absolutely changing direction completely from yesterday. we've actually got a cold front steering its way from the north and that is going to cool us off a little further tomorrow. results in a bit of a brisk day today. so it's definitely one to keep the jackets close to hand temperatures in the low to mid 50's right now. a cool start to the morning, but very similar to yesterday. temperature wise and temps will remain in the 60's this afternoon. i'll talk more about what to expect as we close out this week. still ahead, rain. all right, john, thank you for that will starting with our san mateo bridge. you've got a traffic hazard there. looks like i'm seeing some reports of some boxes blocking lanes. so maybe a vehicles carrying boxes. it fell off onto the bridge there. drive times, gone up about 30 minutes. hopefully they get those boxes off the bridge to drive jobs could go back down a 13 minute ride on the bay bridge. so things are moving along and we're at 20 minutes last hour, 17 minutes longer, which means summer feel rich, golden gate bridge. you're still at about 40 minutes. he's one of one of the south is a little slow and check in on 80 in the east bay. 40 minutes. crockett down

towards the maze. darya. james, back to you. thank you. rae nato to and let's get to our top story only on kron. a man is in jail after and getting into a fight. >> with a police officer who was protecting the mayor of san jose. and this all happened right in the middle of a kron. 4 interview. >> we have dan kerman now reporting on what happened. >> it's this attack that's led to the arrest of 35 year-old leslie pollard, san jose. police say pollard has been booked for battering a police officer and resisting arrest with violence. the incident was caught by kron 4 cameras during a tuesday evening interview with san jose mayor matt mahan at first in san fernando as steps right next to the mayor. both he and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for the mayor in-form pollard. that interview is under way do it. >> moving talking for mark.

>> pollard uses profanity and tells the officer to mind his own business. what happens next is off camera. it's unclear who touches who first. but pollard is heard saying hall smack you right right now. 9 seconds later, he does just that hitting the officer in the face and head at least twice at that point. a scuffle in season. police are called witnesses say at some point pollard begins yanking on the officer's tie after 2 more minutes and police nowhere in sight. a customer from a nearby business comes to the offices. rescue removing pollard's hands from the officers tie and allowing the officer to handcuff him. police eventually arrived and took pollard into custody. one person who witnessed the confrontation but didn't want to go on camera says he's not even sure that the suspect knew the mayor was even involved in all of this and was definitely clear that the person did not know that the security person protecting the

mayor was actually a san jose police officer. while kron 4 has posted edited version of the video online sent as a police point out in a statement, the video does not contain the entire incident in particular. it does not include the officer identifying himself, nor does it include the many attempts teammate to de-escalate the situation and avoid using force or taking any enforcement action. police confirm pollard has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. the officer hospitalized overnight with head and neck pain. but it's now been released. the case is now under review by the santa clara county district attorney's office. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> 804, is the time and happening today. classes are back to normal at san jose city college after police say they found nothing suspicious on campus. this all came about because of a reported bomb threat shortly after 5 o'clock

last night. this is video of police blocking off more park avenue at bascom again at the time. officers cancel classes. they evacuated. the school, took them about 3 hours to search the area. and the update is they found nothing so classes are back to normal. >> it's 805, and a bill is making its way through the state legislature right now and it would double the fines for protesters who block highways and freeways is gaining a lot of bipartisan support at the state capitol, but not across the state. kron four's. sara stinson explains. >> this bill is proposing to increase fines for protestersn every time they're convicted of blocking traffic on highways. the hope is to deter them from doing it again. but civil rights advocates tell tougher penalties will not stop people from speaking out amid a series of protests related to the israel-hamas war assemblywoman kate sanchez has introduced legislation that would crack down on any demonstrations blocking

