>> from the bay area's local news station. we now with breaking news. breaking news is in the crowd for in san francisco. as you can see, a big fire. >> it's in an apartment building on the lion and clay street. and this is in the presidio heights neighborhood. 60 firefighters right now on scene battling this blaze. now the fire department says the fire is coming from all 4 floors of the building right now. they're asking people in that area to shut their windows. there's a lot of heavy smoke. there been no reports of any injuries thus far. but kron four's will tran is on his way to the scene will bring us a live update as soon as he gets there. all right. well, we're hoping that nobody is injured. as you can see, there's a lot of

scaffolding on that building. so and they told everybody in neighboring buildings to close the windows were really hoping that that was under construction and that there are no people there. that's one of the things that we'll find out as soon as he gets on the ground there. all right. 6 o'clock is the time. thank you for joining us here on the kron. 4 morning news on this friday. i'm james flow and i'm daria and we've got the weather for you. dave is in for john and we hit the weekend. so >> let's talk about our outdoor plans to work out. good morning, james and darya. good morning. good morning, everybody. the weekend does look pretty dandy. we are starting things off a little bit of that coastal drizzle. >> a bit and some wet roads here and there was some of that fog. but that's going to break up for us. and we're actually seeing some patches and sober cameras showing us some patches of blue skies trying appear on through right now. here's what we've got going on on radar. a couple splotches again. it looks like and some of the hills in the east bay and down south as well. but here's the shot from the golden gate. look at that. how it's really open up very nicely. but that consistent onshore wind you can see from the flag that's going continue all day today and at a good

clip at that. now, this lows drop into the west coast. it just doesn't have a lot of moisture which to play with. it's going to be driving, though. some pretty fierce winds. we're going to see a lot more, though in. so cal, with all of right now are winds. you can see pretty much teens and 20's along the coast. that's going provide that extra chill even into your saturday, too. middle to upper 50's to be found in the east bay. so temperatures are actually pretty mild today than they were compared to yesterday. 58 by 10 o'clock. skies open 61 by one. we still have to share it with the sun and clouds mixture. a bit a warm-up expected this week and we'll have details. rain is checking bay area traffic right all right, dave, we'll start out the last hour with a hot spot. >> that was on 5.80, in at 80 connector. as you're traveling into the city, that is now clear they fully traffic is moving again. we're already starting to build at the bay bridge about 15 minutes there. no major accidents or collisions in this hour. 13 minutes long or 70. 0 bridge. checking on the richmond center fell bridge now. 7 minute right? golden gate bridge around 19 minutes. get

a look at those highways. you can see for is a little busy, the bay bridge. but for the most part, we're looking at green on your commute. darnya's is brought back to you. thank you. reyna to another big story that we're following. an east bay community is mourning the loss. >> of a family who was killed in a crash. so investigators say this family of 4 was in their car when it crashed into a tree. >> and the vehicle burst into flames. kron 4 sarah stinson has the story. >> people continue to drop off flowers here on foothill road where a mom dad and their 2 kids died in a car crash. neighbors of the family say they were headed home from a friend's house when the crash happened. >> it's sad and tragic. >> a community grieving the loss of a family of 4 killed in a car crash wednesday night in pleasanton neighbors, family, friends and co-workers pulled over on foothill road thursday to drop off flowers at the crash site sits very

shocking. hassan shaikh says he worked with the dead of the family. great >> whether work great >> police say the crash happened around 9 at night. it appears the family's electric car hit a pole before striking a tree and bursting into flames. the tree has fresh for marks on it and the road is covered in flame retardant phone. neighbors of the family say they want police have only released limited information saying they're thoroughly investigating the crash and there's no indication of alcohol or foul play involved with family crash, right where the road emerges from 2 lanes to one people who live nearby say driving on this stretch of road is dangerous. there's like no lights at all. it's really dark. >> and i a lot of people speed here, at least one of the kids who died in the crash was a student in the pleasanton unified school district. the district says it's providing

