not normal. not seen any reports of any accidents or hazard could be something new popping up there. but things are slow. nearly 30 minutes on the richmond, sandra fell bridge golden gate bridge still around. 21, 37 to the tolls are ages. back to you. thank you. reyna 701. and our top story. a man is in jail after fighting. >> with a police officer who was protecting the mayor of san jose. this all happened in the middle of an interview with kron 4. in fact, our own dan kerman reports on what that man's arrest has uncovered. >> it's this attack that's led to the arrest of 35 year-old leslie pollard, san jose. police say pollard has been booked for battering a police officer and resisting arrest with violence. the incident was caught by kron 4 cameras during a tuesday evening interview with san jose mayor matt mahan at first in san fernando as steps right next to the mayor. both he and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for the mayor in-form pollard. but

an interview is under way do it. >> we're moving talking for mark. >> pollard uses profanity and tells the officer to mind his own business. what happens next is off camera. it's unclear who touches who first. but pollard is heard saying all smack you right right now 9 seconds later, he does just that hitting the officer in the face and head at least twice at that point. a scuffle sight. a customer from a nearby business comes to the offices. rescue removing pollard's hands from the officers tie and allowing the officer to handcuff him. police eventually arrived and took pollard into custody. one person who witnessed the

confrontation but didn't want to go on camera says he's not even sure that the suspect knew the mayor was even involved in all of this and was definitely clear that the person did not know that the security person protecting the mayor was actually a san jose police officer. while kron 4 has posted edited version of the video online sent as a police point out in a statement, the video does not contain the entire incident in particular. it does not include the officer identifying himself, nor does it include the many attempts teammate to de-escalate the situation and avoid using force or taking any enforcement action. police confirm pollard has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. the officer hospitalized overnight with head and neck pain. but it's now been released. the case is now under review by the santa clara county district attorney's office. dan kerman kron. 4 news. 74 is the time and happening today.

classes will resume as normal at san jose city college after police say they found nothing suspicious on campus. >> this was all after somebody reported a possible bomb threat shortly after 5 o'clock last night. this is video police blocking moore park avenue at bascom. again. police canceled classes and evacuated the school while they conducted. that search took about 3 hours. but they reopen the campus again after finding nothing. wilson county sheriff's office is asking the public to share any information they might have about the victim of a cold case dating all the way back to the 80's. this is a picture of jeffrey thomas reopen. now. police say his skull was found in 2001 and turned into the sheriff's office in santa rosa. investigators categorized as a homicide case, but they say it took investigators more than 20 years to finally identify ruben now that they have an identity sheriff's office is asking for anybody with information to come forward, they think is from the east coast. he was rumored to have worked as a house painter here in california. any more information about him. please

contact investigators. a bill is making its way through the state legislature right now and it aims to double the fines. >> for protesters who block highways and freeways as we have seen happen so many times now recently in the bay area. this was most recent protests have blocked the golden gate bridge for hours. and we also saw a blockage of 80 in oakland for hours recently. california has seen more and more of these protests happening in recent months because of the war between israel and hamas under current state law. these protesters face fines of 100 to $500. but this bill, would try to deter this by adding and increasing the fines up to $1000 depending on past convictions. >> because we see that these laws on the books are are not enough, right? there's a good time to turn to what's happening now. we believe in doubling that would give them our tools in their tool box to

go those that are continually putting others lives at risk. keeping parents from dropping off their children's school. things like that. >> the california highway patrol is in favor of this. they say that these protests prevent first responders from doing their jobs. the executive director of the council on american islamic relations is against it. however, saying that they think this is a pretense of using a public safety to actually quell first amendment rights. time now is 706. let's take a look at sfo because air travel could change big time. become much more passenger friendly. and yeah, we've got a few tweaks coming your way. one would get rid of hidden fees. the other would make it a whole lot easier to get a refund. yeah, both cancellations. >> and delayed flights to and without the rigmarole, you have to jump through a lot of hoops. now everybody has a different policy. kron four's will. tran is live at sfo to talk more about these changes. good morning. well, so the refunds will be automatic. a