traffic on highways in california. so this is because public safety, healthcare risk and honestly. >> i would hate to get to the point where we're losing a lawsuit. one life sanchez says she became frustrated after 78 protesters arrested for blocking the bay bridge in november. >> we're only ordered to 5 hours of community service and $57 fines under current state law. protesters can be fined anywhere between 100 to $500. >> sanchez wants to double those fines up to $1000 depending on past convictions because we've seen of these laws on the books are are not enough right there tie the chart. what's happening now? >> we believe in doubling that would give them our tools in their tool box. this bill passed a transportation committee hearing by both democrats and republicans. the california highway patrol association also in favor saying these protests prevent first responders from doing their job. this is dangerous. something needs to change. >> the executive director of

the council on american islamic relations is on robbie lou is speaking out against the bill. frankly, i'm appalled that our legislators are using the pretense of transportation and public safety. >> to quell. first amendment protected activity, the loose as if this bill gets passed into law. it won't stop protesters. the only way to deter protesters. urgent implement a permanent cease-fire. >> assemblywoman sanchez says she's hopeful her bill makes its way to the governor's desk. it next goes to an appropriations committee. i'm sara stinson reporting the studio. back to you. >> thank you, sir. okay to the breaking news this morning. the new york appeals court has overturned. harvey weinstein twenty-twenty rape conviction and it ordered now a new trial in that landmark. me too case. the court found the judge prejudice harvey with improper rulings like letting women testify about allegations that weren't part of the case.

weinstein has been serving a 23 year sentence in new york following his conviction on charges of forcibly performing a act in 2006 and then rape in 2013, he will remain in prison, however, because he was also convicted in los angeles in 2022 of another rape and was sentenced to 16 years for that. we'll keep you updated as we learn more about his new trial in new york. 808, right now. and as we look live here at sfo, a look. there's some planes coming in taking off. >> you know what it's like when you miss a connection because your plane is delayed or they cancel it. >> right now there's or to and, you know, get your money back. a lot of times you get a credit voucher. they're going to change making it easier for you to get your money back in the form of an actual refund. we have kron four's will tran standing by at the airport to explain that. >> and more in these new rule changes. well. here's what you need to know. it will not protect you during summer travel when so many families, of course. >> take to the skies for

vacation is not going protect you but come the holidays thanksgiving christmas. it will be in place. so if you're delayed during that particular time, expect a refund, if that's exactly what you want, no questions asked. this is the biggest sweeping change and u.s. transportation airline history and it goes into effect after so many people have complained to the government that it is so difficult to get a refund. so here are the qualifications you have to be delayed 3 hours or more domestically for an international flight 6 hours or more, but it doesn't stop there. if your bags are delayed after you land more than 12 hours, no questions asked you to. we'll get a refund for that. and that includes taxes. got a chance to talk to travelers this morning. they, of course, are on board with it. scramble to find other airlines flights to

get on and then have to pay for that and not get refunded because you chose not to take that flight. so, yeah, it's been frustrating. >> airlines, they're saying that they're not crazy about this, but they were always offering refunds big. did you know about i didn't know that they're offering refunds. i just got a free credit on a flight that was delayed to our east recently. but i didn't know i can get a refund for the ticket. no vouchers, because those vouchers or credits, actually, it saves the airlines money and it keeps the money where it is because you come right back. >> and spend it there with the refunds. you can take that money and book another flight on another airline that possibly can take you. there are a lot quicker, according to transportation secretary pete buttigieg. he says sometimes airlines would do this. you are delayed and there was no guidelines, no set time of 3 or 6 hours. so you would go to the counter and buy another ticket and

out of most of the moisture from this. but as you see right here, northern california, the sierra and even the central valley, we'll see some rainfall as we make our way into tonight. and tomorrow, timing of all of this. there's your showers in the pacific northwest. tonight. we may see a few sprinkles in the bay rainfall, light rainfall, but kicking into gear up in the sierra in tomorrow, we may even see some thunderstorm activity for the central valley. southern california. and this year itself on the bay area literally gets this. a trace of moisture, maybe a sprinkle or 2. so we're kind of missing out on this one. as for the sierra one last dose of snowfall potentially anyways, just a couple of inches in a really just that those highest elevations at lake level at tahoe, it's likely going to be rainfall. temperatures today are going to be in the upper 50's at the coast and then a lot of 60's elsewhere. pretty pleasant feeling day. the nice thing about today compared to yesterday, much less of a muggy feel to it. so less humid, the calm to today is it's going to be a bit

