seminole and caltrans says that if you're going to be traveling through the area this weekend, be prepared for traffic and 6.80, southbound from the 5.80, connector down to coop in road is now closed through early monday morning. caltrans says crews will be replacing deteriorating roadway with new pavement. >> and they're hoping to get a lot done. and just a short amount of time over the weekend, we're going to do all this work and what this is the benefit of this weekend work is that we're reducing about 40 nights of work into just 3 days. but the work also means slow driving and detours. >> signs will be posted along the freeway. >> and the highway patrol will be helping to keep traffic moving along. the detour is listed by caltrans pushes most affected drivers heading south to 8.80. you can take 24 or 5.80 and continue along. but if you're coming from farther east past livermore, you can take 84 and reconnect. and a 6

downtown san francisco. 47 miles per hour or so whipping around the bay area this afternoon. things calming down just slightly. now the winds still that sea breeze blowing around couple clouds begin to flirt with some of the coastline. there. and some patchy fog likely overnight tonight. the whole pattern, though, beginning to shift gears as we get ready for a nice weekend. weather wise high pressure start to build in that cold front that brought some showers that sliding out of town. some thunderstorms erupting this afternoon as the sun set losing the energy kind of dissipating. but out the door right now, we still have a couple lingering clouds around the bay area, staying mostly dry outside right now. i think for the weekend we're looking good. the winds not still going to be breezy, especially % along the coastline. otherwise we've got some nice weather head. i think we'll see these temperatures warming up a few degrees. maybe stick in the low 70's in some of the interior valleys, maybe even mid 70's as we head in towards sunday, rather mild, though, breezy along the coastline. but it will be dry for the weekend. thank you, lawrence. tonight we are learning 2 of the 4 victims killed in a >> fiery crash in pleasanton

were under the age of 15. the crash happened wednesday night. this is video of the aftermath the area foothill road just south of stone ridge drive that crash happening right where the road switches from 2 lanes to one. it appears the car swerved off the road crashed into a light pole and then hit a tree. investigators say speed may have been a factor in that crash. tonight, a family is remembering the life of a young boy whose life was cut short in a dui crash in richmond. >> his family says emma dale alvarez junior was traveling with 4 people last night to last wednesday, rather when a drunk driver crashed into their car. police say they have arrested the driver. earlier today. the oakland police department honored the life of police officer jordan wingate. he passed away over the weekend. a public memorial service was held this morning at 3 crosses church in castro valley. >> when gates casket was met with officers from all across the bay area. he was named rookie of the year by the

oakland police officers association in 2018 and that same year is when he was seriously injured in a crash while on duty. he spent the last 6 years on life support in hospital until he died last saturday when kate was 28 years old. >> a son, a brother, a family member, a friend, a talented police officer with a bright future with so much for college and so much more to humanity. new george described as dedicated, hard-working, respectful and fighting practical joker. just like that. yeah. huge part in a way you feel like you are his best friend. >> wingate began his public service career as oakland police cadet in 2013 when he was just 18 years old, he then became a patrol officer with opd wingate is the 55th oakland police officer killed in the line of duty. >> the man who got into a fight with a police officer in san jose trying to protect the san jose mayor has been

released from jail and will be free until his next court appearance conference. jack moment was a reporter who caught that fine on camera. >> wesley paul, it is the name of the man at the center of that video from downtown san jose that seemingly spread across the nation like wildfire and the judge today here in downtown san jose ordered him to be released until his next court date. but that wasn't the case throughout the day. judge actually originally wanted to keep him in the video that started it all. >> have several minutes of a man fighting a plainclothes san jose police officer who was serving as the mayor's security detail. wesley pollard was arrested and charged with battery. disturbing the peace and threatening an officer. at first the judge seemingly wanted to keep pollard in jail based on his reading of the police report. but after viewing kron four's video, he appeared change his stance. granted pollard conditional release paul argued potter does not have a violent past and was trying to actually get away from the undercover

officer. i was shaking my head a lot and there's a lot of mistakes made. john allen, the vice president with the san jose naacp says the officer's conduct surrounding the arrest should be investigated and that pollard was profiled against, you know, to arrest prosecute him for exercising right? the naacp sent a letter to san jose police department requesting an investigation. san jose pd center statement in response saying the officer repeatedly stated he was an officer. the naacp says they never heard that in the video which recorded the entire fight. it would have been de-escalated by the officer identified himself early on in the interaction. >> at least what i saw all that didn't have. the mayor's office tells us they stand by the officers decisions and they are certain more details will come from the san jose police department. >> at some of those conditions of release include staying 300 yards away from city hall mayor matt mahan and that san jose police officer that was acting as mayhem security detail at the time. now, speaking of city hall, i did talk to a few people on the