lot of people they did not know that you are entitled to a refund, but you have to fight for it. >> now you will get a refund. no more vouchers. those vouchers, the airlines get out actually end of saving them money. now, if your flight, how do you qualify for a refund? if your flight? it's more than 3 hours delayed domestically or 6 hours internationally. and of course, if it's canceled outright, you get a refund. so 3, 6, hours, those of the windows that you are looking at, you don't even have to call the airlines. they know that they relate and they will issue you a refund. >> this is biggest change as far as passenger rights when it comes to transportation, airline transportation. >> in u.s. history and pete buttigieg, secretary of transportation, buttigieg, was very happy to announce that he says this should save travelers about 500 million dollars every year. there are other things the airlines need

should be done by 2040. and you know what else? they're working on a whole new look for san francisco stonestown shopping center right now. it looks like a mall, but this is what brookfield properties wants to do with it. they have these renderings showing a project that has a town center and affordable housing neighborhood, open spaces and retail. they have been thinking about this. it's been years 4 years just in the making of the idea. and a man who lives near stonestown says it's really hard to imagine this transformation. >> pretty surprised that they're they're going to do because it's been like that for, you know, as long as i can remember since the 70's, it's a good area. and it's it's a great place to be. you know, they got libraries here and, >> you know, schools and think people get educated >> it's a great place. san francisco planning commission has been gathering public input on the project since last year. and the project still requires approval from the planning commission and the board of supervisors. >> we have breaking news this

morning. a new york appeals court has overturned. harvey weinstein twewty-twenty rape conviction and ordered a new trial. now in that landmark me too case, the court found the judge prejudiced harvey with improper rulings, including letting women testify about allegations that we're part of the case. weinstein has been serving a 23 year sentence in new york following his conviction on charges of forcibly performing a act in 2006 and rape. in 2013, he will remain in prison, however, because he was also convicted in los angeles in 2022 of another rape and was sentenced to 16 years in prison. there. we'll update you when we learn more about his new trial in new york. we'll take a break. a 7.11, but still ahead on the kron, 4 morning news. nearly 3 dozen death penalty cases in alameda county are now in limbo because of potential misconduct. >> we'll have the latest from legal experts on that. plus, college students across the nation are protesting the war in cars, including right here in the bay area. how uc berkeley is responding. and we

>> 7.14, right now and we're checking out the weather for a little breezy. i don't know. it's going to be as humid now a lot of people mentioned it to me when we were working out. those certainly was a palpable. john, we could feel it in the yeah, muggy out there. i didn't necessarily love it. but today is not going to feel as muggy. >> little bit of cloud cover definitely still hanging out with us. although a peek of sunshine above san jose right here. love to see that those little peeks of sunshine

today. a sign of a little bit of a switch up in this forecast. that first low pressure area that brought us the southerly breeze in the muggy feel yesterday is on the outs and some cooler air. the cold front drape directly to our north and along that frontal boundary little bit of shower activity offshore of northern california. that next low swings through overnight tonight into tomorrow results in an increase in wind speeds. so a brisk wind, especially kicking into gear later on today into tomorrow. and along with this cold front, a few showers mostly up north on the north coast, the sierra, nevada and a thunderstorm or 2 in the central valley. the storm track can go a little bit further inland. that means those of us in the bay area a bit too far westward to achieve much precipitation from this. maybe just a drop of water to for most areas this year. we'll get a few more inches of snowfall. this is likely going to be above lake level at lake tahoe enough to be seeing a couple inches around donner summit as well as eco past temperatures today. very familiar