counselors and resources to support those affected. this off all the loss of an entire family >> our our focus is always and how we support. how do we support students and staff and families? the family was driving a vinfast car. >> that's a vietnamese electric car manufacturer. it's only been around a few years. and i spoke with a family friend off camera. she tells me she wants police to investigate to see if the car malfunctioned. other stopping by say they hope this is a somber reminder to all to be extra careful on the road. i'm sara stinson reporting in pleasanton. back to you. >> well, 604, happening today in the east bay, oakland police will be honoring one of their own oakland police officer jordan wingate who died last saturday from injuries that he sustained in a car crash back in 2018 while he was on duty. the memorial service will be held at 3 cross church in castro valley. it will begin at 11 o'clock

this morning and it is open to the public. all are invited. new this morning lanes now open on the 5.80, to 80 connector at the macarthur maze following a solo vehicle crash that happened earlier this morning. you can see here in the video there was a car flipped over onto its hood. no word yet. if there are any injuries or how many people were in that car. but good news is now those lanes are clear. the accident has been taken away. so all lanes back open again. it's 605. and today in south bay, the man accused of attacking the police officer who was protecting san jose mayor matt mahan is going to be arraigned. >> this happened tuesday in the middle of a crowd for interview. we are talking to the mayor in downtown san jose when this guy walked up. >> his name is wesley pollard and he ended up punching the plainclothes police officer was a time a sign there to protect the mayor. the man in the suit that you see a felony or with pollard has been charged with a felony resisting. i'm an officer by means of threat or violence. charged with a misdemeanor

battery. disturbing the peace as well. pollard also had an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. it's 6, 0, 6, and 27 year-old mark simon, who you see here faces attempted kidnapping and child charges in walnut creek. he was arrested as police were responding to a report that there was an attempted kidnapping of a child at downtown library on north broadway. that happened 2 weeks ago. police say they found more than 600 images of child on the electronic device that simon was carrying. he remains in custody now in 2 million dollars bail. police are asking anyone who may be a victim of simon to call them. >> well, police in concord are also looking for a man who they say tried to grab a little girl who was on her way to school. it happened just after 7 wednesday morning near nuala street and dartmouth way. that girl who is in

middle school told police that a man tried to grab her arm wpwhile also trying to open the door of a parked car. police say she told them the man had a small black car and that's all she was able to describe. president. he a workers say that they were blindsided to learn about the agency's plan to increase ticketing for illegal parking. about 200 workers held a rally in front of the sfmta headquarters. the workers say the recent announcement to crack down on illegal parking is putting targets on their backs. one parking control officers that we talked to says that she has already been assaulted on the job. but you still want to take who was illegally part. he didn't like that. he got a ticket because he was doing doordash. >> so i continued on my my route. follow me about 2 or 3 blocks. waited until i stopped at a stop punched a window. and as a result, the glasgow >> but workers say they want safer vehicles and a seat belt on the table with the sfmta

leaders when important decisions are made or a seat at the table. we did reach out to the agency regarding these concerns and were given the following statement that reads in part, quote, safety is our top priority at the agency. thanks to our efforts. crime is down. 48 1% since 2018 within our system. our parking control officers are provided de-escalation training, self-defense tools and have access to our internal dispatch center that communicates directly with the sfpd for any assistance we need for any assistance they need. and quote, now the workers are hoping that improvements will be made once the agency and workers complete their neighbor or their labor negotiations. >> 608, right now. and road closures continuing around the bay area and a lot of traffic expected this weekend because of it. that includes the southbound lanes on 80 in pleasanton and highway. 37 between vallejo and sears point. you barr is also planning on closing part of its tracks in oakland this weekend as well. we have kron

four's rob nesbitt with all those details. >> there are a detour set up for drivers and buses plan for bart riders. >> but both barton, caltrans are asking for patience from travelers who will experience a longer weekend commute time than usual the side of paving and construction along the southbound lanes of i-680, are not new. this weekend will be the 4th and final time. the project closes the interstate from pleasanton starting 09:00pm friday and reopening at 04:00am monday. according to caltrans spokesperson for alameda county, janice morrow. we will be completely placing the roadway. >> with cement, which is a very horrible and long-lasting material. so in the roadway reopened 04:00am monday. it will be a smooth ride for a moment. traffic will be rerouted during the work as well as along highway. 37 starting on friday at 09:00pm. we're back on westbound state route. 37. >> in the to the sonoma county line, caltrans spokesperson for that area chinchilla.

