>> this breaking news update. we will have the latest on the bart strike, first though breaking news in contra costa county. vegetation fire that is burning right now near hess road. this just east of the concord pavilion. at this point we have learned that the road is closed near the intersection presumably for fire crews to access this fire. contra costa county fire crews said this is a second alarm fire. there are at least four so six homes and ranches in this area

threatened by flames. we don't know how many acre versus burned or how the fire started. of course we will stay on this story and bring you more as we get it in the newsroom. now to the bart strike. there's no movement today on talks between the union and bart management. some 400,000 commuters had to find other ways to get around. turning to ferries, car pool, buses or their own cars. it took extra time to get into the city, but all things considered the morning commute was relatively smooth. likely did you due to the fact it is a holiday week. let's give you a live look now at interstate 80. you can see traffic is moving maybe a little slower than usual, but still this is essentially expected to be the calm before the storm of what's going to be this evening's commute. in the hour or two we expect a lot of people to leave work earlier than usual trying to get the crunch expect today happen today through 5:00, 6:00 maybe even 7:00 hours.

keep in mind when you jump into a car today the hov lanes are being enforced all day long until 7:00 tonight. be sure to stay with ktvu for the latest on the bart strike and this fire of course. this is breaking news in contra costa county. you can see there's an area charred by flames. look at the center left stove screen, that's where the smoke is rising up into the air at this point. some major questions still to be answered, how did this fire start and at this point we know about four to six homes are threatened. we see here this one roadway and i wish i could tell you if that's kirker pass road. it has been shut down so crews can get the to the fire area. cal fire is also attacking from the air sending helicopters. but here we have a good look at the fireline. watch as the flames continue to the top left of the screen here. and if you look at that vegetation that's burning it is awful dry, very, very yellow, easy to see that. of course it is a very dry, very hot day there in the concord area. as i said we are still