are a good morning. saint vincent has a new low-cost delivery option for groceries. it's for prime members. >> and also customers that use government-sponsored ebt cards. prime members will have to pay 9.99 a month for the subscription. what customers using the ebt card will have to pay for 99. that includes deliveries from whole foods, which, of course, is owned by amazon, as well as rite aid and some other retailers. the biden administration slept airlines with new rules that trigger instant refunds when flights are canceled, they're also clamping down on surprise junk fees under the new department of transportation rules. airlines must issue a full cash refund automatically if a flight is canceled rather than making the customer, ask for it, they'll also be some kind of reimbursement baggage is significantly delayed. and though reimburse of if those implied amenities like wi-fi for which you paid have not been able to be used. cnbc reports of disclosure ricard requirement could save consumers a half billion dollars a year and unexpected fees and apple is reportedly

be reimbursed for services that weren't actually rendered. a warrant was served tuesday night was arrested on suspicion of grand theft and forgery. san jose unified school district says they're working closely with this investigation. >> well, in the east bay protests calling for a ceasefire in gaza are growing on the campus of uc berkeley. demonstrators created a tent city in front of sproul hall in solidarity with other universities across the country. we actually have video of what they've done so far here. as you can see, they have about 70 tense on campus. participants say they'll continue protesting until their demands are met, which includes that the university called for a ceasefire in gaza and stop any and all financial support of israel. if there is any uc berkeley spokesperson says that school officials are monitoring the situation. he says as it stands, the free palestine camp is not disrupting campus operations. >> it comes to nonviolent political protest. the campuses are not to use law

enforcement unless it is absolutely necessary. to prevent bodily damage or threat to anyone's life. we're not at that point. >> uc berkeley officials say the safety of all students continues to be there top priority. so we'll keep you updated as this continues to evolve. >> time now 7.21 and governor gavin newsom is asking lawmakers to pass a bill that would allow arizona doctors to come to california and perform abortion services currently, arizona has a law that allows abortions in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy. but the state supreme court in arizona ruled that the state should follow a law from 18, 64 that bans nearly all abortions except when the woman's life is in danger. doctors who have been violating this law could face a penalty of 2 to 5 years in state prison in arizona.

>> the port oakland is busy and getting busier. they're getting a record number of containers coming in last month. nearly 203,020 foot containers pass through the port of oakland facilities. that marks a 19.1% increase compared to march of last year. full imports at the oakland seaport also continue to rise for the 5th month in a row. a 38% increase full exports also grew of the 4 month in the road for that nearly 15% up for the exports.

to you. thanks a lot. reyna 7.32, the big story that we're following the east bay. 35 death penalty cases in alameda county are being reviewed because of allegations of racism in the justice system got kron four's terisa sauce. you're talking with legal experts now who say these allegations could have huge impacts. >> maybe what happened here is that these people were deemed to be opposed to the death penalty. and that's how they got away with removing people based on that city on wednesday, legal experts weighing in on the bombshell dropped by alameda county district attorney pamela price. >> that a federal judge has ordered the review of 35 death penalty cases after these scribbled notes were discovered while examining an appeal for this man, ernest, a 51 year-old was convicted and put on death row for the 1995 killing of 9 year-old lance clark and attempted murder of his grandmother. price says that the notes suggest prosecutors may have blocked female black and jewish potential jurors from serving

on trials. brown is a criminal law professor at uc law. san francisco. >> this is probably just the tip of the iceberg. because there were a lot of bats and shenanigans going until california tightened its laws and what could happen next is not only could these death verdicts be set aside, but the entire case could be set aside. and some of these individuals may be given a new trial in its entirety. >> stephen clark is a former santa clara prosecutor and now defense attorney and legal analyst. while the death penalty cases are under the microscope, both a legal analysts say that there has been sweeping changes in the past couple of decades, making jury selection more transparent. there's been a tremendous evolution and how jury selection is you have to have a legitimate reason for removing a juror. >> and you have to articulate that reason to the court. if asked. >> so we are no suspicious of removals of people on the

