news station. this is. news 11. good evening, everybody. thanks for being with us tonight on kron 4 news at 11, i'm grant lotus in east bay community tonight is in mourning their mourning. the loss of a family of 4 killed in a fiery crash last night. >> investigators say the parents and their 2 kids were traveling on foothill road when their electric car somehow crashed into a tree and caught fire. we're still waiting on authorities to identify the 4 people killed. but folks who knew the family have been stopping by the crash site in pleasanton all day and all night paying their

respects. kron 4 sarah stinson reports. >> people continue to drop off flowers here on foothill road where a mom dad and their 2 kids died in a car crash. neighbors of the family say they were headed home from a friend's house when the crash happened. >> it's sad and tragic. >> a community grieving the loss of a family of 4 killed in a car crash wednesday night in pleasanton neighbors, family, friends and co-workers pulled over on foothill road thursday to drop off flowers at the crash site sits very shocking. hassan shaikh says he worked with the dead of the family. great >> father came home worker and a great >> police say the crash happe>ed around 9 at night. it appears the family's electric car hit a pole before striking a tree and bursting into flames. the tree has fresh for marks on it and the road is covered in flame retardant

phone. neighbors of the family say they want police have only released limited information saying they're thoroughly investigating the crash and there's no indication of alcohol or foul play involved with family crash, right where the road emerges from 2 lanes to one people who live nearby say driving on this stretch of road is dangerous like no lights at all. it's really dark. >> and i a lot of people speed here, at least one of the kids who died in the crash was a student in the pleasanton unified school district. the district says it's providing counselors and resources to support those affected. this off all the loss of an entire family >> our our focus is always and how we support. how do we support students and staff and families? the family was driving a vinfast car. >> that's a vietnamese electric car manufacturer. it's only been around a few

years. and i spoke with a family friend off camera. she tells me she wants police to investigate to see if the car malfunctioned. other stopping by say they hope this is a somber reminder to all to be extra careful on the road. i'm sara stinson reporting in pleasanton. back to you. >> thank you, sara. last night's deadly crash happened very close to where a crash in 2019 killed 3 teenagers, including twin brothers. all of them were students at dublin high school. that crash happened on foothill road christmas day. investigators say the car smashed into a power pole and then wrapped around a tree to other teenagers were seriously injured. santa clara county district attorney has filed formal charges against the man accused of attacking the police officer who is protecting san jose's mayor matt mahan. the incident was tuesday as kron. 4 was in the middle of an interview with the mayor. this is in downtown san jose. police say 35 year-old leslie pollard is the

person here punching the plainclothes police officer assigned to protect the mayor. pollard has been charged with felony resisting an officer by means of threat or violence. he's also charged with misdemeanor battery and disturbing the peace. san jose police say pollard also has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence is due to be arraigned in court tomorrow afternoon. 27 year-old mark simon faces attempted kidnapping and child charges in walnut creek. police say they arrested him after responding to a report of an attempted kidnapping of a child at the downtown library on north broadway 2 weeks ago. officers say they also found more than 600 images of child on an electronic device. simon had. simon remains in custody on a 2 million dollar bail. police are asking anyone who may have been victimized to call them. a part of redwood road in castro valley is closed because of a sinkhole. firefighters blocked off the

road north of the red wood canyon golf course in chabot regional park. can see the whole here. they would let our cameraman get any closer. there's no estimate as to when the road may reopen. our weather time here as we get a live look outside at san francisco international where it could be may be a little tough taking off or landing tomorrow morning. kron 4 chief meteorologist lawrence karnow. is here with us in lawrence. we're looking at maybe some >> we have had some few showers moving through tonight. more scattered activity expected throughout the night tonight and least through tomorrow morning through the middle of the day. and then the winds really get going outside tonight, kind of a mixture some clouds in the san francisco. some winds already beginning to kick up and those winds are going to be more of a factor as we head toward tomorrow aftereoon. but the rain, yeah, it is also been falling in parts of the bay area weeks. late season cold front dropping in northern california, bringing some showers here in the bay area. even some lightning strikes in northern california

