there you go, jason. thank you. next at 11. i don't like the cold. so um, it's a challenge for me to always stay warm. frigid temperatures sweeping across the bay area as communities brace for a cold and wet week ahead. the 11 o'clock news on ktvu. fox two starts now. down trees and power outages have plagued the bay area, and now communities are preparing for bitter temperatures and even some snow in some places. hello again, everyone. i'm julie julie haener mike mibach chief meteorologist , bill martin kicks off our coverage tonight. bill was cold today, freezing in some spots tonight and snow falling in parts of the bay area above 1000 ft. around 800 to 1000 ft. we've got snow falling or snow flurries happening up on 17 right now highway 17 over to santa cruz. kind of in this area right here. i've seen some video from there, so that looks pretty good. pretty heavy snow. it's a warm snow. the flakes are big. you got snow flurries and pink upper here up by morgan hill up around mount hambleton and so on

. it's widely scattered stuff. see, all this showers are all over the map, so it will be widely scattered snow flurries above 1000 or above 800. ft tomorrow night is going to be a different deal. tomorrow night. we're going to get into it. we're going to see more moisture involved in this system in the system tomorrow night into friday morning, and that's what we could see accumulations in the santa cruz mountains. a few inches of snow and in and around marin county as well upon skyline probably melt town, maybe a couple inches there as well. a freeze warning tonight you saw that coming frost advisory around the bay that includes san francisco. that's how cold it's going to be, and then the rare but have seen it before the winter storm warning essentially for the mountains of the bay area, so and we're that, you know, winter storm warning. that's a pretty big deal. right? so they're expecting 3 to 4 inches of snow in some of these areas again, these are going to be the highest locations places like mount town, saying halina um you know, this would be mount tam here. santa cruz mountains. mount aluminum. when you're up there a bit. mount hamilton's but still right winter storm warning, so we'll watch out. that's mainly for tomorrow night into friday. that is the main

event right now. it's just kind of getting an appetizer. but by tomorrow night we'll have some pretty good snow video for you. i'm sure all right. sounds good bill. thank you. tens of thousands of a area households still in the dark tonight. latest numbers from pg and e showed 26,000 customers are without power 22,000 are on the peninsula, another 3500 in the south bay as ktvu lamonica peter's report. some people have not had power on for more than 24 hours. liang wang says he's a student who lives in this building operated by stanford university in menlo avenue. i hope the power can on the fixed as well as possible, he says. he's been without power for over 24 hours, but he stayed in his apartment because he didn't have any place else to go. wang showed us what he's doing to preserve his food. today, i found food from the way so they sent me the ice, so i put the ice in the refrigerator. yeah pg and e says there were dozens of fallen trees and more than 670

transformers damaged during tuesday's windstorm, the company says they have about 2800 crew members working to restore power throughout the region. what's really challenging for cruz right now is that we're seeing a lot of outages that are only affecting maybe one or a few customers. and at these locations. it's not just one tree down. that broke, for example, powerful, but it's multiple polls that are down multiple trees, tostadas says removing trees from power lines takes time and has to be done carefully. she says they hope to get power back to every customer as soon as possible. but with another winter storm, bringing heavy rain and snow another round of outages should be expected is preparing for low elevation snow that's expected to arrive tomorrow and friday. so snow loading on tree species not accustomed to snowfall could result in more trees falling and branches, breaking an impacting power lines, and this could disrupt electric service. shortly after speaking with us,

wang reached out to say that his power had been turned back on. pg and e says people should continue to take precautions like using flashlights instead of candles. and unless you have a fireplace, you shouldn't start a fire of any kind inside of your house. it can be really dangerous. lamonica peters, ktvu fox two news. in south san francisco 150 ft. tall tree came down on a home today taken out of power pole and the line that serves 134 homes. it was just one of dozens of trees to come down in the area, taking out more than 600 transformers. 113 power poles pg and e says its workers are seeing more impacts from the drought with dead and diseased trees in the north bay . people are staying inside, and several warming centers have also opened up. ktvu is brooks jarocz continues our coverage tonight in santa rosa. is that we're temperatures keep dropping. it's just down. healing freezing was first seen in santa rosa as hail and sleet

