>> from the bay area's local news station. you're watching kron. 4 news at 6. >> now at 6 protests growing bigger on uc berkeley's campus now calling for a cease-fire in gaza. good evening. thanks for joining us here in companies at 6. i'm noelle bellow. i'm ken wayne. demonstrators made a tent city in front of sproul hall. >> it's in solidarity with other universities protesting across the country. meanwhile, some jewish students kron 4 they don't feel safe on campus. on for us. rob nesbitt has the story. >> it's now day 3 of the free palestine camp on the uc berkeley campus. i spoke with one of the participants, yaz and cash who told me the camp

has grown to about 70 tents. as you might imagine, all kind of. >> making sure. >> what we're working on on campus is moving. so a lot of us that deadlines we're chasing. so people are balancing those things. he says the protests will continue until certain demands are met. >> including the university calling for a cease-fire in gaza and the stopping of any financial support to israel putting him anyway, not that's the second event testing from all university funds and the partnerships that kind of promote. this carnage. similar protests have been held at other universities, including columbia, yale and nyu. >> all of those protests resulted in arrests. uc berkeley spokesperson dan mogulof says the free palestine camp has yet to disrupt campus operations and it comes to nonviolent political protest. the campuses are not to use law enforcement. >> unless it is absolutely necessary. to prevent bodily damage or threat to anyone's

life. we're not at that point. >> members of uc berkeley's jewish student union say they don't feel safe on campus. this is video from a free palestine protest in february that ended an event featuring israeli speaker sophomore sharon cattlemen described to kron 4. what she's experienced for the last 3 months. >> they've mob some of us. they've surrounded some of us. they've had. i had them take random pictures and videos of me for no reason when i'm walking past the gate because they know my involvement in my community. uc berkeley says the safety of all students continues to be its top priority. >> in berkeley, rob nesbitt kron, 4 news. >> a bay area man was found dead after falling while on a hike in oregon. it happened sunday on the coastal trail near natural bridges. that's about 20 miles across from the california border. another hiker reported seeing a body in the rocks below the trail. rescue crews repelled 300 feet down to the victim to retrieve

his body. the victim was later identified as richard ehrhart from san jose. >> a man is in jail tonight. accused of assaulting a plain clothes. san jose police officer who was providing security for the mayor. kron. 4 cameras caught most of the incident happened yesterday as one of our reporters was interviewing mayor matt mahan in downtown san jose. our kron four's dan kerman has the latest. >> it's this attack that's led to the arrest of 35 year-old leslie pollard, san jose. police say pollard has been booked for battering a police officer and resisting arrest with violence. the incident was caught by kron 4 cameras during a tuesday evening interview with san jose mayor matt mahan at first in san fernando as steps right next to the mayor. both he and the plainclothes san jose police officer providing security for the mayor in-form pollard. that interview is under way do

it. >> moving talking for mark. >> pollard uses profanity and tells the officer to mind his own business. what happens next is off camera. it's unclear who touches who first. but pollard is heard saying how smack you right right now 9 seconds later, he does just that hitting the officer in the face and head at least twice at that point. a scuffle in season. police are called witnesses say at some point pollard begins shaking and the officers tie after 2 more minutes and police nowhere in sight. a customer from a nearby business comes to the offices. rescue removing pollard's hands from the officers tie and allowing the officer to handcuff him. police eventually arrived and took pollard into custody. one person who witnessed the confrontation but didn't want

to go on camera says he's not even sure that the suspect knew the mayor was even involved in all of this and was definitely clear that the person did not know that the security person protecting the mayor was actually a san jose police officer. well, kron 4 has posted edited version of the video online sent as a police point out. in a statement, the video does not contain the entire incident in particular. it does not include the officer identifying himself, nor does it include the many attempts teammate to de-escalate the situation and avoid using force or taking any enforcement action. police confirm pollard has an outstanding arrest warrant out of georgia for resisting arrest with violence. the officer was hospitalized overnight with head and neck pain. but it's now been released. the case is now under review by the santa clara county district attorney's office. dan kerman kron. 4 news. >> that schedule check of your 4 zone forecast. taking a live

