i'm mike mibach. tonight the city held its official chinese new year celebration at city hall. a traditional lion dance kicked off tonight's event with dozens of people in attendance. ktvu is amber lee joins us now here in studio and amber, an exciting night in san francisco. and it's all leading up to that big parade. >> that's right mike, there was a lot of excitement at city hall tonight as community members join city leaders for the official celebration. this event kicks off the annual chinese new year parade. the traditional lion dance opens the city of san francisco's 2024 chinese new year celebration. the performance dazzles the audience in the rotunda of city hall. it's a display of pride in the chinese culture. when i see this event held for celebrating the lunar new year, i feel very proud and privileged of how the city are doing this for the for our community, for the chinese community. >> the joy, the traditions and

that san francisco is back. >> community members say this year of the dragon marks a recovery from the pandemic and anti-asian hate crimes. >> it's the time to celebrate. instead of looking at the bad things that we were subject to. >> chinese new year brings business to chinatown merchants hope this year will bring prosperity and progress. >> all the merchants in chinatown are ready are preparing for this date for myself, i get everything i stuck up all my inventories and i really talk to a lot of owners and they are ready to close later. the preparations are part of the anticipated return of the city's historic annual chinese new year parade. >> lunar new year. >> with our diverse asian community is really an important part of what makes us special and what makes us unique. that's the celebration that we are hosting here tonight. >> a filipino folk dance reflects the city's embrace of asian culture. a solo performance features a korean

leaders from business, academia and philanthropy. the conference will start tomorrow and go through february 24th. it will include conversations on top, policy issues facing states and territories. >> meantime, president biden is in san francisco tonight, part of a two day campaign trip. >> the president is hoping to raise some money as election season heats up. but as ktvu jana katsuyama shows us, not everyone is happy to see the president in the bay area. >> president biden arrived in san francisco on its campaign fundraising trip wednesday afternoon, greeted by speaker emerita nancy pelosi and congressman kevin mullin. >> it was an honor to be on the tarmac. i just thanked him for standing up for democracy, uh, at home and abroad. >> the president first stopped in san francisco's pacific heights neighborhood. secret service and k-9 units swept the perimeter where president biden attended high ticket fundraisers at private homes. guests lined up in cars for security checks, many inside to see the president. one woman, a fan of bernie sanders, said she is

throwing her support this year behind biden. >> i'm very excited he's done a really excellent job policy wise, the economy is recovering really well. jobs are back. inflation is down. >> former governor jerry brown was among the guests arriving for the event. during biden's speech, the president touched on a range of topics, saying, quote, we have a crazy s.o.b. like that guy putin and others and we always have to worry about nuclear conflict. but the existential threat to humanity is climate. around 5:20 p.m, the motorcade moved blocks away to the house of gordon getty, who hosted a small dinner for about 40 people. >> he's a remarkable president, and i think he deserves another terme. if they look at the facts, the facts are he's done a remarkable job in every aspect. >> at a nearby park, protesters gathered upset with biden's handling of the gaza war and we need joe biden to call for a ceasefire immediately, and we need him to condition aid and

stop selling arms to israel, not listening to our voices for over 130 days, i absolutely will not be voting for biden. president biden left around 640 to go to the fairmont hotel, all while protesters just blocks away continued to demonstrate that the president is expected to go to los altos hills on thursday for another fundraiser before returning to washington. in san francisco, jana katsuyama, ktvu fox two news. new at 11 oakland police have made an arrest in connection with a shooting from earlier this month. >> authorities say they also recovered an assat rie, extended magazine, guns and ammunition during the arrest. the shooting happened on february 11th on macarthur, not far from high street. a santa rosa man is facing a series of charges after police say they found him in possession of drugs and weapons. officers say on friday they arrested 37 year old cameron glover at a home in santa rosa. they say inside the house they found cocaine, marijuana and counterfeit adderall, as well as a scale and several firearms and ammunition