security turnstile. they say the turnstile failed just before the 9.11 remembrance. and now he's suing the city to get his job back. kron four's ken wayne has the story. >> put on the list with felons and and murder. and it's the same list, ok for tsa culture. spurlock doesn't want to show his face on camera because he's concerned it could be blacklisted by airlines because his airport security badge has been revoked on september 9th 2021, just 2 days before the 20th anniversary of the 9.11 attacks, the alaska airlines aviation mechanic was stopped at the employees, security turnstile, one trying to go to work at sfo. >> he used his biometrics security badge to pass through, but it didn't work on. his first attempt started through and then the turnstile froze up and locked up. >> so came back. i tried it again. i use my bad jen fingerprint like exposed to it gave me the green light now on through. and that was the violation. they said that we

had spurlock says he was accused of trying to circumvent security by trying to go through again after the turnstile froze. so what they did is they pulled my badge, astounds me from working at basically every airport that you need. a side of stands for security identification display area. the san francisco city attorney's office responded by saying spurlock, quote. >> tampered with the secured access point which violated airport rules. the airport had previously warned employees that this type of conduct posed an unacceptable security threat, ensuring the safety and security of the airport is paramount. the decision to revoke their security badges is clearly warranted. and within the airports, discretion, the airport followed all necessary procedures. we look forward to discussing this matter. further in court emotionally, it's just been a roller coasters. the coalition used overwhelming air power to defeat a brutal dictator. >> and free a nation spurlock has been an aviation mechanic ever since his service in the air force during the first gulf war working on military

aircraft. >> and holding a top secret clearance. by all accounts, he has an unblemished record and 20 years of work with the airline. not at any point was security jeopardize into the end of the day. the entire incident was a function of the faulty turnstile, which is the responsibility the airport to maintain alaska airlines and the mechanics union have tried to resolve the situation to no avail. we had our attorneys write letters airport commission. it was just a complete storm. all the timing couldn't have been worse for spurlock. i just had a baby and i was going to start my baby bonding leave 2 weeks after this happened, the has since found aviation work. but earning less than before. i was also eligible the right tire for alaska. 55, i just turned 55. so i wasn't able to retire. but i lost my health insurance. they basically took everything spurlock and his union say they think sfo and the tsa overreacted. i don't

>> it's a 25 and for your health, the health care cost increases are going to be capped at 3% under a new california rule. the healthcare affordability board. it's a new state agency just approved this limit. health care costs went up nearly 5 and a half percent every year for the past 2 decades. but people's incomes have increased only 3% a year over that same time, the 3% limit on healthcare costs is going to be phased in over 5 years starting next year. >> in the east bay protests calling for a ceasefire in gaza are growing on the campus of uc berkeley. demonstrators have created a tent city in front of sproul hall. all in solidarity with other universities across the country. now, so far, the camp there, uc berkeley has grown to about 70 tents. participants say they're going continue protesting until their demands are met, which includes having the university called for a ceasefire in gaza and then having the university

stop any financial support to israel if there is any uc berkeley says as of right now, this encampment is not disrupting campus operations, but they add that the safety of all students continues to be their top priority. teens in san francisco want to lower the voting age to 16 youth activist un barker plumber is gaining support among community leaders to back another attempt to pass a measure that would grant 16 year-olds in san francisco, the right to vote in local elections. parker plummer says this would help increase engagement overall in local elections. this is actually a 3rd attempt to do lowering the voting age. it failed once in 2016 and then once again in 2020 by a small margin, maybe this time we'll get through. we'll see. >> it's 8.26. and coming up on the kron 4 morning news next. a proposed project in oakland has some businesses nervous about losing customers will tell you what it entails.

