victims and the daughter of a couple that was murdered by the golden state killer and rapist. the hayward bart station was closed for hours after someone fired a shot at a police sergeant inside of the station. it was not the only incident last night that disrupted bart service. this is ktvu mornings on 2. >> good morning. thank you for joining us on thursday morning, april 26th. i'm pam cook. >> good morning. i'm dave clark. steve is off again today. >> yes. >> we're lucky enough to have mark tamayo. >> i'm the same guy talking about the same old forecast. >> that's all right. >> i changed the blue tie to the red tie today. >> otherwise it's the same. >> yes. >> we have scattered low fog trying to regroup towards portions of the bay. we will continue to cool things off. so there is our live camera looking out towards the bay bridge. it will be breezy once again. tomorrow, possibly drizzle by

this time. and the weekend there is the chance of a few sprinkles first thing saturday morning. highs only in the 60s coming up for the weekend. take a look at the satellite. the satellite has not changed much as well. you can pick out the circulation. it has stalled out in the pacific. that will eventually approach our coastline over the next 48 hours. there is the current cloud pattern. clouds from san francisco to half moon bay to san jose as well. current numbers showing you santa rosa in the upper 40s. san jose in the mid-50s. kind of just like yesterday. we're starting out with a big blanket of low clouds. partly sunny this afternoon. and temperatures ranging from the upper 50s to 60s instead of the mid-70s. we will talk more about the cooler weekend forecast for the weekend. let's check in with sal. he has an update on the roadways. good morning, sal. >> good morning to you, mark. we have a look at the tracy super commute for you. you can see westbound 580

traffic is a little slow already as you drive on 205. 580 at 205, a little bit of congestion. that's about it. from livermore to pleasanton, it looks good, out to dublin. no major issues driving past the coliseum here. the traffic is moving along nicely. at the bay bridge, it is light so far. it is 4:02. let's go back to the desk. >> thank you, sal. preparations underway for the first court appearance of the man suspected to be the golden state killer. >> ness a sacramento county jail right now. he will appear in court tomorrow. two murder charms have been filed against him for the deaths of man and a woman in rancho cordova back in 1978. but he could be responsible for as many as 12 murders and 51 rapes in ten california counties between 1974 and 1986, when many people thought the

golden state killer had died. now, here is a map showing where the crimes happened that deangelo is suspected of committing. the early crimes are in the sacramento area, with at least a dozen more in the east bay. mostly contra costa county. the last cases were in southern california, including ventura, orange, and santa barbara counties. ktvu's deborah says with so many crimes over so many counties, the prosecution will be complex. >> reporter: in june of 1976, i was 12. sacramento's d.a. grew up here and remembers fearing the east bay area rapist. >> the answer was and always was going to be in the dna. >> reporter: 72-year-old joseph deangelo was never investigated over the years. even as attacks moved south into ventura and orange counties in the '80s and more

often became murders. that suspect known as the original night stalker. as time passed with the same dn aa at so many scenes, investigators realized it was one man dubbed the golden state killer. >> we found the needle in the haystack. and it was right here in sacramento. >> reporter: deangelo was in this citrus heights home where he has lived for many years, married with adult children, a family now learning what he is linked to. >> we havent viewed them and as they are as cooperative and certainly it is quite a shock to them as you might expect. >> reporter: during his alleged crimes, deangelo was a police officer in auburn and visalia. in 1979, fired for shoplifting a hammer and dog repellant. but he never aroused deeper suspicions. >> this has occurred in the last six days. >> reporter: task force newly focused on the case won't say what pointed them to deangelo but they watched him for about a week.

>> during that time we were able to watch him. we got a feel for some of his activities. >> reporter: got a sense of his routine and how he might respond if confronted. >> we developed a plan to wait for him to come out of his residence. >> reporter: tuesday night, he came out. >> we had a team in place that was able to take him into custody. he was very surprised by that. >> reporter: by then, they had run two dna samples, taken from items that deangelo discarded. >> we came together to bring solace to the victims and to bring resolution and relief. and we know that the pain and anguish has never subsided through the years and through the decades. >> reporter: ktvu fox 2 news. >> one of the youngest of the rape victims was only 12 years old in 1977 when she was attacked. margaret wardlow says the man broke into her bedroom in the middle of the night and assaulted her. after that terrifying attack, she tried to move on with her

