university of san francisco's school of management, he says a compromise is necessary. we have to get a deal because the government spends a certain amount, so if we didn't get a deal, there would be a lot of chaos. um another question is, should we lower the debt gdp ratio for the united states going forward, but that's a that's a longer term discussion, so i think they'll sell it to both. sides one will say we can't spending and we, uh added more of our programs, and the other will say we didn't cut a lot of our major programs on the biden side, so i think that's what both will say now. under the bill, nondefense spending will be relatively flat. it will also expand work requirements for those on food stamps, restart student loan payments and cut funding for the i. r s the campaign is intensifying for the 2024 race for the white house, especially among the growing field of republican candidates, former president donald trump and florida governor ron dissenters will be

which the surface we travel along the planet and you know, based on that velocity, we can actually extract the information about, um, interior structure of mars. scientists have other concerns about where to build the home base on mars. besides avoiding quake prone areas, researchers recommend construction be near some ice deposits on the martian surface so that the research station workers have a source of water nearby. coming up at 5 46 this morning those planning to ride bart in the east bay today could experience half hour delays. bart workers are repairing tracks between the rock region horrendous stations, which are closed this weekend. but shuttles are running between both stations during service returns tomorrow. more track work is planned for june 10th and the 11th as well. two of the beare money from the state to avoid severe cuts and service and staffing. both bart and muni say they are still struggling, struggling to recover from the record low ridership during the pandemic. at a time when federal
5:47 am
funding is also running out. the two transit agencies say they may be forced to drastically scale back service, especially late at night and on weekends. for people that work on the weekends. people that want to go to ball games and you know that it's i think it would be a really tough way to go if they if they shut it down on the weekends, and i believe that it should be, they should prioritize like even on weekends to or late night service because you got people who also work in a weekend or coming home late at night. concern over safety is also playing a role in the declining ridership numbers. a recent survey by the bay area council found 45% of the people who currently do not ride bart say they're worried about crime. i'm hoping 11 of these days. bart can improve on security. more police on the trains. yeah it's not enough of that. there's people writing those rails all day long, and i see him. everybody sees him. bart says
5:48 am
it's trying to increase ridership by increasing police patrols on all of its trains and at the stations. the transit agency also plans to update its gates to make it more difficult for writers to avoid paying fares. alright 5. 47 is your time right now you're looking live from our camera pointing toward the east shore emeryville , of course, berkeley in the distance there, as well as albany. triple a expects most of the people who travel over the long holiday weekend that includes people returning home today and tomorrow as well. part of the reason why so many people in the bay area are hitting the roads is because gas prices are certainly down compared to this time last year, ktvu is bailey o. carroll spoke with drivers about taking a road trip this holiday weekend. oh i lied to you. sorry right now, the average price for a regular tank of gas in california is $4.84. that's down significantly from this time last year when the price was $6.08, those high prices caused people to cut back
5:49 am
on driving wherever and whenever they could, including holiday weekend road trips this year could be a different story. they've been going down a lot, and i like that expects about 37 million people will drive to their destinations. that number is up 6% from last year. no doubt some people are being motivated by the lower gas prices to 75. but the $1.25 drop in california is not enough for drivers like walnut creek resident robert clint been doing a lot of traveling like that. not a lot of road trips. not because of gas problem is they come down slow. they go up fast. coming down slow. they never quite go down far enough. so we're kind of stuck with with with a high base price. gas prices are just one facet of expenses that have come down slightly. and while every little bit helps inflation is still up on many everyday i double digit inflation. everything you buy in california. uh you know, everything helps. it's really
5:50 am
hard for the middle class. you know, i don't know how they do it. driver we spoke to said they would feel most comfortable paying about $3 a gallon right now the highest price for a gallon of regular gas in the bay area is in sonoma and san mateo counties at $4.98, the cheapest average price for a gallon of gas is in santa clara county, $4.81 in the newsroom. i'm bailey o'carroll, ktvu, fox two news. it is coming up on 5 50 this morning. starting today, fire agencies will be doing controlled burns in the north bay, calif. are will be overseeing the work along how we won 28 near the canyon creek resort in the town of winters. firefighters will be burning dry grass off about 80 acres. operations start at nine o'clock today, tomorrow and wednesday and are set to finish by five o'clock each day. there will be several fire agencies in the area and smoke is likely to be visible in solano and yolo counties, and some roads will only have one lane for use by local traffic. the cooler
5:51 am
weather is certainly nice for the controlled burns and getting some of those grasses. yeah, under control. and steve says the weather is what today staying cool. no doubt about it here. we'll take a look at the highest attempts from yesterday, which runs seasonably cool again. i mean, sacramento was only 78 fairfield, 74. santa rosa kent field right at 70. redwood city, santa cruz were closed. livermore was only 66 degrees oakland 59 in the city was only 58 watch. the thunderstorms just go bonkers here. mendocino county lake county. that low circulating right off the marine coast is now south, but it did trigger some activity for many, including drizzle or very light rain, but the thunderstorms are the big story fifties on most of the temps san carlos sunnyvale right at 50. most locations are because of the cloud cover. they're not really changing all that much onshore breeze more so than a win so far, but that breeze will pick up again. the low is on its way south and as it does it, still spending in some clouds, so it's a cool to mild pattern. drizzle looks like it will be with us again. nights
5:52 am
and mornings, probably through wednesday. couple one hundred's here in the mix ceremony. you see the loan right there. so activity farther south, maybe a little more in the way of cloud cover farther north. if you can clear that fog back and i get a little more sun, but look at the isle. i mean, just an amazing amount being forecast here all the way into june 5th so 50 sixties coast in bay water temps have come up, so that does make a little bit of a difference. sun and clouds. if you can get that fog to burn off, it's a slow process. this pattern is not changing all that much. upper fifties low sixties to very low seventies in areas it should be in the low eighties by now, after wednesday, though, there are some hints of at least a little bit of a warm up, you guys thank you. the white house and republicans strike attended the deal on raising the debt ceiling. coming up a look at the two key elements of the proposal as we are exactly one week away from the country going into default, and san francisco had its carnival celebration after the break, we're going to show you the bright colors and energetic sounds from the event.
