saturated bay area sees even more heavy rain, leading to localized flooding and a rare warning in san francisco. this is ktvu fox two news at 730. the rain and a lot of it poured down, inundating streets and sidewalks in the city. thanks for being with me on this tuesday night. i'm heather holmes. the flooding, as you can see here, just sent water rushing through several locations in the city, including this spot on franklin street in the marina. joel caught the flooded intersection near fort mason, jokingly commenting on x. luckily i crossed the franklin river before it got too deep. a flash flood warning was in effect earlier this afternoon for san francisco, and has since expired in the north bay, the rain brought rising creeks, streams and rivers and soaked downtown towns, including novato, where the rain came down hard at times, people were bundled up and looking for cover along grand avenue as a burst of rain rolled through that area
7:32 pm
and along with the heavy rain, drivers also dealing with gusty winds. this video shows what it was like leaving san francisco and getting onto the bay bridge. the chp reminding everyone to slow down in these wet conditions and to be on the lookout for standing water. for more on where this storm is right now, let's go to our meteorologist, roberta gonzales. >> heather, the brunt of the activity has moved due east of the bay area, but in its wake, we have a whole lot of water standing and no where to go. just check out how much rainfall accumulated in san francisco. and most of this was between 12:00 and 3:00 today. so that's why it caused the urban and street and stream flooding. and you can see that it was widely spread through la honda, santa rosa and orinda as well. and all of this accumulated in a very short amount of time. this is why the national weather service has continued with its flood watch for the entire bay area. you don't see that very often. meanwhile, this is it. the core,

the center of the area, low pressure. it's breaking off from its initial band. so that's the cut off low there. this is the band that interfered with your afternoon today, and we still have some scattered rain showers in the wake of that band. san rafael, novato, nicasio, richmond, all with some light to moderate rainfall, hit miss. scattered rain showers now noted around the peninsula. we just had a cell roll across san francisco towards the bay bridge, so it's very slippery there at this hour. and then meanwhile, we see that the scattered showers are moving due east to the hayward area. a nice little cell right there, right now, just outside of hayward, anywhere from hesperia boulevard to industrial parkway. so it's wet this evening as people try to make their tracks on the bay bridge, heading home. also on 680 through alum rock into the eastern foothills. and we still have a lingering shower in the santa cruz mountains. some of this adding up to a quarter of an inch an hour. and this is why we do have that flood advisory for marin sonoma and also santa cruz counties. lots of standing water. here's the golden gate

bridge. luckily the wind is under ten miles per hour, but some of these winds do increase with the passage. of these thunderstorms tonight. most of the activity again due east. tomorrow morning setup is at 651. mostly cloudy skies. activity remaining to the north of us, scraping across the north bay by lunchtime. here's your afternoon. a hit and miss scattered shower, mainly dry for your wednesday and during the afternoon we'll start to see a few sunny breaks. but let's back up tonight. an isolated, scattered shower under mostly cloudy sky into the 40s. tomorrow daytime highs 50s and 60s. outside numbers 64 degrees and here is your extended forecast. yes from top to bottom of the day. your thursday will be a fun sunday. and then friday a secondary completely dry day. there will be no rain on the chinese lunar parade on saturday and 71 degrees. that's my forecast high for san jose. generally, everybody will be slightly above normal in the

60s. next shot of precipitation returning right here to the bay area will be late sunday into your monday. heather >> okay, i am looking forward to those breaks. thanks so much, roberta. well the string of storms really wreaking havoc on bay area roads as drivers dodge a series of new and worsening potholes. but despite all the damage, officials say there are fewer potholes compared to this time last winter. in 2022, we saw over 23,000 potholes, with more than 8000 in the month of january alone. this was according to caltrans. this year , well, we've seen a little more than 2000. >> well, it's something that we have to watch. it's very difficult to predict where water will go and what damage will actually take place. >> in the past five years, the city of oakland has paid out $27 million in personal injury claims for potholes, uneven sidewalks and fallen tree branches. and be sure to stay up to date on this latest storm by downloading the free ktvu weather app. it has current conditions live, interactive

protesters in san francisco shut down a section of market street today by blocking the intersection at montgomery street. they're calling for a ceasefire in gaza and say they want senators alex padilla and laphonza butler to reject additional funding for military aid for israel. yesterday, another group of protesters demanding a cease fire briefly shut down traffic on san francisco's central freeway. well, that demonstration, coming on the heels of the united states today vetoing a third united nations resolution that would have demanded an immediate cease fire in gaza. u.s. ambassador linda thomas-greenfield says that passing it could have derailed complex negotiations that several countries have been working on. she insists a hostage release should be part of the deal to stop the fighting, and that this latest proposal did not include that. this comes as israel, israeli troops close in on rafah in southern gaza, where refugees and hamas fighters have fled. u.s. officials say they are trying to convince israel to

avoid a major ground assault there. meantime, un ambassador for from both palestine and israel argued today over the outcome of any cease fire resolution in the message given today to israel. >> with this veto is that it can continue to get away with murder, with a cease fire in place, hamas will regroup, rearm and their next attempt at genocide against israeli will only be a question of when, not if. >> a white house spokesperson said they will continue meetings this week in the middle east to work on a hostage deal and a temporary cease fire. well, earlier today on the floor, i had a chance to speak with professor stephen zunes. he's a political science professor at the university of san francisco who specializes in u.s. middle east policy. and he says with today's vote, the u.s. is increasing, isolating itself in the international community and hurting its credibility. >> for example, in ukraine, we're trying to mobilize the

international community to challenge russian aggression. their violations of international law, their bombing of civilian areas and the like. and yet, by supporting israel, which is also occupying countries and killing civilians and is in violating international legal norms, this perceived double standard i it seems to be weakening the standing of the united states in the world, and it could have some unfortunately some, uh, negative diplomatic, uh, repercussions. >> professor zunes says the biden administration may also be losing the support of the american people. he says polls show two thirds of americans and more than 80% of democrats support a ceasefire, while president biden is back here in california to begin three days of campaign fundraising. the president arrived in los angeles earlier today and is attending a fundraiser at the home of longtime democratic party boosters hayman, cheryl saban. tomorrow, president biden is set to deliver a policy speech near
