women don't know the opportunities exist, so i get a lot of major league teams, for example, talk about applications. i mean, it is 95% young white males, so i think really trying to spread the word that this is 100% something that any woman can do. but the chase continues to achieve that elusive level playing field opportunities are not the same for women and men graduating, um , you know in in any field doesn't have to be sports. you're young guy or girl. we're gonna be on three different fields today as for opportunities to play sports, mendoza says strides are being made at the u. this level. but even with 50 years of title nine, there's a lot of work left to do was talking to a high school coach yesterday. um because the baseball team just had this fundraiser they raped $250,000 for the baseball program and softball program is just trying to literally get grass on the field. disparities like that hurts my heart. join me in the women's sports foundation, which is why mendoza

5:30 am
yeah alright, well, steve paulson's here he has your forecast for march. 31st indeed . alright thirties for a few out there. palo alto is still in there at 37. santa rosa was but some low clouds came in so 41 there, but it's cold enough. there's a lot of 30 showing up and plenty of low clouds more banking up, i'd say north of san francisco than south, so i mixed with some low clouds. but still some sunshine today, so we'll say hello friday, but low clouds , thirties and forties on the low sun and clouds breezy kind of cool tonight, but at least no rain here forecast and temperatures. they're bumping up a teeny bit, but still well below average. never below average, always above mr sal castaneda. all good out there, my friend mostly. yeah you know, we've had a couple of things pop up, and then they went away and it is nice and early, so when problems go away, the freeway's clear out, you can see traffic on the bay bridge approach looks pretty good and 24 traffic. also looking very nice looking at contra costa county. and it's relatively light. so we're off to a good

giants lost to the yankees five. nothing yesterday was the orange and blacks first season opener in new york city since 1956 when they were actually still the new york giants. san francisco's loss came despite a record breaking performance by pitcher logan web. he had 12 strikeouts , which is the most ever by a giant starter. on opening day. logan pitched about as good a game as he could have hoped, and all of us could have hoped. i thought he attacked the strike zone with all of his pitches. it was as efficient as we've seen him in a long time. a lot of swinging, missed just excellent outing by logan. yankees superstar aaron judge hit a home run in his first at bat against the giants. the team was hoping he'd be doing that for them trying to get him during the off season. the northern california native hit 62 home runs last season, breaking roger maris's american league single season record. by the way, you can watch tomorrow's giants game against the yankees, right here on ktvu channel two. alright

class into its hall of honor. women from the sixties the seventies each decade in the success that they've had that to me is what blew me away is the fact that it was 12 women. among the 12 was former softball star jessica mendoza, who graduated from stanford in 2002 as its all time leader in batting average hits and home runs. she then went on to win two olympic medals, including gold in athens in 2004. after hanging up the cleats. mendoza's big career opportunity came in the mail dominated world of major league baseball broadcasting when espn hired her as a field reporter on the popular show baseball tonight, so i'm on the field, but i'm like, can i get a screen ? i want to break down my trout. did you see what he's doing? the back leg and it really was my bosses that were like, let's just put you in the booth. jess like this is why the yankees paid him $155 million for this game tonight after joining the
5:56 am
baseball tonight crew. mendoza made history in 2015 by becoming the first woman to serve as an analyst in the booth for a nationally televised big league game. that didn't sit well with some who took to social media and talk radio to say that she didn't belong there. but mendoza soon learned how to deal with the noise. the obstacles actually came more within myself and understanding how i was going to deal with the doubt and like the hate that was coming towards me. um, because really, it's about do i believe in myself? and once i did that? i was like, all right, let's go, did go marking other firsts, including becoming the first woman to serve as a world series analyst on a national broadcast in 2020. mendoza says there are more jobs for women in baseball than many may realize, however, those opportunities need to be sought a lot of young girls and women don't know the opportunities exist, so i get a lot of major league teams, for
5:57 am
example, talk about applications. i mean, it is 95% young white males, so i think really trying to spread the word that this is 100% something that any woman can do. but the chase continues to achieve that elusive level playing field opportunities are not the same for women and men graduating. um you know in in any field doesn't have to be sports. you're young guy or girl. we're gonna be on three different fields today as for opportunities to play sports , mendoza says strides are being made at the youth level. but even with 50 years of title nine, there's a lot of work left to do was talking to a high school coach yesterday. um because the baseball team just had this fundraiser. they raised $250,000 for the baseball program and softball program is just trying to literally get grass on the field. so those disparities like that hurts my heart. join me in the women's sports foundation, which is why mendoza devotes much of her time and energy towards causes to empower girls and women in