life. >> i really gave up on watching the case or following the case after a number of attacks, after my attack. i was the 27th victim. and it wasn't until about a year and a half ago that i got involved with some of the family members of the murder victims that i realized this man has got to be caught and brought to justice. >> she now is happy for the families of the murder victims and for everyone whose lives were affected by the golden state killer, including the law enforcement officers who finally made the arrest. well, the arrest is now sparking many emotions for family that's have been dealing with the aftermath of the crimes for more than 40 years. a santa cruz woman says investigators called to tell her deangelo had been arrested and she was immediately overwhelmed by feelings of gratitude, mixed with sadness. jennifer carol's father and stepmother were killed in their home, beaten to death with a fireplace log. carol was 18 years old at the time and said her 12-year-old

brother found the bodies. jennifer coped with the tragedy by believing the killer of her parents was also dead. >> i'm so mad he has been alive this whole time. he has not been living in terror. if you ask me what i want to have happen, i want him to confess because i don't want to waste one more municipal dime on his trash. >> she says she does not want deangelo to be executed. she wants him to, quote, rot in jail. and she griefs for all of the people who died at his hands and died not knowing what happened to them or their loved ones since the first crime. as we get more reaction from the arrest, alameda county district attorney nancy will join us on mornings on 2. then at 8:00, contra costa county d.a. diana beckton will be here as well. the time is 4:07. the arrest has been made of a

man accused of firing shots at a hayward police officer at the bart station. the station was shut down around 7:30 after the shots were fired. the officer was not shot and no one else was hurt. the officer had just walked into the bart station to alert bart staff about a shooting nearby when the suspect walked in and fired a shot. the suspect was arrested a short time after. then a couple of hours in a separate incident, bart trains were stopped at west oakland because of a police search. both stations are back to normal this morning. late they are morning, the bart board of directors will meet, talking about giving discounts to low income riders. the board will get an update on the regional means base fares. it would involve bart, ac transit, cal train, golden game and sam trans. they could offer discounts for passengers based on their

household incomes compared to federal poverty levels. muni already has discount programs. new this morning, scott pruitt is scheduled to testify on capitol hill. he is expected to face questions about spending and ethics scandals in back to back house sub committee hearings. he is accused of misusing money on travel expenses and renting a condo from the wife of a lobbyist for just $50 a month. many have called for him to step down but president trump says that pruitt still has his support. the first of three meetings hosted by the city of concord will be held tonight about future plans for the future naval station. the city will present the land use plan and get the latest updates on the project and get input. the plan is for the 5,000 acre base. more than 65% of the project

will become parks, playing fields and open space. the rest of it will be developed over the next 20 years. tonight's meeting will be at 6:30 at the church of jesus christ of ladder day saints. the company that will clean up the former hunters point naval shipyard in san francisco is defending itself against accusation that's it falsified soil samples. tetra tech says it stands by its work of cleaning up radioactive material at the site. last year the navy said it was reexamining the information produced by tetra tech after a review found some problems with half of the soil samples that may have been manipulated. the old shipyard is in the process of being developed into a site for more than 12,000 homes as well as commercial and office space. president trump's travel ban is now in the hands of the supreme court. it limits travel from seven

countries. immigrant groups have been complaining for months that the ban unfairly targets them. the justices signaled support for the policy but had tough questions for both sides. >> this is about a perpetual problem. >> you want the president to say in six months we're going to have a safe world. >> it goes back 100 years. >> so far it looks like the mostly conservative supreme court is ready to uphold the travel ban, despite lower courts blocking previous versions. a decision on the travel ban is expected in late june. a new poll shows it is becoming a three-person race for governor. lieutenant governor newson received 21% in the survey. followed by antonio vilaraigosa at 18%. and john cox with 15%. the rest of the candidates were in single digits.

>> welcome back to mornings on 2. our time is now 4:15. the deangelo case has created waves of emotions for families that are still waiting for justice. >> janet talk today two bay area families who say it gives them hope as they wait for answers for what happened to their loved ones who were victims many years ago. >> reporter: the suspect arrest in cold case was more than a headline for some family. thinking of the victims. >> we have been through that and we know how painful it is. >> reporter: pain is something that the couple has been living with since 1994, when john found his teenage daughter jenny stab today death inside of their castro valley home.

after two decades, her killer still has not been found. >> just looking at this 40-year- old case that can be solved, it gives us hope. >> reporter: but hope can be hard for the families who often face daily heart break with no answers. difficult too for the dents who devote years, even entire careers trying to solve cases. >> it is emotionally draining because most people who do these kind of cases do them not to get the stat. >> reporter: former berkeley police lieutenant spent years training homicide detectives. >> it is difficult for the family and for you. because in my experience in working cold cases is you live it for years. and that really is where you put the vast majority of your efforts. and you just pray during the course of the investigation that you can bring -- bring them satisfaction. >> never give up hope. >> reporter: some families such

