>> and governor gavin newsom announcing california's tourism industry is back and better than before the pandemic. although he said the same can't be said for san francisco. >> from the area's local news station. you're watching the kron. 4 morning far. >> good morning. thanks for joining us here at 05:00am on a monday morning. i'm james fletcher in for reyna harvey and we do want to start for the whole hour with a check of the forecast because john's talking about temperatures steadily warming up. i think by midweek, right yet we're going to start to climb again today. still going to feel kind of cool. but you're exactly right, james, by the middle of the week. >> it's going back to that warmth that we had seen. what a chilly weekend, though, saturday and sunday yesterday, even though we've got the sun yesterday, a cool one and saturday just downright rainy this morning. we are starting off nice and clear. we don't have any fog along the bay shore this morning. couple spots along the north coast, but not a lot of it to be talking about and certainly dry skies across the entire region compared to where we

were last week with those stronger winds. this is a much more relaxed forecast. the jet is no longer set up shop right above us. so when should be a little bit calmer overall for much of the rest of the week. in fact, maybe even in offshore wind developing later on this week. temperatures right now really cold sonoma, napa, santa rosa. these are cold may temperatures down in the 30's right now. well, oakland sitting at 44 concord at 46 degrees. definitely what those jackets on for your morning hours later on today. it is going to be a slightly below average day much as we saw this weekend with highstin the mid to upper 60's at the warmest. but temperatures will gradually warm up the rest of this forecast and we're back to some sunshine and warmth. i'll tell you more about that. still to come, as for your roads, michael thomas is in the house. what's going on? michael? hey, good morning. everyone will taking a look the roads this morning. we are seeing some delays already near the pleasanton area. take a look. >> there's been a traffic collision at the burn all

avenue area. right now, the center divider is affected and you can see that back up almost making its way over towards the temple in 5.80, area. so an alternative route you may have to actually go through castro valley, then get back on to either to 38 or 8.80, to get in those southbound lanes. this has been like this since probably about 4.30, or so. chp is working to clear that up. but keep that in mind because there is only one lane open at the moment there. again, 6.80, southbound lanes near purnell and pleasant, 10 taking a live look at the bay bridge this morning. 8 minute commute over that this metering lights are not on san mateo bridge. 13 minute commute over that richmond, sandra fell bridge. looks like not too many people there this morning. 7 minutes to get over that. lastly, we've got that golden gate bridge coming in at 19 minutes to get into the city. james, we'll send it back to you. >> michael, thank you. it is 503, and cinco de mayo is celebrated throughout the bay area over the weekend and in san jose as they do every year, the event brings thousands of people to its downtown to celebrate and crawford's jack moment. was there.

despite all those celebrations that were happening, there was a double stabbing that occurred east south east side of san jose left 2 people in critical condition. multiple roads in the downtown area had to be closed by police as they responded. 2 sideshows as well. investigators say that double stabbing happened just before 5.30, in the area of south king road and lead the way a resident there that we spoke with said this is frustrating because this was supposed to be a day of celebration. >> i wouldn't say i'm not phase, but >> is is just part of life. and, you know, unfortunately things like that happen to people to do things that are unfortunate. but i don't think the majority other people should suffer for it. happy cinco de mayo. god bless and protect those people that were hurt. >> police haven't released a motive or information about the attacker. will you know when we find out? meantime, in the east bay police in oakland caught one person allegedly planning to take part in a side show last night oakland

police shared this photograph on acts saying this driver was identified as a side show promoter and arrested them for recklessly evading police. opd says it had additional units out last night to prepare to respond to any sideshows that might have popped up. on the peninsula. police arrested a man they say was caught breaking into a car. mateo county sheriff's office says they found a man breaking into a car on edison avenue in north fair oaks. when police arrived, they say the suspect ran off, but they did find him a short time later and booked him into jail. one person is dead after several cars crashed in san jose. chp says h ppened a little after one in the morning on sunday. several cars crashed on highway 1, 1, near north mathilda avenue. police shut down southbound lanes of 101 for at least 3 hours while they conducted that caused the crash. the victim hasn't been identified either. oakland police are investigating now after a person was shot and killed

near lake merritt. this is video from the citizen app. police say that shooting happened just before noon on sunday was on first avenue the victim's name hasn't been released. and in that same area, a driver crashed into the parking lot of america's best value inn on east 12th street. police haven't confirmed that the shooting and that crash were connected, but they're looking into it. >> some appear on the iconic golden gate bridge, a testament to america's greatness. california's greatest. we could be more proud announce today. record breaking tourism numbers in the state of california over 150 billion dollars tourism. spend unprecedented in our state's history. >> well, a big story that we're following this morning. governor gavin newsom heading as you just saw top of the golden gate bridge there to tout a huge tourism boost in california. the governor announcing the tourists have spent more than 150 billion dollars in california past year surpassing the