>> says this is the second weekend lanes have been closed to traffic at this location. the detour is a long one. >> would normally is a 7.10, mile stretch that takes people 15 to 20 minutes. it is now a 25 mile detour that goes through solano county. napa county. >> and sonoma county delays by car and by train. >> bart will be suspending service between rockridge station in oakland and lafayette station this weekend. chris filippi says is to keep workers along the tracks safe, a role, but they all have this week. it is they'll be replacing lighting in the berkeley hills tunnel. so obviously we don't want to be reading trains through the tunnel as our workers are replacing those lights. he says free buses will be waiting at rockridge in lafayette to transport riders to their next stop. adding about 20 minutes of travel time. but the work is long overdue. many of the components being replaced across the bart system are more than 50 years old. they've got to go. they have outlived their design life more work along. i-680, and highway. 37 is scheduled after this weekend. the eastbound

cool. >> the club's i love the first hour 12 bucks for kids under 12. okay. yeah. well, it looks like this weekend might be good when you get out there. enjoy some real estate. yeah. just got to get through this rainy morning. good morning, danielle bit of drizzle. good morning, james and good morning. everybody. weekend is shaping up very nicely at that, is showing up a little bit on radar just to make the notation here on the east bay shoreline a little bit in and out of the santa clara valley. >> later on today, kind of watching out maybe in the far east bay, you could see a return of a few showers. but there you have it from the shop. the golden gate bridge looks ominous, though. it's opening up, though. there's the flag indicate the good stuff onshore winds that we have now, there is a possibility we could see some thunder showers later on today in the central valley up to the mountains of extending all the way through the rockies. as you can see. without even knowing what's going on. if he saw something like this, you think all that must be the monsoon that's bubbling up back towards the west. well, up being driven by that, it says this low in our backyard, that doesn't really have a lot of moisture with which to work with mid-fifties. you can see

on the board for right now. pretty mild lower 50's up north. we got 54 meanwhile for half moon bay. so even if the coast, it's fairly mild. there's the opening up gradually a little bit today. there's the flareup of those showers and thunder showers throughout the central valley today. tonight, it's really calm and quiet. might have some fog return along the coast. maybe some drizzle as well. opening up for your saturday. looking pretty good at that fuel stray clouds by the evening. but we're going up those temps a little bit on you for sunday winds, a stiff onshore wind all day today. it will start to subside a little bit inland, but really become a little bit more abrasive along the coast will call and that adds an extra little chill to see. you're fighting the fog in the clouds and you have with that a cold onshore wind. keep that in mind, particularly for tomorrow as will have some slow coastal clearing again with that pop and winds. so here's the game plan. we've got that morning. drizzle, one breezy and all that stuff for today. cool in the 60's for this weekend. we're going up into the 70's. pretty nice. pretty close.

darya james, back to you. >> and he's a part of redwood road in castro valley. as you can see here is off limits. it's closed because of a sinkhole. so the road is blocked off. but north of redwood can golf course and chabot regional park. >> and you can see it here, but there is a sinkhole there and the estimation for. >> when they fix that and get reopen us some time. i well, they haven't said that. next month's going walk. >> in the north bay, fire crews put out a boat fire out at berryessa in napa county. you can see the flames there. the boat caught fire wednesday while it was docked at markley cove. and welsh they had to cut it loose to prevent the fire from spreading. they say nobody was hurt. the cause of the fire is now being investigated. >> time now is 6.20, and north bay lawmakers have a plan to help the current property insurance crisis that we're in. it's hard to get home insurance exactly. at companies like state have announced that they will not renew at least 70,000 property owner policies. many. they say

