including a homicide at 19th and webster just outside this dental office. less than 24 hours ago, police were investigating the scene at lake merritt dental, where a 45- year-old man from virginia had been shot and killed after being robbed. police sources tell us the thieves took about 17 -- $17. his widow spoke with us by phone today. >> i'm very angry. angry won't help. it won't bring my husband back. >> reporter: police, too, appear to be feeling frustrated by the string of violence, including a sniper firing a rifle at them late last night, a shooting in broad daylight on bancroft avenue this morning that left one man in critical condition. >> this is very unusual for the city of oakland to see these types of incidents take place in such a short period of time. >> reporter: oakland police spokesperson -- [ inaudible ]

>> i can't say whether those units would be out there -- if they were out there would have deterred this. i just know some of the resources that we had we don't have anymore. >> reporter: officer thomason said they are stepping up patrols in the recent hot spots and working in extra resources to help solve these crimes. priya davis-clemens, ktvu channel 2 news. we now know more about the man involved in a wild shootout with the chp that shut down the interstate for hours. byron williams of groveland in the sierra foothills has an extensive criminal history that includes convictions for felony theft in washington state and bank robberies, dui and battery

in california. when officers pull the williams over sunday morning for speeding and driving erratically, they say he had a cache of weapons and was wearing body armor. >> obviously he was armed with lots of weapons. he had a bulletproof vest and he was going somewhere. that's what we're going to investigate is what was he gonna do. >> williams may have been motivated by his inner over the political climate in the country. he's hospitalized with multiple gunshot wounds. demonstrators, both in support of and against former b.a.r.t. police officer, johannes mehserle, took to the streets today. rob roth is live in walnut creek tonight with our report. rob in. >> reporter: frank, the protest and counterprotests have ended. the sidewalks were packed with demonstrators for much of the tv 1 afternoon in a day that was peaceful.

to go home. >> reporter: the financial tab is still being calculated. ball knit creek officials say a lot of officers receive a lot of overtime. reporting live in walnut creek, rob roth, ktvu channel 2 news. problem nightclubs may be dealt with in a swift manner. today legislation was approved that would give san francisco's entertainment commission the power to shut down any nightclub where violent activity routinely breaks out. david stevenson is in san francisco now with a live report. david? >> reporter: the dance cafe behind me voluntarily shut down a week ago after a fatal shooting in the parking lot there outside. it's set to reopen as soon as tomorrow even as city leaders have tentatively approved making it easier to close troubled nightclubs permanently. >> the string of violence includes

a shooting outside of jelly's, the june shooting of a police officer outside this mission district club and a fatal shooting outside swade nightclub. >> you will get 2,000, 3,000 people more of people released into the street of 2:00 a.m., filled with alcohol and looking to keep the good time going. >> reporter: as residents called for action, the committee took up whether to give the city's entertainment commission the power to permanently revoke the permits of troublesome clubs. >> we're not just being react in. we're trying to be proactive. >> reporter: security called for plans, i.d. card readers a the rear and front of the club. law enforcement officers say monitoring clubs comes at a huge cost. >> roughly, you spend $0,000 by policing clubs so you can add those numbers to what it costs us annually. there's no cost recovery. >> reporter: critics of the entertainment commission says

more californians now support the idea of same-sex marriage. the survey found that california voters favor allowing gay couples to marry by a margin of 51% to 42%. 7% had no opinion. here in the bay area, 63% of voters said they favor same-sex marriage. that compares to 51% in los angeles county. 45% in san diego and orange county and just 42% in the central valley. that same poll also shows how californians' opinion on legalizing gay marriage has shifted in the past 33 year. in 977, only 28% of californians approved extending marriage laws to same-sex dulls. 20 years later, in 997, the approval rate went up 0% to 38%. almost ten years later in 2006, 44% approved. the lines crossed in 2008 when, for the first time, the field poll found more californian

voter approved rather than disapproved of allowing same- sex marriage. but despite that majority in 2008, california voters passed prop 8 which defined marriage as between a man and a woman. in 2009, approval dipped a little bit and now 5% of voters approve of allowing same-sex marriage into president obama pressed senate republicans to stop blocking a bill to extend jobless benefits for millions of americans. during a rose garden address, the president urged the nate to pass an unemployment insurance extension when it takes up the issue again tomorrow and it is believed that the democrats have the vote necessary. republicans say they would only approval the -- approve the benefit plan if it would not add to the deficit. barbara boxer was in foster city the a the headquarters of solar city, the company designs, finances and installs solar systems for homeowners and businesses. these are good-paying jobs

state officials plan to create a detailed map of the california coast to help prevent mistakes bike the -- laker the crumbling cliff in pacifica. emotion experts said the ocean is claiming more and more of our coast. and to save it, we need better