144 billion, which was a record set back in 2019 meeting. the tourism is actually better now than it was before the pandemic. governor newsom says that not only is the state retaining its title as the world's 5th largest economy. but it's also growing in population for the first time since the covid-19 pandemic. in fact, according to the latest data, the travel industry supported approximately 1.2 million jobs last year. that's up 6%. tourists created about 4% more revenue. then in 2023 and spent about 5% more as well. although the governor chose to announce the tourism boost from san francisco. the city itself is still not seeing the full recovery from covid like the rest of the state. san francisco may just over 13 billion dollars from tourism and 23rd 2023. that's about a billion more than in 2022. but it's still a billion shy of pre-pandemic records that were set in 2019 of just over 14 billion dollars. well,

meanwhile, there's an entertainment zone coming to downtown san francisco. and mayor london breed says she's working right now to allow restaurants and bars to sell alcohol during outdoor events. take a listen. >> and hang out with your friends and have a beer. and listen to music without going through some lengthy city process sound permit drama, stuff. i am trying to get rid of the bureaucracy which takes away the fun in what so many are small businesses are trying to create to continue to ensure that the vibrancy and the excitement of why people love san francisco remains. >> all the mayors legislation will be introduced at the next board of supervisors meeting tomorrow. we'll see what they say. meanwhile, san francisco isn't the only city trying to boost its downtown san jose. open new shops over the weekend. to try to revitalize the area. and we'll talk more

about that coming up. meanwhile, for people, as you can see here in this video had to be rescued after their boat overturned into most bay marin county fire along with sonoma county sheriff's deputy sprung into action sunday afternoon. you can see the rescue diver here trying to secure a rescue line to the people so they can get hoisted out of the water. pretty dramatic stuff. meanwhile. meanwhile, driverless cars are coming to the peninsula and further south in the future to a pilot program will only be available to waymo employees at first, but they say that they will be able to order writer only trips anywhere from san francisco to downtown san mateo and burlingame. we have also plans to expand its services to sunnyvale as well. the california public utilities commission approved the expansion back in january. well, happening today. may is asian american pacific islander heritage month. and this weekend, a korean

we're back at 5.14 and here are 4 things to know. tomorrow. the man accused of killing a shop owner in san francisco's richmond district will have its first preliminary hearing. santos to the rose is accused of beating sixty-year-old johanns john to wall the to death with a baseball bat outside a convenience store on balboa street back in august of last year. the suspect in a friday standoff on interstate 80 in fairfield remains in critical condition after the chp says he shot himself. chp originally reported that he was dead but said that medical teams were able to revive him at the hospital. students at

stanford continue their protest against the war in gaza over the weekend. students tell us they have received no communication from the school since last week when the university warned to camping on campus could lead to suspension or possible arrest. the a's six-day winning streak came to an end all because of the miami marlins. the a's last 12 to 3. we'll be taking on the texas rangers tonight at 6.40. well, a rare may snowstorm bringing heaps of fresh powder to this year over the weekend. take a look at this palisades tahoe saying they saw 26 inches. >> in just 24 hours, the snowfall, though, created some problems for drivers on 80 50. as you can see here, a lot of folks are facing delays due to spin outs and some dangerous conditions to everybody kept it slow. that video showing 2.18 wheelers that had to be towed along interstate 80. and john was talking about how that snowstorm, where that storm was going to give us about a month's worth rain in one day. and it looks like for

