>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> now at 6 questions tonight about whether a steering malfunction on electric vehicle was responsible for a crash that killed a family of 4 in the east bay. good evening, everybody. i'm vicki liviakis. i'm ken wayne. that crash happened last month in pleasanton as kron four's. dan kerman tells us tonight there've been several complaints filed with federal regulators over steering issues with what's called the vinfast vehicle. the complaint filed with the national highway transportation safety it's a questions whether vehicle technology may have caused the car to lose control and hit a pole and a tree

before bursting into flames, killing a family of 4 and pleasanton last month. the vehicle in question vinfast a new entry into the electric vehicle market. in the complaint, the owner of the vehicle describes what appears to be this crash in says he had steering problems before loaning the card to a co-worker who died in the crash. the complaint says the steering wheel automatically maneuvered to the right direction. however, the contact was able to regain control of the steering wheel and maneuvered into the correct lane. the context stated the failure recurred where the lane assist was turned on by default and it would automatically move the steering wheel. the contact was concerned that the failure occurred while the co-worker was driving. that raises questions about the vehicles, lane assist feature the way these link keeping assist systems generally work is you have a camera that's mounted behind the wind above the

mirror. typically. >> that's looking forward. looking looking ahead at the road and it's looking for the lane lines. the lane markings. and then i'm sending that signal is recognizes the land markings will send that signal electronic control unit in the vehicle that is tied to your steering. sam abuelsamid is an auto industry analyst with guidehouse insights. he says it's not unusual for an automaker to have issues when they launch a new vehicle, especially. >> when it has new features and technology, it could be that what's with these been fast vehicles is that the cameras not properly calibrated. and so it sinks that the cars in a position where it's not, you know, if it's looking if it's live, but if the cameras not facing straight ahead of its off to one side or the other that could cause it to to try to steer in one direction or the other when it shouldn't be than it's a website includes a total of 9 complaints about the 2023 vinfast vf. 8, 3 citing steering problems. will

now investigate. but experts say not to expect any action any time soon. >> it can take a long time before they take any action. sometimes years. kron four's reached out to vinfast for comment but did not hear back the cause of the pleasanton crash remains under investigation. dan kerman kron. 4 news. uc berkeley will hold its commencement as scheduled saturday morning. one other universities have canceled theirs because of student protests. according to the university negotiations between protesters and administrators. >> are still happening. no agreement has been reached to end. what is now a 3 week tent encampment. our friends, rob nesbitt, spoke to the organizer of that encampment in joins us now live from sproul plaza rob, what's the latest there? the kink and there are still 10 set up behind me at sproul. and protesters are still calling on uc berkeley to divest from

israel today. i notice a lot of parents walking around campus 3 days before graduation. >> uc berkeley is moving ahead with plans to hold commencement saturday at california memorial stadium. thousands of undergraduates limited to 4 tickets, each for guests and similar protocols to football games. no backpacks, no banners or signs and a clear bag policy. uc berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof expect there to be protesters calling for a cease-fire in gaza for many years. >> commencement ceremonies, uc berkeley have been the site of protests for all sorts of reasons and causes. and so this is something we're familiar with. other universities have canceled their main commencement, including usc seniors like taylor country know are having similar feelings as 4 years ago when her high school graduation was canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic. it kind of brought me back to time when i was in high school when. >> my graduation was foley canceled. so in the moment, of course, a little scary and a little disappointing. and uc berkeley's sproul plaza, the

tent encampment continues to grow homes and moon is one of the organizers and would not comment on if there are protests planned during commencement. >> but says students are prepared to continue demonstrations until uc berkeley agrees today. best money from israel. that's what we're focused the uc regents its our responsibility. >> we're the people who are uc berkeley continues to be in talks to the protest leaders. but mobile office says there are no plans to meet their divestment demands were not going to violate the region's guidance. and that is there will be no divestment from israel or any agreement for an academic boycott of israel as long as that, the university stance tense and signs u.s. that will remain mahmoud saying that protesters are in this for the long haul even after commencement dozens of other students. i know personally will if we need to be out. this country will

