7:15 pm
with this event about why it's important to cut back on drinking sodas and other sugary drinks? well, we've been pushing ever since measure h was passed in 2017 to push oakland ers to get away from the sugar sweetened beverages and drink more water. lots of things are impacted by the consumption of sugar sweetened beverages, including diabetes, hypertension , obesity and dental cavities, which we know in a lot of our vulnerable communities. in oakland happen at a higher incidence than they do in other parts of the city. so our fair tomorrow is just going to be pushing that message of getting away from the sugary sweetened beverages, drinking more water, kicking off june, which is going to be proclaimed. the official oakland drinks water month and just really want to get our families out to enjoy this fair. it's all free. so come out and see us at birdies carter between 12 and 4 it's going to be a lot of activities and great messaging from our grantees. yeah. so talk about some of those activities. what can people expect tomorrow? so we have over 20 grantees that are

doing work with some of the revenue that comes from the sugar sweetened beverage tax. they're doing a lot in our communities to educate people about nutrition and the benefits of drinking water and also doing a lot to mitigate some of those impacts with physical activity as well as nutrition information, dietary things and things like that. so our grantees will be tabling to give out information, sign people up and get people engaged and involved in the work that they're doing. and also will be doing some giveaways and some contests. we got a dunk contest. we've got some other fun things, some dancing and just a lot of activities to get people up and moving and educated about the benefits of drinking water in oakland, up and moving is always important. i think we should step back and point out this event is being funded through revenue from the city's tax on sugar sweetened drinks. obviously we've reported quite a bit on that. it was adopted a few years ago and according to a ucsf study, the purchases of
7:17 pm
sugary drinks in oakland have dropped by 27. what have you seen from your perspective on the impact that tax has had in the city of oakland? well, it's had a great impact, actually. the tax has been in place since 2017, and although we haven't really had a lot of front facing events where the public can learn about the impacts of the tax, we've got organizations in the city of oakland, including ruth, including community kitchens, including healthy points of sale and many others that are doing a lot of great work with the revenue that's coming from this tax. and what is showing is that with people becoming more educated and being given more choices, that they are choosing to make healthier choices and drink more water. yeah. and really that was the goal behind the tax. are you surprised by what you're seeing but by the outcome? well i'm not that surprised because as a resident of oakland, i grew up here, graduated high school
7:18 pm
here. i have been in those vulnerable communities where we have food deserts here. we have a lot of liquor stores and corner stores that sell mainly sugar sweetened beverages and other not the healthiest choices. but when given more information and given more choices, then people generally make better decisions. and so what i'm saying is just the community learning more and the community wanting better. and so they're making better choices. i'm really happy to see that the tax is having a positive effect. the revenue has gone down each year, which indicates that people are buying less sugary beverages and we hope to continue to see the revenue go down. but also we want to continue to see the great work that's happening in our city around nutritious meals and drinks and pushing this information and education out into the community to keep going. yeah. and hopefully see better health outcomes for people long term. really appreciate you coming on tonight to talk about this important event in oakland. again it's the oakland drinks water oakland drinks water community event happening tomorrow afternoon