basis not just of race or gender, but a bunch of other categories like religion, nationality. you know, a lot of other things. and moreover, when the prosecution has to provide a reason, it can't be a silly reason. it has to be a reason that stands like that. that makes some common sense. >> but legal experts say that it could take years before the truth is revealed on whether or not there was misconduct conducted in these death penalty cases in alameda county in the newsroom to recess stasio kron. 4 news. >> well, the long anticipated documentary on the alexis gabe murder case has finally aired. the 23 year-old woman at the time from locally went missing back in january of 2022. well, her partial remains were found near sacramento months later. and gabe's family, her friends and the community came together at to bring his pizzeria in oakley to watch the documentary together last night as it aired for the first time. now, the gabe family has been pushing hard for this documentary be released, hoping that it would change public perception about

the case and possibly lead to charges against the mother of a lexus is ex-boyfriend. marshall jones. he was the primary suspect in the case when he died when he was shot by police in a standoff after watching the documentary, alexis, his parents say they were actually disappointed that the final product was missing. what they felt were key pieces, including a video of the suspects. mother. >> that video. so expecting to everyone to see. to the police report said something like go. he said something like was cold the idea not but it's not going with h and especially the inside of the house people. do to us? in. so

especially so >> in a statement kron 4, the contra costa county district attorney's office said, quote, based on the evidence we've been provided by the investigating agencies, there is no indication anyone other than marshall jones was directly involved in the murder of alexis. gabe, either as a direct perpetrator or an aider and abettor end quote. now the family still intends to have their attorney file. a lawsuit against the mother after the documentary airs. >> time now 7.36 and the north bay police have arrested a person for having a stolen gun or a gun without a serial marks on it, a stolen car and for ramming a police officer trying to get away. officers noticed on monday there was a car with a shattered sunroof in and drove into a parking lot of a business near

tennessee street. they did a record check in. they found that car was stolen out of richmond. they attempted to pull the car over the driver, rammed the patrol vehicle 6 times trying to flee and then crashed into a well ended up surrendering in police search. the vehicle could see what they found. a loaded firearm without a serial number that was in the backseat. and they arrested the driver on multiple felonies. >> happening tomorrow in the east bay, a memorial service for fallen oakland police officer jordan wingate is set to be held. he died saturday from injuries. he suffered back in 2018. it was a car crash while on duty. the service is set to be held at 3 crosses church in castro valley set to begin at 11:00am and it is open to the public. the city of san francisco is hoping to improve 9-1-1, response times by opening a new emergency dispatch center. the new facility was unveiled yesterday on the second floor of the old 9-1-1, center on turk street. our cameras were there as they gave us a tour.

it features 55 brand-new workstations. they've got an updated break room and elevated supervisor area and a new training room as well. >> and it prepares us for the future by increasing our capacity and our ability to add more dispatchers and create the kind of environment that's going to be a better environment for the people who are answering the most challenging calls in san francisco. >> the city is also ramping up efforts to recruit up to 30 new dispatchers. and they're hoping that this new facility will attract more applicants. >> in the east bay, oakland, small business owners are concerned about a project that would remove dozens of parking spaces along grand avenue. kron four's dan thorn has more. >> grand avenue in oakland is a busy corridor. cars parked in front of small businesses as cyclists make their way through the traffic ok'd on is proposing to improve safety along this road. but that includes getting rid of dozens of those parking spaces. our concern is that if they take

recently released data shows more marine mammals like the sea lions. >> at pier, 39 are having more negative interactions with humans. yeah. so according to a report from the marine mammal center of the most common type of disturbance reported over the last 2 years was people crowding around animals. >> trying to get selfies, trying to get close, not giving them the space they and researchers say that can lead to an increase in the stress level in the animals pops can be separated from their moms. and we don't want that and it can disrupt rescue operation. >> but specifically talking about the bay area. remember, disturbance is a year-round problem. we had 30% of our marine mammals last year experience some form a disturbance before these rescues occurred. we're seeing the disturbances are just as high in the summer and fall months is they are during our
