. the estimated 7.9 magnitude quake killed 3000 people. it destroyed over 80% of the city and fires burned for 74 hours in the following days. now, as always, this anniversary comes with a warning that bay area residents need to be ready for the next large earthquake. at four, an official with the state earthquake authority said. many older homes are vulnerable. >> the vulnerability is that your house is not properly anchored to the foundation and the crawlspace walls. those short walls around the crawlspace don't have plywood bracing on them, and unfortunately, the damage is really significant. it can topple or slide off the foundation. >> she is urging people to apply for state grants to help brace and bolt their homes to the foundation. experts say there is

a near certainty of a quake the size of the northridge quake, striking the bay area in the next 30 years. sunny in some areas, foggy and others. this is a look at the fog rolling in over san francisco from sutro tower this afternoon. and joining us now to talk about all of that is meteorologist bret gonzales. when that fog rolls in, that's a change. >> yes. it signals a big time change. and it was amazing today because at 11 a.m. in san francisco, it was 70 degrees. then we start to have that fog bank just hug the coast. and the cooler air moved in. and we are now sitting in the 50s. so it dropped very, very rapidly today. and our temperatures are going down tomorrow. but we still will have some sunshine away from the coast. here's a look at today's high temperatures a good 23 degrees span anywhere from pacifica. at 58 degrees. it was 70 for the official high this morning in san francisco. otherwise the winner 81 degrees in morgan hill , east bay topped off at 80

degrees in santa rosa, gave it a good shot at 79 degrees. now, this is the scene again. the finger of fog working its way towards twin peaks in the city by the bay. the city of san francisco. above this deck of fog, we do have some high, thin clouds, roughly about 20,000ft associated with this. it's a weak trough, and all it's going to do is toss some high, thin cirrus clouds into our forecast. this area of low pressure out there is not going to affect us. 22 mile per hour wind gusts right now in throughout that san bruno gap. but around the peninsula we have slider winds and mountain view. otherwise a winds pretty much 10 to 15mph out of the southwest tonight. now currently our temperatures. very nice to go out and walk your dog. 65, in santa rosa. these temperatures are down however up to ten degrees in napa and in oakland compared to just 24 hours ago. so still under the influence of high pressure. but that weak trough is hanging in there. bringing us a fog will even wake up to some morning condensation in the form

of some drizzle from that fog bank. but steady temperatures will ride out through the weekend. tonight, overnight into the 40s and 50. very comfortable sleeping weather with mostly cloudy skies and then waking up with a drizzle around the coast and the bay. temperatures coming down gently. you won't even notice it too much east of the bay and to the north, our five day forecast. give it a peek. here we are storm free this weekend. but christina, i'm looking at rain returning right here to the bay area next weekend. >> we'll stay tuned for that. roberta. thank you. local groups are coming together to form an ad hoc safety net to monitor saturday's 420 event at san francisco's hippie hill. it's all a collaboration between the psychedelic church of ambrosia merchants from the haight ashbury neighborhood and several nonprofits. they're planning to provide water, medical aid, portable toilets and trash pickups. at this gathering, the city canceled an official 420 celebration this year because of a lack of funds. but the coalition says people will show

by people with disabilities. the federal suit was filed in 2017, advocating for the disabled, claiming that bart is violating their civil rights by not providing clean working elevators at bart stations. as part of the settlement, bart has

agreed to renovate its elevators and escalators and must dispatch a repair person within one hour of a breakdown. bart is to continue monitoring vandalism and unsanitary conditions. the judge's order states that bart denies the allegations and does not concede liability. the san francisco city attorney filed a lawsuit against oakland today over their decision to name or change the name of the oakland international airport. city attorney david chiu argues, renaming the hub san francisco bay oakland international airport would be trademark infringement. the port of oakland responded in opposition to that lawsuit, claiming the san francisco cannot lay claim to the geographically descriptive terms san francisco or claim exclusive rights to the san francisco bay. however, a trademark law attorney we spoke with says trademark is all about protecting consumers from confusion. >> all we really have to compare are the names, and they tend to give the first two words a lot of weight, because that's the

first thing that the person hears, that a consumer sees on their screen. when they're ordering their lift or when they're booking the flight. and so the fact that the two first two words are really similar, it's going to really lend itself to a finding of confusion. >> the lawsuit also alleges the name change would capitalize off sfo's reputation and pull in travelers who are not intending to fly into the east bay. mayor shang tao shared her take on the change of the name with the press release from the port of oakland. she explains the renaming could offer several benefits, saying in part, quote. notably, it could support the airport's efforts to secure more direct flights to additional destinations, enhancing convenience for travelers and potentially boosting tourism in oakland. oakland police shot and killed a murder suspect last night who was wanted in sacramento, ktvu has confirmed. the 17 year old dominique brandt . sacramento police say he shot and killed his girlfriend last month. michael rains, an attorney representing the officer, says the suspect came out of a home in west oakland