were seized. glover was booked into the sonoma county jail on five drug and weapons charges. >> the co-founder of google is facing a lawsuit over a deadly plane crash off the coast of half moon bay. the widow of the pilot, who was flying one of sergey brin's planes, filed a wrongful death lawsuit against him in santa clara county. google is named in the suit because it partially owned the plane. the pilot was flying from santa rosa to fiji with a stop in hawaii last may, when the plane went down off the san mateo county coast. the pilot, lance mclean, and the copilot were both killed. a problem with the plane's fuel tanks caused that plane to crash. >> still to come. in california, a woman detained in russia. what she's accused of doing and why the state department is calling her case a challenge. >> also, new numbers show one bay area based company is seeing a soaring revenue. the earnings report from nvidia, also a coalition of teachers banding together in the east bay. >> there demands for a raise and better benefits

us based charity. the family says karolina came to the u.s. for a work study program. her boyfriend tells fox she missed her family and went home to see them. >> so calm and she was like, yes, like, i'm i'm russian. i'm going home. like. like i'm fine. the state department says russia does not recognize dual citizenship, making karolina's case even more challenging. >> now to washington, where a seattle police officer who struck and killed a 23 year old graduate student with his patrol vehicle will not face charges, police say. officer kevin dave was driving 74 miles an hour in a 25 mile per hour zone when he struck janavi kandula in a crosswalk back in january. the officer was then seen on body cam calling dispatch for help and then performing cpr on the grad student. the king county prosecutor's office today announced that the officer will not face charges because there's a lack of evidence to prove a criminal case beyond a

reasonable doubt. >> and in new mexico, jury selection got started today in the trial involving the fatal shooting on the rust movie set, potential jurors are being asked questions about social media chatter and news coverage tied to the fatal shooting of cinematographer halyna hutchins. she was shot to death in 2021 as actor alec baldwin rehearsed with a gun on the set in santa fe. hannah gutierrez reed was responsible for the storage, maintenance and handling of firearms for that movie. she is facing an involuntary manslaughter charge. if convicted, she could face up to 18 months in prison and thousands of dollars in fines last month, baldwin was indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge in connection with that shooting and you can hear about the west coast top stories every weekday right here on ktvu. west coast rap with alex savage airs at 7:00 monday through friday, or you can find around the clock coverage at west coast rap.com. >> new at 11. i chipmaker nvidia has released its quarterly financial results showing the

company's revenue more than tripled and its profits rose nine fold. the santa clara based company has become one of the biggest winners of the artificial intelligence boom. last week, the company briefly eclipsed the market values of amazon and google. parent company alphabet before receding to the fifth most valuable tech company. nvidia stock has nearly doubled in just the last six months. now. overall on wall street, stocks ended the day mixed, but mostly higher. the dow was up more than 48 points. weakness in tech shares weighed heavily on the nasdaq. it closed down 49 points and the s&p finished the day up more than six points. >> coming up, a last ditch effort in the east bay. the hundreds of teachers who may soon strike if school districts do not make changes. >> also, oakland native zendaya giving back to her community her gift to the theater that helped start her career. >> and it is weather whiplash. i'm talking about the day that we will top off and the 70s. your weather forecast is coming up. on the flip side of this

on the east bay, picketed today, calling for a raise. smaller class sizes and more benefits. >> teachers in a number of districts have already authorized strikes as they work to negotiate their contracts. ktvu lamonica peters has more now on their demands. >> the east bay coalition for student success coordinated multiple rallies and dozens of people turned out to support the orinda education association on camino pablo orinda. teachers say they were offered a 3% raise, but they want 8. >> so we have chapters everywhere, standing in the streets, letting them know that our students are a priority. we want the best teachers for our