as mike and mad ein dublin says that the arrest reminds them that dna analysis may help find criminals. >> what they can do with it now to identify unidentified bodies, perpetrators, killers, rapists is amazing into and each cold case arrest, a reminder to families to never give up hope. >> hoping that some day that the justice will be there for jenny. we keep on praying. >> well, san francisco police and homeless outreach crews work today clear tent camps in the mission district on

wednesday. >> mayor mark farrell said the city would be clearing out 120 tents in and around the mission. the people in the camps and along the sidewalks were offered services that include temporary housing and drug counseling. the mayor also announced a proposal to spend nearly $13 million over two years to clean up the streets. now, the money would pay for five newportible public restrooms and hire an additional 44 neighborhood cleaners. it also includes $3.4 million for new equipment such as street cleaning machines. the mayor says he hears complaints about with dirty streets every day. >> together this is an ambitious effort. and i know i only have a few months left as the great mayor of the great city of san francisco. but i plan on sprinting to the finish. >> the mayor also wants a new street cleaning program specifically for the south of market area and to create a special rapid response team to clean up any dirty needles.

all right. the time is 4:18. we will get you out the door now. sal is right there watching our commute early. how does it look? >> it looks pretty good early. >> good. >> we don't have a lot going on. and that would be a very nice commute for the gilroy area. let's look at the drive from gilroy to san jose. the traffic here looks pretty good. no major slow-downs along the way. sometimes we do but today we have a nice-looking commute. we had an earlier crash southbound 101 in sunnyvale near fair oaks. that has been cleared up. no slow traffic there anymore. this is a live affect the 280 in san jose getting up to highway 17. of course at the bay bridge, mostly all of the lanes here are looking very good with no delays. 4:19. let's bring in mark tamayo. >> hi, sal. good thursday morning to you. no big changes in the overall weather pattern. just a deck of low clouds and fog out there. what could change is tomorrow. maybe some drizzle showing up,

especially coast side. by saturday, maybe sprinkles showing up first thing saturday morning as the weak system moves in from the pacific. highs today will be cooler. mainly in the upper 50s to lower 70s. so this is the foothill ares -- i that will keep us on the toes in the weather department. you can see this area of low pressure out here in the pacific. that will eventually approach the coastline over the next couple of days. with that, more cloud cover and possibly some drizzle chances first thing tomorrow morning. and then a few sprinkles first thing saturday morning. here you can see on the satellite low clouds out towards san francisco, san jose, livermore, and santa rosa reporting mostly cloudy skies. current numbers stepping outside of the door right now, mid-40s. so these numbers actually about the same as yesterday at this time. in fact, a little warmer. a touch warmer especially towards the napa area. here is the deal outside right now. look at that. you can see the low clouds. but you can't completely block the moon. perfect timing here with the camera showing you the low

clouds trying to blanket the bay. so we have a few breaks in the cloud cover. i suspect we will have more clouds for the next few hours up until about 9:00, 10:00 this morning. that's all in your forecast for today. 8:00, 53 degrees. low clouds out there. by 12:00, still call it mostly cloudy in san francisco near the bay. and 4:00 partly sunny skies. a bit of a breeze and temperatures will be in the upper 50s. so talking about those drizzle chances here. maybe a few sprinkles. this is later on today. as we take this into the forecast hours for tomorrow morning, you can see a little bit of green showing up off shore. maybe some drizzle or a few sprinkles. and then the clouds try to mix out a little bit by the afternoon hours on friday. then saturday, there is the chance as well, first thing saturday morning. not a big deal but it won't be sunny and warm here. temperatures in fact cooling down towards the weekend. forecast highs in afternoon, 57

>> welcome back to mornings on 2. happening today, the port of oakland commission will meet about the future of the oakland a's. commissioners schedule today vote on whether to enter into exclusive negotiations with the team in regards to building a ballpark at the howard terminal site. the one-year negotiating agreement would give the a's time to examine the economic prospects of any environmental issues concerning that area. the a's are entering a similar agreement with the city of oakland regarding the coliseum property. the time is now 4:25. the oakland a's get a day off before they start a weekend series with the houston astros,

the defending champs. yesterday the a's lost to the texas rangers 4-2 despite a good start by kendall grademan who allowed three runs on six hits. the a's are in fourth place in the als but only trail the astros by three and a half years. tomorrow the giants will host the dodgers after getting blown out by the nationals yesterday 15-2. yikes. jeff gave up six runs on eight hits in less than four innings. the nationals ended a four-game losing streak. tomorrow's game will begin at 7:15. and the san jose sharks head to las vegas. they will play the golden knights in the second round of the nhl playoffs. it has been over a week since both teams swept their first round series. san jose will have its work cut out for them. they didn't beat the knights in any of the regular season games. the fans here in the bay area hope the team's hot streak for