advisor george, nice to see you on this friday evening. first, how important is it for the us economy to now have the uncertainty surrounding the debt deal finally behind us? now their mission critical confidence is all we have. we have a piece of paper says it's a dollar. what does it really mean? it's got to be backed up by the full faith of the government that we pay our bills. and this really drives the global currency. we have a safe currency for the entire world. no other economy is as strong or as transparent. even though we make mistakes all the time, we correct them. that's a transparency part. so having this debt ceiling met and not having a fiscal cliff is mission critical. all right. so we obviously saw another unexpectedly strong jobs report for the month of may, even as the fed continues to work on trying to cool off this economy with interest rate hikes, why george, do you think this economy is just so resilient, our economy? alex is incredible. this defies everything that it
7:28 pm
is so robust that we've created this huge number of jobs. again but last three months, we've averaged about 380,000 new jobs. economy only needs 150,000 to break even. the federal reserve would like to have a negative jobs report. that means less people working, less people fueling the economy, increasing inflation. so we're just not we're just not seeing that inflation is about 5. they're going to probably, you know, look at raising again, just to keep just to keep people from borrowing. but in spite of that, our economy is robust, people are working, and we're really the envy of the entire world. i mean, nobody does this. it's pretty amazing. incredible. yeah. so what do you see next? next steps? i mean, you mentioned your expectation with the feds, but what about this potential for a recession now, heather, we've been talking about recession now for almost two years. it's getting a little old. i don't see it. i mean, when you have a recession, you have more millions of people laid off of work. and our unemployment rate is about 3.7,
7:29 pm
3.5. that is incredibly low. so that means that a recession is not around the corner. i mean, eventually, if you look at the product life cycle of an economy , yeah, eventually there's a recession. but we just have too much strength in our economy, our rule law or monetary system . and today was just a good example of getting this debt ceiling done, extending it out to two years. and the big play was really is that, you know, your social security, your medicare, your medicaid, the military and the debt service, which is 85, 87% of our budget approximately is done. we're arguing about a few smaller programs that are important but smaller. but we all agreed to move forward. and that was that was the one beautiful thing today with kevin mccarthy, speaker of the house. he couldn't do it by himself. he couldn't do it just with the republican vote. they weren't all supporting him. and he kind of took a risk and he negotiated with the democrats. that's the way it should work, a negotiation. and they came up with a reasonable conclusion. and we're moving forward now. so, yeah, this is a big one and it's behind us. yeah, great. great to see that compromise in washington. it doesn't happen
7:30 pm
all that often, but it's nice when it does, especially in this case. finally on the jobs front, you know, with this may jobs report, did we get any signs, any signals or indications that hiring might start to slow at any point in the near future? it kind of doesn't matter if it slows a little bit because we now we increase the available jobs available. i mean, people leave their job. they get a job in seven weeks. it's just and the service economy is still on fire. people are spending money. and so there's really no end in sight for this. i mean, it's these are big numbers that we're throwing out. again, i said break even. 150,000 were like double that in this report. it's amazing. yep. just cruising along this economy. it's incredible. all right. thanks so much, george. really appreciate it. have yourself a great weekend. all right. you guys have a good weekend, too. thank you. thank you. a changing insurance landscape here in california. we take a closer look at the decision by allstate to stop selling new home policies here. and how that decision might affect prices.

he kept busy cleaning a section of coliseum way near 50th avenue in east oakland. now he'll be here for six hours because he's got the day off, but he also tells me he picks up trash after work and on weekends and it's not just oakland city streets. hey, how's it going? this is wong on 880 in san leandro after he saw trash on the freeway, he called the chp and this officer blocked traffic with his car. yeah, so i was driving and i noticed this trash is going to, like, just help out. clear together. they cleaned up the mess that ended the day. not only does the trash affect people's quality of life, but also like the animals on his social media, where his handles paying, whether he posts before and after shots. he uses a gopro camera to document his work and for safety. it was awesome to see that, like someone was already going all the way from livermore to come help clean oakland up. amanda brunner is also an engineer who lives in east oakland. she showed up to help after seeing one of wang's post on reddit. i thought that, you know, this is my own

us will be ordered to resume paying those loans. fox battle rivera has more now on the confusing time for students. the last three years have been a relief for maya sanko without the burden of having to pay her student loans. i've had a lot more comfort in terms of my bottom line, for sure. but the pandemic pause on student loan payments is set to end around late august, posing a challenge for sonko. if you think about inflation and how it's been persistent, my costs aren't going down and the department of education congress last year refused a white house request for more money to the federal office that oversees the student loan system, which could make its job of notifying millions of borrowers to resume paying their

bills a lot harder. what that means for borrowers is essentially that they could experience longer wait times, not be able to get in contact with the people that they need to. the education department says it will continue to quote, work closely with servicers to prioritize providing quality customer service to borrowers. but they're urging congress to fund the president's 2024 budget request to provide them with additional resources. still, some critics are skeptical of the agency's need for more money, but it doesn't necessitate a huge infusion of cash. it requires going back to what they used to do and doing it again. republican lawmakers are also wary that any extra funds could be used for the president's student debt, canceling plan, which is expected to cost about $400 billion. if you want to take out a loan, you should have that ability, but you shouldn't then expect somebody else to go pay it for you. whatever happens. sonko only hopes she and other borrowers get the answers

something we'll be watching closely, at least over the next several days. right now, though, we still have some low clouds and fog right near the immediate coastline and closer to pacifica or half moon bay, i should say, and pillar point and current numbers out there. it's kind of chilly in san francisco, 5360s around the bay and the warmest locations inland right now in the 70s, we still have a bit of a breeze for this evening. right now you can see a fair field of southwest breeze at about 16 miles an hour. and in san jose out of the northwest at 15 and sfo gusting to 28 miles an hour. here is our live camera looking out toward the bay. still a bit of some haze out there. not much in the way of fog here, but still we will have some patchy fog, regroup near the coast and maybe right around the bay first thing tomorrow morning, temperatures will start to will start out your weekend will be in the 50s. forecast models kind of picking up on some of that low cloud cover and then into the afternoon hours, those forecast highs from the 60s to the 70s and the 80s, some more 80s showing up over the next