because of fire risk across gayle ong has more. >> fema grants for homeowners in designated areas and a tax credit for property owners. that's a 30% tax credit and a $10,000 grant. >> the 2 key components that make up. congressman mike thompson disaster resiliency and coverage act co sponsored by representative jared huffman. when you put it all together, this is an important piece of making sure that insurance remains available. and also affordable. >> to the folks that we committed almost 7 years ago. to continuing to stand with him to serve. the proposed bill is aimed to help with the property insurance crisis. >> it is modeled after a program in alabama after homes are impacted by severe weather. it was the same want same story from every insurance company and it was. >> make sure that there's disaster resilience in a

building that homeowners did everything necessary to protect their home from any type of disaster. same thing with landowners, the backdrop of thursday's press conference took place in santa rosa's coffey park neighborhood. >> and the area that was virtually wiped out by the 2017 north bay fires among the speakers, sonoma county elected officials and also wildfire survivors. this bill will support efforts like defensible space clearing enhanced emergency water access, fire, oppression systems, technology, and automated systems that assist first responders and much more education is on the rise. but we have to acknowledge that the financial increases in the cost of insurance is leaving many without funds to do the work to protect their homes, families and communities. when asked about how much this bill will cost taxpayers loss of insurance to homeowners is going to be devastating by itself. >> you add to that a disaster too. and the price tag is over

>> we are back time now 6.25 and multiple bay area. law enforcement agencies recovered more than $300,000 worth of stolen goods in oakland, california. highway patrol says they found products from stores like walmart. tj maxx, sunglass hut in this suspected fencing operation. you can see in this video just samples what they took in the volume of what they took. the investigation began last september in san mateo county when sheriff's deputies arrested several people linked to retail theft in the bay area. just 2 months later, san ramon police link 2 women to that very same retail theft ring after they were arrested again for stealing from a local so far. the 3 agencies then obtain search warrants for 2 oakland homes and a storage container where they found all these items. countering heading southbound collided with a motorcycle on thursday. police say no rider was present in the motorcycle seemed to be abandoned on the tracks. police are still investigating but say of the

260 passengers on board at the time of the crash. none were hurt after the collision. all trains were stopped for some time as they cleaned up the area before eventually opening all tracks later that day on thursday and 6.26. in new this morning. a proposal to equip new cars with speed safety systems. >> is moving forward in sacramento. the bill was introduced in january and would mandate new cars made or sold in california starting in 2027 that they have speed limiters to restrict the vehicle from going more than 10 miles an hour over the speed limit after a hearing and getting some pp back about the potential dangers of physical speed limiters. the bill has been amended now and it only requires visual and audio signals that you would alert you that you are going over the speed limit. the mandate would apply to half of new vehicles in 2029 and then all vehicles in 2032, it passed the california senate transportation committee now has on to the senate appropriations committee.

what some roads apparently. well, we'll take care of that by the late morning hours. opening up the skies we can see in some spots, even the golden gate looks like things are starting to open up. but first, things first. yes on radar. a couple spots has our making it through. there is kind of a a layer of dry to wet, to dry to wet as you go upstairs. so it has some dry air in which to negotiate with. but you don't see any real good plume of moisture here. so this low can do whatever wants to do, but it doesn't any moisture which to play with. so we get the clouds and we get the winds that it will deliver. there's a going on here for you last check. there were no delays. we'll check again to see what's going on. little fog bank there. there's your onshore winds in the teens in some 20's will see the uptick a bit, particularly along the coast. and remember, this will be a chilly wind. same thing for tomorrow to mid 50's to upper 50's on the reading. so fairly mild start. 58 at 10 o'clock by one. we're at 61 with some variable clouds but looks pretty sweet for your weekend here. lower 70's at work. and that's pretty close. those averages. barry of