gate bridge is 37 down to the tolls. is back to you. thanks a lot, 31 and the big story that we're following the east bay. 35 death penalty cases in alameda county. >> are being reviewed because of allegations of racism in the justice system. kron four's terisa sauce here. talk with a legal expert who says this could have. >> huge ripple effects. >> maybe what happened here is that these people were deemed to be opposed to the death penalty. and that's how they got away with removing people based on that city on wednesday, legal experts weighing in on the bombshell dropped by alameda county district attorney pamela price. >> that a federal judge has ordered the review of 35 death penalty cases after these scribbled notes were discovered while examining an appeal for this man, ernest, a 51 year-old was convicted and put on death row for the 1995 killing of 9 year-old lance clark and attempted murder of his grandmother. price says that the notes suggest prosecutors may have blocked

female black and jewish potential jurors from serving on trials. from is a criminal law professor at uc law. san francisco. >> this is probably just the tip of the iceberg. because there were a lot of bats and shenanigans going until california tightened its laws and what could happen next is not only could these death verdicts be set aside, but the entire case could be set aside. and some of these individuals may be given a new trial in its entirety. >> stephen clark is a former santa clara prosecutor and now defense attorney and legal analyst. while the death penalty cases are under the microscope, both a legal analysts say that there has been sweeping changes in the past couple of decades, making jury selection more transparent. there's been a tremendous evolution and how jury selection is you have to have a legitimate reason for removing a juror. >> and you have to articulate that reason to the court. if

asked. >> so we are no suspicious of removals of people on the basis not just of race or gender, but a bunch of other categories like religion, nationality. you know, a lot of other things. and moreover, when the prosecution has to provide a reason, it can't be a silly reason. it has to be a reason that stands like that. that makes some common sense. >> but legal experts say that it could take years before the truth is revealed on whether or not there was misconduct conducted in these death penalty cases in alameda county in the newsroom to recess stasio kron. 4 news. >> 33 is the time and the long anticipated documentary on the alexis gabe murder case has finally aired. that at the time. 23 year-old woman was from oakley and went missing in january of 2022, her partial remains were found near sacramento months later, gabe's family and friends and members of the community gathered at sabrina pizzeria in oakley to watch the documentary together for the first time last night. the

gabe family has been pushing hard for that documentary to be released, hoping that it would change public perception about the case and possibly lead to charges against the mother of a lexus is ex-boyfriend. marshall jones jones was the primary suspect in the case, but he died in a police standoff later on. and after watching the documentary, alexis, his parents say they were actually disappointed with the final product. they said it was missing some key pieces, including video of the suspects. mother. >> video is really important expecting to everyone to see. to the police report something like he said something like was cold but it's not. with h and especially the inside of the house speak. what they do

to us. that instead specialty so >> in a statement to kron 4, the contra costa county district attorney's office said, quote, based on the evidence we have been provided by the investigating agencies, there is no indication that anyone other than marshall jones was directly involved in the murder of alexis gabe, either as a direct perpetrator or an aider and abettor end quote. now the gabe family says they still intend to file a lawsuit against jones's mother. happening tomorrow in the east bay memorial service for fallen oakland police officer jordan wingate is set to be held. he died saturday from injuries he sustained back in 2018 car crash while on duty. the service is set to be held at 3 cross church in castro valley at 11:00am. it

is open to the public >> don't have an update now on the stolen wedding dress. remember, we saw porch pirates steal this dress and a box in redwood city on the deck there. well, police have been led to a suspect. first, we have the video of this which happened on april. 11th and then after getting multiple tips from the community, police arrested 65 year-old henry, fun se. cupp. and the dress they recovered. and it's back with the bride. hopefully in time of the wedding in the north bay police arrested a person who was in a stolen car and had a gun and tried to ram police with the car as he was trying to take off. and here's the vehicle. it gone monday. police noticed this car with a shattered sunroof in a parking lot near tennessee street. and so they called it in and checked and it was a stolen out of richmond. so they attempted to pull the driver over. he tried to take off by ramming a patrol vehicle 6

