elizabeth holmes will start her federal prison sentence tuesday after being convicted of defrauding investors in her blood testing startup there knows she prepares for her surrender tomorrow. i'm sure she has a lot of regrets, was also ordered to pay half of $452 million in restitution to her victims. you cannot lie in to see. instead she wanted to double and triple down, perhaps because of the fear. of failing . she was beginning to bind to the media from jim cramer and on the cover of forbes, calling her the next steve jobs. so rather than admitting failure, she chose to double down and then so do and she began to lie. holmes's former partner, ramesh sunny ball, wani, has been ordered to pay the remainder of the restitution and is already in prison after being convicted in a separate trial, pepperoni says, although homes has been ordered to serve 11 years, there's a good chance she won't serve her full sentence. there's also the first step act, which was passed in late 2018, which based on the length of her

sentence, will earn her another year off per sentence. then she's eligible to get a year and the halfway house or home confinement, so my estimates shall serve 7.5 years in prison , presuming she doesn't get into any trouble even as holmes's critics complain, minimum security, federal prison isn't a hard way to serve time. pepperoni says she will still feel the isolation of being away from home and will most likely be focused on trying to win her appeal. it's harder to manage the appeal in prison, and i would expect when she's not working, exercising, sleeping or program and she will be in the library working aggressively all day every day began serving a 13 year prison sentence in april and is incarcerated in southern california. as for homes, she's still says she's innocent. lamonica peters, ktvu, fox two news. all right. thank you. lamonica the preliminary hearing for the man accused of killing tech executive in san francisco is scheduled to get underway today. fema momeni is accused of

killing cash up founder bob lee in the early morning hours of april. 4th prosecutors say the men argued about lee's relationship with momeni sister . many has pled not guilty. his attorney has said many acted in self defense. police in florida are investigating a shooting along the beach boardwalk in hollywood beach, which is just about 25 miles north of miami. nine people were injured, including children, the gunfire along the crowded beach on memorial days and people running for cover. six adults and three children were hurt in that shooting. the victims include a one year old police say there was an argument between two groups of people before the shots were fired. you're like 67 shots, people start running and start touching down. i was in the store and i heard a couple of gunshots. i ran over and everybody was laying on the ground. it was pretty scary. police detained one person and they are still searching for another suspect. we're now

hearing reaction to the decision by state farm insurance to no longer accept new applications for homeowners insurance in california. state farm says it based the decision on the rising risk of wildfires in california and an increase in construction costs. state farm released a statement saying quote it's necessary to take these actions now to improve the company's financial strength. i was pretty shocked for a couple of reasons. one might actual personal home is ensured by them. and to its who i refer all my clients to causing me a little alarmed. because is this gonna be the first sign of the other insurance companies to follow? state farm says it will continue to ensure existing customers in california. there's a warning in san francisco and increased efforts to combat the spread of the dangerous street drug tranq . authorities say. drug dealers are mixing tranq, which is also

said they were busy over the holiday weekend with a number of dui arrests after crashes. the first happened on homan avenue and summerfield road sunday afternoon, where passenger was taken to the hospital for moderate injuries. 35 year old anthony manos was arrested felony d u i. another crash happened just hours later sunday night on dutton avenue. and investigators say a man crashed into a parked car hurt someone in that car, officers say 25 year old eric perez martinez was arrested there for felony d u i one man is in the hospital this morning after rescuing a child at a santa cruz county beach. it happened last night at panther state beach just north of the city of santa cruz. firefighters say two men successfully pulled a 12 year old child out of the ocean waters. after these, they spotted the child struggling. one of those men was rushed to the hospital after the rescue. his condition is not known. the other man who was helping the child was not hurt. emergency

well that was the lighting of. diablo's rotating beacon was lit up overnight in honor of military service members who died while fighting for our country. the ceremony was held at the veterans memorial building in danville last night . it started just before sunset. institutionalizing this partnering with the town of danville. to turn that beacon on your grandchildren and my grandchildren will see that beacon every memorial day. for years to come. the mount diablo rotating beacon is also lit on veterans day in the anniversary of pearl harbor each year. a