this here, john. they got themselves about 2 feet in one day. it was pretty wild to see. yeah, we definitely achieved that month's worth of rain here in the bay area between 3 quarters. >> to an inch of rainfall depending on where you are at, especially closer to the coast in spots like afternoon bay. and yeah, a lot of areas up in the sierra one to 2 feet of it. and that is going to be some amazing skiing for the start of the week. i know for most of its it's back to work today. but it's nice to have a little extra snow up there that is going to help in the summer months ahead of us now. it's not just wintry in. the sierra also feels a little wintry in the bay area this morning. take a look at some of these 30's for your morning lows in napa and santa rosa. these are cold may morning lows. definitely cooler than average for this time of year. now the snow up in the sierra, the rain in the bay area that has left the region. we're seeing this storm system now impacting much of the rocky mountain west with a lot of snowfall from colorado, utah,

on up through montana. definitely it's some lower elevations than typical for this time of year. you can see all that blue going on to the north and east of us. this system is actually going to drop into the great plains and results likelihood of severe weather for much of the remainder of the week ahead. as for the bay area and the rest of california, though, we're kind of calming things down for the rest of this forecast. we're going to see a high pressure ridge building back in and that is going to contribute to our dry and sunny skies that we have as we work our way through the remainder of this week, the weekend into next week. temperatures today are going to be in the 60's for most of us. and that is a little cooler than where we should be. this includes a lot of our inland areas to. so today is the day to keep that light jacket handy. it's definitely has the cool feel to it. but if you remember how yesterday felt once you step in the sunshine, it's not too bad at all. a very similar feeling after noon today as to what we had for your sunday vacaville and fairfield, 2 of our spots that will barely hit 70

degrees today. tomorrow's temperatures will rise into the 70's for more of us and by wednesday and the rest of the forecast after that, we're back in the 80's inland even some low 80's along the bay shore come thursday and friday, michael. thanks, john. and good morning, everyone. and happy monday. taking a look at the roads this morning. we are already seeing some delays over in the pleasanton area. there is a traffic collision right now. you can see that backup is all the way over towards 5.80. >> this accident is on southbound lanes. 6.80, at bernal avenue. the senator centered a fight or excuse me is affected. so there are multiple lanes that are currently closed. last i checked. it was down to one lane that's opening so you may want to either drive-thru castro valley on 5.80, and then utilized. 82 get anywhere in the south bay that you're trying to head this morning. so hopefully that will be clear up at least by 6 o'clock. but taking a look at some drive times and you'll see some of that affected right there that 37 to commute from dublin to fremont

livermore to dublin, though, 10 minutes, san leandro to milpitas 20 minutes milpitas to sunnyvale. 6 minutes taking a look over the antioch area. if you're heading to conquer this morning from antioch, only a 15 minute commute there and those who are using westbound 80 crockett to the maze a 16 minute commute. so not too bad. taking a look at the richmond, sandra fell bridge seven-minute commute over that. there and taking a live look at the bay bridge this morning. it's only 9 minutes to get over that bridge. those metering lights are not on quite yet. they normally get on at about 5.30, and the southbound 80 oakland, 2 to 38. it's only a 9 minute commute there. and lastly, taking a that dublin to fremont again again. 37 minute commute because there is that accident on southbound 6 james, we'll send it back to you. michael. thank you. 5.20 is >> people rallying in lafayette sunday to bring attention to the 100 hostages still being held by hamas.

attendees say it's a recurring rally over highway. 24, they held up american and israeli flags as well as faces pictures of the faces of those who've been captured. they say they want israel and hamas to reach a deal to bring those hostages home. the rallying on the bridge. there lasted about 2 hours. >> is there is no more explanation for why we now it's a was simply too, as soon as possible. stop we to worry about >> was rallying along interstate 80 there in berkeley. meanwhile, nationwide protest over the war in gaza have overwhelmed many college campuses across the country and lawmakers on capitol hill are but divided on how to handle all that

unrest. we have our washington correspondent maddie beer-temple standing by in dc with the latest on all of this maddy. >> good morning, james. will both republicans and democrats say that violent protest is unacceptable but they disagree over how president biden and some universities have responded. with graduation season under way. police are stepping in on some college campuses to clear encampments and break up clashes over the israel-hamas war. they should not have been allowed to fester on campus for 2 weeks. arkansas republican senator tom cotton told abc universities have been too slow to act. the liberal politicians refused to the police to clear them out the very first day the president addressed the protests at length for the first time last week. he denounced violence but said he supported peaceful protest. >> his campaign co-chair told cnn the president believes all students should feel safe. president's been very clear about this. he's also been