times and then crashed the car into a wall and eventually he was apprehended. you can see what police found. they found a loaded firearm with no serial number in the back seat. he's been arrested on multiple felony counts. >> in the east bay, oakland, small business owners are concerned about of road project. yeah, the deal is is what remove a bunch of parking spaces along grand avenue and they're concerned people will be able to get to them. kron four's. dan thorn has more. >> grand avenue in oakland is a busy corridor. cars parked in front of small businesses as cyclists make their way through the traffic ok'd on is proposing to improve safety along this road. but that includes getting rid of dozens of those parking spaces. our concern is that if they take away. >> easy access to our businesses. it's going to be a lot harder for our customers. able to get to veterinarian elizabeth mcdonald says the proposed removal of 30 to 40

parking spots would make life difficult for her clients, especially those who are elderly and with pets that need extra care. her business, the grand lake better an area hospital and the grand avenue business association have been asking for input to share with oak dot. we unfortunately really haven't been able to get very much input to them. >> they have not really come down and not talk to the merchants on the streets. so we got permission if we collected input. >> that we could at least presented to counts as grand avenue from broadway to macarthur needs to be repaved to cut down on a high number of bicycle and pedestrian accidents. >> the proposed improvements include new crosswalks protected bike lanes and turning angled parking spaces into parallel parking mcdonald's says she and other business owners all for safety. but a more balanced approach needs to be taken. she thinks losing the parking spaces might be a death blow to already struggling merchan's. we'd rather they slow down traffic. >> maybe have their be less

negative impacts from humans. they are. ian, according to that report from the marine mammal center, the most common type of disturbance over the last couple years has been people. >> crowding the animals not giving him enough space, trying to get close, trying to get a selfie trying. i know when you're doing it because you think they're cute. you love them, but it can really stress them out. >> and it can see pops to be separated. the line pups from their moms, which is terrible and also could disrupt rescue operations, too. don't forget. >> but specifically talking about the bay area. remember, disturbance is a year-round problem. we had 30% of our marine mammals last year experience some form a disturbance before these rescues occurred. we're seeing the disturbances are just as high in the summer and fall months is they are during our busy season on site here in sausalito that's tied with pupping season. well, researchers want to remind everybody, hugh, don't touch the animals. i know their cue. don't pick them up. >> even if you think of

lot it's and david de pap the man convicted of attacking paul pelosi in san francisco. >> will be sentenced in another month. now the sentencing hearing has been pushed back to may 17th. he faces a maximum of 50 years in prison for attacking nancy pelosi's husband, paul with a hammer back in october of 2022, a proposal to put new cars with speed safety devices is moving forward in sacramento state senator scott wiener as introduced this street safety bill that would mandate all new cars made or sold. told a california come with technology to monitor their speed. and it would also require caltrans to design and fix the roads for pedestrians. cyclists and drivers. wiener says the goal is to make the streets safer for everyone. >> well, 49, let's talk barry baseball. the giants were hoping to sweep the mets in their 3rd game of the series. sports director jason dumas has the highlights.

tonight. let's talk a little more about that because one of the big story lines we're following is the fact that forty-niners legends jerry rice. >> and frank gore both have sons that are waiting to hear their names called. we'll see if that happens. this draft has a lot of college players with nfl bloodlines. but let's start with jerry rice's son brendan, a wide receiver at a pretty great season with usc. >> he'll probably make them a mid-round choice. and then here you have frank gore junior. he played at southern miss. he's a running back like his dad. he's projected to be a later round picks. there's a litany of other names to ed mccaffrey. sunless is coming off a pretty good season at rice. course, we know other christian become a powerhouse for the forty-niners and perhaps the biggest legacy name in the draft. >> is marvin harrison junior receiver like his famous dad and the younger harrison is likely to go in the top 5. that's the odds on favorite to happen. and with all this prime nfl dna up for grabs, forty-niners general manager john lynch says he is pretty excited by it all.