>> uc berkeley's commencement is scheduled to start saturday morning at 10, 30 reporting live at u c berkeley. i'm rob nesbitt kron. 4 news a pet owner in east palo alto discovered her cat had been shot and she's now facing thousands of dollars in veterinary bills. >> kron four's gayle ong joins us here in the studio with the story. yeah. can that vet bill overwhelming for the pet owner? the cat is overdue for surgery to remove that bullet and fix his broken leg. >> something on the side and that this is lee broken it right here. see it shot. a glenn is showing us the whole. she found her cat baby or took him into the bet and we have x-ray scheduled they found a bullet x-ray images showing that bullet inside the cat. and is the lead. the bone right here. >> that's broken. the injury was discovered last month. glenn initially thought it was from a cat fight at the time. a police report has been filed. >> glenn says her cat was shot

somewhere near lincoln avenue and east bayshore road in east palo alto. don't know if it was intentional. i don't know if it was a stray. >> but you know, he has inside needs to be removed. glenn was told baby needs 2 surgeries, one to remove the bullet and the other to repair his leg. >> the vet bill worth over $5,000 and many people do not have an extra $5,000, you know, laying around for their pet as much as they would want. john quinn is a program director for guardian heels, a nonprofit that helps pet owners pay for veterinary care who cannot afford it. we investigated along with showing a number of different hospitals to see. >> where we could find the best care at the best price. and yes, it is expensive. a part of it is. that's 2 surgeries need to be performed when got a quote from peninsula pet hospital in menlo park. >> the doctor treating baby tells kron 4. it appears the cat got shot on its left side and likely broke its leg

running away. quinn says veterinary bills have skyrocketed after the pandemic. the nonprofit is raising money to help cover some of plans that bill, we believe that no pet owner should have to lose a beloved pet. >> simply because they can't afford to pay for veterinary care. meantime, glenn is keeping baby close by indoors. this horrible for him to, you suffering like this. just want to get procedure. operation done. >> and east palo alto police say they do not have information on a suspect at this time, but we will post details on that nonprofit helping with the cap situation. >> on our gayle, at least as she's getting some help to. yeah, just so hopefully people, you and obama lovers with see this and help us. she just can't afford that hefty bill. and it's part of the family. you've got to take care of yeah. all right. thank sir. >> take a good look at your screens. santa rosa police

released this picture of a pickup truck they say was involved in a hit and run that seriously injured a motorcyclist. they say this happened at the intersection of hopper avenue and airway drive on april. 30th around 3 o'clock in the afternoon. police believe this is a gray ford f one, 50 model between 2004 2008 with a parent stickers in the top drivers side corner of the windshield, some distinctive black rims. you can see here no front license plate and rectangular fog lamps. plus, silver sidesteps. no word tonight on the driver's description. anyone who has any information about this pickup truck is asked to call santa rosa police tonight. we're in the name of the double hit and run suspect who led police a pursuit through san francisco. police say 54 year-old jefferson, rodney was behind the wheel of a blue and white mustang yesterday when he allegedly hit 2 people struck one in the tenderloin. the other 14 year-old girl was in north beach. police chase, rodney, for about an hour and

a half before he finally stopped at green and dark and arrow near the exploratorium. they say the victims will be okay. but the teenage girl is still recovering from a fractured shoulder and ankle. rodney is facing a number of charges. happening tomorrow, president biden will fly to san francisco for a two-day visit on friday. he set to attend to campaign receptions. the president last visited san francisco in february when he went to 2 events in support of his reelection campaign. now to 4 zone forecast as we get a live look at sfo. >> and you know, you don't even need to hop on a plane to a resort because the weather resort weather is here. it's like a staycation warrants. that's why we live here. it's so nice ride. lots of sunshine out of the weather has really changed. >> since the weekend now, the whole pattern shifting more toward like a summer pattern outside. the temperatures will be some of the hottest of the season so far. how about a nice look out at the coast? half moon bay, beautiful sunshine there. we're nice and warm spots even along the

coastline today. some of those temperatures sneaking up in the low 70's. so i think we're going to see a repeat there for tomorrow. if you want to head out, the coach should be definitely a nice day to do it. but we're going to see some changes in the works in the next couple of days overnight. tonight, mostly clear skies temperatures very warm out the door right now. you've got 70's and 80's all around the bay, even in the san francisco. still some 70's there as well. so temperatures pop today quite a bit. some places much as 14, even 15 degrees warmer than just 24 hours ago. and that's going to be the case as we head toward tomorrow. probably even a couple more degrees. you can add to that as well. temperatures out the door today for highs. well above the average 83 degrees in rose t and conquer 78 degrees in lemore. 81 in both oakland and san jose. and 76 degrees in downtown san francisco. we could see some 90's in the next couple days. we'll have more on that coming up in a few minutes. but yours coming up, a neighborhood manning more be done about an abandoned apartment that recently caught fire. why neighbors say things might get even worse. plus, the new.