you can't bring a smaller plant or tree inside, simply cover it with a cloth just over the top of the canopy. the leaves are really what you're protecting. that's what can take the damage from the frost above and it's good to have moist soil below and that way the soil can retain the heat. and not freeze as easily as dried soil and dry roots. and the root of this winter storm and cold is just beginning to bite. we have seen already some accidents. we've seen trees into homes. we've seen power outages, the wise stay home if you can and check on your neighbors and community members cry, it's going to be icicle. city officials say they're also concerned that temperatures will not rebound for several days, causing a constant cold. then they say, on top of it, if you have winds and freezing rain, there could be power outages, which is why they're stressing these warming centers are also charging stations to make sure everyone can keep connected during this

winter storm in santa rosa, brooks jarocz ktvu, fox two news . marine county is activating its severe weather emergency shelter for the homeless. it's located at the marin health and wellness campus on koerner boulevard in san rafael, and will be open for three nights from this evening through saturday morning. the emergency shelter is activated when temperatures are forecast dip below 38 degrees from minimum of three days, and the freezing temperature is bringing a lot of snow to the southern sierra and up in tahoe. travelers should plan for travel disruptions, though over those passes on 50 and 80 drivers in need of supplies to help get them through the rough road conditions, at least on 80 can always find them at the king val shell station in soda springs. tire chains. we we've constantly got stocked up the whole entire closet. we've got stocked florida roof. officials at heavenly ski resort said the storms will bring high winds that could affect ski operations

. there could be a delayed opening, reduced skiing terrain and plenty of wind holds in southern california snow covering the san bernardino mountains tonight, the national weather service issued a rare blizzard warning for areas of ventura and los angeles counties for friday and saturday. snowfall is expected to range from 1 to 3, ft. above 6000 ft and 3 to 4 ft on the higher peaks. snow already started fiv, and the chp says the grapevine could be shut down if it becomes too dangerous to drive on and a quick reminder. now you can get the latest conditions and the extended forecast in the ktvu weather app. it also has live interactive radar and that app is free to download and 11. there's been an arrest in a sexual assault in oakland that happened last week. ktvu has learned that parolee and convicted burglar 35 year old derek white is in custody in connection in this case. investigators say the suspect entered building on grand avenue right near lake merritt on february 13th and forced a woman

into the restroom where he sexually assaulted her. he was arrested by oakland police along with u. s. marshals the city of les how has hired an outside investigator to look into accusations of improper disposal of police records by city staff alejo police department has been under scrutiny over the last several years. following a number of police shootings. city officials did not release details about this investigation , saying only that should policy training or criminal issues be discovered. actions will be addressed to east bay politicians have announced that they will run for the state senate seat currently held by nancy skinner. berkeley mayor jesse arigon says he's in the running for the district seven seat. the mayor told us he wants to address issues including housing. homelessness education , public safety as well as climate change, and oakland city council member dan cobb also confirmed to ktvu that he will run for that senate seat in a district that stretches from alameda to crockett. he said that he wants to continue

skinner's focus on the environment. still a camp parents in southern california outraged after they say their children were given racist cards at their elementary school plus a new business in downtown oakland hasn't even opened its doors yet, but has been targeted by burglars here from the owner.

creek. the boy was sitting in the family room. when that tree came down, firefighters had to pull out their saws and cut the tree in order to pull the boy out. officials say the toddler is at santa clara valley medical center, where he is suffering from serious injuries to his lower body at 11 tonight, sacred heart community service in san jose is asking for the community's help in finding their large truck. the big box truck was stolen from their first street parking lot last night. sacred heart is a nonprofit organization that helps low income people in need. police report has been filed. if you see the big box truck you're asked to call police business in downtown oakland was set to open its doors this weekend, but the owner tells us he's been forced now to postpone the grand opening. he says. thieves broke in and stole 75% of his inventory. ktvu is amber lee has his story. surveillance videos showed two thieves break through a gate early monday morning around 1 45 1 of them uses a hammer to smash the glass door