is a bail hearing in san mateo county for the woman accused in the death of a social media influencer, christina gore. connie hired the florida woman, vivian gomez, to administer silicone injections at a burlingame hotel. connie had a bad reaction to the shots and died. gomez who does not have a cosmetology or medical license in california. now being held on $200,000 bail. her attorney says gomez is not a flight risk and is asking the court to decrease her bail to $50,000. a new study finds young adults need to do a better job eating healthier researchers from around the world, including canada and china, found a poor diet and college leads to health issues later in life, including obesity , respiratory illnesses and depression. bad diets, including regular consumption of high calories and sugar, sugary foods and beverages, such as microwave microwaveable meals and energy drinks. psychologists say

leaders of transit agencies are calling on the. the transit agencies warned that if the money doesn't come, it will have a devastating impact. transit leaders plan to push the governor to support the additional funding at an event in sacramento today. now bart is one of those agencies pushing for help from the state arts board says without the funding, bart may be forced to reduce trains to once an hour cut weekend service and close stations. the board says it's been trying to restore passenger confidence by having police officers patrolled the trains and stations more often. bart's police chief and the board president plan to take questions from the media at that event this morning. in alameda police issued dozens of citations this past weekend to people who gathered for a large sideshow. hundreds of people were attending a muscle car event that eventually turned into a massive sideshow, ktvu elissa harrington reports. thick dark tire marks cover this

bakery was recently profiled by ktvu s amberleigh for a series on san francisco's chinatown. it has been in business for years. it's known for its cakes and other pastries. police are investigating after someone falsely reported a shooting at a southern california mall. that report prompted a heavy police response at the ontario malt mills mall in san bernardino county yesterday afternoon. investigators say the reports came in after a group of people ran through the mall. ontario police tweeted multiple 911 calls were made claiming a person had a gun and gunshots were heard. no shots were fired, and no one was injured. the united states is just one week away from defaulting on our national debt. president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy reached a compromise deal to raise the debt ceiling, but now the hurdle is clearing congress ktvu jana katsuyama reports why that could be a challenge. congress is now facing the battle over the nation's debt limit when members return from

the holiday weekend tuesday the debt deal reached by president biden and house speaker kevin mccarthy over the weekend represents a compromise requiring both parties to bring hardline progressives and hardline conservatives on board in order to pass the deal and avoid a default on the nation's debts. president biden monday said he's been reaching out to people in both parties have spoken. remember the members? whole bunch of people. fema boat starts. speaker. mccarthy claimed victory in a tweet monday night, saying historic 2.1 trillion spending cut and adding republicans are changing the culture and trajectory of washington. and we're just getting started, but republicans did not get the deep cuts they proposed, and some are skeptical , worried that mccarthy's deal doesn't go far enough. the question that everybody's strolling with it. is it enough ? i haven't committed yes or no. yet the 99 page bill is a two year deal that would suspend the debt limit through january 2025

5 53 alameda county prosecutors have dismissed murder charges against the man accused of shooting and killing his ex wife's neighbor. it happened in fremont in march. 2022 a 77 year old man said the neighbor was threatening him and that's why he fired shots. the alameda county district attorney dropped charges, saying the shooting was in self defense. the family of the victim says he was having a mental health episode and had not been aggressive in the past. the judges ruled that contra costa county prosecutors have disproportionately targeted black people with special circumstances gang related charges. the decision by contra costa county judge david goldstein last week found that black defendants were more than 40% likely to be targeted with special circumstance gang murder charges than non black defendants. these criminal enhancements carry longer prison sentences and can eliminate the

place. happened here in the bay area back in march, a federal judge in san jose sentenced homes to 11 years in prison for fraud and conspiracy. holmes was convicted of fleecing investors of hundreds of millions of dollars to invest in her blood testing startup company theranos her crime, bringing in and spending that money when holmes knew the technology behind the company did not work. she claimed her blood testing devices could detect hundreds of diseases. with just a few drops of blood that was part of her sentence. she has been ordered to pay more than $450 million in restitution to some of those investors, billionaires like rupert murdoch and the walton family, which owns walmart. i'm sure she has a lot of regrets wishing she could have done things differently. the irony is a lot of defendants make decisions they think will help them. but in the end, they look back and say, well, decisions i made exacerbated my struggle, so she's very fortunate to have a lot of support. people still standing alongside her, but it doesn't change. she has a very long journey ahead of her. holmes has two young children
