health this afternoon. we're taking a look at the vital role that nurses play in caring for our community because it is. >> national nurses week. so joining us now is a registered nurse. kristen vending you work at san francisco general hospital. thank you for joining us. >> thank you for having me today. it's great to be here. so what drove you to become a nurse? so the need for assistance labor and delivery. i had my daughter and was instantly hooked on helping have a safe birth. and so i am in labor and delivery. it's a covered san francisco general hospital today. so this a career change for you? it was.
3:29 pm
it was. but it was the right thing to do. once you know, become a labor and delivery nurse is a huge part of my life. i'm very proud of the work that we do. my colleagues when i help women have help re-establish what normal birth can be. we also help incredibly high risk patients as well. patients have substance use issues, patients that have mental illness issues, patients to only seek medical care during their pregnancies. so we are the first point of health care access for many of our patients and for some of our patients, we actually have a subset of patients who have a higher morbidity and mortality rates. then women in south sudan and south sudan is the most dangerous place in the world to give birth at. so we are there helping our patients. we're incredibly hire a. they and get connected
3:30 pm
to the resources that they need. so that their lives and the lives of their children can be greatly improved. we want to make a really big impact on our patients lives and we love. but we do. we have the best patients in the world. yeah. what do you love about being a nurse? making impact helping him how? >> patients become empowered knowing what their bodies can do and knowing what they can access within their community is the resources that they need get housing event have long term connections with doctors and their children's pediatrician. you know, medical care something that even you you end up doing for your children, right? so you want to empower these parents to be the best parents that they can be. but you have to give them lots of tools and also a lot of inspiration. and it's it's a it's a wonderful
3:31 pm
thing to do. so what would you say that anyone who >> is aspiring to be a nurse or in nursing school? now they're thinking about it or maybe they're like you were they thinking? maybe could do this one day. what would you like to say that? >> i for it. absolutely. you need to be prepared that we have been seeing a nursing shortage coming in for decades and it's here in labor and delivery along. we have missed 3,500 breaks in the last year. so that trickles down to patient care. so you have to be an advocate for your patience, but you have advocate for each other for other nurses out there. that's why i'm here today at laguna honda hospital at this rally asking the 32 staff up. we are here to stand up for each other and stick up for each other and we need the city to give us more full-time position because the patients deserve it. we did out an ugly. we are chronically
3:32 pm
short-staffed. we did reach out to the hospital for comment about that. but so far have not heard back. so. >> we'll let you know when we do. but kristen vandling a registered nurse of 10 francisco general, thank you for joining us. and for the important work that you do. thank you. thank you. happy nurses week u 2 hope you get to do something fun to celebrate. weather's nice. that's for sure. it's breezy the winds whip in here at pier 15. >> along the embarcadero and we have kron four's gayle ong in the weather center with a look at just how much hotter we're going to get to already reached like the peak of the heat for the day. i think we did. you know, 03:00pm is usually the warmest time of the day. >> san francisco is reporting 77, but i did see 81 over by dolores park today and you can see statewide. we're pretty warm. sacramento close to 90 as well as bakersfield. little cooler by the coast. a san diego and santa barbara. but we will be warming up. and here is the bay area. temperatures still 79 degrees in downtown san francisco. we see a lot of 80's on the map and we haven't seen this. while specially francisco since october, we haven't seen
3:33 pm
a tease. so as you can see, pretty warm out there. even a point raise that station at 83 degrees. the coolest spot right now is half moon bay. there's a lot of people out there beating the heat at last check. temperatures are in the 60's and this is why you have a southerly flow back here. so that cool ocean air is cooling things off by half moon bay. we still have some offshore winds here and that is what's warming us that. so that's that wind from the land we typically see in our late fall. the diablo winds. so let's jump ahead to tomorrow's forecast highs. we are seeing 90's in the forecast, though, to concord livermore, antioch, and i would say santa rosa could see 90's as well. and you can see 80's along the bay in fremont and hayward, san francisco still expected to reach 70 degrees, which is still pretty warm in the city. half moon bay still in the 60's and 80's in nevado and mill valley. so looking ahead of this heat will stick around. as you just saw for our inland communities. and
3:34 pm