right now. we're kind of in between. one wave has moved on through, but it did bring some showers early on. you see those dropping on through kind of in a couple swarms moving on by nothing really heavy. but behind that, we've got more of that is going to drop in overnight tonight. keep things going so right now, some partly cloudy skies around the bay area at this moment. but still tracking some showers possibly moving in overnight tonight as a front really begins drop southward overnight and throughout the day tomorrow. now the backside of that system. yeah, we start to clear skies out by tomorrow afternoon, but some very gusty winds, maybe some 30, maybe 40 mile an hour gusts will talk more about that coming up in a few minutes. sounds good. thanks a shoppers in the east bay were stunned today to find out they are losing their walmart. the retail giant announced a store in fremont is closing for good kron four's dan thorn reports. >> for nearly 20 years this walmart, he's served customers on al brace street in fremont next month. it's closing for good. i am very shocked. that

explosion >> with many of so long, this kind fortunate they're closing the store shoppers tell us this has been their go to walmart since it first opened back in 2006. >> a sign at the store's entrance sharing the closing date next month as well as reduced hours. the company says this location is one of several nationwide that have not been making enough. money starts always been very busy. the reason that given again for not having enough revenue to keep the store open, his is is is questionable. a walmart spokesperson tells kron 4 the closure affects more than 150 employees. those workers are being encouraged to transfer to other bay area stores, including one. that's roughly 3 miles away. fremont shoppers will now have to go to the city's osgood road location come next month or travel. even farther to union city or milpitas. it's kind of disappointing a because this punt this place is like the closest to where is. >> the store's new hours are from 07:00am to 07:00pm.

>> and this location officially closes on. may 24th in fremont. dan thorn kron. 4 news. >> we're getting our first glimpse tonight of the berkeley native kidnapped by hamas storing their attack on israel in october. this is 23 year-old hersh goldberg-polin experts say he appears to be forced in this video to speak as he blames the israeli government for neglecting the hostages for 200 days. goldberg-polin is missing his left hand and part of his arm reportedly from hamas grenades that were tossed into a shelter where he was hiding that october day, his parents also recorded a video message once they saw this telling their son to stay strong. >> if you can hear this, we heard your voice today for the first time in 201 days. and if you can hear us, i'm telling we're telling you, we love you. stay strong, survive.

>> it's unclear when exactly the video that hersh's in was made. he has really become one of the most recognizable hostages. there are posters, a fan all over israel. israel believes about 100 hostages remain in captivity. pro-palestinian protests continue to erupt on college campuses across the country today usc announced its main graduation ceremony next month. he's been canceled just a few miles away. ucla students have started to set up a solidarity encampment. this is coming as columbia university's president in new york is warning of tents are not removed by tomor%ow's deadline. the school will consider alternative options to clear the area. students say they will not to spurs until their demands are met. well, you see anybody recognize. i sure do. i know. that's our noelle bellow and seeing this year's junior achievement of northern california's gala tonight.

pacifica looking for this guy after they say he was seen starting a fire at pacific is fairway park april 10th. >> they say the man is visited the archery range at the park several times over the past month. if you've seen him or know him, you're asked to give police a call. the southbound lanes of 6.80, from pleasanton to will be closed again this weekend. as for the ongoing paving and construction project, the roadway will close starting at 9 friday night and reopen at 4 o'clock

winds. got to be prepared for that. maybe as much as 2 to 6 inches of snow above 7,000 feet. yeah, there's a possibility you could see some brief travel delays up there as well. but you got to be prepared for the cold temperatures and those gusty winds outside tonight. lot of clouds around the bay area. scattered showers continuing overnight tonight and tomorrow, too. the high pressure going to take over as we head toward the weekend. but you can see kind of a broken phone system rolling on through right now. we've got another band that is just about to push in the bay area. little dry slot to get the clouds moving through. now, south and a half moon bay. but the heat between that you get some clearing skies more, the clouds will come to the north and that's going to be moving on by and bring with it a chance. some more showers tomorrow. the wind's going to ramp up. i think as we head toward the middle of the day, we'll start to see that especially along the coastline by the afternoon, we start to see some purple showing up in the models. yeah, maybe some 30 40 mile an hour gusts around the bay area. so tomorrow, yeah, could become a blustery afternoon outside the temperatures running well below the average 2 50's and some 60's. i think what's going see things turn around get the weekend will start warm up spring is going make a