very strong about the need to stamp out anti-semitism and islamophobia. but florida republican senator marco rubio told fox news the president's comments came to lead a 7 days into this crisis that we should heard from them from the very beginning. while president biden said the protests have not affected his policy when it comes to the war in gaza, california, democrat congressman ro khanna told cbs he thinks the protests have made a difference. everyone from the president on down is aware that young people are upset at what's going on in the middle east tonight. i do think its head it awakening in washington that this war has to end. >> and so far more than 2000 protesters have been arrested across about 50 different college campuses since this all started started in mid april. >> in washington, i'm maddie beer-temple. >> all right. maddie, thank you for that update. 5.23 is the time. and coming up here just a minute with a new story here program to help kids stay fed during the summen. it's

>> we are back 5.30, is the time. let's get a check of the weather and traffic here at the half hour. we'll start with the forecast. john, talking about temperatures changing on the horizon. a job yet we're going back to the normal may stuff over the next few days. but today is going to remain a fairly cool feeling one much as yesterday was with some. >> cool sunshine across the region. you can see outside the east bay hills right here. looking good. we've got relatively clear skies overhead. not talking a lot of fog this morning and we've got a cool day on tap for us. a cool but calmer day, then much of the weekend was with the winds out there having a relaxed a lot yesterday and staying fairly calm today. it is a cold start to this morning for a lot of areas and then seasonably cold considering what time of year we're in. take a look at these 30's up in the north bay, santa rosa at 39 right now, sonoma and napa also well down in the upper 30's for current temperatures later on today.

daytime highs will rise into the 60's. that's where we're going to land this afternoon. very similar to yesterday. but warmer weather is just around the corner later this week. i'll tell you all about it in your full forecast. michael. thanks, jean. good morning, everyone. taking a look at the roads. we are seeing some delays you can see right here. 6.80, southbound lanes already backed up more than about 2 miles or so. >> there is an accident at the burn all avenue in pleasanton. so currently there's multiple lanes that are blocked. officials are trying to get to that scene to clear things out. but they, too, are also stuck in this traffic, aka, the tow truck stuck in this traffic. so keep in mind there, you may need to 5.80, go through castro valley and then takes 8.80 all the way down. if you're heading towards that area. but taking a look this morning at the bay bridge, it's a 10 minute commute over that into the city. those metering lights are just turning on right now. and a look at the san mateo bridge. it's a 12 minute commute on to the peninsula. not too bad. taking a look at

the richmond, sandra fell bridge seven-minute commute over that. and lastly, that golden gate bridge is coming in at a 19 minute commute. james, we'll send it back to you. all right, michael, thank you. 5.31 is the time. let's talk more about traffic because one of the big stories we're following this morning. >> the fact that waymo is expanding to the peninsula will soon be testing their driverless cars in 7 bay area. cities and kron four's will tran joins us live from burlingame with more on that. good morning. well, >> good morning, james. this is one of the city's the other ones include como millbrae daly city, south san francisco, all along the peninsula. of course, we've seen waymo operate in san francisco for several months now. and it has been waymo claims it is safe that they have tested their technology. but from time to time, we hear from witnesses that claim it is not safe, that it does endanger the public and they

want it shut down. but waymo continues to operate to the point where we just mentioned they will be expanding down to the peninsula. i know san mateo county is not happy about that, that they were hoping that the california public utilities commission would not allow that. but they and the dmv said it is ok, so what's going to happen is over the next several weeks. waymo will be moving its way down to the peninsula. so don't be surprised about that. however, for now, it will only be available to employees. so they want to make sure that it works and it's safe before it opens up to the public after that, then they can possibly expand to more people. but don't be surprised that there continues to be pushed back. not just in san mateo county, but also santa clara county as well. they are pushing a bill that they hope to go statewide saying yes, the dmv analogy would be james. the dmv controls the streets, the