students, teachers from the dublin unified school district and pleasanton unified school district rallied here at the dublin sports grounds. >> the coalition is comprised of 21 local chapters of the california teachers association, including in antioch, pittsburgh and richmond. dublin educator monica lewis says they're fighting to put student needs first by having qualified teaching staff. that's fairly compensated. >> if we have fair contracts, the really big thing is getting effective teachers into the classroom. so with the funding, it's really important to make sure we have contracts that will retain and recruit the best teachers for our students. >> the coalition says it decided to rally as a last ditch effort before some local chapters of cta call for a strike across the east bay. they're essentially making no movement on what they're willing to offer. >> we know that dublin students deserve the best and that is salaries that keep up with the increased cost of living expenses. >> we reached out to the pleasanton unified school district, which declined to

comment. dublin unified school district says it hopes to reach an equitable agreement with competitive compensation for certificated employees, while also maintaining fiscal health for the district. >> we're one of the only districts that doesn't offer fully funded health care. they're also not honoring years of service credit for teachers who have been in the district, the association of pleasanton teachers says that they have a fact finding hearing. >> on february 26th, the dublin teachers association says that they haven't scheduled a hearing just yet. lamonica peters ktvu fox two news we are hearing from san francisco mayor london breed today after some business owners in the mission district took the first steps toward filing a lawsuit against the city over bike lanes. >> the business owners along valencia street say muni's decision to move the bike lane to the center of the road dramatically reduce the amount of available parking spaces, and that has led to fewer customers, as the mayor said, officials with mta are actively talking

with business owners, but there must be protected bike lanes on valencia street in some capacity . >> the goal is for safety in general, this is a thoroughfare for that bikes use. they're going to continue to use it, and we want to make sure that we're able to provide safely different modes of transportation down valencia street. but ultimately we have to make sure and that's what we're doing now is to explain to merchants that there are trade offs. >> the business owners say they want the center bike lane removed and want the city to compensate them for lost income. if the city denies that claim, the businesses plan to file a lawsuit. what a difference an evening makes. >> rain has now pushed out of the bay area. high pressure gently builds and in, and we have at least one day that will top off in the 70s. live weather camera looking out towards the salesforce tower. we can see it tonight. visibility is unlimited from oakland looking out towards san francisco, but to the north

of us, a quarter mile visibility in santa rosa. two and a half now in napa, and seven mile visibility in half moon bay. see this area to the east here. we will wake up tomorrow morning to some areas of dense fog and visibility down to one mile in throughout livermore, a dense fog advisory goes into place tonight, overnight from 2 a.m. until 10 a.m. tomorrow. all eyes are on this out here. it's an impressive area of low pressure, so let's track it together. watching our futurecast now, this is very interesting. tomorrow morning, sun bus at 650. notice the deck of cloudiness due to the areas of fog. as the day progresses, it wipes away and we will enjoy sunshine and drying out conditions. but look at this area of low pressure. it inches its way closer and closer to the bay area. but look at that. those are the clouds associated with this system. they start to lift up in a northerly direction. we will become mostly cloudy on friday, but still mild

. and then friday afternoon we do see those clouds dissipate by saturday morning. sun up partly cloudy skies. in fact, throughout the day on saturday, high pressure not charges in providing us with a glorious day. and by nightfall, partly cloudy skies, we step off for the chinese new year parade. and we're talking about 60 degrees for the parade and no rain on the parade. okay, if you're making weekend plans, heading to the high sierra, we have a lot of fresh, heavy cement, snow, lots of bright sunshine on saturday. we cloud up on sunday from that area of low pressure and snow is in the offing. on monday. but until then, tonight, overnight with the blanket of cloud cover, we are talking about temperatures into the 40. with the dense fog developing in the overnight hours. tomorrow becoming partly sunny daytime high temperatures. banking right between 59 degrees in san rafael to 66 degrees in san jose. but wait, it gets better. check out your saturday 72 degrees and the