look outside right now. my goodness. lots of cloud cover this evening. or as a kind of looks like a volcano went off about disappearing in that cloud cover out there right now. i think the cloud cover is going lower a bit overnight tonight as high pressure. >> starts to strengthen up above. but regardless, we're still going to see a lot of fog again, starting out your day early tomorrow. that cloud cover really just kind of slow to break up a lot of parts of bay area. never entirely seeing any at all today. so that we had today, another round of some cooler weather around the bay are the temperatures went from well above average to well below average. now the kind of hovering in the 60's around most of the bay area. now even had reports of some patchy drizzle again, especially near the coastline this morning. and we may see a little bit more of that overnight tonight said low pressure just kind of swirling off the coastline. that's just enough to deepen that marine laron help to move all the way the interior valleys overnight and all the way the central valley matter of fact. but that area of low pressure going start to sag a little further to the south and does does we're going to see a high pressure start to

build in behind that wind direction starts which just a little bit too. so i think all told tomorrow going to see a little more sunshine least inland tomorrow. >> if you're headed out the door this evening, grab a light jacket. those temperatures staying cool numbers in the 50's. maybe a little drizzle as we head toward midnight. >> lauren, thank you. we are learning more about the project to transform san francisco's stonestown galleria into housing and more kron four's. gayle ong joins us in studio now with new renderings of the planned sale. >> yes, no, here they are. so the goal is to a transform this retail center into a town center building what they call a mixed use neighborhood that will be adding more shops apartment homes around the existing mall on their parking lots of they don't use people. i spoke with, though, had mixed views about the project. >> the stones town revitalization project has been 4 years in the making with the community and the city of san francisco. that's according to brookfield properties. the company behind the proposal, the company declined an interview with

kron 4 but shared these renderings of the project that include plans for a civic town center, affordable housing neighborhood, open spaces and retail. it would be good for the businesses and for the whole community. something new josef martinez live near stonestown galleria for decades after hearing about new plans to transform part of the area into new homes. pretty surprised that they're they're going to do because it's been like that for, you know, as long as i can remember since the 70's, it's a good area. and it's it's a great place to be. you know, they got libraries here and, >> you know, schools and things will get educated it's a great place. >> no, a good idea. i i object that but this woman who worked at the shopping center says the neighborhood has enough already. >> we need we need them all. you know, mean. >> builders are just building building and building. houses. what? we don't need the san francisco planning commission has been gathering public input since last year.

>> in a series of social media post, mayor london breed wrote the project will create a vibrant town center saying in part, quote, 3500 new homes, including housing for seniors, students and families, 6 acres of publicly accessible parks. plazas new jobs in both construction and permanently on site onsite childcare to support families, funding for funding to make muni more efficient. >> and the project is still under the approval has still needs to be approved by the planning commission and board of supervisors. i did reach out to city officials. here. it's going have not yet heard back. but we will be following this big mega project, kind of our waste a lot that they're offering up and wanting wanting to do with a all right. we'll stay tuned. thank you, gayle. >> city of san francisco's hoping to improve response times by opening a new emergency dispatch center. the new facility was unveiled this morning on the second floor of the old 9-1-1, center on turk

street. it features 55 brand-new work stations and updated breakroom, an elevated supervisor area and a new training room. >> as for the future, by increasing our capacity and our ability to add more dispatchers and create the kind of environment that's going to be a better environment for the people who are answering the most challenging calls. and san francisco. >> the city is also ramping up efforts to recruit up to 30 new dispatchers. and they're hoping that the new facility will attract applicants. loves barbecue joint is rising from the ashes. opening a new location after a devastating fire horn bbq. popular place is officially coming back. the new location will take part of mount horns. other restaurant maddie's located on a street in oakland horn bbq has been widely acclaimed in the bay area and beyond having been recognized by michelin and with torn himself, earning best new chef honors from food and wine and 2021. the