sports. this is just for these young girls to be able to, like, look across the way and say, i matter to you that you see me as much as you see your sons that you see your daughter's. let's make this as equal as possible so that we're seeing everyone on equal level, mendoza says. you can't ignore the progress that's been made as we look toward the ceilings that still need to be shattered. fist pump 50 years of title nine. you look back. i mean, sitting in the hall of honor, induction and seeing these other women and honestly, the fact that they were wearing like, you know, ppe close to try to compete in. i mean, you look at how far we've come. yes and we need to take those moments to say. thank you and to celebrate. but oh my goodness. we then understand that we have a long way to go jason appelbaum ktvu fox two news report, jason. thank you, tom is 5 58 1 federal agency says if you travel during the spring and summer, you should also take a very important lifesaving device with you. here it is. it's a carbon monoxide alarm, and the consumer

alright, salles here friday late or is it picking up? what's the deal looks pretty good. the silicon valley commute should be the lightest today, steve as a lot of the tech campuses that don't have it seems like they all take the day off on friday. for the most part, it looks very nice there if you're driving, let's say from oakland to san francisco right now, it doesn't look all that slow. and driving across to the san mateo bridge that looks good public transit systems remain on time at 601. let's get right back to the headlines are following a developing story in the east bay pg and e. says more than 5000 customers have no power after a high speed pursuit in oakland. look at your tv screen. the chp was chasing a dodge challenger, pbond, interstate 80 and the hayward area about three o'clock this morning. the police ended the pursuit as a speeds reportedly hit 100 and 20 miles an hour that dodge challenger ended up smashing into a power pole on the high street off ramp

6:06 am
for having me. first of all, what are your initial thoughts about the indictment? were you surprised? i wasn't. i think we've all been expecting this for a few weeks. now the political ramifications as you mentioned, i think are to me the most interesting ones as a political scientist. i think you know trump might win the primary . despite these things. i don't think any presidential candidate would raise their hand and choose to be indicted. trump included, but he's simply too far ahead now. for this to have an extraordinary negative impact on his candidacy. what i'm really looking at is how it impacts 2024. i think this is good news for democrats. you know, trump's the only candidate they know for sure they can beat . he may very likely be the nominee and republicans didn't have to do this. they could have put more pressure on the party, both from donors. grassroots activists to you know, try to coalesce around a couple trump
6:07 am
alternatives, but we have this huge field again of people who are struggling to distinguish themselves and this behavior, frankly, whether trump is ultimately convicted or not. is not relatable to most average voters to most americans in general election setting, right , let's talk about that a little bit. the other cases against him as well in new york and georgia, possibly the january 6th insurrection or any of those potentially more damaging or any of those could prevent him from running for re election or been convicted and actually serving time. no i mean eugene debs ran for office for president. in fact, from jail in 1920 we've seen we've seen candidates do this before he can absolutely run even though he's unlikely to see jail time. i think the georgia election interference case, according to most legal analysts, is a little bit
6:08 am
clearer cut. so is january 6th, but, uh, these states and these prosecutors are not supposed to coordinate. i'm glad they're not . that's not how the justice system works. and so alvin brags case, uh, was on a quicker timeline and even though people seem to agree on both sides of the aisle, this is a little bit thinner. ah this is the first one to come out. and so this is the one trump's dealing with head on now, as we're here, hearing from many politicians, pelosi to santa's santa's and nancy pelosi at the center of the debate should a president or former president be treated the same or differently than any other american accused of a crime? what are your thoughts on that? well they should absolutely be considered the same as any other american. what republicans are claiming, though, is that he's being there being a specially tough on trump because he's a former president because he's running and democrats are saying that, uh,
6:09 am
you know, no one is above the law, and that includes trump and so there's plenty of strategic messaging to go around on both sides of the aisle. i think what rhonda sanders is doing is particularly interesting. you know, trump, by all accounts will turn himself in next week, so just scientist doesn't have to deal with an extradition issue, but by coming out against it, and it's not something he would have to touch in the first place. that's a pretty savvy political move, and i think all of the other republican candidates or potential ones are trying to figure out how do i get my message out there with all of the oxygen being sucked up by trump, and it's frankly the same issue they've been dealing with since 2016. he's just the biggest story and he's the only campaign issue right now. i think political science majors will be studying this for years to come. i would imagine lauren right from princeton