traffic, right? what's going on? all right. with a busy this morning. we have a traffic hazard. >> right now, the treasure island exit looks like something on a vehicle might fallen off a part. no accidents there, but that's the dow because now got to get that off the bridge. so about 90 minutes from the maze to that fremont street exit there. other bridges, no hazards. 14 minutes on the san mateo bridge, richmond center fell bridge still under 12 in the golden gate bridge around 19 minutes. there. the already traveling last 6.80, on the southbound side, no issues. but on the northbound side that rally the free mott's a little minor traffic collision. also a slight delay as you're heading up north arias is back to you. thanks a lot. reyna. okay. 6.31, is the time and breaking news this morning. san francisco firefighters on the scene right now. the massive fire. >> at an apartment building. this is online and clay streets in the upper city heights neighborhood. you can see there's a multistory building scaffolding outside you know, engulfed in flames about 60 firefighters on scene right now. you can see it's 4

floors and they're telling people who live in that area to close their windows because of all that heavy smoke. >> we haven't and this video, we don't see any emergency vehicles like ambulances or anything. so we're just hoping nobody's hurt. kron four's will tran is on his way. we'll get a live update from him soon. ok? well, shoppers in the east bay a bit stunned to find out that they're losing their walmart. yeah, this walmart and a fremont is closing for good kron four's. dan thorn has the story. >> for nearly 20 years this walmart, he's served customers on al brace street in fremont next month. it's closing for good. i am very shocked. that explosion >> with many of so long, this kind fortunate they're closing the store shoppers tell us this is been there. go to walmart since it first opened back in 2006. >> a sign at the store's entrance sharing the closing date next month as well as reduced hours. the company says this location is one of several nationwide that have not been making enough. money

starts always been very busy. the reason that given again for not having enough revenue to keep the store open, his is is is questionable. a walmart spokesperson tells kron 4 the closure affects more than 150 employees. >> those workers are being encouraged to transfer to other bay area stores, including one. that's roughly 3 miles away. fremont shoppers will now have to go to the city's osgood road location come next month or travel. even farther to union city or milpitas. it's kind of disappointing a because this punt this place is like the closest to where is. >> the store's new hours are from 07:00am to 07:00pm. >> and this location officially closes on. may 24th in fremont. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> 6.34 is the time there's now a hotline in alameda county for victims of 35 people whose death penalty cases are now being reviewed. district attorney pamela price. as we reported yesterday, unveiled that her

office uncovered what may have been a pattern of misconduct in those trials dating back almost 30 years. prosecutors apparently during that time had purposely excluded black and jewish people from serving on those death penalty. juries price as family members of the victims by those on death row are now being informed of what's going on. but anyone who has not been contacted is asked to contact them on the alameda county district attorney's website. >> police and pacific are looking for this man. he was seen starting a fire on pacific u.s. fairway park area about epril 10th is when this happened and they say that he has visited the archery range of the park several times over the past month. so they would like to question him. it is 6.35. and san francisco city workers are trying to improve their computer system after went down yesterday. kron four's dan kerman takes a closer look. this system is integral to dispatching police and fire whenever they get a 9-1-1. call. >> one day after the ribbon

was cut on san francisco's new 9-1-1, dispatch center. the computer system that integral to dispatching emergency service personnel went down. we had it what we call a cad outage where we had a failure, had our computer aided dispatch. >> went san francisco's computer, aided dispatch system or cad allows those taking 9-1-1. calls to take incoming information into a computer which police and fire dispatchers in another part of the 9-1-1 center can see and send help immediately when the system went down at 05:00am. that automatic communication had to be done manually, meaning notes had to be written down and then physically handed to the appropriate dispatcher to send help and something like this happens. it's all hands on deck. so we bring people out of key. why we bring our supervisors on the floor. whoever needs you know, jump in. >> we have runners, you know, we it's a it's a building with a lot of people working in it. so when we have the scenario, we just bring in a few extra hands to make sure we have all