>> 2 weeks after the arizona supreme court ruled in favor of 160 year-old near total abortion ban. governor gavin newsom announced new legislation let legislation rather allowing arizona doctors to perform abortions here in california. eytan wallace has the story. well, newsome calls the arizona abortion law extreme, but he says he's turning anger into action. he believes will make an impact for women in the grand canyon state today. seek an abortion in the golden

state. this is really sick. what's happening in this country right now. governor gavin newsom responding with frustration as he spoke about near total abortion bans in effect across more than a dozen u.s. states. and now arizona could be next. while the grand canyon state currently has a law on the books allowing abortions in the first 15 weeks of pregnancy, the state supreme court ruled earlier this month. arizona should follow law from 18, 64. >> banning nearly all abortions except when the pregnant person's life is in danger. doctors who are found violate the law could face a penalty of 2 to 5 years in state prison. this is serious. one thing all has in common men. >> determine the fate and future women. this would never happen. it was men. we know that. but newsom says california has a part to play. he and the members of the california legislative women's caucus announced in urgency. bill sb 2, 3, 3 allowing arizona doctors in good standing to come to california to provide abortion care for their patients who've traveled

here. we want to lend our hand, not just our hearts and we want to we want to create a framework of real support. >> we have the opportunity to help women who woke up last week with fewer rights than their mothers have had for their lifetime. we proudly take on this fight. we will not abandon our sisters or their health care professionals in arizona or in any other state. but just hours after this press conference, 32 eyes. 28 knows the gop controlled arizona. lower state house voted to repeal the near abortion ban, but it still needs approval from the arizona state senate before can make it to democratic governor katie hobbs desk. >> for now, newsom says he's working with the nonprofit redwine in blue to help crowdfund abortion care costs. so as to not use taxpayer dollars for arizona to cross into our state. as for his new urgency legislation, get this bill to my desk as quickly as possible. and no official response from the entire assembly or senate republican

caucus. but in the statement, assembly member patterson wrote this on social media, quote, the governor and attorney general spend more time focused on other states and they do californians probably no small reason. we have huge increases in homelessness. >> and drug deaths and because newsom's proposal is an urgency bill, that means it would take effect immediately. but it needs at least two-thirds approval to reporting at the state capitol. wallace kron. 4 news. >> breaking news to tell you about. want to show you live pictures where you see la pd officers in riot gear on the campus of usc in los angeles where there have been some violent outbreaks between protesters there and officers. the protesters are demanding a in gaza and they have been clashing with police there. this is a scene that we've seen it campuses across the country. most of the campus protests have been peaceful, but at columbia university in new york, they actually had to

cover classes because just weren't able to get around the campus to get to their classes. we just told you about the protests taking place. it sproul plaza in berkeley and those protests have so far been peaceful. but it is a different story at usc it looks like it's fairly calm now. but just a few minutes ago, there were some tussles going on between officers and protesters. yeah, at least one person i know of that has been detained there from usc from earlier today. police did remove. >> several from the campus earlier today. and that is when the arguments and and kind a tussle started, they got into a back and forth tugging match with some protesters. but like you said, it does look like it's a bit. >> calmer from reports of our from our sister station. we've learned that a lot of these protesters are not students and or alumni even of the they've just come on the campus to the war in as you can see there, protesters making some noise, clapping,

banging on some drums. so it is definitely a loud and a large group there. and they have been loud and proud out all day long at usc's campus. we're going to keep an eye on this throughout the evening and will keep good giving you a updates as the night goes on. >> meanwhile, a search is underway in san francisco for the driver who hit up bob's donuts employee over the weekend. kron four's grant lotus here in the studio with more on jacqui. what happened? grant can the victim is a husband and father of 2. you see part of the family. >> here he's still in the hospital tonight. unresponsive. this whole thing started about 3 o'clock sunday morning near duboce avenue and guerrero street here. police say they found the man later identified as jesus. so on the ground unconscious. they say he was hit by a car while riding an electric scooter officers say he didn't have any id on him at the time, but was wearing a bob's donuts shirt. so they called the