to a commercial building with multiple tenants. the pair crawled through the bottom of the door and head straight to the back door of the suit lounge , a new men's clothing store in downtown oakland that has yet to open its doors to the public. i'm numb. i, uh. you know, i've a lot of sweat equity equity. a lot of money invested. kevin greene says he used his savings to open the store, but thieves stole most of his inventory. i had suits lined up here. signs of forced entry into green store a painful reminder of the loss the thief spent about 10 minutes , removing armloads of items from the store making multiple trips. green estimates they stole $45,000 worth of merchandise violated, green says he refuses to allow the thieves to rob him of his lifelong dream of owning a business that will make a difference in oakland city hall. i shouldn't. i shouldn't be afraid to open up a

business two blocks from city hall. he had planned to hold the grand opening this weekend, which is now being postponed. i can't tell you how many people try to talk me out of not opening up in oakland, but it's something that i felt in my spirit to do. green says the business is part of his plan to start a foundation that will help mentor young men and also dress them for success is an art. and a lot of men really don't know. they come in for guidance. green tells me he hadn't gotten around to buying insurance so he'll have to find a way to cover the loss, not a quitter. i'm gonna succeed. i'm going to stay open. and i'll have top security. green now plans to hold his grand opening on march 1st. he tells me he wants to organize a community event, bringing business owners and neighbors together to find solutions to make downtown oakland safer. in oakland. amberleigh ktvu, fox two news.

parents at a southern california elementary school are outraged after they say their children received racist cards from other students. parents say the cards were given to several black students by a group of sixth graders, calling them racist names. the cards also told the students that group would be nice to them for black history month has happened at pepper tree elementary and upland. a city in san bernardino county. they had one for my daughter. specifically that had um, a slave on it. you're my favorite slave hanging from a tree. school district officials say the students who wrote the cards will be disciplined, adding that they have zero tolerance for this behavior after the break a ruling over vaccine mandates for california students what school districts across the state needs to know also heading to disneyland anytime soon. the new warning over a dangerous social media trend. in reports of snow

to require children to be vaccinated to attend school lies with the state. it stems from a lawsuit filed over a vaccine mandate in the san diego unified school district. the appeals court said that under state law , only public health officials, not a district can set vaccine mandates. so far, the state has not added the covid vaccine to the list of other immunizations that children are required to have before attending school. there is a new proposal to have at least one gender neutral

restroom in california school state senator josh newman of fullerton has introduced legislation that would require a through 12 schools in the state to provide students with access to all gender restrooms during school hours. california schools are currently required to give students access to restrooms consistent with their gender but are not explicitly required to have gender neutral restrooms. the bill does not require schools to get rid of the traditional gender segregated bathrooms, warning from disneyland tonight, the theme park has installed new warnings on its guardians of the galaxy ride is a dangerous new tiktok trend. encourages writers to bypass safety protocols. videos are encouraging writers to loosen or improperly secured their seatbelts to increase air time during the free fall portion of the ride. disneyland says if you don't follow the rules, you will be thrown out. the guardians ride opened in 2017 at california adventure, replacing the twilight zone tower of terror in a place you might not expect snow. in sin

storm warning in a rare winter storm warning it is for the bay area hills. i've seen it, but not very often. these are high and numbers. i'm not. i'm not saying you're gonna get six inches of snow and petaluma. you're gonna get snow flurries and petaluma and maybe you get a dusting, maybe an inch i it's hard. you never know what these things but there's going to be more moisture available. tomorrow night. about this time , so stay tuned coming tomorrow night, and i'm sure we'll be showing you some some shots of snow throughout some parts of the bear and you can get sea level snow, too. if you get into a place like morocco, where you're down in a little, you know, tucked away valley cold air settles in there, and it could easily get a little bit snow that sticks that. i think the real stories canada being the grapevine and mammoth mountain parts outside of fresno , where this is really going to be the most there's going to be the most moisture available. so a blizzard warning, not a winter storm warning like we see above that they're talking about blizzard warning all the way down to pasadena to the san bernardino's so very, very unusual weather pattern that