history of problems and they fear that things could get worse. >> more than 60 firefighters from the oakland fire department battled with this apartment building on tuesday at east 8th street. nearly college. the fire left the apartment like this full of debris and damaged. another home decided displacing a family. officials say no one was injured, but they have reported to other fires here in the past. >> the van and building. well, that's one the building. >> residents in the neighborhood tell us the building has been ongoing safety issue for them. this house has been a huge issue for the block. >> for. >> i think close to 5 years at this point, the first fires in 2019 squatters moved shortly after that. and it's been

building affordable housing for them and >> other coastal farm workers, san mateo county leaders unanimously approved the funding yesterday. it will be used to buy and install more than 40 manufactured homes. so be on 5 acres about a mile from downtown half moon bay. the idea stems from a county commission report back in 2016 which highlighted a need to improve the quality availability and affordability of housing for farmworkers in the area. the project is still in the permit process. 2 affordable housing communities being built in san francisco near visitation valley are. >> closer to rolling out the welcome mat construction started last spring and is expected to be completed early next year as kron four's tiffany justice report the mayor and community leaders are celebrating the project's progress today. >> this 50 acre site in sunny deol called the sunnydale. the lascaux master plan is moving forward. local and community leaders speaking wednesday about the progress so far, 222 affordable units have been

completed with 75% of them designated as public housing replacement units for sunny deol residents move state senator scott wiener says is much needed for the south eastern neighborhoods of the city >> south asian neighbors have been just so neglected for so many years. you know what it needs and i think it is. and we're seeing much more focus on the needs of this community. it is an essential part of san francisco, the fabric of our city. >> several groups are working on this revitalization effort, including mercy housing in the san francisco housing authority, transforming existing public housing into a mixed income neighborhood. there will be 2 apartment money and nia amani will be located on the southwestern corner of sonido avenue and street. it will have 80 new apartments for low-income families, earning 30 to 40% of the area. median income. the ground floor will be used for commercial use for groceries

in a residence hall and located across the street will be nia. it will offer 90 apartments for families earning 30 to 60% of the am. i nia is set to be completed in 2025. we have finally get into a better place. >> only the 222 units that have already been completed. but the 170 units topping off today. >> to make sure there is a real one for one replacement to support the existing community any doubt. >> the transformation of the neighborhood will also include a hub, a new community center for residents, eu slated to open in august of this year. the new space will house an early child education center in a boys and girls club house. it's a community. >> where young people would actually have a place to go. often times people get frustrated with the youth and they talk about the fact that and out in areas where typically people don't think young people should weaker.

cold drink maybe do a little fishing out there. looks nice all around the bay area now on. well, the only thing is we've seen that when the wind's going to get gusty again overnight tonight into early tomorrow morning, at least in parts of the bay area. but really for the rest, the bay boy, what a day it has been. feels like summer is already here, even though we've got a little while ago. but looking good out there right now of the golden gate bridge, beautiful sunshine, no fog to speak up. and yet we've got that offshore wind you can see right here is that when makes its way back over the great basin right now across this year that and that air sinks and start to heat up approaching the coastline brings us some beautiful weather, especially this time of year. offshore winds will continue tonight, keeping skies nice and clear overnight tonight. but likely to be little blustery in spots. high pressure still building in overhead. that ridge going to bring us another round of what looks like some windy weather least in the north and the east bay. some of those gusts. 35, maybe 45 miles per hour. but really the rest, the bay area, warm weather all around as it looks like. high pressure really in control. and these temperatures going to heat up even a little bit more now we do have wind

>> in the south bay, 2 children were taken to the hospital after high levels of carbon monoxide were found at his san jose school. fire crews that got a call this morning about several people having a tough time breathing at sunrise middle school. when they got there. they say they found elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the classroom. 2 students were taken to the hospital while another 2 were released to their parents. crews were able to find for the carbon monoxide was coming from and removed. it. well, you know, the sound starting next month, residents in emeryvilte will

no longer be able to use gas-powered leaf blowers. it is banning the device because the air and noise pollution, which may have negative health consequences. city is recommending residents switch over to electric leaf blowers. berkeley, oakland and other bay area cities have also enacted these bands. that ban starts july 1st. the cdc is warning the public now about 2 new covid-19 variants that could fuel a summer surge in cases the omicron variant subvariants rather have been nicknamed flirt due to mutations on the strain. public health officials say that these variants could be more contagious than previous strains and are better at infecting people who have been vaccinated. some of the symptoms of the flirt strain include fever, cough, and loss of taste and smell. still ahead on kron, 4 news at 6 grilled on capitol hill. berkeley unified school district's superintendent testifies in front of congress on allegations of