inside who say that they do recognize pollard. they actually tell me that he has threatened them before. >> for now, we're in downtown san jose jack moment from 4 news. >> these open residents say they want to keep pamela price as the alameda county district attorney to get yet gathered this morning to oppose the recall election, which they say it's a waste of tax money. according to the alameda county. registrar of voters, a recall election could cost the county about 20 million dollars. meantime, the group is asking for a recall that is asking for a recall is hoping county supervisors. we'll set an election date during next tuesday's meeting. now that enough signatures have been verified. >> another bird in the bay area has been found to be infected by west nile contra. costa county officials say the virus is found in a dead crow and conquered earlier this month. it's the county's first case of the year. officials in

alameda, san mateo and santa clara counties have already reported infected birds this year to reduce the risk of mosquitoes. and west nile officials are reminding residents to dump any standing water collected in all sorts of containers, including toys, tools, pet bowls and even something as small as a water bottle. >> hundreds of costco customers in concord were told to leave the store today after a chemical leak. this was the scene about 5 o'clock this evening when all the entrances to the store were blocked off following what officials say was a refrigerant leak. the chemical fluid is used in air conditioning systems and heat pumps. our officials say store employees became aware of the leak when someone spotted a white cloud moving through the store. a store reopened later in the evening. nobody was hurt. >> there will be no bart service this weekend between rockridge station in oakland and the lafayette station. the transit agency says it upgrading one of its tracks and will provide free buses for bart riders as a result of

the closure. bart says you can expect about a 20 minute delay. sausalito ferry will .% remain closed this weekend. last friday, an inspection found one of the pier pilings was damaged. >> a fepry spokesperson said they can only work during low tide. so repairs may take some time. golden gate ferry hopes to have the sausalito service back up and running by sometime next week. and while those repairs being made, a transit bus will be taking passengers across the golden gate bridge. >> adults that are showing a lot of interest in bed and that really are aiming to get close to that. and they don't really understand. lot. >> still ahead tonight, what oakland leaders are doing at a local high school to try and combat human trafficking. students and stanford join thousands of protesters across the country in support of palestine, building a community of tents on campus, calling it people's university for gaza. and takes off with the cash register of an oakland donut shop with the owners telling us tonight about that man and how police

to the officer, but they never >> big stone, it's has been in business for about 20 years. we reached out to oakland police. but so far we have not got no response. >> take a look here are your looking at thousands of dollars worth of cosmetics and other items stolen from various retail stores across the bay area. investigators found all of this at 2 homes in oakland. some of the items have been linked to deaths reported in san mateo county and san ramon. investigators say they've returned many of the stolen goods back to those retail stores. >> senate candidate adam schiff had his car broken into this week while visiting san francisco and although car break-ins certainly aren't rare in the city, police say they're actually happening less frequently run forrest lezla gooden reports. adam schiff is currently running to fill the late senator dianne feinstein, senate seat. >> and was in san francisco making several appearances. he was dining at the thing restaurant when his luggage was stolen while his car was

parked and a downtown parking garage, his luggage allegedly in view on facebook. the democratic congressman posted this picture at the restaurant and a hiking best, which is a more casual look than what he's typically seen. it. we reached out to the san francisco police department about the theft and they tell us there's no report related to this incident, according to sfpd crime data vehicle, property theft is down by 58% from this time last year and a good thing. kuz kuz ellen stopping them from from from. >> continue to do it. >> a trend that jay tease auto repair says they have noticed define last had leave. >> and cars come in for for when the repairs? well, we've got a lot a lot of cars coming in for the best of before. but but now we don't see any haven't seen any for since the beginning of the year. >> let's get in kron. 4 news.

>> more pro-palestine protests continue around the world. this video is from the university of oxford in the uk where nancy pelosi was speaking yesterday. university student got up in front of her and held up that palestinian flag interrupting her speech here in the bay area. students stanford are showing their support for palestine and calling for the university to stop any financial aid to israel. kron four's rob nesbitt spent the afternoon speaking with students. >> the mood was relaxed with music friday afternoon inside what's being called the people's university for gaza around. 25 tents set up by students at stanford university to protest the war in gaza. they don't have >> you could make that happen. they have left. >> the tense formed after hundreds gathered for a rally at the university thursday