shop. >> he >> you know, and that's called >> bobs, of course, the famous spot there on polk street. the manager says they knew something was wrong when he didn't show up for his 03:00am shift. then they got the call from the cops. since then, bob says created a gofundme and has flyers posted outside the shop. the manager says is the sole provider for his wife and 2 kids ages 3, 5. they all live in mexico. bob simply say they haven't been able to see him in the hospital. so the family, you know, that is they're they're stuck in mexico effectively. they're working to get a visa before his condition gets worse. they fear. meanwhile, san francisco

police are still looking for this person who hit the driver. if you have any information about the crash, you're asked to give them a call. we'll keep you posted, canada. well, back to you. >> grant, thank you. let's get you a check of your 4 zone forecast now taking a live look from our mount tam cam where we've still got a lot of cloud cover out there. getting chilly tonight. >> or is it looks like a it's a black and white day. there's no color. really last couple of days. we've seen just a lot of cloud cover out there. not much breaking up even in the afternoon. many places still seeing plenty of cloud cover right now. and that's getting ready to thicken up again overnight tonight and headed back our way for tomorrow morning. so out there right now, boy, really cool on the beach. you get out along the coast. you see that sea breeze kicking in. you get those winds 15 to 20 miles an hour. you get all that moisture in the atmosphere on your skin and it feels very chilly out there. so a lot of headed away from the coastline in general temperatures today. kind of bottoming out around the bay area. some places just slightly cooler, some places a degree or 2 warmer. but overall looks like the pattern

just kind of holding steady for today. that means these temperatures again running down a from a couple days ago. remember, just a couple go or in the sun and enjoy temperatures up in the 80's. now we're well below the average 62 degrees now for a high in san francisco. 64 in oakland, 69 in san jose. 65 degrees. in livermore. 66 in concord and 65 for high in santa rosa. so the cloud cover already settling in. it's only going to thicken again tonight. i think it lower a little bit. that will be the one thing. high pressure building over head, the likely compress that marine layer somewhat. so so that real high debt that allows the flow all the way the interior valleys going to be squashed a bit overnight tonight. so i think an early or burn off tomorrow. so we may see a little warming in some of the interior valleys. thunderstorms popping up over the sierra nevada day 2 and actually a couple snowflakes over the high country. and you know what? we've got another storm system dropping in late season. we're going to be talking about some more snow in the high country. maybe a couple more raindrops here in the bay area. we'll talk more about that coming up in just a few minutes. >> lawrence, thank you. coming

glucerna. bring on the day. >> kron 4 is your local election headquarters. rent control activists in san pablo submitted more than 1000 signatures to the city clerk all in an effort to get a legislation package that would protect renters on the november ballot. the proposed package would focus on rent stabilization tenant, anti-harassment and just cause evictions renters would also be able to file petitions with the city manager. if the landlord fails to make repairs, landlords can also

file petitions with the city. if they feel they're not getting a reasonable return on their investment. the contra costa county registrar of voters has 30 days now to approve the more than 1600 signatures. meantime, more than 100,000 california college students could be up for some financial relief by fall. lawmakers are hoping to expand free tuition and cash aid program. so students who aren't eligible for the cal grant can still get money for community college. the expansion would work cost more than 200 million dollars depends on the state budget that has to be finalized by late june as we've been reporting, california is facing a multibillion dollar deficit and experts say the state will battle 30 billion dollar deficits through 2028 that could delay the program expansion if it were to pass. however, low-income students and those who do not meet the 2.0 gpa requirement will still be able to apply. coming up, some county sheriff's deputies have identified the skull of a