freeways, but individual cities, they control the speed limits. so we keep that in mind. they also want to have jurisdiction over waymo at least local jurisdiction. but in the meantime, waymo still operates and it will be coming down here in burlingame in the next couple of weeks or so. >> back to very interesting. all right. well, thank you much. it's 5.33. also in the news on the peninsula. students around the bay area are continuing their protests to college campuses all in support of palestinians in gaza. now over the weekend, encampments were recovering from the rain while preparing for what's coming up next. kron four's jack moment with that story. >> well, some of the protests have been lasting for days. others weeks, but they're continuing to press forward here in the bay area with students wanting their schools to divest or be transparent about their financial ties with the nation of israel. but it may be quiet here in san jose state's campus. but pretty soon it may have its own protest as well. san

jose's gearing up for graduation, but online, there's chatter about a pro-palestine protest happening on may. saw people next to help building just like painting a big sign. robert cleveland is graduating soon and says he supports the ongoing protests, possibly reaching his i feel like it needs to be it's not happening with the government. >> at >> i mean, we're we're the ones that contain everything. coming up, head north to palo alto. this group of students a pro-palestine protest camp out on their campus. but i that everything's good posters soiled by the recent rain. but wooden pallets and tarps were able to keep students sleeping here. but friday evening, a counter-protester violated vigil of candles. students tell us. >> they say police responded and took the counter protester away. kron 4 reached out to stanford pd but did not hear back and also give them some support for to know that other people also thinking about the moment live act lives in the area and donated supplies to

stanford students. she says her daughters are part of the student encampments around the country and wants things to go peacefully. really don't understand why we're fighting. >> the students because all they're trying to ask for is for cease-fire back in san jose state. it's very like is very sad seeing it, especially when the asked people. robert cleveland says he supports the cause of pro-palestine student protests have even thought about. >> i have. but my mom said no, because you don't want and says he's looking forward to the possible protest this week. gen z and annex group are going to be future of the world, especially and we need to make a change now for not is not going to happen from the other san jose jack moment kron 4 news. >> in the east bay, oakland, police now offering reward for anyone who has information about 2 homicides that took place about a year apart. police believe they may be connected. so investigators say multiple suspects in connection with these homicides out of henri tejada

and deshawn rhoades. now tejada was shot and killed on 4/28/2020. that was near foothill in church. a great 2020 nissan armada without license plates was seen pulling up to him before multiple people got out and shot him. he was just 23 years old. that car was later recovered and determined to be a rental from reno, nevada. now roads was also killed by gunshot back on june 19th of 2021 along the lakeshore and brooklyn right in front of lake merritt. anyone with information about either of these cases is asked to from police. will the social media users have the right to control what they see or don't see on their feeds. a lawsuit filed against facebook's parent company. meta argues the company should allow people to unfollow all the content fed to them by facebook's algorithm. the suit asks the court to determine whether user's newsfeed falls into the category of objectionable material. that they should be able to filter out in order to enjoy the

platform. the lawsuit comes after meta sent cease and desist letters to app developers who are trying to create a 3rd party software that would cleanse timelines. meta declined comment. now to a story you'll see only on kron 4. a mcdonald's in oakland has been shut down after an alleged rat infestation. we've got kron four's lezla gooden that with more on the story. this mcdonald's near lake merritt apparently is now shut down because of this. and a warning. the video might be difficult to watch. >> i was right in the parking lot of a mcdonald's located at 13, 30 jackson street in oakland. department employee started turning customers away who were inside and in the middle of the drive-thru. i asked what was the cause of the store closure. this was her response from the health department. they have some sanitation the season. they need to clean up. >> what did you find you mind telling >> and this comes while 6

preliminary hearing after allegedly attacking a shop owner in san francisco's richmond district. santos de la rosa is accused of beating sixty-year-old yohannes john to wall to death with a baseball bat outside a convenience store on balboa street. this was back in august of last year to all the attempted to stop rosa from shoplifting. that's when the attack occurred while he died in the hospital 5 days later. de la rosa evaded arrest before being apprehended in september. de la rosa faces several charges now including murder and assault with a eadly weapon. he's going be in court at 9 o'clock tomorrow morning. overdoses and airbnbs. those will be 2 hot topics on tomorrow's agenda for the marin county board of supervisors. their supervisors are planning to discuss overdose prevention strategies and regulations for short-term rental houses like airbnbs and vrbo is the board will also go over the county's plan on aging. we'll let you know what they decide on all those topics. meanwhile, a bay area baseball, the a's taking on the miami marlins at the