afternoon. one of the organizers, young soo kim says demonstrators are asking the university to disclose any investments that 8 israel in the war. basically asking us make specific targeted oscar night that without. >> revealing and you the make it even according to the university around 60 students camping out at white memorial plaza were handed side letters thursday night. >> notifying them that tense and overnight camping violate university policy. a statement from stanford university president richard saller saying in part, quote, these letters inform students that failure to seize conduct in violation of university policy would result in a referral to the office of community standards, student conduct process and also can result in arrest if laws are violated. the students were also warned that their participation could result in suspension. >> arrests have been made at other university protests. what students at stanford say they plan to stay at the newly formed camping site until the requester behind >> presence of police on

campus. so already just by doing got the university intimidate students from speaking out against the city university reporting at stanford university. harbaugh been has been kron. 4 news. >> fallout also continued at other colleges across the country. there is now an encampment at ucla while heightened security measures remain in place all around the usc campus as well and tree limited there to just staff and students and for students in the graduating class of 2024, heartbreak is still sinking in about commencement cancellations there at usc, columbia, facing some similar challenges in encampment at that new york campus remains despite a deadline from the school to clear out. >> that's not what you want to see when driving down the freeway, especially if you're going in that direction. a massive tornado outside lincoln, nebraska, today is just one of a number of

twisters that touched down in several counties across nebraska and into nearby states. kron four's lawrence karnow tracking the situation in the midwest yet really scary. i mean, dozens upon dozens of tornadoes possibly touching down. >> across parts of the plains today as the storm system just rolling on through there. and it's not done yet. we've got another day of probably severe weather for tomorrow as it's going start to push a little further to the east. but this area of low pressure spinning around, you see the storm out ahead of it. the cold front making its way parts of ohio right now. but we're going to see more of that is always going to start to slide eastward overnight tonight and tomorrow. but numerous reports you see all the circles here. the reports of heavy hail. you see the want to read. those are tornadoes, possible tornadoes and funnel clouds reported all along these areas all along that frontal boundary as that system moved on by and doing some damage as it moved on through tonight, seeing some more activity a little further south and that hes going to be some flash flooding in some of those areas and flooding conditions. as we've seen some very heavy rainfall. once that system moved on by and they're not

done by any means. in fact, they've got a long way to go. here's the latest forecast for tomorrow for severe weather across the country midst that mid section you see omaha. yeah, you're right. in the bull's eye, they're stretching all the way to the south and in all the way to texas, we're going to see that strong line of thunderstorms making his way across the country. so the latest forecast model showing you some of that. all of a sudden by tomorrow afternoon. watch what happens here all. that moisture comes out the south and there you go. you've got another round, a potentially severe weather as we head toward tomorrow. all right. let's get you back out here in the bay area overnight tonight. still some gusty winds in the bay area, but it's not the winds. it is just a construction were going on at the sfo that is causing some major delays. there no delays being reported. oakland or also san jose looking good in the monterey bay. you'll get forecast will be breezy out there tomorrow. 50's for highs there. southern california. you'll see some wind to the warmer temperatures. 72 in los angeles about 75 degrees in santa barbara. 71 in pasadena in the high country headed

>> the family of a man who has been in a coma for the last 20 days is now suing east bay police. the attorney for the family says down to a phase on was approached by police at martin luther king junior regional shoreline park because the attack and his car was expired. police say phase on and tried to run away and ended up going in the water. that's when they tased him and phase on went unconscious. the lawyers for dante family say cpr was not administered until 30 minutes later. >> coming up next, an attorney sentenced in san francisco for trying to kill his wife. investigators say he tried to get an fbi agent to do it. plus. >> how students in the east bay and east bay schools are receiving tools and how to combat human trafficking now

at 10, 30 in advisory council has been visiting high schools in oakland this week as kron four's dan kerman reports students are getting the tools needed to avoid being caught up in trafficking. >> friday, students taking part in a resource fair. oakland's reds stale high school were not only getting college and career advice but learning how to avoid being caught up in teen trafficking. we are seeing lots and lots of cases. >> of child trafficking and even more so as children are on the internet and social media now more than ever post pandemic nola brantley is a survivor and a member of the mayor's advisory council on human trafficking.