south bay with that chance of rain returning by sunday night into your monday. nice to have a little break. >> thank you. roberta. emergency road repairs continued today to fix parts of highway 84 in alameda county that washed away during this week's heavy rain sky fox flew over the section of niles canyon road this afternoon, which is closed in both directions from old canyon road in fremont to main street in sunol. caltrans says it hopes to open at least one lane to traffic on friday at the earliest. >> foster city hosted a ribbon cutting today to mark the completion of its new levee improvement project. the project has been ten years in the making after fema found that foster city did not meet minimum flood protection standards in 2014, the current mayor of foster city says this $90 million project will address fema's issue and has an added benefit for local homeowners. >> we were put into fema flood zone under the federal government, so we needed to build the levee. otherwise we

presence of lead in its ever popular tumblers. the lawsuit was filed in california on february 1st by a seattle based firm. it alleges the maker of stanley cups misled consumers by not publicly confirming the presence of lead in its cups until last month. in a statement on its website, stanley tells its customers that no lead is present on the surface of any part of the product that comes into contact with consumer, as a low cost airline has announced it is expanding service at santa rosa's charles schulz airport, avello airlines says it is opening a new base there and adding new flights to boise, idaho. >> kalispell, montana. salem, oregon. and pasco, washington. that's in addition to its existing flights to vegas, burbank, bend, oregon and palm springs. the new base will mean two aircraft and 50 crew members will operate out of santa rosa. the new routes begin in may. >> well, as we've been telling you and showing you, san

francisco's chinese new year parade is on saturday night. more than 100,000 people are expected to line city streets to watch all of the floats. the dancers, the marching bands and the firecrackers, as ktvu tom vacar shows us those final touches are now under way. >> the chinese new year's float assembly barn on san francisco pier 54 is in full swing in anticipation of saturday's parade. the largest asian cultural event in north america. the 173 year old san francisco chinese new year's parade was first held in 1851. a combination of an american style parade and the ancient lantern festival. born in china, 2200 years ago, the signature floats here complement the many throngs of people in the parade, attending it, as well as those watching it on air or online worldwide. tied to float director stephanie mufson of the parade guys and her talented team of artists. it's a labor of love. what i take very seriously

is the importance of celebrating , and i take very seriously the importance of like ritual and tradition. >> it's something that actually means a lot to a lot of people, and that means a lot to me. knowing that what we're doing actually has so much meaning for so many people is really what makes this all worth it. >> historians say that parades with floats date back to the 13th century. middle ages, when churches used movable wagons to carry different sceneries for pageants, especially easter passion plays. floats are called floats. since the very first floats were on barges on london's river thames about 700 years ago to mark the yearly appointment of a new lord mayor for artists here on pier 54. this most public of displays is actually very personal to my late grandmother was you're the dragon. >> uh, so this year is very special to me. also. and i'm like fourth generation san franciscan. my grandfather grew up in chinatown town, so, um,

i'm very excited to be part of the parade this year. each year seems to bring more surprises and, you know, more, um, it bring more joy to my heart as an artist from the bay area to be a part of this event at this scale. >> and it involves everybody coming together and celebrating. >> for sarah witzig her dragon art is very special. >> well, i'm actually the year of the dragon, so this is particularly special to me to be able to work on this. um, and yeah, it's, it's a very fantastic like. yeah, mystical, whimsical concept. >> the work on these floats will continue right up until the day of the parade and well into it. the idea of it is to make sure that everything will tickle the fancy and delight of every person watching, whether there or anywhere else in the world. tom vacar katie icu, fox two news a 103 year old san francisco music school just expanded its mission district campus. >> city leaders and community

members came out to celebrate the community music center. the expansion will give 900 more students access to the music school. currently, it serves more than 4000 students, providing many with tuition assistance. students have been learning and performing out of a victoria style house since 1921, and now the community music center can further its mission of removing barriers to arts by utilizing the neighboring house. >> this neighborhood, like our city, has been through a lot of challenges and it's so important that we really shine a light on a lot of the great opportunities, the joy, the happiness that so many people invested. not just money, but they invested their time and resources into making this happen. and music brings joy. the arts bring joy. it brings people together. and this is really a uniter. >> the community music center is located on capp street near 20th in san francisco's mission district. >> actress in oakland native zendaya made a $100,000 donation