prison in a san francisco courtroom for promising to pay an fbi agent $50,000 to murder. his ex. officials say alan gessen wasn't a years long legal battle over custody of his 2 kids with his ex-wife. they say his original plan was to brive immigration agents to deport her to her home country. but then he more cheaper and more permanent option would be to kill her. investigators say this happened back in 2022. when guests and met with the undercover fbi agent on 2 occasions first, florida and then again in new york city evidence showed in court showed guests and wired a total of $23,000 to that fbi undercover bank account in san francisco. investigators say guests and was going to pay the rest of the money. ex-wife was killed. >> it appears justices in the supreme court may rule in favor of cities in a case on whether or not to allow punishment for people sleeping outside when shelters are at full capacity here in the bay

area. san francisco officials say they've been blocked from enforcing camping regulations because the city doesn't have enough shelter space for its homeless population. california's lieutenant governor has been paying close attention to the hearings in this case. >> it does appear as though the court is going to side with the cities and when they make this decision, if it goes that way, that ability to clear encampments when necessary by the city's he's probably going to be restored. >> a decision on the case is expected later this year. >> san francisco mayor london breed wants to get rid of barriers for food vendors participating in markets and block parties. currently vendors are required to buy a temporary permit at each event and those permits can cost up to nearly $300 depending on the food being served. now the mayor is proposing to waive those fees with a special permit. vendors would only have to buy once. >> a new state bill is looking to lower the amount of

homework that high school students take home. it's called the healthy homework act. a survey from stanford shows it 45% of students say homework is their number one cause of stress also shows that high school children spent on average 2 hours doing homework every night. >> is exhausting. it's overwhelming. and it's depressing that my whole day from when i wake up until when i go to bed is nearly all taken up with schoolwork. >> the bill passed the assembly education committee. so has a long way to go before reaching the governor's desk. >> non u.s. citizens students could soon be allowed to vote in school elections at san francisco city college supporters say this gives more students a voice in how their school is managed. non-citizen students would still need to be at least 18 and a resident in the city in order to cast their vote. leaders at the school pass the measure now heads to the citywide ballot through the san francisco board of supervisors. tick season is right around the

lawrence. it's been a long week and cold all week looking for some more. yeah. a lot of folks get outdoors and enjoy a little sunshine. i think this weekend to it looks like a great weekend ahead. >> going to be dry weekend around the bay area. that will be a bit of a breeze. we've seen that wind really kind of kicking up around the bay area today, still breezy even into tomorrow, but not as much in the temperatures going to start to warm up looking good out toward the golden gate bridge tonight, you've got mostly clear skies there. i think overnight tonight, just a few passing clouds, the gusty winds still continuing outside tomorrow, more breezy, but mostly sunny skies. and i think mostly sunny, some mild warm temperatures as we get into sunday, too. we did have feom this past storm. in fact, not bad at all from a storm. those falling apart, almost a 10th of an inch of rain in pacifica for hundreds in san francisco. just drop in the bucket there in concord, in san leandro. not much in san jose. just enough to get the ground wet, but we did feel those gusty winds. we had a gust today in downtown san francisco, 40 miles an hour. what had one of 47 miles per hour in the sunset. 44 in

oakland, 40 in hayward, san jose. 31 mile an hour gust. 37 in novato and 35 mile an hour gust as you major way in the south bay. so, yeah, the gusty winds. they continue around the bay area tonight. still some wind blown around just a bit tomorrow that sea breeze will pick up again toward the afternoon. and it looks like it will be a little blustery specially along the coastline, not as much inside the bay. the onshore flow continues out there for tonight and more. those winds will kick up as we head toward tomorrow afternoon. once again, high pressure, though, trying to build. wayne here is that ridge slides in kind of a flat ridge. there's one more front that was the right over the top of that ridge. and so kind of a flat ridge, some passing clouds maybe late in the day tomorrow. but the winds the biggest weather story around the bay area tomorrow. you see those winds kind of wrapping up as we head toward tomorrow afternoon again, start to see some of those gusts of 20 and 30 miles an hour along the coastline. first clouds are concerned. yeah, just some passing clouds as we head through the night tonight. maybe couple patches of fog and then a few more clouds by tomorrow afternoon. but overall, i think we're looking

at some nice weather temperatures tomorrow will be a little bit warmer. part of the 50's and 60's little breeze in the san francisco along the coastline. staying on the cool side to get inside the bay warming up just a little bit work your way down the peninsula. more sunshine on the way and some warmer weather about 70 degrees in san jose. breaking out the 70's, the east bay tomorrow afternoon. 72 in pleasanton, 71 dublin, very comfortable. 70 walnut creek. idea you get away from the water's edge of find some nice weather is warm. temperatures around the bay area and it looks like we've got some nice weather to come. here we go. we're going to round out april and had and but we're talking about some warmer weather on the way. a nice weekend. maybe some temperatures getting near 80 degrees by wednesday. then will cool things down next thursday and friday. there's even a slight chance we might start talking about some rain next week, but it doesn't to cold, though, at least know we get late in the season. now for those real cold out. yeah. so yeah, not as bad but you get some of that san francisco fog. >> little wind it could be downright chilly. just a layered up. that's right. thanks, lawrence. okay. federal regulators say tesla's
